From The Editors Desk...

Hello all Good & bad this month Good to see Sparkford Inn Open and staring to thrive

again, Bad news that the company working on the Old Coal & have fallen into

Administration bringing the Development into question. Brilliant work being done in the

Sparkford Cricket Ground Could I please send out a plea for all you dog owners to pick up

after yourselves as there have been reports of dog fouling again throughout the village.

There are dog bins provided for you to use. If you cannot find one please take it home with

you as it’s not very nice to deposit it into someone’s hedge or drop into their garden nor is it

desirable to leave it and the public footpaths for children & adults alike to step in it.

Please send all items to me at: [email protected] or to my home address

shown on back of magazine.

PLEASE REMEMBER THE DEADLINE FOR INCLUSION IS 15th OF EACH MONTH

Sutton Montis Village Hall

Sutton Montis V.E. Night Celebration.

Some of the residents of Sutton Montis who remembered V.E. Day and looked forward to their fathers coming home from the war and many who were too young to remember, decided to make a night of it on May 8th in the Village Hall, which was decorated with a parachute and bunting for the occasion.

The appropriate dress was worn by all participants, forties style, to include the Spiv with the nylons and watches, the city gent, the Fighter Pilot Ace and the Tommy, who with the Naval Representative made a full house for the Armed Services. The Ladies enjoyed wearing the flattering forties styles and although there were no bare legs, the Land Girls were probably the most comfortable. But the star of the evening, Mrs Percy, wore her mother’s Utility Coat in bottle green which had the original utility label attached, a jaunty hat and fur tippet, with dangling legs set off the whole ensemble. With a wind up gramophone and to the accompaniment of Glenn Miller and the community singing of old favorites , the evening was enjoyed by all even if the Quiz (won by Mr Bucks), baffled some, And the blindfold game of touching Hitler’s Moustache caused much hilarity. But as always the food was the star of the show; guests enjoyed Woolton Pie, Rabbit Pie, Boiled Beef and Carrots followed by Rhubarb Crumble ad Jelly with custard.

We hope that the winner of the Star Raffle Prize of the Tin of Spam enjoyed it. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Hall Rebuild and we hope that at the Eightieth Anniversary there will be room to dance the Hokey Cokey.

SPARKFORD PARISH COUNCIL Report

Following on from last month’s report and indeed a similar report this time last year, there is also a

problem with dog littering at the Cricket Club Ground. Now that the Cricket season has started and

there is a large group of young people visiting the site for cricket coaching on Tuesday evenings it is

more important than ever that dog litter is removed. Not only would it be unpleasant to pick up a

cricket ball that had rolled through dog waste but it poses a health risk in the form of toxocariasis (a

rare infection caused by roundworm parasites, which is spread from animals to humans via their

infected faeces).

Last year’s report concluded by saying “If you see anyone not picking up their dog litter could you

either approach them and ask them to do so; or, if you are not happy doing this but are willing to give

a name or description of the person and dog please report to the Dog Warden she can then issue a

fixed penalty fine. The name of the Dog Warden is Lynette Osment and she can be contacted on

01935 462873. Unfortunately if this continues to happen then there will be a ban on dogs using the

cricket ground.”

Some interest has been expressed in filling the 2 vacancies on the Parish Council and thank you to

those people. This is a further opportunity for others to consider putting yourself forward for

consideration. The Parish Council meets monthly, and while we are ‘quorate’ (there are enough

Councilors to vote on things) it would only take a couple of people to miss a meeting for it to be

impossible to make any decisions) Please do contact me or one of the Parish Councilors if you have

any questions about what is involved – we will help as much as we can. Co-option (the way spaces on

the council are filled outside an election) is likely to take place at our June meeting. I apologize if this

reaches you too late.

One resident in the village wished for the 3rd Sparkford Scout Group to be thanked for all the bulb

planting they did which made the area look so attractive. So, Thank You Scouts!

The Next Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday 1st June 2015 8.00pm at the Parish/Village Hall.

3rd Sparkford Scout Group

Latest from 3rd Sparkford Beavers, Cubs and Scouts

The 3rd Sparkford Scout Group has been on its first camp of the season – this time it was ‘Parent Camp’ so mums and dads had the opportunity to camp too. It was held at Tedbury camp near Frome, a fantastic woodland location which everyone really enjoyed. The youngsters showed their parents how to put up their patrol tents and dining shelters, cooked them breakfast, and created handmade burgers (with meat very kindly donated by Andrew Barclay butchers)! They enjoyed a great hike along the river, and worked hard on their camp craft skills. The rain even held off (most of the time!). The new patrol tent we fundraised for last year was a huge success – now we are putting our energy into raising funds for another as our cubs were crammed in their tent like little sardines! If you or someone you know can get involved please contact Helen Wooldridge on [email protected] or 01963 440801

here they are again Your Contacts are:

We have received letters from all the charities thanking everyone for their support.

They were Yeovil District Hospital Scanner Appeal, Air Ambulance, Playing field, St

Margaret’s Hospice & Help for Heroes. Unfortunately the garden bench given by

Wessex Water and sited in the Millennium Copse has been stolen. It had no

distinguishing marks or anchor, this highlights the benefit of marking those possessions

which are vulnerable with name & postcode, which can be done with a special pen or

permanent marker, Goods are liable to disappear if left lying around especially in the

summer months.

The Village defibrillators are sited at the Sparkford filling station & in the old phone box in

Weston Bampfylde should anyone wish to do a CPR Course Chris Cox does courses in

Langport so give him a ring on 01458 273085. There has been a 3% rise in crime in our

area as opposed to others where there has been a decrease. Lock it up or lose it!

