Members are eagerly anticipating the laying of the blocks which will make up the walls and installation of the roof and completion of the building to lock-up stage by the middle of the year. So far, activities for members have been confined to monthly meetings with guest presenters and two woodworking groups as well as a large number of community support projects. The facilities provided by a permanent building will allow expansion of activities offered to include such things as communication literacy, men’s health issues, personal safety and any other interest which may arise. The Shed will also provide, on a daily basis, the opportunity for a “cuppa and a chat”. However, as membership soars to more than 140, with an average attendance of 90 at monthly meetings, these gatherings will still have to be held at a larger venue. Acting Sen-Sgt Alasdair MacLeod said car owners when at home were not securing their keys but were leaving them in convenient spots such as kitchen benches or near the front door. “To make matters worse, car owners when they are home are not locking their doors or windows and offenders are sneaking in and acquiring the keys,” he said. “People are still very blasé about vehicle security, especially considering a vehicle is their second largest purchase after their home and they are not looking after their keys.” Acting Senior Sgt MacLeod said a number of these vehicles had been used in criminal activities that are currently receiving significant media attention, such as ram raids on Brisbane’s southside. He said South Brisbane was suffering the same complaints as other police districts in south-east Queensland. “Even if people regain their stolen vehicles, they have been driven hard and not cared for like their owners would,’’ he said. “It is necessary for car owners to be thinking about the security of their keys and also to remain vigilant. “There also have been a number of incidents of vehicle break-ins and number plates being stolen from vehicles. A CRIME trend has come to the doorstep of motor vehicle owners. Police say that because cars manufactured since 2000 cannot be started without a key, offenders are targeting drivers’ homes to obtain car keys with there being a current trend in vehicle crime within Metropolitan South.“For example, we had two cars stolen at the weekend where people left them in their carports unlocked and with the keys in them,” the acting officer in charge of Upper Mount Gravatt said.Acting Sen-Sgt Alasdair MacLeod said car owners when at home were not securing their keys but were leaving them in convenient spots such as kitchen benches or near the front door.“To make matters worse, car owners when they are home are not locking their doors or windows and offenders are sneaking in and acquiring the keys,” he said.“People are still very blasé about vehicle security, especially considering a vehicle is their second largest purchase after their home and they are not looking after their keys.”

From the General ManagerWELCOME to the April 2012 edition of the Southside Community News. Local charitable, sporting and community groups have until April 30 to submit an application for the Southside Community Benefits Grants scheme.Grants are available from $250 up to $4000 and are designed to assist smaller groups who are not eligible for main stream Government funding. In the past we have assisted a wide range of community activities and services, including junior sport, school P & C committees, historical, environmental, aged care and disability services to name a few. To download an application form and view the eligibility criteria, log on to our website at www.southsidesport.com.au and click on “Community” in the menu bar and then “Community Benefits Grants”. Otherwise, you can ring Melissa on 3219 1103 or contact her on [email protected] for more information.Wet weather during March caused some delays but the new kitchen at the Southern Cross Sports Club is up and running. On behalf of Club Manager Damien Boyce, Head Chef Steven Eyles and the staff, I want to offer a big thank-you to our very loyal patrons who supported the club during the four weeks

when the kitchen was closed.Steve and his offsider Chef Daniel did an excellent job cooking up a storm on the barbeque with a limited menu. I received reports of some sensational steaks being served so we can expect an even better menu and food service standard with the new kitchen. The wet weather also played havoc with the installation of the new air-conditioning plant for the dining area and the gaming room. Hopefully, by the time you read this column the project will also be completed, providing good clean air-conditioning throughout the club. It is a pity our patrons do not really see what has been done, unlike an upgrade to the décor, but the benefits will certainly be noticed with high quality clean air circulating around the club premises. With the air-conditioning upgrade completed at Southern Cross Sports Club, we will now move on to the main premises in Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road. The last of the old original air-conditioning units in the bingo auditorium will be replaced during winter. These two units would have been installed in 1976, and despite a number of upgrades, it goes to show they don’t make them like that anymore because we are also replacing another unit in the bingo auditorium and one in the club restaurant area that are only 10 and eight years old respectively. As with Southern Cross Sports Club, this project represents a significant investment in patron comfort.Planning is well under way for the Stage 5 redevelopment at Southside Sport and Community Club. Stage 5 (a) will include a significant expansion and the upgrading of the gaming area and the relocation of the bingo canteen. It is hoped that work will start in July. Watch this space.. See you at Southside,Graham Chattin

