Spirited Southside groups celebratecommunity awardsA NUMBER of hard-working Southside groups have landed top cash prizes in this year’s Bus Com-munity Spirit Awards [CSA].

Various amounts of €1,000, €2,000 and €5,000 were awarded in a special ceremony in Croke Park to honour local heroes that help improve services, develop new projects and build community spirit across Dublin.

From youth to age action groups, the awards are designed to help bring communities alive by supporting volunteers who em-body the real spirit of Dublin com-munities in a whole host of groups from education to sports to advo-cacy to support.

Former Irish international foot-baller Niall Quinn was on hand as guest of honour and patron of the initiative to host the evening and present the well deserved winners with their awards.

Among the 84 winners across Dublin awarded the top grant of €5,000 was the Down Syndrome Centre, Leopardstown, a charity dedicated to providing support and services to families and carers

of people with Down Syndrome. They will use this much needed financial assistance to create an occupational therapy room and equipment.

The Daisyhouse Housing As-sociation, located in Portobello, is a charity and approved hous-ing body that provides supported temporary accommodation with uniquely tailored individual per-sonal support programmes to women who are homeless. Their award will go towards continuing to offer personalised support pro-grammes and accommodation.

Another Southside winner, Ballinteer Community School, is a mixed school for children aged 12-18 in South County Dublin that will now be able to deliver a posi-tive mental health initiative for its young students.

And Just ASK, based in the city centre, supports secondary school students who struggle to find space to do homework and require

assistance. With their CSA grant they will be able to provide space and healthy meals for children at-tending their services.

Since the first awards in 2004, over 1,500 voluntary groups, from family resource centres to scout troops, have benefitted from the Dublin Bus Community Spirit Awards which uses unclaimed pas-senger change to fund grassroots voluntary groups around the capi-tal. Commenting on the night of the Community Spirit Awards, Ray Coyne, CEO of Dublin Bus, said: “Through the Community Spirit Awards we see the importance of local voluntary groups.

“I would like to congratulate all 84 winners on their awards and the work they do all year long. This initiative has allowed Dublin Bus and its customers to directly sup-port the local communities that we service every day. Over the last 11 years we have seen the difference winning a Community Spirit Award

can make to voluntary groups and communities across the capital and the invaluable support that these groups can then offer to those who use these services.”

Dublin Bus Community Spirit Awards patron Niall Quinn added: “Since the first awards over 10 years ago we have seen the im-portance of the Community Spirit Awards and the difference winning an award makes to communities throughout the Greater Dublin Area. A total of 84 groups will benefit tonight from unclaimed passenger change and voluntary

groups around the city will get some much needed help in con-

tinuing to provide services in communities that need it.”

accessibility. Speaking on behalf of the MummyPages community, Laura Haugh, Mum-in-Residence with the website, said: “Our mums are very upset that the Government has not only wasted €40 million on the badly thought out Mater site for the new National Children’s Hospital, but

that they are about to make an even bigger mistake now with the new proposed site at St James’s.

“Thankfully, not all of our mums have had to face the arduous journey to hospital when a child is seriously ill. Nor have they all had to endure long days, weeks or even months of medical

treatment to help a sick child. However, all of our mums

acknowledge the invaluable advice from their peers both offline and in our online community who have experienced parenting challenges and issues before them as life-saving.

“Access, parking, safety and development potential are the most important factors

in considering the location of our new National Children’s Hospital, and if the Government and planning authorities won’t listen to these objections, then maybe they’ll listen when it hits their pocket and they realise that the greenfield site proposed in Blanchardstown will actually be cheaper and quicker to construct.”

Search is on for Southside’s best volunteersistered with Volunteer Centres and I-VOL (Volunteer Ireland’s national database and smart-phone app), almost 30 per cent say one of the reasons they vol-unteer is to help improve their skills and develop their employ-ment prospects.

“The value of volunteering can never be overlooked but in cur-rent times where unemployment

remains high and the job market has become increasingly com-petitive.

“If you’ve ever attended a sporting event, had fun at a fes-tival or even adopted an animal, chances are you’ve experienced first hand the importance of vol-unteers. We’re calling on mem-bers of the public now to take this opportunity to say thank you

to their local volunteers, and to nominate an outstanding volun-teer they know.”

Anyone can nominate a volun-teer in any of the 10 categories that include Arts, Culture and Media; Animals and Environment and Campaigning and Awareness Raising.

All shortlisted applicants are automatically eligible for the

overall award. Nominations close at midnight on Friday, October 16 and can be made online at www.volunteer.ie

The Christine Buckley Volun-teer of the Year award winner as well as the 10 category win-ners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on Wednesday, December 2 in City Hall in Dublin city centre.

Volunteer Ireland has launched its eighth annual Volunteer Ire-land Awards with a call for nomi-nations.

The Volunteer Ireland Awards are open to volunteers of all ages working in any part of Ireland. There are 10 different award categories, along with the presti-gious Christine Buckley Volunteer of the Year award.

The Volunteer Ireland national awards celebrate volunteering in Ireland. The awards aim to recognise the thousands of peo-

ple across Ireland who give their time to benefit others.

Speaking of the awards, Claire Carroll manager of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown’s Volunteer Centre, said: “Volunteers are one of Ire-land’s most valuable resources. The most recent figures, for 2013, show that over one million people volunteered their time. These vol-unteers clocked up an incredible 230 million hours of volunteering which equates to a value of over €5 billion to the economy.

WOULDN’T it be great if we had a Government that could announce ambitious capital spending plans at the beginning of their term in office rather than in the dying months of

the administration?

Not in Ireland, though. We get five years of Fine Gael and Labour blaming Fianna Fáil for all the country’s ills as they duly proceeded with all the puni-tive austerity measures agreed with the Troika before they came to power.

We’ve all had our pockets picked thanks to USC, property tax and water charges.

Homeless people are dying on the streets while families are forced to live in emergency accommodation.

Those reliant on the private rental sector face continued insecurity and uncertainty.

Frontline staff in our A&E depart-ments are completely overwhelmed by the demands placed on them on a daily

basis as patients languish on trolleys in hospital corridors.

But like a gambler let loose on a stag night in Vegas, the Government sud-denly has a €27 billion wad of cash that it needs to blow.

Most areas previously neglected by the State - from housing and policing to health and transport - will benefit from their munificence.

Naturally there are terms and condi-tions attached. The capital plan is of course predicated on the coalition being re-elected if it’s to continue on its spending spree.

It won’t happen overnight, such is

the scale of their ambition. One of my colleagues, now aged in his early 50s, ruefully remarked that he’ll be close to availing of the free travel scheme by the time Metro North passes by his door.

Even the much heralded announce-ment of the extension of the DART to Balbriggan could turn out to be some-thing of a damp squib.

There is already a reasonably ef-ficient commuter service operating on this line that will no doubt have to be downgraded when the line is electrified between now and 2022. Wouldn’t it just be cheaper to invest in more rolling stock and improve the service we have?

