Welcome To The 48th Annual

1Downtown Cocoa Beach, FL

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I welcome you to the 48th annual Space Coast Art Festival. This year we are excited to present 250 exceptional artists. There’s something for everyone here – from extraordinary painters to talented wood-workers and jewelers. We also continue to offer artistic opportunities for young budding artists at our Young-At-Art booth where children can participate in free hands-on arts and crafts projects and with our Saturday Margaret Heins Student Art Show showcasing the value of quality art education in our Brevard County schools.

Thank you to all Festival sponsors and community partners as well as the Brevard County Commission, the Brevard Cultural Alliance and the City of Cocoa Beach. We also owe a special thanks to the citizens and businesses of Cocoa Beach for allowing us to close off the streets and fill them with artists and participants. Lastly, thank you visitors, both lo-cal and from out-of-town, who appreciate and encourage the arts in our community. In a time of tightening budgets, it is so important that we keep the arts alive. Your support of the arts and the artists exhibiting in our festival is very appreciated.

Sincerely,

Diane Kirschenbaum2011 President

A Very Special Thank You...

The Board of Directors would like to thank the gracious Cocoa Beach residents that have hosted our Judges Receptions. This tradition continues to enhance our Art Festival as it has grown into one of the finest in the state of Florida. In the past, these supporters of the festival have opened their homes to our festival patrons, the win-ner of the poster competition and our judges. Thank you for helping our community support the arts and artists that give up their Thanksgiving weekend to enrich our lives.

A Florida native, Rick Piper is an artist that makes his home in Cocoa Beach. Showing a natural talent for drawing at a young age, Rick is largely self taught and followed a varied professional path that lead from design and engineering to computer modeling and anima-tion with a leading design visualiza-tion group at KSC. Fourteen years ago he decided to quit the 9-5 world and take on the risky life of painting original art. He is a painter, sculptor, muralist, computer artist and designer that makes his living from selling his original compositional fine art. His work informs many styles and is known for imaginative perspectives and vibrant, lush visions that embrace and reflect a retelling of the natural world through emotive memory. Water plays a big role in his exploration of environ-ment and subject matter. Known for a flowing narrative of a seemingly shared experience, Rick’s work explores our relationship to the visual world as we immerse ourselves in it. Not from a place of observation or overlook but from within the vision, following the path that leads us through it.

His art work is awarded and collected both regionally and nationally. His studio is located in downtown Cocoa Beach adjacent to the art show, 1/2 block north at 18 N. Brevard Ave. If you would like to see more of Rick’s art on-line, checkout his web site www.PiperArt.com or on Facebook under “Art by Rick Piper”

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1913, Margaret “Peggy” Heins came to the United States in 1935 where she met and married her husband, Teddy. Dur-ing her lifetime, she worked for the British Embassy, as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in New York City before retiring to Cocoa Beach in 1972. Peggy loved living in Brevard County and especially enjoyed gardening, dancing, and the arts. Prior to her death in January of 2001, she directed much of her estate to be used for the exclusive benefit of Brevard County residents. The Margaret Heins Foundation was created by the late Margaret Heins to support the work of tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations in Brevard County.

Board of Trustee members were close personal friends and advisors of Mrs. Heins and now over-see the distribution of funds in accordance with her wishes. The Space Coast Art Festival is ap-preciative of the funding from The Margaret Heins Foundation in support of this Student Art Show.

The Space Coast Art Festi-val (SCAF) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization gov-erned by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. In 1963, a small group of artists and local community lead-ers formed the first ‘Cocoa Beach Sidewalk Art Show’.

Sponsored by the City of Cocoa Beach and sup-ported by the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club, the Art Show thrived for several years.

Incorporated in 1972, Space Coast Art Festival, Inc. was born and presented its first juried show. Not-for-profit status was granted in 1996 and in 1998 a year-round headquarters was established and is currently located at 36 North Brevard Avenue in Downtown Cocoa Beach. In 2000, a gallery was added to provide a venue for support of local artists and out reach programs for children. Through a grant from a patron of the arts, the gal-lery is known as the Margaret Heins Gallery.

With over $50,000 in cash awards for exhibiting art-ists, SCAF draws outstanding talent from through-out the country. Always held over Thanksgiving weekend, SCAF’s long history of outstanding success is due to the continued support from Fes-tival partnerships, Festival sponsors, memberships and volunteers with special cooperation from our host, the City of Cocoa Beach.

Reach for the stars!

Inspiring healthy moments.

For quality health care, choose the plan with the most stars. For the second year in a row, Health First Health Plans has earned an overall quality rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), making our Medicare Advantage plans the best available to residents of Brevard County. In fact, only one other health plan in Florida scored 4.5 stars, so we are among the top two Medicare Advantage plans in the state.

What are we graded on?Medicare gathers information from surveys of members and providers, claims information, and medical records and then rates performance on more than 50 items in five major categories:1. Staying Healthy: Screenings, Tests, and Vaccines2. Managing Chronic (Long-Term) Conditions3. Plan Responsiveness and Care4. Member Complaints, Problems Getting Services,

and Choosing to Leave the Plan5. Customer Service

Information on quality can help you better compare Medicare plans. The 2012 5-Star Quality Ratings are released during Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15–December 7) to help beneficiaries compare each plan’s performance as they choose their coverage for the coming year. Choose a health plan with confidence in the quality of coverage, care and service you will receive.

What else should be considered?In-network access to Health First hospitals is only available through Health First Health Plans. This includes hospitalizations for surgery and medical procedures that are not considered an emergency.