WITH the winter months quickly approaching, the work of the Southside Community Craft Circle takes on more significance.Local co-ordinator Wendy McFadzean and her merry band of helpers last month completed their 10,000th item for donation to Queensland’s needy. With the momentous achievement celebrated on March 23 (and photographs will be published in May’s Southside Community News), the group quickly switched its attention to the cooler months on the way.“Our group is mostly pensioners and we have the time and ability to make the items, but lack the funds to purchase the yarns,” Wendy said.“So many people have or know someone who has yarn in a cupboard that will never be used. Others in the community might be happy to purchase some knowing it will help disadvantaged Queensland kids, however adults in Brisbane also are helped.

“Anyone who loves to craft and want to help others is welcome to join us.’’The craft circle started in August 2009 when community-minded people decided to gather together in Southside Brisbane City Council libraries and other venues to create items to assist the disadvantaged in this state. Last year the group, which has no fees, donated 3736 items.“The items we create are given to established groups in our community, who assist the local disadvantaged and homeless on the streets of Brisbane and children entering foster care in Queensland,” Wendy said.“Donations will mainly be distributed by Project Love and Care, Student Care Welfare and other local organisations as needed. “Since the devastating Brisbane floods in 2011, we are proud to have provided 1527 items, especially rugs and curtains, to Brisbane flood-affected families. We were the only craft group

handing out hand-made donations such as clothing and rugs at “Flood Fairs” in Fairfield, Rocklea and Oxley.”The Southside Community Craft Circle recently met at the Holland Park Library to show their beautiful products and to inform Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Chandler Ward Adrian Schrinner and Cr Ian McKenzie of their activities. THREE weeks of barbecues have been worth it for members of Southern Cross Sports Club. The Club’s kitchen was closed last month for a much-anticipated upgrade of cooking equipment and facilities, along with an air-conditioning system replacement, with Southside pumping $500,000 into the revamp.“A lot of work needed to be done and the only way we could see it being done was to close the kitchen and operate from barbecues,” Club Manager Damien Boyce said.“The work started on March 1 and we were anticipating a final handover on March 22.

We now possess bigger and better cooktops and were able to undertake a full refurbishment of the kitchen’s roofing and walls.”Mr Boyce said one of the major projects completed was the installation of a stand-alone cold room which allowed staff to be able to walk in and select goods.“We also were able to get rid of the old keg room and we now are the proud owners of a completely new beer reticulation system,” he said.“Our beer has always been very good but these improvements will take it to a new level. The system upgrade includes new glycol system

and it has been relocated to the large cold room in the storage area”.“We now use a compressor rather than the older-style beer gas so I’m sure beer drinkers will give it the stamp of approval.”Damien said that it was unfortunate that the members and guests would not be able to readily see the work that has been done because it was a total back of house project. “But I’m sure that they will notice the quality and consistency of our meals will reach a new peak,” he said. “The food and beverage systems are all new and we will be the top of our game.”He said it made sense to overhaul the Club’s air-conditioning system at the same time as the kitchen.“We have removed the old system totally and installed a fully new system with this costing between $200,000 and $300,000,” he said.“We are also looking at the front of house down the track with interior decorators and architects to be called in for advice.“It’s all good news for patrons as we now have full menus operating and the function room also is back trading as per usual.“I would like to thank our patrons for their patience over this month and for supporting us. The barbecues were such a success that we are now even looking at holding a barbecue once a month in a blast from the past.”