Whoever forms the next Government, it would be refreshing if they could set out their stall as early as possible. That way, we will be able to effectively judge them on their record when they stand for re-election in five years’ time.

In fairness, Ireland may well be better positioned to invest in a capital spending programme now than it was in 2011.

Perhaps I am being over cynical in suggesting that last week’s big announcement was simply a blatant example of electioneering at its finest.

I would genuinely love to be proven wrong.

The plan to extend the DART service could turn out to be a damp squib. FILE PHOTO▪

of affordable housing and afford-able rents. We are suffering a housing emergency that is simply not being taken seriously by this Government.

Meanwhile, Mary Hanafin has promised to bring her experience to the campaign and, if elected, to talks on the formation of the next government.

“It is my privilege to contest the upcoming election for Fianna Fáil in Dún Laoghaire,” she said. “The outcome of the election can-not be predicted. I hope to bring my extensive experience to bear in the formation of party policy, and if elected to the multi-party discussions that are likely to take place after polling day.

“If elected, these are the prior-ities that I would like to address in the next Dáil. I look forward to working with Cormac Devlin to ensure that these issues are at the forefront of the election cam-paign in Dún Laoghaire.”

Speaking about the candidates, the chairman of the National Con-

stituencies Committee, Michael Moynihan TD, stated: “With Cor-mac Devlin and Mary Hanafin, Fianna Fáil now has an extremely strong ticket in Dun Laoghaire.

“Both candidates have an ex-cellent record of public service in

communities across this constitu-ency.

“Working together, Cormac and Mary will maximise the party’s vote in order to retake a Fianna Fáil seat in this important Dublin constituency.”

Devlin and Hanafin both outline election priorities

Dún Laoghaire constituency,” he added. “We are now in a situa-tion where many highly qualified working parents are being forced to give up work because they can’t afford childcare for their children.

“This is extremely regres-sive; it places an unreasonable burden on mothers in particular and it costs the State far more in the long-run. I am proposing the immediate introduction of a tax credit for childcare to ease the costs on working parents.”

Cllr Devlin claimed that house-holders across the constituency were being penalised by a deeply inequitable property tax regime and pointed out that there has been a 64 per cent surge in so-cial housing waiting lists in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown in just two years.

“There are currently 5,600 families and individuals on social housing waiting lists in this local authority,” he argued. “Much of the increase is down to the lack

Cllr Cormac Devlin was se-lected by Fianna Fáil members to contest the election in Dun Laoghaire at a party convention at the Fitzpatrick Killiney Castle Hotel last week.

Cllr Devlin, who is currently serving his third successive term on Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, having been first elected as the youngest ever member of the council in 2004, will run with former minister Mary Hanafin who was added to the ticket by Fianna Fáil’s Nation-al Constituencies Committee.

The Fianna Fáil whip on the council, chairman of Council’s Environment, Climate Change & Energy Policy Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Southside Partnership, Cllr Devlin lives in Dún Laoghaire with his wife Jen-

nifer and their three young chil-dren.

In a statement, he said child-care, the housing crisis and crime were the key priorities for his election campaign.

“Communities in this constitu-ency have taken far more than their fair share of cuts to local services as well as a raft of ad-ditional costs and taxes that are only set to increase,” he said. “While the Government praises itself for economic recovery, there has been absolutely no re-lief for the ordinary hardworking families who are just about keep-ing their heads above water.

“Ireland now has by far the highest childcare costs in Eu-rope, exceeding mortgage repay-ments as the largest household bill for many families across the

Local Girl Guide leaders to help young women on life Journey

erything from cultural diver-sity, healthy mind and disability awareness to independent living skills, voting, science investigator and community action.

Niamh Briggs, Captain of the Ireland Women’s Rugby Team and a former member of St Au-gustine’s Guide Unit in Dungar-van, also attended launch of the Journey Programme.

“Being a part of the Guiding movement gave me huge self-es-teem,” she said.

“It helped me make friends and to take part in so many dif-ferent activities and provided me with an outlet to express myself while learning so many life skills.

“My time in the Guides was hugely enjoyable.”

Irish Girl Guides welcomes girls from age 5+ and volunteer leaders from age 18+. See www.irishgirlguides.ie

Launching the Journey Pro-gramme, Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan said it was an “impressive” programme that encompassed an outstand-ing range of activities, challenges and badges.

“Today’s Girl Guides are set to become the trailblazers of to-morrow, no matter what paths in life they choose to pursue,” she said. “The programme, which is based on 15 national outcomes, will allow each girl to achieve her best and to develop to her full potential.”

Senator Jillian van Turnhout, who is IGG District Commissioner in South Dublin and former Chief Commissioner, headed up the team that devised the Journey Programme.

Speaking at the launch, she said the new activities and chal-lenges were designed to be pro-gressive so that each girl would continue to learn and develop as she undertook her Guiding jour-ney.

“It is all about challenging each member of Irish Girl Guides, whether a girl or an adult, to do their very best to achieve their full potential,” she said.

“We know from studies that women in particular tend to down-play their self-esteem and their abilities and competencies. What the Journey Programme will do is build the girls’ skills, their knowledge, their resilience, their emotional well-being and leadership skills.

“They will be helped to de-velop their own identity, and en-

couraged to take part in physical activity, team-building and prob-lem-solving activities.

“They will learn how to speak out on issues that concern them and to inspire others to take ac-tion too. All of these skills are es-sential for modern living.”

IGG Chief Commissioner Helen Concannon said the new programme was built on the strong foundations of previous IGG programmes and provided a clear map for leaders to help girls along their Guiding journey. “Girls can join IGG at any time, so the Journey Programme is de-signed to meet the needs of both the girls who start at the age of five as well as those who jump on board along the way,” she said.

The Journey Programme in-cludes 119 interest badges that girls can earn. Topics covered are wide-ranging, including ev-

running and I warmly congratu-late the Boards of Management and the many people – includ-ing my colleague Minister Jan O’Sullivan – who have helped turn this dream into reality.”

The new St Colmcille’s school is one of nine major educational in-vestments made in Dublin South since the Government came to of-fice in March 2011.

Minister White said the Govern-ment’s five year schools’ invest-ment programme had seen more than €2 billion spent on school building projects, including a €57 million for replacing prefab units and new classroom accommoda-tion for more than 75,000 pupils across the country.

St Colmcille’s was officially opened by the minister following a blessing ceremony conducted by Eamonn Walsh, Auxiliary Bish-op of Dublin.

The event was also addressed by Lynn Corcoran, Principal of the Senior School, and John Boyle, Principal of the Junior School.

Special guests at the event in-cluded members of the Boards of Management, officials of the De-partment of Education and Skills,

The state-of-the-art school serves 1,600 pupils and employs 80 teachers, 23 special needs as-sistants and 11 ancillary staff.

With 58 classrooms, the school is the product of a €14 million Government investment and is Ireland’s largest primary school boasting 12 teaching support rooms, four meeting rooms, two IT rooms, two roof gardens, and two canteens.

