By MARY JANE KIRBY Crowning an all-around excellent
performance by the San Jose State college Symphony orchestra, Miss Frances Robinson, violin soloist and faculty member, brought music enthusiasts to their feet, in her Interpretation of Brahma’ Violin Concerto.
"Scherzo", by Mr. Neil Daniels, Santa Rosa junior college teacher, was acclaimed by the audience as the second outstanding number on the program. Mr. Daniels, who is becoming an increasingly popular composer, received the acclaims of the listeners.
"Rhumba", by McWilliams, the concluding selection, an ultra-modern composition, received ex-tremely good reception, as some-thing different from the usual run of symphony presentations.
Wagner’s numbers from "Die Walkure" and "Symphony in A Major", by Mendelssohn, were ex-ceedingly well-done by an orchestra which played, according to musical authorities, to the largest house on reeord.

Another quarter closes and with
it comes the appointment of an-
other Spartan Daily editor. Pos-
sibly this incident is just another
happening to members of the stu-
dent body, but to the journalism
student it marks a milestone in
a chosen career
As this quarter closes, it is a
pleasure to turn the editor’s posi-
tion over to one who has been a
valuable assistant during the past
thirteen weeks. Always on the
spot to help out, he has been the
kind of fellow to have around. He
has had the experience, and the
student body can look for an out-
standing paper next quarter.
Tune rushes on, bringing to a
close a quarter full of memories
that will be pleasant to recall in
the future. It’s hard to give up
what you’ve once had, especially
when the associations have been
pleasant. As a result it is hard to
say goodbye to a swell staff when
at work and a good bunch of pals
when at play.

A special dinner will he served, Talia said. All menibers are urged to be present for the final meeting of the quarter.
Phelan Estate Establishes Two Fellowships
Two fellowships, each carrying a stipend of $900 for 1940-41 are now being offered to San Jose State college students by the late Senator James D. Phelan’s estate. This was the announcement made today by trustees of the estate.
According to the trustees, the fellowships "are made available annually under the terms of a bequest to bring about a further development of native talent in California in the fields of litera-ture and art".
Both men and women may apply for the fellowships, but must be native born citizens of the state. Age limitation is between 20 and 35 years. Application forms may be obtained from the James D. Phelan Award, 658 Phelan build-ing, San Francisco.
This year, painting will be cov-ered in the competition. Litera-ture consideration 18 limited to fiction, biography, historical nar-rative, and verse. Short story writers will not be eligible.
The competition closes February 15, 1940.
New Philosophy Course Announced
Philosophy 7A, originally sched-uled for the fall quarter, will be given during the coming term, ac-cording to Philosophy Professor Elmo A. Robinson.
The three-unit freshman course Ii a history and general survey
of various fields of philosophy.
Also to be given is a three-unit upper division course in logic for which there Is no prerequisite.
In the three-unit history of phil-osophy course for sophomores and upper division students, a student may enter the winter quarter without having attended the pre-vious term, according to Dean of Men Paul Pitman.
1DR. MASON LEADS DISCUSSION AT AS1LOMAR
Dr. Bertha Mason of the San Jose State college faculty will lead the discussion part of the time in the Men and Women Re-lations group at the Asilomar Con-ference which will be held from December 26 to January 2 at Asil-omar on Monterey Bay. Other well-known persons who
will lead the various round table groups are Miss Leila Anderson, Dr. Fritz Kunkel, Dr. Carl Lan-dauer, and Dr. George Hedley.
While the mornings at the con-ference are devoted principally to round table discussions, the after-noons are taken up with field trips and other types of recreation, as well as special interest groups.
Thirty students have now signed up to attend, and others who are planning on going are urged to sign up this week.
PHI MU ALPHA INITIATES
Phi Mu Alpha, men’s national music honor fraternity, held its informal pledging activities Fri-day night at the home of Mr. Otterstein.
Pledges present were: James Adcock, Joe Bruggmen, Thayer Jones, Joe McAuliffe, Reuben Tut-tle, Leo Wadsworth, and Melvin Weyand.
OPERETTA PRESENTED "Sandy Claws", a children’s op-
eretta, will be presented by the Kindergarten-Primary music class Friday morning at 8 o’clock in the Little Theater, announces Mrs. Sy-bil Hanchett, instructor.
Many Spartans Get Local Christmas Jobs
Forty-four percent of the extra help employed during the Christ-mas season by San Jose merchants will be San Jose State college students, it was revealed yesterday following a survey of local busi-ness establishments.
College students are usually sat-isfactory in the work given to them, employers declared, but more cannot be used because the college closes for the Christmas vacation at such a late date it does not give the students enough days to work

SEE DEAN PITMAN FOR N.Y.A. JOBS DURING HOLIDAYS
"Any student who has applied for N.Y.A. for the winter quarter and who wishes to work during the Christmas holidays should see me," Dean of Men Paul Pitman announced yesterday.
There are a number of jobs that can be done during the holi-days, Pitman stated. Notably among them are gardening work, improvement of grounds, and typ-ing for the Spartan Daily.
The dean also emphasized that every N.Y.A. work card should be in complete, accurately signed and addressed properly, on Fri-day, except for those who plan to work over the week -end. Monday is absolutely the last day for these to be turned in to the dean’s of-fice.
More applications for N.Y.A. work for the winter quarter have been made already than were made in the fall quarter, Pitman said.

The Spartan fullback will climax his collegiate football career, which is perhaps the greatest in San Jose State grid history, by playing with the outstanding stars of the %Vest against the best from the East. It is the first time this honor ISIS been given a Spartan athlete and comes as a titling finish to three years of hard work and outstanding performances in the local grid picture.
The invitation to join the West team on December 20 in San Fran-cisco was received .by Zimmerman in a telegram yesterday. The wire was from Percy Locey, director of the Shrine Game, and needless to say, "Zimmy" lost little time in accepting the bid.