EACH year the Rotary Club of Wishart undertakes to give out Community Service Awards to members of the public who while going about their everyday business, make a huge difference to the lives of others. These are the unsung heroes of our suburbs; the everyday man who takes just that little bit of extra care and attention and gives of his time selflessly whether in their profession or just as a selfless act of kindness. These people do not expect to be rewarded for what they see as “normal’’ and are taken aback and very pleasantly surprised to be honored in this wayWishart Rotary members are proud of this tradition to acknowledge local people it is good to know that these people are out there and doing such a good job.The people and volunteer organisations honored on

February 27 were:• Upper Mt Gravatt Community Craft Group represented by Mrs Margaret Paulsen• The Diggers Dozen, working out of Greenslopes Private Hospital, represented by Mrs Joan Harriss • Mr Bruce Van Der Meer from the St. Vincent De Paul Society• Ms Bronwyn Healey representing the Hope Foundation giving hope and dignity to drug or alcohol-addicted women or women working in the sex trade, who would like to change their lives• Ms Debbie Moore from Autism Queensland, who introduced us to one of the wonderful ladies that Autism Queensland looks after.• Mr Warren Hosking from the breakdown crew of the RACQ, who at the urging of his 14-year-old daughter Latara helped a family in need – initially to fix a car and then once he knew the family’s plight went on to organise

several barbecues and benefits to help them. These people live by what Rotarians believe in, ordinary people doing extraordinary things. If you would like to know more about Rotary International, visit the website or if you have someone whom you think would be a good candidate for our awards next year, do not hesitate to contact our Rotary club (details on the website).

FOR most people, the thought of having a personal trainer feels out of their reach. They automatically think: “Only Olympians or Athletes need them.”“It’s a luxury to have a personal trainer and I can’t afford one.”“Why do I need a personal trainer if I know how to use the equipment?”When talking to a personal trainer at the Y, you will find someone who is genuinely interested in your health. A YMCA personal trainer can help you define your goal and create an achievable plan to reach that goal. They will hold you accountable and keep you motivated through different workout routines that will help you reach and maintain a healthy body.Seventy-five per cent of people who exercise are not getting the results they want, but of the 25 per cent who are succeeding, 90 per cent of them are working with a personal trainer, according to the International Health and Fitness Association.Success goes far beyond the results you can see on the outside. Rehabilitation, a healthier life style and the ability to cut down on medication are all potential positive results of personal training. We have seen people balance their sugar level, stop using medications and walk without aid devices for the first time in years.Mums and dads are now offering their kids more activity and joining them doing it and we are seeing more and more young people take a conscious effort to improve their health. The diverse group of people we train sets the Y apart from other fitness facilities. Our personal trainers work with people of all ages and backgrounds. Our trainers stay up to date on health education and the latest trends to serve the diverse needs of our members. We offer one-on-one training, partner training and group training.Come to the Y and talk to a personal trainer to see how you can reach your fitness goals.52 Freda Street, Mount Gravatt or call 3349 8646.

LOYALTY is the key word at Southside Sport & Community Club.Loyalty to our members and loyalty to local community businesses. With that in mind, the Southside Club has launched its Fiesta CARnival promotion over the next three months. In association with Bryan Byrt Ford at Upper Mt Gravatt, the Club will give away one Ford Fiesta each month during April, May and June.“For April and May we will give one lucky member a Fiesta CL automatic while in June there will be one upmarket Fiesta Zetec up for grabs,” Southside General Manager Graham Chattin said.“It is important to us that we obtained the vehicles from Bryan Byrt because they are a local business and also have been supporters of ours and advertisers in the Southside Community News.”Mr Chattin said entries into CARnival can be gained by members using their membership cards throughout the Club.“We have the three Fiestas on display now in the Club, one in the foyer, one in the lounge dining area and third in the middle of the bingo hall,” he said.“The vast majority of our wonderful bingo players are also club members and every time they swipe their cards buying bingo tickets they go into the draw.“We will have 20 keys in each of the car draws in April, May and June with draws for keys on

each Saturday of the month.”“And then on the day of each of the big car draws, members can simply swipe their membership card at the loyalty kiosk and they will have an entry on the day for one Wild Card key.”Matthew Woods and Graham Wheeler of the Bryan Byrt group said the motor vehicle dealers valued their connection to the Southside family of clubs.“Like Southside, we value

loyalty in our customers and local businesses,” they said. “With these Fiestas on offer, we are certain the winning club members will feel the difference.“The Fiesta has safety-conscious features in a true city car which is very economical to run. The Zetec on offer in June is a sporting model with smart body kit, alloy wheels, a cutting edge style, sports seats and a total of seven airbags.”

