A WORTHY group of volunteers has been honoured at the 2012 Australia Day Awards Breakfast. Hosted by Southside Sport & Community Club, the expanded awards fall into six segments with nominations from Councillors Krista Adams, Ian McKenzie and Steven Huang and State Members Phil Reeves, Judy Spence and Cameron Dick. Mr Dick, the Member for Greenslopes and Minister for Education and Industrial Relations, joins the awards for the first time. Cr Adams has been a long- running supporter of the awards, which were held for the first time in 2001 with current State Members Judy Spence and Phil Reeves presenting the awards. “The development of sport, children and the community is so important to the enrichment of our city,” Cr Adams said. “These volunteers give up hours of their spare time to enable local children to enjoy sports and expect nothing in return. “Each one of these sporting volunteer award recipients works quietly but with a very important job within the community of Brisbane.” Mr Reeves, Member for Mansfield said Australia Day was the perfect opportunity to recognise the efforts of some of the community's most deserving volunteers. “Australia Day encompasses many things, but at the core it's about celebrating how lucky we are to live in this country and the people that make us a great nation, especially those who give up their time each and every week to volunteer,” Mr Reeves said. "The simple act of helping out a mate and lending a hand is what this great country is about and is symbolic of the southside community spirit. “I hope everyone takes a moment to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in a country like Australia where anything is possible.” More than 200 people attended this year’s Australia Day awards ceremony with a total of 28 awards, up from last year’s 17 awards, distributed on the morning. Federal Member Graham Perrett (Moreton) addressed the gathering before the various local members presented their awards. Mt Gravatt Youth & Recreation Club and Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed were well represented in the awards with Men’s Shed founder Brian Wheeler receiving Mr Reeves’ Citizen of the Year award. Citizen of the Year is an award that is presented to a person whose contribution to a local community has been above and beyond the call of duty. It is someone who has seen an opportunity to contribute to our community and has accepted the challenge and excelled. Sporting Club of the Year and Community Group of the Year are two other highly sought after awards with Senior Citizen of the Year and Multicultural Citizen of the Year also prominent. From the General ManagerTHE headline for the main story on this page says it all – “A Victory for Common Sense”.While the Prime Minister will be pilloried by the main stream media for “breaking another promise”, she has to be commended for taking a common sense approach and now allowing the recommendations of the Productivity Commission to be implemented. The Government and the licensed clubs industry can now work together to develop and implement workable poker machine harm minimisation reform that will benefit the community as a whole. This is all the licensed community club industry has ever asked for because one problem gambler is one too many. The Government’s change of direction on mandatory pre-commitment would not have come about without the support of our loyal members and the community organisations that are supported by Southside Sport and Community Club. This was democracy at work with every Member of Parliament contacted by the licensed community clubs and their members to ensure those members had a clear understanding of the value of the clubs to the community and the effect mandatory pre-commitment would have on such a valuable community asset. Both the Member for Moreton, Graham Perrett, and the Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta, readily participated in discussions with the licensed community clubs in their electorates to obtain a

comprehensive understanding of the potential negative effect of the proposed poker machine reforms and they are to be commended for their efforts which allowed them to make informed decisions. It was interesting to hear Independent MP Andrew Wilkie’s comment when he announced that he was withdrawing his support for the Labor Government that the democratic process had been damaged. I would have thought that it was the other way around and that the democratic process was now being seen to be alive and well and working with the majority of the parliamentary members opposed to the Member for Denison’s demands on mandatory pre-commitment for poker machines. It is most certainly not a democratic process when an Independent Member with only 13,000 plus primary votes can hold a Government to ransom in an attempt to force ill-thought out legislation upon the community to satisfy a personal agenda no matter how well intentioned. With the potential decimation of the licensed community club industry as we know it averted, we can now move forward with some degree of certainty, along with the numerous local community and sporting organisations that are dependent upon the Southside Sport and Community Club organisation for ongoing support. Like most other licensed community clubs, Southside had deferred major expenditure on future developments until the outcome of Mr Wilkie’s demands had become clear. Now that we have some degree of certainly we can start planning for the Stage 5 redevelopment at the main club. Stage 4, completed in December 2009, was a new direction and the proposed redevelopment for Stage 5 will be even more exciting and will usher in a new era for the club – stay tuned.. See you at Southside,Graham Chattin

