welcomeThe Cervantes Institute offers you a new cultural program for this summer, full of various ambitious proposals from Spain and Latin America.

Alongside the exhibits by Berena Álvarez and Enrique Ochoa, there are quite a few specially featured events such as the encounter that will take place between Mario Vargas Llosa with Paul Holdengräber at the New York Public Library, the tribute to José Hierro within the European Literature Night framework, or the symposium on Children and Youth Literature with Antonio García Teijeiro. Specifically of interest will be the conversation between Juan Luis Cebrián and Professor Julio Ortega on “Fake News: the manipulation of public opinion”, or the conference featuring the prominent NY based cardiologist, Valentín Fuster.

Additionally, there will be an essential presentation by Gloria Steinem and Rebecca Carroll about “Women in Media: Challenges for the generations.” Within the vast programming dedicated to film the traditional “The Americas Film Festival New York (TAFFNY)” stands out.

El Instituto Cervantes les ofrece un nuevo programa cultural para este verano, cargado de variadas y ambiciosas propuestas de España y Latinoamérica.

Junto a las exposiciones de Berena Álvarez y Enrique Ochoa, destacan muy especialmente el encuentro que mantendrá Mario Vargas Llosa en la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York con Paul Holdengräber, el homenaje a José Hierro en el marco de la Noche de la Literatura Europea, o el simposio sobre Literatura Infantil y Juvenil, con Antonio García Teijeiro. Parting from the idea that each individual is a result of social construction, the exhibit showcases 30 photographs which invite us to question who we really are and who we’ve been told we are. The exhibition invites us to explore the concept of “identity” through the images displayed. The artist Berena Álvarez, thus attempts to reflect the desire to obtain a new reality that is alien to all norms or socially imposed categories, through the emancipated character proportioned by art.

Partiendo de la idea de que todo sujeto es el resultado de una construcción social, la muestra que reúne 30 fotografías, nos invita a cuestionarnos sobre quiénes somos realmente y quiénes nos han dicho qué somos.La exposición explora el concepto “identidad” a través de un juego caleidoscópico de imágenes. En ellas, la artista Berena Álvarez, intenta reflejar el deseo de alcanzar una nueva realidad ajena a toda norma o categoría social impuesta, a través del carácter emancipador que proporciona el arte.

Enrique Ochoa (1891-1978) was a humanist and multifaceted artist. Despite his solid classical artistic training, he became one of the 20th century painters to stand out for his innovative “musical plasticity” within the gestural art and abstraction movements. His work is without a doubt a statement of modernity and the avant-garde reflexive of his constant innovation and restlessness. The Painted Word illustrates Ochoa’s musical plasticity inspired by García Lorca’s Romancero Gitano reflecting the synergies he kept with the poet and the painter’s extraordinary eclecticism.

Enrique Ochoa (1891-1978) fue un artista polifacético y humanista. A pesar de haber recibido una sólida formación académica clásica, fue sin embargo uno de los pintores de las vanguardias del siglo xx que supo ser un precursor e innovador de las tendencias del gestualismo y la Abstracción a través de su “plástica musical”. Sin duda la obra de Ochoa es todo un alegato a la modernidad y a la vanguardia por su inquietud y constante innovación. La Palabra Pintada articula la plástica musical de Ochoa inspirada en el Romancero Gitano de Federico García Lorca, reflejando las sinergias que mantuvo con el poeta y el extraordinario eclecticismo del pintor.

Experience the European café culture while viewing readings, musical compositions, films, and art exhibit inspired by European contemporary books: a celebration of 15 European novels. At the European Literature Night our visitors will not only be part of the audience, but they will also have the opportunity to participate in conversations with writers, translators and artist from a dozen european countries and that will take place in different parts of the building. Instituto Cervantes will present New York Notebook by the poet José Hierro, for the 20th anniversary of its publication.

Instituto Cervantes celebrates 20 years since the publication of New York Notebook by José Hierro, reciting his poems with the voice of Francisco Fuertes accompanied by the trio formed by I-Yun Tsai, Wenguan Li and Zhihong Li. Through the dialogue with the city, the poet confronts an intense and emotional meditation about the enigmas that have since the beginning of time worried men: life, love, the passing of time, death, art. The poet doesn’t hold a dialogue with the city of anonymous multitudes, or the chaotic megalopolis, cold and inhumane. Instead, his reflection is born out of discovering the singular spaces of the city, flowing with his moods, and being in touch with his interior needs stemming from his own cultural and sentimental history. José Hierro was one of Spain’s most recognized contemporary literary figures whose concise verse drew critical and public attention.