SECURITY is each householder’s responsibility. Open or closed but unlocked doors and windows present opportunities for those dishonest few.The majority of break and enters reported to police are actually gaining entry through open doors or windows. More often than not this type of offence occurs while the occupant of the residence is at home, either watching television in another room, sleeping or out in the garden. The first step to home security is to actually use it. However, police do not suggest that you create a fortress out of your home.If there are no security measures in place in the home, consider installing them. If you are unsure as to what measure or products to install, seek advice and use common sense. If you have doors and windows open that are not protected with security screens or bars, keep an eye on them. When you leave the house, check to ensure that all doors are locked. We all need to breath in summer, but thieves take advantage of that fact. Here are a dozen DONT’S which will help you to protect your home while you are at home or away. Remember housebreakers spend an average of only 10 minutes inside a home, just long enough to shatter your peace of mind.1. DON’T advertise your absence by allowing mail, junk mail or newspapers to accumulate.2. DON’T hide your keys outside your house.3. DON’T leave your blinds or curtains closed if you’re going to be away for some time.4. DON’T forget to tell your local police that you will be absent for some time and give them your holiday address and contact numbers for you, family or friends who may have a key to your house. Advise your insurance company if the house will be unoccupied for any period greater

than the policy allows.5. DON’T leave any notes advertising that you are not home or that you may not be home for some time. Thieves can read too.6. DON’T rely on outdated locks and security equipment. Fit modern deadlocks on all outside doors.7. DON’T leave ladders or tools around the house for the thief to use.8. DON’T go out without locking ALL doors and windows of the house, garage, downstairs or outbuildings. Key-lock your windows if possible.9. DON’T forget to arrange for a neighbour to collect free delivery newspapers, perhaps cut the grass and even have them park their spare car in your driveway if possible. This gives the appearance that someone is at home.10. DON’T let shrubs grow beyond window level. They can provide good coverage and hiding places for the burglar.11. DON’T forget to switch on external lighting at dusk and leave on the usual lights if you go out for the evening. Consider installing a time-switch to activate internal lighting or equipment (radio).12. DON’T forget to keep a record of your valuable property. Note the make, model and serial number. Obtain an engraving tool from your local police station to engrave your property and or use data-dot technology.SECURITY IS EVERYBODY’S BUSINESSContact your police for more information on any crime prevention topic. If you’re unsure as to what measures of security you can install in your home, please contact your local police for information on any crime prevention topic. Sgt Michelle MULLeN, officer in charge, district crime prevention coordinators, South Brisbane District.

Don’t invite a burglar inPREPARATIONS for Anzac Day, which this year falls on a Wednesday, are well and truly under way at Sunnybank RSL Sub Branch. In addition to the various commemoration services on the day, the Sub Branch is also involved in a range of other activities in the local community. Some of these include:• School ServicesParticipation in Anzac Day services at the schools, primary and high, public and private in our area at the invitation of the schools concerned. These services are held in the week leading up to Anzac Day with the majority held on the last school day. The Sub Branch tries to have two to three members attend each service, one of whom is a team leader to be involved in one or two activities including:• A ceremony called The Passing of the Australian Spirit, where RSL representatives pass on two Australian flags and two poppies to students, usually the school captains, symbolising the passing of the Australian spirit from one generation to the next.• Being invited to speak to those gathered in regard to the significance of Anzac Day to our nation. All schools are invited to participate in the district march and main district commemoration service on Anzac Day.• District Anzac Day March Community groups, cadet units and schools in the area are invited to join the district Anzac Day march which departs the corner of Turton Street and Station Road, Sunnybank at 8am on Anzac Day.• Main District Commemoration Service at the District War MemorialCommunity leaders and groups are invited to join the Sub Branch for the main District Commemoration Service at the District War Memorial, Gager Street, Sunnybank at 8.30am following the march.• Dawn March and ServiceIn addition to the District March and Commemoration Service, the Sub Branch also conducts a