Clubs Australia is encouraged by the Federal Government’s commitment to a full and proper trial of mandatory pre-commitment on poker machines in the ACT’s 60 clubs.Clubs Australia executive director Anthony Ball said the Government’s commitment to a trial of mandatory pre-commitment was a positive step towards developing evidence-based policies that further reduce Australia’s already low rate of problem gambling.“Clubs Australia will work through the detail of the Prime Minister’s gambling policy,” he said.“Clubs are not seeking the status quo on gambling policy. However, this reform must be evidence based and should not destroy the club and hotel industry as we know it.“Clubs will communicate any update with the media as soon as substantial development occurs.“Clubs Australia will also be speaking with key stake holders, including state and territory governments who are the regulative bodies for gaming in Australia and who have worked with industry over the past decade to bring about a substantial reduction in the rate of problem gambling.”The Federal Member for Moreton, Mr Graham Perrett, had been vocal in his support of the licensed club industry and weighed into the latest decision.“I understand the important role that our local clubs play in communities right around the country and Brisbane’s southside is no different,” he said.“I have always been a supporter of clubs in my electorate and I work hard to listen to what our clubs have to say about pokies reform.“The Government’s plan will put in place reasonable evidence-based reform to tackle problem gambling while helping ensure that clubs continue to serve our community well.“We will undertake a large scale trial of mandatory pre-commitment

in the ACT and expand pre-commitment technology to every poker machine across the country, that could then be used for mandatory pre-commitment, if it is supported by a trial. “For most people, clubs are a great place to catch up with friends and to share a meal and a drink or to have a flutter on the pokies. For some people, however, problem gambling has a devastating impact on their lives and families.“By working together with our local clubs, the Government can help to reduce the impacts of problem gambling in our community.”Poker machines may be in the spotlight but academics warn online gambling could become a significant public health problem if action is not taken to protect vulnerable users. The largest study of online gambling habits in Australia, which surveyed more than 6500 people, found 50 per cent of participants had taken up gambling in the past six years, making it the fastest-growing form of gambling in the country. Lead researcher Sally Gainsbury said it was highly accessible and convenient and appealed to punters already involved in multiple forms of gambling.''Australia is one of the strongest international markets for online gambling, particularly online sports betting, on which an estimated $600 million is spent annually,'' Dr Gainsbury, a

gambling researcher at Southern Cross University, said. In the survey, close to 16 per cent of online gamblers were problem gamblers, who lost on average $825 a month. Half of problem gamblers had disrupted sleep and a third said their eating patterns had changed. The study, a self-selected online questionnaire, found that internet gamblers participated in five forms of gambling, on average, compared with three forms used by non-web-based gamers. It also revealed that many people used the internet in addition to traditional, land-based punting. It found online gamblers were more likely to be men who worked full-time or were students, were married or lived with a partner and had a higher income than non-internet gamblers. The majority of online gamers used the internet for race wagering and sports betting, followed by casino games and poker.Between 2004 and 2008, the number of online sports wagering accounts increased by 103 per cent.''Gambling is now seen as something you do while watching sport, as opposed to a separate and adult activity,'' said Dr Gainsbury. The main advantages of internet betting were convenience, 24-hour availability, greater privacy and anonymity.

A MATE’S fight against cancer has inspired a group of southside residents to leave their comfort zone for the ride of a lifetime. After learning their friend Warren Mah has cancer, four friends formed Team FatBoyz to ride in this year’s Rio Tinto Ride To Conquer Cancer, which benefits the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.“We’re here because we know that cancer is too big a disease to ignore,’’ the group said.“It affects everyone, maybe you, me, our parents, kids, siblings or friends. It is because of Warren and his desire to fight this disease and commit to this ride that we have come together.“By taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, we are supporting someone close to us and also helping the community as a whole.“We are not elite athletes and this ride will be a major challenge for many of us.“But with each other’s help we will conquer this journey as we hope Warren will conquer his cancer.”With 19 riders now in Team FatBoyz, they will take part in the ride over two days in August and will cover more than 200km cycling throughout Queensland’s scenic countryside.Team FatBoyz has raised more than $32,000 with its first fundraising event, a movie night, last month.

