Communities collaborate to seed food deserts

20,600 miles round trip. $3500 air fare for two. Help us make it happen!

SOWETO, outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, is a massive food desert

2Arparthied forced people to move from their communities to soweto. Mix of classes from wealthy to most poor in country. The economic development of Soweto was severely curtailed by the apartheid state, which provided very limited infrastructure and prevented residents from creating their own businesses. Roads remained unpaved, and many residents had to share one tap between four houses, for example..

Residents of hostels (now mostly replaced by public housing on the left) farm in fallow fields between projects.

3About 85% of Kliptown comprises informal housing, for example [35]. The Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee argues that Soweto's poor are unable to pay for electricity. The committee believes that the South African government's privatization drives will worsen the situation. Research showed that 62% of residents in Orlando East and Pimville were unemployed or pensioners Since 1994, 368,000 new subsidised houses have been built in Gauteng out of total of 1,330,000 throughout the country In East Orlando,40% of households live on R1000 ($170) month or less.97% of expendable money spent outside of community2 new malls and recreational center at cooling towers being installed.

Many Sowetans are from rural areas and plow in the township

Fruits, vegies and corn meal can be bought on the street.