THE training for this year’s Rio Tinto Ride To Conquer Cancer ride has claimed a victim. One of the Team FatBoyz members, who have featured recently in Southside Community News, was hit by a car last month. Members report that she was badly bruised and grazed her face but thankfully the helmet saved her from further injury. The team was formed after learning their friend Warren Mah was battling bowel cancer. Warren went into hospital for a lung operation last month with cancer cut from his left lung. He has to go back in a month for the right lung, however he is recovering well and only a week after being discharged from hospital he was

back on his bike and completed the BDO-Mt Coot-tha Challenge, an 85km journey up and down the hills of Brisbane. The team continues to ride on weekends with several members participating in the BDO-Mt Coot-tha Challenge. Rides this month include Ipswich 100 (100km) and Ipswich to Brisbane (65km).With a fundraising target of $70,000, Team FatBoyz has reached more than $45,000 with more funds to come from a sausage sizzle St Mathews Anglican Church on election day and a family photo day on March 25. These will be followed by a movie night in early April. Planning for a classical concert is also under way. Held in the Concert Hall

of the Old Museum Building on Saturday, July 14, Vivaldi’s complete Four Seasons will be played by international violinist Attilla Sautov and his chamber orchestra. COMMUNITY pride is alive and well in the southern suburbs. Two of the many Clean Up Australia day sites in February were the Mt Gravatt Summit and Mt Gravatt Showgrounds. The Mt Gravatt Environment Group attacked the Summit. Under the coordination of Kristie Olsson, 25 participants joined in, including Cr Krista Adams.“We removed 11 recycle bags and 10 general waste bags as well as a tyre, chair and metal,” Kristie said.“Walking tracks were surprisingly clean, although the roadsides and summit were littered with bottles, takeaway food wrappers and broken glass.”

A team from Queensland Institute of Business Technology also joined the clean-up at the Summit. At the Showgrounds, attendees were coordinated by Guide Leader Lizi Drysdale at the start of a partnership with Mt Gravatt Environment Group to develop the first Pollinator Link. For the record, an estimated 591,400 volunteers removed a staggering 16,170 tonnes of rubbish from 7363 clean-up sites across the country. Ian Kiernan of Clean Up Australia thanked the hard-working volunteers who made the 22nd Clean Up Australia Day a successful one.

A GROUP of amateur movie makers has started production of a short documentary on Dubai.Meeting twice a month at the Southern Cross Club, Klumpp Rd, Mt Gravatt, members of Club Camcorder are enthusiastic about their new project. Headed by professional documentary maker John Westwood of Redgum Television Productions, club members will embark on a learning exercise which will encompass most facets of film production.“Individuals can learn at their own pace and focus on the areas of movie making in which they are most interested,” said John, who is also Club President.“Working on a project like this encourages individuals to understand more about their hobby.”The project will run through until Christmas and include the various arts of sound recording, writing, editing and video taking.New members are welcome to participate in the project and no previous experience is required.Club Camcorder meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at 7.30pm. Many members enjoy an inexpensive dinner at the Southern Cross Sporting Club before the meeting. Membership inquiries can be directed to Fay Finlay on 3397 2315.

The restaurant trade in the Upper Mt Gravatt area is rich in ethnicity depth, and it is a wonderful thing to experience the food of other cultures. But, whatever happened to the good old Aussie cuisine that most of us remember from our childhood. The Mt Gravatt Bowls Club wants to bring those rich flavours back, but at a reasonable price that everyone can afford. The Club offers ‘The Great Aussie Mash’ special menu every Wednesday Night from 5.30pm.