The next fundraising activity is a Car & Dog Wash on Saturday, February 25 from 10am to 4pm at St James Catholic Church, 165 Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo. The day will feature a free band, sausage sizzle and $20 for small and mid-size cars and $25 for large vehicles. The dog wash is $10.The team’s current target is $60,000 and will grow as the team grows. Social media is a key part of their strategy and they have established a team_fatboyz page on Facebook which already has 160 plus followers.“We feel very strongly about this cause and are all determined to make it a success. We hope you can join us on this journey,” they said.Anyone interested in getting involved can contact the group via team_fatboyz on facebookFor more information on the ride, visit the official website www.conquercancer.org.au.

AN idea generated at Wishart for an online family law service is making waves in Australian legal circles.Well-known solicitors Frank Carroll and Elizabeth Fairon, partners of local firm Carroll Fairon Solicitors, and Ben Hall founded the online service called Love Law in 2010. Love Law provides free online family law consultations that save time, money and can reduce the stress associated with separation, divorce, parenting and grand-parenting matters by automatically connecting people with a suitable Australian family lawyer.“Our service is one-of-a-kind and is rapidly growing nation-wide and is somewhat of a local success story that has developed into a very useful service for people all over Australia,” said Mr Hall, who grew up in the Logan area.“You can spend minutes, hours or weeks filling out the Love Law legal consultations and you can do it wherever, whenever and however you like.“The automatically generated legal reports will show you and or your lawyer what your legal situation is at a glance, saving you money.“Love Law is your first port of call if you have an Australian family law challenge. Love Law will clarify your legal situation for you and can put you in touch with an Australian legal professional.”Philip Armstrong, CEO of Australian Counselling

Association, said divorce rated as the second most stressful single event that a person can experience, with the death of a spouse rating number one. According to the Holmes and Rahe Life Stress Scale, marital separation rates as the third most stressful event, with the loss of a family member rating fourth.“Stress is accumulative, which means a person who is going through a divorce would already be experiencing extremely high levels of stress due to the initial separation,” Mr Armstrong said.“The subsequent divorce would add more than double the level of stress already experienced. These levels of stress, particularly when sustained over a period of months, impact on an individual’s physical and emotional health, which in turn can affect their ability to make rational decisions and use legal services efficiently.“What does this mean in relation to the cost (emotional and monetary) of a relationship break-up? Most people are generally anxious when they seek legal advice as they worry about such concerns as financial security, assets and access to or care of children, to name only a few. “The overall impact of all this stress is likely to mean that meetings with your lawyer may not be as productive as they could be if you were assisted in dealing with emotional issues.”

Mr Hall said it made sense that instead of spending hours in an initial consultation with a lawyer, a client could tell the same information to the Love Law online questionnaires for free and have Love Law show a concise and clear legal report to the client’s lawyer. “Imagine having a fully briefed lawyer contact you, rather than the stressful alternative of having to cold call uninformed lawyers and receptionists simply to obtain a quote,” Mr Hall said. The partners of Love Law, managed by Love Law Online Pty Ltd, a company owned by Australians and operated in Australia, are legal practitioners so clients can trust their skill, integrity and understanding of Australian family law.Frank Carroll was a member of State Parliament in the mid-1990s and has been a family lawyer in the local area for more than 35 years. He has been practising family law since 1976 and has always found satisfaction and meaning in guiding his clients through their challenges. In addition to his role as managing partner of Carroll Fairon Solicitors, Frank is honorary solicitor to a number of community groups and has a distinguished track record of giving up his time and providing his expertise for the benefit of those less fortunate. Elizabeth Fairon, who lives and works in the local area, has a special interest in family law, and in addition to managing her Brisbane-based general law practice, she volunteers her time to a women’s refuge and a domestic violence service.