Queen Camel Tuesday Group April & May 2015

April's talk was an archaeologist, talking about Roman Villas! Dry and boring you may think? Not a bit of it. John G. Smith grabbed us in the first minute by telling us that a villa had been found in Queen Camel and excavated a few seasons back. He then enthused for 40 minutes or so, propelling us back to the second century AD, with descriptions of the life of ordinary people at that time and bringing the talk alive with pictures, artefacts and clothing from the period. Are you of an age to remember 'matador pants,' 'beehive hair-do's' stiff with lacquer, frilly petticoats that you dipped in sugar solution and then ironed to make them stand out? {The latter was OK until it rained!] If these all ring a bell, then you would have loved our meeting in May. Graham Gould, himself a look-alike for the middle aged Elvis Presley, kept us swaying and bobbing on our seats as he quizzed us on the music of the 50's and 60's. (It was the music, honestly!) The business of the morning was quickly dealt with before Graham was introduced. His pleasant singing voice created a backdrop to the early part of the meeting before he took over the floor completely with an impressive array of recording equipment, quiz sheets and questions. The photos of long forgotten pop stars stirred the 'little grey cells' and we all left, feeling younger and, somehow happier for the memories. The variety of our meetings and the companionship one gets on a monthly basis (not to mention the lovely cakes,) for a very modest subscription, makes belonging to the Tuesday Group a great pleasure. Next month we have an outing to the 'Bristol Blue' Glass Factory and Cribbs Causeway if you are interested. The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

VILLAGE AGENT Sparkford Tea Room Unfortunately very few people have come along for the monthly tea room which has been organized by the Hall committee and myself on the last Tuesday afternoon of each month for the past year. Consequently, regretfully we will not be running any more for the present. We would like to thank the Evergreen Club for their support over the past year and I would like to thank the Hall committee members who have provided delicious cakes and scones and set up and cleared up each month very cheerfully.

Bishop’s Message – JUNE 2015 Thinking differently about poverty

As I look forward with great anticipation to my first trip to Zambia as Bishop of Bath and Wells, I am aware that I am doing so with a touch more insight than I had when this visit was first put in my diary. A week ‘Living Below the Line’ for Bath-based charity ‘Send a Cow’ and ‘Sharing the load’ for Christian Aid Week can never replicate the challenges faced by those living in poverty in Zambia or other parts of the developing world but it can bring understanding.

It was certainly more than a publicity stunt or ‘playing at being poor’ which were just some of the criticisms levied at those taking part. Of course, I was not struggling around Wells with my bundle of firewood worried about being attacked by hyenas – just injuring innocent shoppers – and I knew my five days of hunger living on £1 a day would come to an end, but they were still a challenge.

They made me think differently about what living in extreme poverty really means and to question the choices we make every day. I hope I managed to share that message to others and encouraged everyone to play their part in addressing this global issue.

As we continue to strengthen ties of companionship and celebrate the richness and diversity of our global faith with the vital Christian community in Zambia this summer, I will be doing so in the knowledge that it is a country in which the vast majority live in increasing poverty. It is also, however, a country that is rich in terms of its people and we have much to learn from each other. The Zambian people choose to face the country’s challenges with vitality, patience and tolerance and with only a limited number of priests the lay population chooses to take on a major role in the church that is much valued.

In our modern, busy lives we are faced with a myriad of choices every day and it is not easy to take the time to look beyond our personal, parish or national boundaries. Being challenged to do so through my recent experiences was a sobering and humbling experience, and the benefits ripple close to home as well as in Africa.

Dear Reader,

The churches in Cam Vale Benefice have been celebrating Rogation with outdoor services in local farms in recent weeks. It is a time of asking for God’s blessing on the growing crops, on farmers and those who produce our food and on the machinery they use. After all, we humans can plant seeds and water them, but only the creative energy underpinning creation can bring them to life; God the Creator.

On 24th May, the churches will celebrate Pentecost. This marks the moment when the Spirit of the Risen Jesus came down on the first disciples and empowered them to live the life, to preach the message and to perform miracles just as Jesus had done during his time on earth. We read in The Acts of the Apostles of Peter healing the lame man and preaching to many in the courtyard of the Temple in Jerusalem; quite a change for the fisherman from Galilee who had denied that he was a follower of Jesus just weeks before at the crucifixion.

While people of faith are giving thanks for the Holy Spirit which empowers human life and for God’s creative force to turn seeds into life sustaining food, the political life of our nation has been transformed by a General Election. I don’t suppose I am alone in regretting that some very important issues affecting our nation were barely mentioned by any of the political parties or the media during the election campaign.

All the parties budgeted for endless growth, an impossibility on a planet with finite resources. Few addressed the implications for sustainability, climate change and global warming. Most parties were offering further austerity and cuts to government services on which the frailest and poorest in our society depend.

So it is down to you and I and to our friends and neighbors to take the initiative and to care for creation and for those people in need of help to sustain life. Rogationtide reminds us that God’s creation provides a bountiful sufficiency but cannot sustain endless growth from finite mineral and energy resources. And Pentecost reminds us that when the followers of Jesus take up the challenge of continuing his life’s work of caring for the ”widow and orphan” or “setting free” those imprisoned by circumstances then the Holy Spirit will empower them in unimaginable ways

May the Spirit of the Creator God and the Risen Jesus be a blessing to you and those you love and care for this Rogation and Pentecost season.