Come on in and enjoy the classics such as; bangers & mash, mixed grill and vegetables or the Aussie favourite steak, eggs and chips. Vegetarians haven’t been forgotten with this menu, there is a vegetable stock pot pie that I guarantee will not only astound with the sheer size, but the taste is unbelievable. By Nathan Francis, Acupuncturist, Soothe Acupuncture and Tui Na BodyworkLet’s say you are in pain and you find paracetomol doesn’t help.Aspirin doesn’t agree with your stomach and you are cautious of stronger medications.Fortunately, you have alternatives – natural ones. There are many herbs that address inflammation and physical therapies that tap into the body’s remarkable healing mechanism to ease pain from arthritis, fibromyalgia and even muscle strains. The highly influential Time Magazine recently reported that acupuncture and massage are particularly effective in reducing pain. Its 21 March edition last year was devoted to understanding pain and it said acupuncture was “the workhorse of alternative medicine [that] has been shown to ease conditions from joint pain to insomnia”.AcupunctureAcupuncture has been shown in clinical research studies to reduce pain associated with migraine and headache, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, fibromyalgia, low-back pain, neck pain, knee pain, menstrual cramps, muscular pain and tennis elbow.Time Magazine showcased a 2009 study in the Journal of Acupuncture in Medicine, which found that in four trials involving more than 1000 people, “46 per cent who got 10 acupuncture sessions over six weeks responded with a decline in lower-back pain”.“Only 27 per cent who received standard treatment – anti-inflammatory drugs, exercise and physical therapy – enjoyed pain relief,” the magazine said.Time also reported on another study on the effectiveness of acupuncture for migraine. It said sufferers who got acupuncture also had fewer migraines than those who took pain medications.Even nine months after their last acupuncture treatment, patients who received acupuncture were doing better than those treated with medications.

Remedial massageTime Magazine referred to a number of studies showing that massage reduced pain by as much as 64 per cent and relieved stress.“New research shows that even a single deep-tissue massage can help stop the production of stress hormones,” it said.“Massage has also been shown to relieve cancer pain.’’A study published last year in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine reports that even one massage session can result in a significant decrease in the hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP). AVP constricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure, which causes agitation and spikes in pain.HerbsTurmeric (a curry ingredient) contains curcumin, which eases inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, according to the Methodist Research Institute in the US.Arnica is from a European flower. Although its healing mechanism is still unknown, it does have natural anti-inflammatory properties. Taking oral homeopathic arnica after a tonsillectomy decreases pain, say British researchers, and German doctors found that it reduces surgery-related knee swelling.SAM-e is made from a naturally occurring amino acid and sold as capsules. Doctors aren't entirely sure why it reduces pain, but it lowers inflammation and may increase the feel-good brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine.MSM is derived from sulfur and may prevent joint and cartilage degeneration, say scientists from University of California, San Diego.HeatThe next time your back goes out, reach for a heat pack straight away.A review of nine clinical trials has shown that heat can reduce back pain and that exercise, when used with heat, can reduce pain further. So the next time you are in pain, consider one of these alternatives.

Pain relief comes naturally

Look out for koalas on KlumppLORD Mayor Graham Quirk announced that council has installed koala warning signs at Klumpp Road, Upper Mt Gravatt to ensure motorist and wildlife safety along the busy thoroughfare.Local Councillor Krista Adams (Wishart Ward) said the decision to install the signage followed a request from the Mt Gravatt Environment Group after the death of a koala on four-lane Klumpp Rd in December last year.“Mt Gravatt Reserve has a growing koala population with an increase in the number of sightings over the past year,” Cr Adams said. “This is about protecting our native animals as well as ensuring the safety of motorists who travel in the area. “These signs will encourage motorists to keep an eye out for koalas that might have ventured onto this busy road and in turn help reduce the number that get injured or killed by cars.”Michael Fox of the Mount Gravatt Environment Group said he had received have regular and increasing frequency of koala sightings on the mountain, including mothers with joeys. Google Earth mapping and photos provided solid evidence, he said.“Mt Gravatt Environment Group is working with 18 private property owners and council to restore wildlife corridors between Fox Gully Bushcare site and Mimosa Creek,” Mr Fox said.“Cr Adams has been an active supporter of our restoration work. On behalf of Mt Gravatt Environment Group, I thank Krista

