Development today takes place in complex contexts with infinitely conflicting issues and interests. Interventions by consequence become less standardized and evaluable, with influences more dense and problems more systemic. The SDG imperative to ‘leave no one behind’ further challenges traditional evaluation practice. Do you want to learn about how to evaluate systems change at a relatively large scale (N)? Do you want to find out about how to rigorously analyse causality in contexts where baselines and control groups don’t work? Do you want your evaluation to facilitate solid debate with stakeholders about sustainable and inclusive impact? Do you want your evaluation to walk the talk of ‘leaving no one behind’ and learn how to enable participation without compromising rigour? PIALA (or “Participatory Impact Assessment and Learning Approach”) is a theory-based and mixed- methods approach that seeks to address these challenges by offering a set of key design principles, standards, elements and options. The 4-day training is framed around making thoughtful design decisions (e.g. related to scale, scope, engagement, counterfactual, methods) to maximize the value or utility of an impact evaluation. Participants will be introduced to the five PIALA elements and learn how they can be adapted to different contexts and needs: (a) systemic Theory of Change; (b) multi-stage cluster sampling of/in ‘systems’; (c) participatory mixed-methods; (d) participatory sensemaking; and (e) configurational analysis. Who is it for? Commissioners who have to manage evaluation funds and assess the value-for-money of proposals crossing their desks; Managers who have to dream up the terms of reference and steer and use impact evaluations for developing or adapting their programmes and policies; Professionals whose job is to design and conduct impact evaluations in complex contexts, and wish to do this in a participatory and rigorous way. ...everyone matters 28-31 August 2017 Stone Lodge | Asutsuare, Ghana Ghana

SPECIAL 4-DAY TRAINING COURSE ON: Designing rigorous and inclusive impact evaluations with PIALA (Participatory Impact Assessment & Learning Approach) What is this course about? Development today takes place in complex contexts with infinitely conflicting issues and interests. Interventions by consequence become less standardized and evaluable, with influences more dense and problems more systemic. The SDG imperative to ‘leave no one behind’ further challenges traditional evaluation practice.

• Do you want to learn about how to evaluate systems change at a relatively large scale (N)?

• Do you want to find out about how to rigorously analyse causality in contexts where baselines and control groups don’t work?

• Do you want your evaluation to facilitate solid debate with stakeholders about sustainable and inclusive impact?

• Do you want your evaluation to walk the talk of ‘leaving no one behind’ and learn how to enable participation without compromising rigour?

PIALA (or “Participatory Impact Assessment and Learning Approach”) is a theory-based and mixed-

methods approach that seeks to address these challenges by offering a set of key design principles, standards, elements and options.

The 4-day training is framed around making thoughtful design decisions (e.g. related to scale, scope, engagement, counterfactual, methods…) to maximize the value or utility of an impact evaluation.

• Commissioners who have to manage evaluation funds and

assess the value-for-money of proposals crossing their desks; • Managers who have to dream up the terms of reference and

steer and use impact evaluations for developing or adapting their programmes and policies;

• Professionals whose job is to design and conduct impact evaluations in complex contexts, and wish to do this in a participatory and rigorous way.