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to see this magnificent project reach fruition, and to be invited to officially open St Colm-cille’s.

“This initiative has been a pri-ority for me and for the entire community throughout my time as a public representative in Dub-lin South. It really is fantastic to see this wonderful school up and

public representatives, members of the design and construction teams, and parents representing each of the school’s 55 classes.

Meanwhile, Deputy Olivia Mitchell (FG) has welcomed con-firmation that a permanent school building for Stepaside Educate To-gether national school has finally been acquired.

Speaking during a Dáil topi-cal issue debate, Deputy Mitchell raised the absence of permanent sites for four schools that are planned for Dublin South.

“Stepaside Educate Together national school is currently lo-cated in its second temporary lo-cation in the constituency since it was opened in 2011,” she said.

“Confirmation by the Minister for Education that a permanent site has finally been acquired is great news for the school’s pupils and staff and will meet the needs of the many young families in the area.

“Management will be informed shortly about the location of the school’s new site,” she added.

“I have asked the Minister for Education to ensure there is a sense of urgency about acquiring a site and making an announce-ment in that regard so families can plan now where their children will go to school for the next six years.”

Guinness Storehouse scoops travel industry ‘Oscar’ in awardsTHE Guinness Storehouse has been named ‘Europe’s leading tourist attraction’ in the pres-tigious World Travel Awards.

Hailed as ‘the Oscars of the travel industry,’ and decided by an open vote, the award was presented to the Guinness Store-house at the European Gala Cer-emony in Forte Village, Sardinia which was attended by hundreds of tourism and hospitality leaders from across the world.

Shortlisted alongside some of Europe’s most historic and rec-ognisable attractions including the Acropolis, Athens; Bucking-ham Palace, La Sagrada Familia and the Roman Colosseum, it was Ireland’s top tourist spot that won the largest public vote.

Now in its 22nd year, the World Travel Awards is widely acknowl-edged across the globe as the ul-timate travel accolade.

Speaking at the European Ga-la Awards Ceremony, Paul Carty, Managing Director, GuinnessStorehouse said: “Today is a very proud day for the Guinness Store-house team.

“We were honoured to have

been shortlisted amongst such iconic attractions but to be voted by the public as ‘Europe’s leading tourist attraction’ goes beyond anything we could have imag-ined.

“We wish to claim this as a victory for Irish tourism. One in every two holidaymakers to Dublin visits the Guinness Store-house and we are very aware and very proud of our position at the front line of the warm Irish welcome. This award is a great acknowledgement of the team’s

dedication to providing an unfor-gettable, world-class visitor expe-rience.”

He added: “I would like to whole heartedly thank all of the Guinness Storehouse fans from Ireland and around the world who voted. We are delighted tobe recognised as Europe’s Lead-ing tourist attraction at the pres-tigious World Travel Awards and could not have achieved it without their support. We look forward to celebrating our win with our visi-tors over the coming days.”

Ireland has been selected as the venue for the 2016 Laser Ra-dial Youth World Championships and the 2016 Laser Radial Men’s World Championships that will bring hundreds of competitors to the seaside town.

The two events will be hosted from July 23 to 30 by the RSGYC, International Laser Class Associa-tion (ILCA) and the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company.

The announcement was made by Jeff Martin, Executive Secre-tary of the World Council of the ILCA and London 2012 Race Of-ficer.

“Our decision to select Ireland, and Dun Laoghaire in particular, over other competing interna-tional destinations stemmed from the professional approach shown by both organisers and town, combined with the superb venue that has a reputation for consist-

ently delivering top class sailing events,” Mr Martin said.

“These events, in particular, will provide an important impetus to the continuing development of youth sailing in Ireland.

“The awarding of World Cham-pionships is taken very seriously by the International Laser Class Association, and Dun Laoghaire should be proud to be following on the heels of Canada in 2015 and Poland in 2014 to host this prestigious event.”

Justin McKenna, Commodore of RSGYC, said they were looking forward to welcoming the com-petitors, their families and sup-port teams to Dun Laoghaire next summer.

“We will be working closely with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company, the local busi-ness community and sponsors to

Minister hopes locals will join in Pink WalkTHE Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald has extended an invite to men, women and children to take part in the Lucan Pink Walk in aid of the Marie Keating Foundation in Griffeen Valley Park at 11am on Saturday, October 17.

Minister Fitzgerald said it was a perfect event for people of all ages and levels of fitness that offered a great fun day out for all the family.

“Most importantly, we will be raising funds for the Marie Keating Foundation and their breast cancer services and pro-grammes,” the minister said. “I have been a consistent advocate and campaigner on matters relating to breast cancer.

“I have worked for improved awareness and education services which are critical in supporting early detection. I have been a vo-cal and passionate supporter of the extension of Breast Check to women between 65- 69 years of age since my days in the Seanad and when I was elected to represent Dublin Mid-West in 2011, I succeeded in getting a commitment in the Programme for Govern-ment for the extension of BreastCheck

“In Budget 2015, we have now followed through on that com-mitment, providing funding for the extension and I look forward to seeing this BreastCheck extension to 65- 69 years olds in coming months.”

Linda Keating, Director of Fundraising of the Marie Keating Foundation, said her mother had died from the most curable form of breast cancer at just 51 years of age because she was too scared to go to the doctor.

“The Marie Keating Foundation is all about making cancer less frightening by enlightening so I hope that as many of you as pos-sible will join us on October 17 for the Lucan Pink Walk so that we can raise funds for our cancer awareness and programmes,” she said

Victims of domestic violence are left reeling as refuge faces closureNeil Fetherstonhaugh

The housing charity, Respond!, issued a warning last week that it cannot continue to fund the Cuan Álainn homeless refuge for wom-en and children fleeing domestic violence.

According to Ned Brennan, chief executive officer, Respond! has bank-rolled the refuge in Tal-laght for the past three and half years without any financial sup-port from the State.

“We cannot continue to fully subvent this service, 100 per cent from our own resources, without any State assistance due to the cost burden,” he stated. “We have come to the regrettable decision to close the service in an orderly manner before the end of the

year.” Catering for nine families, Cuan

Álainn has supported and housed 71 women and 96 children to date over the last three and a half years at a cost of €350,000 per annum. The charity undertook in 2012 to fund this service for three years but says it can no longer afford to do so and is therefore confronted with the unavoidable decision to close Cuan Álainn.

It is now feared that without this service, women and children may now have to return home to an abusive environment or be forced to enter homelessness. Alterna-tive arrangements are currently underway to arrange accommoda-tion for the women and children concerned, Mr Brennan added.

“The State must take its re-

sponsibility seriously and fund services for some of the most vul-nerable members of our society,” he said.

The charity has now challenged the Government to make adequate financial provision for the funding of the Cuan Álainn service “which provides a safe haven for some of the most vulnerable and broken women in our society”.