for her fast and effective action.” Cr Adams said in the past four years Cr Quirk and his team had invested about $27 million on planting two million trees across Brisbane to protect the environmental future of the city. The two millionth tree was planted at Mt Gravatt Lookout in February this year.“On top of planting two million

trees, we’ve also protected more than 500 hectares of environmentally significant land through our Bushland Acquisition Program,” Cr Adams said.Residents are encouraged to report all fauna sightings by telephoning the Brisbane City Council call centre on 3403 8888. Pancakes make cents for charitiesMORE than 600 Mansfield High students joined the long queue to buy their tickets and enjoy the delights of the annual Pancake Day, a major charity fundraising event on the school calendar. An army of dedicated volunteers from the Rauchle Service Club cooked, flipped, served and scooped until the hungry masses were all fed.Pancake Day was the culmination of many weeks of planning and preparation with club members giving up their time to create posters, stock fridges and make

pancake batter from scratch. Support also came from other areas of the school community. The Year 10/11 SAS Business Group designed and produced the tickets for the day.Proceeds from this year’s Pancake Day will be used to continue sponsoring the education of two students from developing countries, Emmanuel in Papua New Guinea and Lauren in Tanzania. The money raised by Mansfield High students will pay for school

fees, uniforms and books. The Rauchle Service Club was formed in 2003 and consists of students who volunteer their time, talents and enthusiasm to help others. Every dollar raised by the students is used to support charities and causes in the wider community. The Rauchle Service Club is a regular supporter of Guide Dogs Queensland, The Smith Family, Mater Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Variety Club Christmas Party and CanTeen Queensland.

THE Mt Gravatt Hawks have lodged their application with Football Brisbane for the 2013 Premier League competition. This season there is no promotion or relegation as Football Brisbane has hit the reset button and is establishing a new league structure from 2013. Inclusion into the new league is via a tender process. Football Brisbane has put out an expression of interest and published criteria. “We put in a very good response and we are quietly confident that our application will be accepted,” said Hawks president Vince Sciacca.“The criteria were quite broad, including junior development, facilities, sponsorships and media relations, history and financial position. Mt Gravatt has a very strong financial position, thanks to the strong management by its board of directors and effective fiscal control by the club. “With the support of Southside, we are undertaking a redevelopment of the clubhouse and we will be constructing new dressing rooms and improved member facilities as part of a planned expansion of our clubhouse. “With the 20-year plan being put together by Southside, it will position Dittmer Park as a sporting hub for our local area. “Our junior development, which has seen no less than four Socceroos players come out of our stable, including Jade North, Jon McCain, Nathan Coe and Matt Mackay, is being extended with new partnerships and innovative approaches to developing junior players.” “It’s been a bit of a slow start to the season this year with rain and weather having interrupted a number of games already,” he said.“But we are confident that with a young squad and our focus on development this season that we will hit our stride in the second half of the season. “We have a very competitive side and a great deal more depth than we have had in previous years. We are wanting to take this season as an opportunity to blood new talent and planning for the new league in 2013.”The club’s popular Squirts Program (under three to five-year-olds) kicked off late last month and players are welcome to join at any time. The Hawks also have a limited number of vacancies in various age groups, so if any players are looking