El Instituto Cervantes celebra los 20 años de la publicación de Cuadernos en Nueva York de José Hierro, recitando sus poemas con la voz de Francisco Fuertes acompañado del trío musical compuesto por I-Yun Tsai, Wenguan Li y Zhihong Li. A través del diálogo con la ciudad, el poeta afronta una intensa y emotiva meditación sobre los enigmas que desde el principio de los tiempos han rondado al ser humano: la vida, el amor, el paso del tiempo, la muerte, el arte... El escritor no mantiene una conversación con una ciudad de multitudes anónimas o con la caótica megalópolis, fría e inhumana. Su conversación surge del descubrimiento de espacios urbanos singulares, de seres silenciados a los que da voz, fluctuando con sus estados de ánimo y escuchando las necesidades interiores.José Hierro fue uno de los escritores españoles contemporáneos más reconocidos cuyo verso conciso atrajo la atención de los críticos y del público.

Legend has it that Mario Vargas Llosa was notified of winning the Nobel Prize while working in the Rose Main Reading Room of the New York Public Library. Vargas Llosa has worked on at least two of his novels here—The Storyteller and The Dream of the Celt—and while teaching at Princeton he spent afternoons off here reading. This year, in celebration of his new novel, The Neighborhood, the titan of contemporary Western literature travels from the stacks to the stage to discuss his life in letters.

La leyenda cuenta que a Mario Vargas Llosa se le notificó que había ganado el Premio Nobel mientras trabajaba en el Rose Main Reading Room de la New York Public Library. Vargas Llosa ha escrito en dicha biblioteca, al menos, dos de sus novelas - El Hablador y El Sueño del Celta - y mientras enseñaba en Princeton pasaba las tardes libres aquí leyendo. Valenzuela is a prominent and prolific Chilean writer who has been featured in film, literature, television, and theater. His work includes almost twenty books published in Latin America, including some bestsellers. He was selected by About.com as one of the 10 best Latin American writers under 40. The outstanding Chilean writer, better known as “Chascas” will present his latest work, Hashtag, to the audience. This intriguing story tries to defy the reality of a society which is submerged in the world of social media.

Valenzuela es un prolífico y reconocido escritor chileno cuya presencia se ha extendido al cine, la literatura, la televisión y el teatro. Su trabajo comprende casi veinte libros publicados en Latinoamérica, incluyendo algunos grandes éxitos de venta. In times of post-truth, the flagrant use of lies, and the construction of alternative facts make it seem as if what is said has lost importance. Not only does language loose meaning, its function alters radically: it no longer serves to communicate facts and opinions, rather its sole purpose is to transmit power. The post-truth is especially present in the realm of politics and in the media’s misinformation. Any idea can become real by repetition, decontextualization, segmentation or replication in social media and networks of communication, constructing a post-truth which doesn’t align with the real or the rational. Recent events make evident the determining role that language and the media play in the construction and manipulation of public opinion. Juan Luis Cebrián, Honorary President & co-founder of Spain’s leading newspaper, El País, will be in conversation with Hispanic Studies professor Julio Ortega from Brown University to discuss these themes.

En tiempos de la posverdad, del uso flagrante de la mentira y de la construcción de «hechos alternativos», parece que lo que se dice haya perdido en sí mismo importancia. No solo el lenguaje se vacía de sentido, sino que su función cambia radicalmente: ya no sirve para comunicar hechos u opiniones, sino para transmitir el poder en sí mismo. La posverdad es especialmente reincidente en el mundo de la política y de la (des)información periodística. La expresión de cualquier idea se convierte en real, por repetición, descontextualización, segmentación, o replicación en los medios de comunicación y redes, construyendo la posverdad, que no coincide con lo real ni con lo racional. Los recientes acontecimientos ponen de manifiesto el papel determinante que el lenguaje y los medios de comunicación juegan en la construcción y manipulación de la opinión pública. Juan Luis Cebrián, Presidente honorífico y co-fundador de El País y Julio Ortega hispanista de Brown University, conversan sobre este tema.

Gloria Steinem , feminist activist, author, organizer and Rebecca Carroll, Editor of Special Projects at WNYC New York Public Radio will discuss the lack of women occupying positions in leadership, production and creation in several fields of media outlets. Steinem was already one of the most prominent voices within the equality movement and was the founder of “Ms”, the first feminist magazine, and the National Women’s Political Caucus, whose mission was to promote and increase the number of women in politics. She has been the inspiration and catalyst of important changes for women and has transmitted her liberating thoughts in a wade range of books and essays, Marilyn, Revolution from Within, My life on the Road, or Woman. Rebecca Carroll is a frequent collaborator with the Los Angeles Times, Shondaland.com, The Guardian, and has written several books including the renowned Sugar in the Raw and Saving the Race.