“Respond! asks both Govern-ment departments involved to fund this valuable service, as the cost to the State to provide al-ternatives will, in fact, be more costly,” Mr Brennan stated.

The Department of Children and Youth Affairs said they had met with Respond! at their re-quest to discuss the current situ-ation in Cuan Álainn.

“The department has since sought additional information from Respond!, including in rela-tion to the housing association’s

financial wellbeing,” a spokesper-son stated. “The most recent in-formation provided indicates that Respond!, which is made up of two companies, remains in good financial health.

“The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs hopes that the mat-ter can be satisfactorily resolved, by allowing sufficient time for all avenues to be explored by the relevant parties. This will need to include discussion with other parties, including the Depart-ment of Environment, Community and Local Government as it would appear that these families have pressing housing needs.”

Last week the issue was raised in the Dáil by Deputy Seán Crowe with Environment Minister Alan Kelly during a Sinn Féin motion on homelessness and housing.

“As I stand here tonight a wom-en’s refuge for victims of domestic violence in Cuan Álainn Tallaght is

set to be closed on December 18,” Deputy Crowe said.

“Cuan Álainn serves a huge catchment area where the need is great and unfortunately growing.

“I am calling on all the Govern-ment departments involved to fund this valuable service as the cost to the State to provide al-ternatives will in the long run be more costly. We need to be open-ing more of these vital support centres, not closing them.”

Deputy Eamonn Maloney (Lab) described the situation as “ disas-trous”.

“Since 2012 Cuan Àlainn has provided a very valuable service in Tallaght for women and chil-

dren who are victims of all types of domestic violence and abuse,” he said. “ In that time they have pro-vided a safe haven for 71 mothers and 86 children who were forced to leave their own homes through no fault of their own.

“We cannot underestimate the value that is provided by Cuan Àlainn to the community. The tax-payer has a duty to organisations such as Respond! which provide safe havens in the community and are in the frontline of the defence of vulnerable women and children from violence and abuse. The vio-lence and abuse experienced by women in all communities is no respecter of class or status.”

Horse rider jumps back in the saddle after spinal scare

perate and confused and I just wanted some direction.”

Scoliosis causes the spine to excessively curve sideways. The condition affects more than four per cent of the population and if left untreated can lead to fatal heart and lung problems.

The diagnosis hit Carly excep-tionally hard. She did not know

what was happening and was worried that she would have to give up her hobbies because of her deformity.

When Carly received a referral and saw the orthopaedic special-ist the family was told that her only option would be to have a 10-hour operation to fuse the spine from top to bottom.

In a desperate last attempt to find a miracle, Carly and her fam-ily started to search the Internet for alternative treatments. It was around this time that she discov-ered Scoliosis SOS.

Founded and run by Erika Maude, who has scoliosis herself, the clinic opened over nine years ago and has since brought relief to hundreds of sufferers.

Carly was booked onto a treat-ment course and her whole fam-ily were overwhelmed with the results that she achieved.

Carly said: “I was totally trau-matised when I was diagnosed with scoliosis. It felt like my

Carly Little, from Herbert Street in the city centre, was a normal teenage girl right up until the age of 14, when she was diag-nosed with a severe curve in her spine and told that she needed an operation to save her mobility.

Carly was passionate about horses and had always loved spending her time riding, how-ever, the diagnosis shattered her dreams and left her in excruciat-ing pain. The condition also left her facing major spinal fusion surgery until she discovered an exercise routine which has dras-tically changed her prognosis.

Carly had always been very fit and active throughout her life and she was passionate about horses, but she started getting tired far quicker than normal and was complaining of aches and pains

in her back. Riding teachers had noticed her lack of energy and were worried that something se-rious was going on.

Carly’s mother made an emer-gency appointment to see the family GP who immediately gave them a devastating diagnosis. Carly was told that she had a condition called scoliosis, which means curvature of the spine.

Carly said: “Horses have al-ways been everything to me but posture and being able to hold yourself properly is so impor-tant. If you cannot sit straight on a horse there is no way you could ever compete and there is no way I would ever be recognised in the professional sense. I felt like all my opportunities and all the pos-sibilities of the future had been torn away from me. I was des-

THE Multi-Platinum and multi-million selling artist Josh Gro-ban has confirmed that he will conclude the European leg of his ‘Stages’ our with a Dublin date at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on May 29.

‘Stages’ is Groban’s seventh studio album and his highest charting album to date in Ire-land, coming in at No 2 in the Irish charts. It is his first UK No 1 album.

Renowned for his show-steal-ing guest appearances on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Groban marked the album’s UK release with a performance and inter-view on The One Show which was

followed by appear-ances on The Paul O’Grady Show, Loose Women and Sunday Night At The Palladium.

‘Stages’ is a collection of some of the greatest musical theatre songs of all time, which Groban describes as “gorgeously ar-ranged songs that have stood the

test of time,” and which he was drawn to because of their com-bination of “incredible melody with an incredible story”.

Recorded with producers Hum-berto Gatica and Bernie Herms in both Los Angeles and London’s Abbey Road (with a 75-piece or-

chestra), ‘Stages’ features songs from musicals including Les Mi-sérables (‘Bring Him Home’); Car-ousel (‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’); Into the Woods (‘Children Will Listen’); Phantom of the Opera (‘All I Ask of You’) and The Wizard of Oz (‘Over the Rainbow’).

‘Stages’ features three duets: Kelly Clarkson is featured on ‘All I Ask of You’ (“she can, quite simply, do anything”); Audra Mc-Donald sings on ‘If I Loved You’ (“in my head I heard her on this and to sing it in the room with her was a dream come true”); and trumpeter Chris Botti plays on ‘Old Devil Moon’ (“he plays with such control and expres-siveness”).

I’ll be sad to see Downton Abbey come to an end.The hit TV series has returned to our screens for its sixth and final season.Apparently when filming ended the cast and crew were in tears.

X Factor winner Ben Haenow’s teaming up with Kelly Clarkson on his next single. He confirmed the song called Second Hand Heart, will be out early next month. Meanwhile, Ben’s debut self-titled album will be released on November 13.I actually forgot who won last year!

Sam Smith’s James Bond theme song ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ may have divided opinion, but he can definitely count on Alesha Dixon as a fan. The song’s on course to become the first 007 track to reach num-ber one in the charts. Alesha told Dublin’s Q102 that she thinks the track’s taken Bond songs to another level.Am I the only one that thinks it sounds like your average Bond tune?

Ali, as well as Astro and Micky Virtue are back on top of the game with this new squad and they promise a special night out for all lovers of reggae as they play all their hits as well as their covers of the songs that inspired them.

Formed in 1978 in Birming-ham, the band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international suc-cess. They have been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, and in 1984 were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group.

One of the world’s best-sell-ing music artists, UB40 have sold over 70 million records.

The band members began as friends who knew each other from various schools across Bir-mingham. The name UB40 was selected in reference to the sign-ing-on document issued to people claiming unemployment benefit from the UK government’s De-partment of Employment at the time of the band’s formation.