HAVE you heard of Helping Hand? Do you know what they do? What is CSP? I was faced with the same questions a few months ago. The Community Supporting Police Inc. (CSP) Helping Hand is a registered charitable organisation which aims to render aid, assistance and benefits to members of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and their immediate families who are faced with serious, terminal, life-threatening injuries or significant personal trauma.

In 2004, the concept of the Helping Hand was developed in response to a genuine need for assistance and support for members of the service and their families when faced with serious or terminal illness or injury. The potential impact of these types of crises for families can be debilitating financially, emotionally and physically.CSP is a community driven organisation that operates with the support of the QPS. The organisation provides enormous support for members of the QPS firstly, by way of the physical support for police families in need, and secondly, by the interaction with and support given by the community itself through organisations like Rotary, Lions, Scouts, Guides, church groups, youth groups, ethnic groups, business people and the community generally. Branches of the CSP are now forming in regional centres of Queensland to reflect the truly decentralised makeup of the state.Helping Hand aims to co-ordinate fundraising initiatives across the state and provide a communication network for families and members who may find themselves affected by serious illness or personal trauma.

Unfortunately the creation of Helping Hand has come about as a result of increasing instances of this type of need being experienced by members of the service.Helping Hand has also set up a charitable fund to support these activities. In order to provide this important support service, Helping Hand raises funds through donations, sponsorships, payroll deductions and fundraising events. As a sub-committee of the Community Supporting Police Inc. (CSP), donations to the Helping Hand are tax deductible. Donations can be made either directly or through payroll deductions. In addition to financially based assistance, Helping Hand aims to provide a support base for members in need. This support may include professional services, equipment, transportation, child-care or even just a hand collecting the groceries.Your financial support of the Helping Hand is vital. For as little as $1 each pay you can make a significant contribution to members of the QPS family when they need it most. Thank you for Helping me!Julio (Jay) E SILVA-ORTIZDistrict Crime Prevention Unit Morningside

Overload of dietsThis is part 2 of an article by clinical pharmacist Anil Verma on obesity

TYPES OF DIETSBalanced low-calorie diets: Weight-reducing diets should eliminate alcohol, sugar-containing beverages and most highly concentrated sweets, because they rarely contain adequate amounts of other nutrients besides energy. When weight increases as a result of overeating, approximately 75 per cent of the extra energy is stored as fat and the remaining 25 per cent as lean tissueLow-fat diets: Low-fat diets are another standard strategy to help patients lose weight and almost all dietary guidelines recommend a reduction in the daily intake of fat. Fat has 9.4 kcal/gLow-carbohydrate diets: Low and very low-carbohydrate diets are more effective for short-term weight loss than low-fat diets, although probably not for long-term weight loss. Low-carbohydrate diets may have some other beneficial effects with regard to risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease.A low-carbohydrate diet can be implemented in two ways, either by reducing the total amount of carbohydrate or by consuming foods with a lower glycemic index Glycemic index of foodsFood Glycemic indexBaked russet potato 135

Cornflakes 119White bread 100Whole meal bread 99Brown rice 96Raisins 93White rice 83Banana (raw) 79All-Bran 73Sweet potato 70Spaghetti (white) 66Spaghetti (whole wheat) 61Baked beans (tinned) 60Ice cream, yogurt, whole milk, apple (raw) 49-53Red lentils 43Soya beans (tinned) 20Data from: Jenkins, DJ, Wolever, TM, Jenkins, AL, et al, Lancet 1984; 2:388.Most diabetic patients eating very low-calorie diets have marked

improvement in hyperglycaemia. Blood glucose concentrations fall within the first one to two weeks and remain lower as long as the diet is continued. The side-effects of very low-calorie diets include hair loss, thinning of the skin, and coldness. These diets are contraindicated for lactating and pregnant women and in children who require protein for linear growth. Very low-calorie diets should be reserved for subjects who require rapid weight loss for a specific purpose such as surgery. The weight regain when the diet is stopped is often rapid. Although a low-carbohydrate diet may be associated with greater short-term weight loss, superior weight loss in the long-term has not been established.