to play for a family friendly club that caters for all levels of football, then they should contact the club. All of the latest information relating to the club’s programs, junior registration and what’s happening within the club visit www.mtgravatthawks.orgZOVA – Football Development with RhythmMr Sciacca said the club was working closely with Zova to deliver their “football to music” program to all junior players throughout the season. Zova is also running a program over the Easter holidays which will be open to players from other clubs. In 2011, Mt Gravatt trialled the Zova program (using music to learn football skills) with selected teams and overwhelmingly had positive feedback. Importantly the program focuses on an area that is lacking across most clubs and that is the acquisition, and through better coaching, the utilisation of skills in game situations. These skills form the basis of ongoing development for all players and are now a major factor in the development program for Mt Gravatt. The club has organised with Zova for five sessions throughout the season for every team, girls and boys from U6- U17 and across all divisions. From a development perspective, enjoyment and ability to improve, the Zova program offers key opportunities that have not been previously available.Following the formation of a partnership between Mt Gravatt, the Rangers Supporters Club and Rangers Football Club in Glasgow, Scotland, Rangers Soccer Schools has planned a clinic in the June-July holidays which will also be open to players from other clubs. The clinic will be held on July 2-6 at the Mt Gravatt grounds from 10am-3pm with lunch from noon-1pm.The clinic is open to all players from six to 16 across all football clubs, capped at 120 players, and will involve being coached by six coaches (one coach per 20 players) from the Rangers Academy who are travelling to Brisbane for this clinic. Flyers and payment details are being organized however costs for early birds will be about $250- $270, which also includes a water bottle and a Rangers Bag. Mt Gravatt members will have an early opportunity to register before it becomes widely released.

PLAYERS from St Bernard’s Netball Club are back on the courts for another season. In existence for more than a quarter of a century, the club plays in the MacGregor Netball Association, fielding eight teams this season. In her third term, president Jacqui Kennedy said about 70 girls from eight years to 16 years were taking part.“Only three or four of the younger players don’t go to St Bernard’s school and we find that about half of or older girls go on to Clairvaux College, so there’s a close tie

there,” Jacqui said.“We even had a few Clairvaux students who put back in to the club as assistant coaches for the younger age groups.”St Bernard’s Netball was a recipient of Cr Krista Adams’ Australia Day award and cheque earlier this year at Southside Sport & Community Club.

The season started last month and runs through until September. Juniors play on Saturday mornings from 8am until noon with seniors taking the courts from noon until 3pm.

“Our juniors train once a week under cover at St Bernard’s after school, the 10s, 11s and 12s train at Clairvaux College while the seniors gather once a week as a squad at MacGregor,” Jacqui said. She said there was a crying need for new dresses for the senior teams with the current skirts in their last season. “We want to stay with times and the girls are keen on dresses to play in,” she said. “We have been recycling our senior uniforms and they are quite tired. And we have to stay with the times.”

Netball season under way

Gilliland rejoins VulturesTHE practice matches are over and the Mt Gravatt Vultures are into the season proper with the NEAFL Northern Conference.Vultures coach Andrew Mellor said the club had signed all its list, including match-winner Nathan Gilliland, over whom doubts hung until late last month.“Nathan resigned but unfortunately on the same evening he did we lost Daniel Savage for the season with cruciate ligaments in a training track accident,” he said.“Nathan has been on his honeymoon and has had a limited preparation and I’m not sure if he will play in the seniors in the first

week of competition.”Mellor said his side had thumped an under-manned Lions in a practice match while also doing battle with Broadbeach.“We fielded a young side in the first half against Broadbeach and were outplayed but we won the second half with a more established lineup,” he said.“Our round one opponents are Aspley, whom we traditionally have trouble with and I expect to be one of the forces this season.”Mellor tipped a similar scenario in 2012 to last season where five sides were vying for fourth and fifth spots in the last week.

“You can never write off Morningside, although they will find it a bit tougher this year, while Aspley have recruited heavily in the off-season with the addition of state players and I expect Southport to be back in the finals frame also,” he said.“The Northern Territory will be right there in the mix as they are so hard to beat in Darwin while Gold Coast should figure and Broadbeach will be hard to beat with some big, strong bodies in there.“Even Redlands and Labrador could figure in what I anticipate will be another really even competition.”

Fun run for all agesTHE annual Rotary Fun Run will be staged on Sunday, April 15.Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Sunnybank Hills, Salisbury and Wishart, the fun run (or walk) is over 7km and 11km courses at the Nathan Campus of Griffith University off Kessels Road. The start and finish of the race will be at the cinema complex, with best entry from Kessels Road. The course follows paved walkways throughout the campus

and will provide enjoyment and challenge for the beginner, the walker (7km course) and the more serious of runners (11km course). Water will be available en-route. There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks for sale near the assembly area during and at the end of the race. There will be prizes for entries in four categories while random prize draws will also occur during the race.