The designation UB40 stood for Unemployment Benefit, Form

40. The UB40 no longer exists, although the term is still well understood to refer to unemploy-ment claims in the UK.

The ethnic makeup of the band’s original line-up was di-verse, with musicians of English, Scottish, Irish, Yemeni and Ja-maican parentage.

The band’s line-up remained unchanged for 30 years, from its formation in 1978 until Janu-

ary 2008, when front man Ali Campbell left the band, followed shortly thereafter by keyboardist Mickey Virtue.

Another member, Astro, re-mained with the band until No-vember 2013, when he departed the original line up to team up with Campbell and Virtue in a new version of UB40.

their fundamental character as portraits. The juxtaposition of these large-scale images with works from the collection will explore the nature of portraiture across geographical, temporal and socio-economic lines. An accompanying catalogue, edited by Dr Brendan Rooney, curator of the show, will be available from the Gallery Shop. Crystal is back to full health after weight loss planCrystal Masterson, a mum of one from Sandyford, decided after another failed ‘diet’ attempt to join Slimming World.

Now 22lbs lighter and back to full health, it was the best deci-sion she has ever made.

“I had been on and off diets since my teens,” she says. “With each fail the weight piled straight back on and the feeling of failure increased.

“Not only was I spending end-less money on herbal remedies, diet magazines and wasted gym memberships, I was sinking low-er and lower into depression and feeling hopeless.”

When the credit controller joined her local Slimming World group she was quite apprehen-sive at the start.

“My consultant Rachel was so patient and honest, explaining the food plan to me as it really was too generous to be called a diet,” says Crystal.

Still able to cook all her favour-ites such as curry, spaghetti bolo-gnaise and chips with steak, Crys-tal says she now has a passion for creating new dishes which her

family and friends all enjoy. “The big factor for me was not

having to cook separate meals for my family and feel different,” she says.

“I couldn’t believe the amount of normal food that you could eat and still lose weight. It was the first time I heard the motto: ‘Don’t eat less, just eat properly’.

“Before starting group I had been attending physiotherapy for my knees and was also on medi-cation for stomach ulcers which I no longer suffer from.

“With the increase of energy from food optimising, I have now

started going swimming which I would never have felt comfort-able doing before.

“Slimming world has become my best friend and I look for-ward to meeting my group every week to cheer each other on and swap ideas.

Public dementia lecture series at St Joseph’s CentreA FREE series of public lectures on the theme of ‘Dementia Matters’ is taking place at St Joseph’s Centre, Shankill.

St Joseph’s Centre is commit-ted to the compassionate care of people with dementia and their families, providing a home from home for people living with the condition. Their vision is to lead the way in best practice and ex-cellence in dementia care in Ire-land.

Dementia is indiscriminate in its onset and it affects people from all walks of life and from every neighbourhood. Each per-son with dementia may be a par-ent, a husband or wife, an aunt or uncle, a sister or brother and many are grandparents. They may have been doctors or join-ers, lawyers or shopkeepers, dressmakers or architects. At St Joseph’s Centre they make sure these identities are cherished, respected and remembered.

They recognise that the effects of dementia on families can often be devastating and overwhelm-ing and navigation of what serv-ices and supports are available can be difficult. They want to share their knowledge with those living in the community.

Are you caring for someone

with dementia? Are you or some-one in your family experiencing symptoms of dementia? Would you like to help a friend or rela-tive with dementia? The public lecture series reaches out to the loved ones and carers of people living with dementia in the com-munity. All are welcome to come along to the free lectures at St Joseph’s Centre, Shankill, dur-ing October, for practical advice and information about caring for someone with dementia.

On Wednesday, October 7, ‘De-mentia Care: Early Diagnosis’ will be given by Dr Ruth Loane, clini-cal psychiatrist, St John of God Hospital, at 7.30pm.

On Wednesday, October 14, ‘Caring for Someone at Home with Dementia - Practical Advice’ - will be given by Helen Leavy, Ho-meInstead, at 7.30pm.

On Wednesday, October 21, ‘Dementia Care: The Pursuit of Happiness and Wellbeing’, will offer an opportunity to meet in-dividually with all the community supports to assist you in this pur-suit.

Sightsavers announces arty competition for schoolkidsBUDDING young artists across Dublin are being urged to enter the 2016 Sightsavers Junior Painter of the Year competition.

The theme for this year’s com-petiton is ‘Imagine 2030’.

A lot can change in 15 years so Sightstavers are inviting primary school students to be inspired and create an artwork that shows how they want the world they live in to look in the year 2030.

Student artists have a chance to win appropriately arty prizes, not just for themselves but for their classmates too, and sub-stantial cash prizes of €200, €300 and €1,000 for their schools.

Artist and director of Arts & Disability Ireland, Padraig Naugh-

ton, returns to judge the popular competition and is joined this year by a new judge - artist and educator Deirdre Rogers.

Entry packs have been sent to primary schools nationwide which include interactive activi-ties and lesson plans for teachers that highlight how entering the competition ties in with the pri-mary school curriculum.

Over 90 per cent of blind chil-dren in developing countries re-ceive no schooling.

Alongside restoring sight and preventing avoidable blindness, a key focus of Sightsavers is to ensure that children who are liv-ing with visual impairment can receive an education in order for them to live their lives as inde-pendently as sighted people.

Sightsavers Ireland chief ex-ecutive, Michael Marren, said: “We are looking forward to see-ing all of the fantastic creations this year in the Junior Painter of the Year Awards 2016.

“Every year Sightsavers aims to educate and inform primary school children of the value of sight and the impact blindness has on the education of children all over the world.

“There are 1.4 million children

worldwide living with blindness and 12 million visually impaired.”

Mr Marren added: “We hope this competition raises aware-ness of such issues and the work Sightsavers does in the develop-ing world to combat visual im-pairment.”

Last year’s national winner

was Katie O’Brien (9) from Holy Family Senior National School, Swords, She won the top award for her wonderful creation, ‘I Want You To See Books Fly’.

QUEStION:Is there an income threshold one must not exceed in order to be eligible for social housing and if so, is there a needs assessment?

ANSWER:Yes. To be regarded as eligible

for social housing you must satisfy the income criteria. You must also show that you do not have suitable alternative accommodation.

The Department of the Envi-ronment, Community and Local Government has published de-tailed guidance on how household income is to be assessed by local authorities.

There are three maximum in-

come thresholds that apply to different housing authorities. The Department has published a table showing these figures. You should contact your local authority or Citi-zens’ Information Service to check them.

You will be regarded as hav-ing alternative accommodation if a member of the household has property that the household could reasonably be expected to live in.

This includes property that is being rented out – (under the Resi-dential Tenancies Act 2004 you can terminate the tenancy if the household needs the property to live in.)

When deciding whether your

household is in need of social hous-ing the housing authority must consider the following questions.