How’s your New Year’s Resolution to get fit and healthy in 2012 going? If you haven’t quite got into the swing of things yet, for whatever reason, don’t fret! But don’t keep pushing your health aside either. Time seems to go by quicker and quicker these days, and it’ll be Christmas again before you know it. Dance Night

A NEW season of corporate bowls has begun at Mt Gravatt Bowls Club. Four separate competitions are run each year, each of eight weeks duration. The current competition starts on January 31 and is on every Tuesday from 6.15pm to 7.30pm. Competition is open to employees and employers from businesses, association members of the many non-profit organisations in our area as well as individuals from various organisations who want to put a team together. The competition is deliberately run outside normal work hours in recognition of the hours available to businesses people. This is also a great opportunity to network with and meet other people.A team comprises four players who do not require previous bowling experience as instruction

and guidance are provided. You will be surprised at how quickly you adapt to the game. You will require two bowls, however the club will provide them if you do not have your own.The game is played on the undercover all weather green, which means you know you will be playing regardless of the weather. Cost, which includes the game of bowls, bowls supplied if required and a sausage sizzle after the game is $10 per person per night. The idea of the event is to enjoy yourself. If you have ever played barefoot bowls and thought you may like to take another step and play in a team, or just watched the game and are curious as to how you would go, this is your opportunity. For more information, contact Kevin on 3349 9695 or Col on 33492562.

Phil Reeves MPState Member for Mansfield

MEMBER for Stretton Stephen Robertson has urged parents to familiarise themselves with the changes to state school holidays that take effect from this year.“When planning family holidays this year, it’s important for Stretton parents to be aware that some school breaks are at different times and for different durations from previous years,” Mr Robertson said. This year’s Easter holidays will be extended from six days to two weeks after a 10-week first term. For state schools, the 2012 Easter holidays will begin on Saturday, March 31 and students will go back to school for term two on Monday, April 16.Mr Robertson said the changes followed feedback that long first terms were tiring, especially for younger students, student-free days scattered throughout the year were disruptive for working parents and that the current Easter holidays did not align with many non-state school vacations.“There will also be an extra public holiday this year for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,” he said. The Queen's Birthday will be celebrated on the first Monday in October and a special holiday to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee will be held in June. Mr Robertson said the special, one-off Queen's Diamond Jubilee holiday would allow community and sporting events planned

and booked for the June long weekend in 2012 to continue without disruption. The move follows feedback on a discussion paper titled Getting the Balance Right, a proposal on holidays in Queensland which sought feedback on various holiday proposals."The changes were subject to consultation and Queenslanders in overwhelming numbers supported the proposals,” he said.“We have moved three student-free days so that the Easter state school holiday can be extended to two weeks. This will mean less disruption for Stretton families and more help for parents to plan for holidays and childcare needs, while still giving teachers essential time to plan, boost professional development and keep our classrooms at the cutting edge. Teacher professional development will occur on the student-free days during the holidays."About 81 per cent of 23,700 online responses supported the extension of the Easter state school holiday to two weeks."Mr Robertson said the extended state school Easter holiday break was a positive move."Having two weeks at Easter means that it is possible to have more regular 10-week terms and that is good for parents, teachers and students," he said.

THE Mount Gravatt Men’s Shed has taken a giant step in its history. On January 31, the first sod was turned at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds by Phil Reeves, the State Member for Mansfield and Minister for Child Safety and Sport. This ground-breaking occasion was attended by Men’s Shed members and their families and local dignitaries.President Brian Wheeler said work would then start almost immediately on the new building.‘The building should be completed within four months, weather permitting,” Brian said.“We are looking to save money by obtaining materials and some services at cost. Among the new materials we are looking for at a very reasonable cost are concrete, concrete blocks, doors, timber roof trusses, insulation,

toilet items, steel reinforcing, windows, roller doors, corrugated iron roofing, wall sheeting and kitchen cupboards.”Raine & Horne Upper Mt Gravatt recently donated $10,000 to boost the funds for the new building. The firm also will donate $1000 for every property sold by the agency on the basis of a referral by a Men’s Shed member. With paid-up membership now touching 140, the next meeting will be held in the Community Hall at the Showgrounds at 11am for 11.30am on Monday, February 6.Guest speaker will be Michelle Nielsen, who will explain the benefits of the Lighten Up Program and how to participate in it.Lighten Up was developed by and is funded by Queensland Health. It assists people to eat well and be active, manage stress and make