The tenth edition of the essential festival of new and vital European cinema, co-presented by Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) and the members of EUNIC NY (European Union National Institutes for Culture), includes fiction and documentary works that present a portrait of contemporary Europe during a period of tremendous flux. Highlighting recent films from throughout the continent, several of the films explore dialogues between the historic upheavals of the twentieth century and the current moment. Screenings will take place at both MoMI and the Bohemian National Hall.

La décima edición del festival Panorama Europe, que recoge lo último en cine europeo co-presentado por el Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) y los miembros de EUNIC NY (Unión Europea de Institutos de Cultura), incluye piezas documentales y de ficción que exponen un retrato de la Europa actual, en un período de cambio constante. The Lessons is a series of short films in black and white and produced with scarce resources. Each short was produced with only one rehearsal, filmed in four hours in only one space. The work represents a fictional movie scene that Ferreras would like to watch and no one has filmed yet. However, despite the economy of time and resources, “Lessons” has been recognized by the public at the Sedona Festival, Outfest in Los Angeles, the New York Latino Film Festival, the Havana Film Festival and NY Short. Following the projection there will a round table discussion with the director and actors moderated by Juan José Herrera de la Muela.

The Lessons es una serie de cortometrajes en blanco y negro producidos con los mínimos recursos. Cada corto se realizó con sólo un ensayo, en un único espacio y en cuatro horas. El trabajo representa diferentes escenas de películas ficticias que Ferreras desearía ver y que no existen todavía. Winner of ten Goya Awards and of the Special Jury Price at the San Sebastián Film festival, Handia (Giant) is a touching drama about the tough life of mid-19th century traveling circus “freaks”, set in the north of Spain. When young Martin returns home from the war, crippled and defeated, he cannot believe his eyes. His dear brother Joaquin has grown up to become an actual giant, as useless as he is for the family’s work in their tiny hamlet. To keep the family afloat, the two embark on a breathtaking adventure, turning the giant into a circus act, performing in squares, theaters and leading courts throughout Europe.

Films on the Green, is a free outdoor French film festival produced annually in New York City parks by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, FACE Foundation and NYC Parks. This 11th edition focuses on gastronomy. In 2018, for the second year in a row, a special screening will be presented in French with Spanish subtitles at J. Hood Wright Park in Washington Heights, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie by Luis Buñuel, presented in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York and the Instituto Cervantes.

Films of the Green es un festival de cine al aire libre presentado anualmente en los parques de la ciudad de Nueva York por el departamento de Cultura de la Embajada de Francia, la Fundación FACE y NYC Parks y que, en esta ocasión, cuenta además con la colaboración del Instituto Cervantes y del Instituto Cultural Mexicano. Esta edición está dedicada al tema de la gastronomía en la historia del cine. En 2018, por segunda vez consecutiva, cuenta con una proyección especial con subtítulos en castellano de El discreto encanto de la burguesía de Luis Buñuel, que se presentará en el parque J. Hood Wright en Washington Heights.

He never ran from himself. Luis Buñuel exercised the fascinating talent of being Luis Buñuel throughout his life. It wasn’t an easy task. He lived in the golden age of surrealism in 1920s Paris; he enjoyed a friendship with Federico García Lorca and Salvador Dalí, he shook up the bourgeoisie, the Catholics and fascists, and drank the bitter waters of exile and defeat. His cinema, surreal, original and symbolic, addressed several genres such as farce, satire, black comedies, dramas with neorealist touches or passionate melodramas. An essential figure of the seventh art.

Nunca se apeó de sí mismo. Luis Buñuel ejerció a lo largo de toda su vida el fascinante don de ser Luis Buñuel. No fue una tarea fácil. Vivió las mieles del surrealismo en el efervescente París de los años veinte, gozó de la amistad de Federico García Lorca y Salvador Dalí, soliviantó a burgueses, católicos y fascistas, y bebió las aguas amargas del exilio y la derrota. Su cine, surreal, original, simbólico, abordó diversos géneros y subgéneros, como farsas, sátiras, comedias negras, dramas de corte neorrealista o pasionales melodramas. Una figura imprescindible del séptimo Arte.

In our Summer Camp, children learn to understand and express themselves in Spanish, while improving their communication skills through a dynamic immersion program taught by native instructors that combines classes, artistic workshops and fun activities.

n aGes 8-12 Here interactive activities are used to emphasize spoken fluency and improve students’ pronunciation. They read and write stories, poems and reviews to learn a variety of text types and styles of writing. We help to develop students’ interactive communication skills through pair, group and whole class activities in Spanish.