•Is it an institution, emergency accommodation or hostel?

•Is it overcrowded and is it fit for human habitation?

•Does it meet the accommoda-tion requirements of a household member with a disability?

•If it is shared with another household, have you a reasonable requirement for separate accom-modation?

•Is it unsuitable for your house-hold, having regard to particular household circumstances, or ex-ceptional medical or compassion-ate grounds?

The rights of au pairsQUEStIONI am thinking of getting an au pair to live with us and to look after the children as I am go-ing back to full-time work next month. What are the rules about employing au pairs?

ANSWERThere is no legal definition of

or regulatory framework in re-lation to au pairs. However, it is generally understood to be an arrangement between host fami-lies and foreign students who come to a country with a view to learning the language and get-ting a better understanding of the culture of that country.

Simply using the term au pair to describe an arrangement be-tween consenting parties does not mean that the person is not an employee.

If a person is carrying out a duty for another person in ex-change for payment, a contrac-tual relationship may exist.

Contract law and employment legislation are generally used to establish whether or not a per-

son is an employee. If you employ someone to live

in your house and look after your children while you are working full-time, they would be consid-ered a domestic worker.

Domestic workers have vari-ous employment rights. These include the right to a written contract of employment, a mini-mum wage, rest periods and breaks, annual leave and public

holidays. The maximum hours of work

that an employee can work in a week is 48 hours on average.

The employer must keep a record of how many hours a do-mestic worker is employed.

Domestic workers pay tax, PRSI and the Universal Social Charge and it is the responsibil-ity of the employer to deduct this from the worker’s wages and also to pay the employer’s PRSI con-tribution on their behalf.

A leaflet on the employment rights of domestic workers (pdf) is available on workplacerela-tions.ie.

Moving house with your dogCorina Fitzsimons

MOVING house can be stress-ful for everyone involved, in-cluding your dog.

As well as coping with all of the upheaval during the move, it’ll take weeks for him to get used to a new territory and strange smells in the new house. Although you’ll be very busy with little time, please bear in mind the following to help make it easier and safer for him. If your dog is staying with you during the move then confine him to one secure room, so that escape and in-jury cannot occur to him while people are going in and out of the house.

Leave him in a quiet area with his familiar, unwashed bed and possessions. Make sure he has an ID tag on his collar with

your up-to-date contact details on it.

Also make sure that he is safely secured in the car or vehicle that he is to be trans-ported in to the new house with a dog guard, travel crate or car harness on the back seat.

If it is a long journey, make sure that he gets regular toilet and water breaks.

In the new home check your boundary fencing to make sure

DOGs TrusT CaNINe COluMN

that it is secure, of sufficient height and ‘hole-free’ before letting your dog run free in the garden. If your dog is able to escape then take him out on a lead until you are able to do the necessary improvements.

Try to unpack the essentials before introducing your dog to the new house so that he can see familiar items within the un-familiar house. If possible, place furniture and items in similar

places to those in the old house. Be patient with your dog in the new home and make allowances for ‘accidents’ on the carpet if they should happen. Don’t make a fuss, don’t punish your dog or draw his attention to accidents, as this may make the problem worse.

Quietly pick up the mess and clean the area with a biological solution or special cleaner from the vets or pet shop to properly remove the smell. Once your dog has settled in they should stop.

Always praise him when he goes to toilet in the correct place (outside!) so that he knows where to go. Make sure that you stick to your usual routines, as this will help him to settle - feed and walk him at the usual times.

Don’t give him more or less attention than he is used to having from you as this may cause him to become anxious or over dependent on you and lead to behaviour problems.

It was the first event from the EU Dog & Cat Alliance, which is particularly concerned in relation to commercial practices in animal welfare for domestic pets.

Throughout the day, which took place on September 22, members of the Alliance had in-depth meetings with the MEPs.

Currently, national legislation varies greatly across EU member states, with strict legislation in some countries and little at all in others. The situation can have serious consequences for ani-mal welfare, but also for animal health, human health, consumer protection and the functioning of the internal market.

There are an estimated 61 mil-lion owned dogs and 66 million owned cats in the EU, but there is very little EU legislation to pro-tect their welfare.

Mark Beazley, executive direc-tor with Dublin based Dogs Trust, and Dr Andrew Kelly, CEO of the ISPCA, both attended the event from Ireland. “We were delighted to attend and represent Ireland in the European Parliament,” said Mr Beazley. “It was extreme-ly encouraging to see so many MEPs from all across the EU join us to collectively call for EU ac-tion to better protect the welfare of dogs and cats.”

Coast has just launched its new Autumn Winter 2015 collection. The pieces in the new collection are extremely on trend, for example this gorgeous Clena Fringe top is all over the catwalks for this season and is one of my favourite in the collection. It can be styled for both a casual or dressy look, ensuring you get value for money with multiple wears. This top can be paired with these beautiful fitted Fitzroy lace trousers for an elegant and sophisticated look. The style and comfort of these trousers make them the ultimate Star Buy and the lace detail adds that little bit of extra glamour. For me you can’t go wrong with an all black outfit but to add a little pop of colour I paired the look with a gorgeous cream Ellie envelope clutch bag from the new collection also. See in-store or online at www.coast-stores.com

Over the years I’ve heard so much about Great Lengths Hair Extensions, as so many celebrities have them and they look fantastic but I was always afraid to take the plunge. I met with Cathriona Rohan, hairdresser to the stars and she totally put my mind at ease. She talked me through the process and what makes Great Lengths different to its competitors. The hair is 100 per cent human hair and is donated from ladies in India. The hair is tied in a ponytail which keeps all hair in same direction while it is being transported. This is really important as the cuticles are all in the same direction, reducing tangling and making sure it keeps its shine. The Great Lengths are attached to hair with keratin bonds, and these bonds are the kindest to hair and cause no damage as our own hair is made up of keratin. Great Lengths normally last between 4-6 months and I was delighted with the results. For further information see www.cathrionashairsalon.com.

With winter approaching, the wind, cold temperatures and even heavy clothing can intensify the skin’s level of dryness, leaving it feeling tight and uncomfortable. Those who suffer from dry skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, may find that it tends to get worse during the winter. The hydration of the skin depends on how water is held in the outer layer of the skin. Maintaining this hydration is a key part of enabling the skin to act as a protective barrier against the environment. Moisturisers or emollients help to restore the hydration of the outer layer of skin, and act as a protective coating. Many people benefit from a moisturiser with a richer consistency during the winter months. Hydraphase UV Intense Riche contains Hyaluronic Acid Fragments to lock in water and provide ultra long-lasting hydration. It’s also important to remember to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays. Hydraphase UV Intense Riche’s filtering system helps protect skin against damages caused by daily exposure to UVA & UVB rays. Available from selected pharmacies nationwide.

SEASONED travellers know the best place to go for local info is to the concierge at your hotel.