long-term behaviour changes to support a healthy lifestyle. The last social meeting for 2011 was the Christmas Party at Mt Gravatt Bowls Club. Attended by more than 100, the occasion was once again a tribute to the organising capabilities of Elwyn Jackson.Guests included Cabinet Ministers Phil Reeves and Cameron Dick, local councillor Krista Adams and hydraulic engineer Neil Blair and architects Mark Williams and Lindal Lawson, all of whom rendered valuable assistance to Bob Pope in the preparation for the shed construction.Highlights of the dinner were the announcement of a new lease with the Showground Trust and the presentation of three $100 Bunnings vouchers by Graeme Smith of Mt Gravatt Rotary.

THE Mount Gravatt Vultures have received a favourable draw for this season’s Foxtel Cup.The Vultures are drawn to meet East Coast Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground on May 5. Coach Andrew Mellor said East Coast, a new side in the North East Australian Football League, were beatable.“If we can progress past the newcomers, we are scheduled to meet either West Adelaide or Claremont, who will be a lot harder,” Mellor said.

“We don’t know much about East Coast Sydney, who are a new side and have reportedly recruited heavily. Hopefully by May 5 we will have footage of them playing and we can rely on local knowledge of them playing Canberra clubs.”The Vultures, who resumed training on January 10, are still talking to a couple of players around the country.“We have been undergoing our usual off-season training but on Saturday mornings have been breaking into four different groups,

with one going on a bike ride, one on a run, one doing ball work and one a different form of exercise,” Mellor said.“We also have done a cross session at Mt Coot-tha with the Queensland Firebirds, rowers and Wynnum Manly Seagulls, the Queensland Cup rugby league premiers. Anthony Wood, our strength and conditioning trainer, works with the Seagulls and he is creating a real buzz with our players.”

Sharks snap up talentIN an Olympic year, it’s only fitting to pay tribute to one of the countless swimming clubs that nurtures arguably our nation’s greatest Olympic sport. The Wishart Sharks Swim Club enjoys a long and proud history going back more than 40 years when Ian Nibloe first raised the idea of a club at a P&C meeting of the then Mt Gravatt South State School. But the idea of raising money to build a pool for the school had been raised a year before. It was a long struggle to convince everyone that a pool was a worthwhile idea and to gather the necessary funds. But the pioneers persevered and the pool was completed on January 31, 1978 and officially opened on March 17 that year. Although the club and school’s name changed, today hundreds of youngsters take advantage of the facilities on offer at Wishart State School during the club night each Friday of the swimming season. The club nights are a chance for club members to get out and have a good time competing against their own previous times as well as against their friends. Times from club nights are used to select the team for inter-club competitions.Club nights are generally a rather lively affair, with much shouting and excitement. There is a canteen that provides drinks

and snacks and the club runs a barbecue that serves up top-notch steak burgers, chicken burgers and sausages for the kids. It would be hard to find a better and more relaxing way to wind down from a week of work.So come along, let the kids hit the pool, grab a burger and a drink and join in the community that is the Wishart Sharks Swim Club. On Friday nights swimmers can participate in races in all four strokes. Events range from 25 metres to 100 metres. For very young swimmers the club starts each evening with a special 15m race where swimmers can be assisted by other siblings to complete the race. The club also has an active competition schedule against other clubs, with meets held at both home and away. Club members are encouraged to participate in inter-club meets, but participation is optional. “We try to ensure we have at least one B grade carnival each year to give those children who have not been selected to compete in other carnivals, the opportunity to be part of a competition team against other local clubs,” president Susan Sherrington said.“Membership is open to all and the club welcome swimmers from both Wishart State School and the wider community.

“The club’s aim is to encourage swimming confidence and introduce children to the fun of racing in a supportive environment that focuses on participation and personal improvement.” The timetable for the night is: Gates open at 5.30pm, nominations close at 6.15pm, racing starts at 6.30pm and the night finishes about 9pm.Costs per family is only $80 a year plus $40 for a full season.