After all, it’s his (or her) job to point guests in the right direction when it comes to dining, sightseeing and shopping so generally there’s a wealth of local knowledge waiting to be tapped into.

With this in mind, we had a few words with the head concierge at Corus Hotel, Hyde Park, London, who told us why the English capital should be top of your list for a city break.

“London really is the perfect place to visit for a city break,” he says.

“It’s not so big as to be completely overwhelming for a first time visit, yet there is so much going on you would never run out of things to do, even on your 100th visit.

“The city is perfect for families, romantic breaks, business trips, cultural pilgrimages, or for those simply looking to indulge in London’s unrivalled food, drink and nightlife scene.”

Here are his top five recommendations and personal tips on how to make the most of London.

1. ThE grEEN SpAcESThe parks are perhaps one of the

city’s best-loved spaces by Londoners themselves. Venture into Richmond Park for a taste of the English countryside, or Hampstead Heath with its public swimming lake and amazing views.

We are lucky enough to be situated just across the road from Hyde Park, which is the largest of the royal parks in London, and home to a number of famous landmarks including the Serpentine Lake, Speakers’ Corner and the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain.

Hyde Park also offers various recreational activities including open water swimming, boating, cycling, tennis and horse riding, and hosts events ranging from Gay Pride to rock concerts and Proms in the Park.

2. ShOppiNgShopping in London is like nowhere

else in the world, from the iconic shopping streets of Oxford Circus and Bond Street, to the plush boutiques of Knightsbridge and world-famous department stores Harrods and Selfridges. If we have guests who have already experienced all of that, I usually recommend that they visit smaller markets like Maltby Street Market or Broadway

3. ENTErTAiNmENTIf New York is the city that never sleeps,

then London can’t be far behind! There is always so much going on.

If sightseeing is your bag, the Houses of Parliament is commemorating 800 years since the signing of Magna Carter in 1215 – so now is the perfect time to book an audio or guided tour with afternoon Tea.

For art lovers, the National Portrait Gallery is currently home to an extraordinary Audrey Hepburn exhibition, celebrating one of Britain’s most iconic film stars.

4. FOOD, gLOriOUS FOODLondon is home to a dizzying array

of amazing restaurants, from Michelin star meccas to tiny artisan coffee shops producing life-changing cakes.

A good way to experience more than just one of them at a time is to go to one of the city’s now iconic street food markets. The hip Street Feast is located in Lewisham, Dalston and Shoreditch, or Kerb in Kings Cross is very good with hundreds of tasty food stalls

offering everything from Vietnamese buns to pulled pork and BBQ ribs.

5. ThE WEirD AND WONDErFULForget Scandi cool or Parisian chic.

Visiting London is all about experiencing the wonderfully bizarre eccentricity of modern Britain.

Pay a visit to Camden Lock to see punks, live music and everything in between. East London for themed cafes – cat cafe, owl cafe cereal cafe – you name it, we’ve got it.

Get a wet shave, posh afternoon tea or your shoes shined in Mayfair, or simply go and enjoy a pint of beer in a good old English pub – anywhere in the city.

Overlooking the beautiful Hyde Park, the largest of the Royal Parks in London, Corus Hotel Hyde Park is a grand white 200 year old listed Georgian building, perfectly situated for guests looking to explore London.

The four-star hideaway is close to everything that the West End of London has to offer, from shopping in Oxford Street, Bond Street and Knightsbridge, to museums and art galleries in South Kensington and world famous visitor destinations such as Buckingham Palace. It’s also a short walk from Kensington Palace where the royals, Kate and William reside with their family.

WEEKLY ACROSS DUBLIN

BOOK OF THE WEEK: ‘Penny’ by Alan CoghlanTHIS is the transla-tion of an article as it appeared in an Aus-trian newspaper on October 23, 2010, one day after Alistair’s fifth birthday:

Paris. In La Verriere near Paris, 11 people

jumped out of a window on the second floor because

they believed a naked man to be the Devil.

“Thirteen people were in the apartment when around three o clock, one of them heard their child

scream. The man of African origin, who was completely naked, stood up

to tend to his child – suddenly they all mistook him for the Devil,” an official speaker said. The man was attacked by the other residents with a knife.

It is night there, too. 2010. Alistair

cries for his mother. Jane enters the living room to find her son crouched under the countertop. He is scared the Shadow Man will harm Penny. The window is open. They live on the fourth floor.

Cliff storms in. There is a black cloud above him. He smells of alcohol.

What are you doing?’ shouts Jane, reprimanding him for his menac-ing demeanour and for his carelessness. Max, Alistair’s younger brother, comes through the door bawling. He runs to Jane, giving his father a wide berth, and buries his face in her nightdress. It seems quite apparent who this Shadow Man is.

That might have meant more to Cliff if Penny’s true nature hadn’t finally dawned on him. Rather than being the perfect vision of a six-year-old girl, she is, in fact, a rampant spectre who wants

to lure Alistair and Max through the window to the street below.

What Cliff doesn’t realise in his vow to stop her is that Punch, a vile fiend in league with Penny – the real Shadow Man – is lurk-ing behind.

There’s a lot of pressure on young families. Impositions from the outside world, coming from all ends, work to pull them apart. They have to fight to stick together.

When actual events, like this baffling news report, and their unexplained underlying evil start reflecting the fantastic in ‘Penny’, one cannot help but fear for the lives of the two small kids.

Free Roald Dahl classic tales are free for all the familyMCDONALD’S Ireland is giving away 700,000 Roald Dahl classics to help make reading more affordable and fun for families.

Young people’s TV presenter Emma O’Driscoll was joined by young book lovers at McDon-ald’s Dundrum recently where she took part in a fun reading event as part of the McDonald’s ‘Happy Readers’ initiative.

As part of the Happy Readers campaign, McDonald’s is giving away 700,000 Roald Dahl books with Happy Meals purchased before November 3.

All of the 88 McDonald’s restaurants around Ireland are participating in the six-week initiative.

Emma is supporting Happy Readers by taking part in a series of regional book reading events at McDonald’s res-taurants in Dublin, Cork and Kilkenny.

Commenting at the Dundrum event, Emma said: “I’m de-lighted to be a part of this great initiative by McDonald’s.

“I’m a bit of a bookworm my-self and when I was growing up I was a huge fan of Roald Dahl so it’s very exciting to be in a posi-tion to share these much-loved stories and characters with the next generation.

“It’s great to see all the kids’ excited faces at these fun read-ing events.”

The first principal of the School, situated on the Upper Kilmacud Road, was Sr Frances Keogh. In 1971 the Daughters of Charity left the school and the sisters of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart took over at the invitation of Archbishop Mc Quaid. The name of the School was changed to St Raphaela’s Secondary School in 1977 to mark the canonisation of Saint Raphaela Mary, foundress of the order of Handmaids of the Sacred Heart, in that year. Schools due to hold elections to boards

provide all pupils with the best possible education.

“In order to achieve this ob-jective, boards must have a very clear understanding of their gov-ernance role and responsibilities and must be fully aware of the importance of good communica-tions with the community. This manual will greatly help board members with their role.

“For the first time, this man-ual sets out a mechanism under which schools can elect 12 mem-bers to serve as the boards of management for two schools.

“While such boards will still be required to maintain separate ac-counts and minutes, and to hold separate meetings, this is the first time that these rules make provi-sion for schools to pilot a shared governance arrangement.

“We will arrange for ongoing review of the pilot in consulta-tion with the relevant stakehold-ers...”

Elections are due to take place in schools across the city over the coming weeks for appointments to new boards of management but Minister O’Sullivan praised the thousands of volunteers who have served on boards over the past four years.

New boards of management are due to take up office from December 1.

The board of management structure has been in place for 40 years and each term of of-fice sees thousands of volunteers help with the running and organi-sation of the over 3,100 primary schools in Ireland.

There are generally eight mem-bers per board, two of whom are parent representatives. Member-ship is designed to reflect all the different interests in the school

community (patron, parents, teachers and wider community).

The new Governance Manual launched by Minister O’Sullivan sets out the various rules re-garding the composition and op-eration of boards and provides a helpful overview of their role.

A new element included in this manual is provision to allow schools to operate a ‘shared gov-ernance arrangement’ on a vol-untary and pilot basis during the forthcoming four-year term.

“I would like to thank the vol-unteers who have contributed enormously to the management and operation of our schools,” the minister said.

“I very much recognise and appreciate the commitment they have shown to ensuring that schools are managed so as to

flight and aircraft and my eyes lit up when I found out about the course I’m currently on, espe-cially when I realised the Access Programme could make it pos-sible for me to attend DCU,” said Ryan.

“The in-depth knowledge and on-the-job learning I have experi-enced in my first two years in the course would have been unimagi-nable before I came to DCU.”

DCU pioneered Ireland’s first access route to higher education in 1990, with just six students. Today it provides equal access to education for over 1,000, who come from socio-economically disadvantaged areas, including students from ethnic minorities and the Traveller community.

The Access Service provides financial, academic and personal support to the students, in addi-

tion to managing a range of out-reach programmes designed to connect with 10,000 primary and second-level students in schools with low levels of progression to

university.Outreach programmes include

initiatives designed to improve maths skills and to introduce po-tential students to university life

The programme is the first and largest of its kind in Ireland and enables students from back-grounds of socio-economic disad-vantage to complete a third-level education.

Students and graduates of the programme joined Profes-sor Brian MacCraith, President of DCU, Steve Aiken, CEO of the DCU Educational Trust and the university’s community of sup-porters at the breakfast to mark

the milestone anniversary of the programme.

DCU Business School graduate, Shauna Bonner, from Co Done-gal, who now works as an assis-tant HR manager in Deloitte, and third year Aviation Management student Ryan Graham, from San-dyford, told the audience how the Access Scholarship Programme made it possible for them to pur-sue a university qualification.

through student shadowing and campus visits.

Many of these services are supported by graduates and cor-porate organisations. In addition to providing financial support for current students, they support outreach programmes including the Citi Financing Your Career ini-tiative and the AOL Maths Com-petition, which brought together 300 second-level students in DCU this year to promote the value of maths skills.

Pat Burke, partner at Grant Thornton and graduate of DCU, told attendees at the event that he has provided long-term sup-port for the programme so that young people can continue to ac-cess the opportunities afforded by a DCU education.

CEO of the Educational Trust, Steve Aiken, added: “Our sup-porters provide funding for the programme because it trans-forms the lives of students, their families and their communities.

“When given the opportunity, DCU’s Access students excel in university, with a higher propor-tion of Access students achieving first and second class honours degrees and experiencing a high-er retention rate compared to the general student population.”

DCU’s Access graduates have gone on to work in a variety of professional sectors around the world including David Dowling who graduated with a BSc in Bio-technology in 2005 and is now a research fellow at Harvard Medi-cal School and a Project Man-ager in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Boston Children’s Hospital. Countdown begins for Maths Week

maths.“We’re delighted to celebrate

the 10th annual Maths Week and to see this festival growing to the largest in the world,” he said.

“It’s a true partnership of peo-ple working together for a com-mon aim - a very important aim to promote mathematics for all.

“We started with just 13 part-ners and now we have over 50 groups including all of the uni-versities and institutes of tech-nology, teacher training colleges and many professional groups and visitor centres providing events and activities for all.

“Maths Week shows what we can achieve through a concerted effort by all working together. Thankfully, we see a great im-provement in interest in maths among our young people and Maths Week will continue to fos-ter that interest as we enter our second decade.”

Gill added that the support of sponsors is central to the success of Maths Week.

“We simply would not be able to bring the positive message about maths to as many young

Kicking off on October 10 and running until October 18, the week-long celebration will in-clude lots of fun and exciting activities for children, parents, teachers, maths enthusiasts and people everywhere.

Dublin schools are being invit-ed to take part by holding their own Maths Week event, which can be registered on www.math-sweek.ie

Marking its first decade, Maths Week is the largest festival of maths in the world with over one million people attending events over the first 10 years.

This year’s events were launched by Education and Skills Minister, Jan O’Sullivan, and Pro-fessor Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Advi-sor to the Government, together with members of the Belvedere Youth Club in Dublin city centre who will also be taking part in Maths Week Ireland.

World renowned and locally acclaimed mathematicians will enlighten and entertain people of all ages in the wonder of maths through fun and interesting talks, games, teasers, challenges and magic maths shows.

And for those who can’t make it to an event, activities will also be available on www.mathsweek.ie and Twitter at @mathsweek.

The all-Island event is run in conjunction with partners includ-ing Science Foundation Ireland and the Department of Educa-tion and Skills, universities, In-stitutes of Technology, teacher training colleges, visitor centres, other groups and employers both North and South.

“We can all agree that maths and numeracy are essential life

skills, while also contributing to developments across a wide vari-ety of STEM-related disciplines,” Minister O’Sullivan said.

“This unique and innovative national festival is contributing strongly to overall accessibility and awareness of the benefits and opportunities that maths provides for young people and I am delighted to wish this year’s event every success.”

Professor Mark Ferguson, Di-rector General of Science Foun-dation Ireland and Chief Scien-tific Advisor to the Government said Science Foundation Ireland was delighted to support Maths Week 2015. “Maths is essential to Ireland achieving its potential as a global leader in science and engineering,” he added.

“By encouraging more young people to study and understand the relevance of maths we are making Ireland more interna-tionally competitive and creating jobs.”

Co-ordinated by Calmast at Waterford Institute of Technol-ogy, Maths Week Ireland is run as a partnership of over 50 public and private sector institutions and groups, including the univer-sities and Institutes of Technolo-gy, professional bodies, libraries and visitor centres committed to promoting an interest in math-ematics.

INTO sets out its stall at political briefing THE Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) set out its roadmap for Budget 2016 and the upcoming general election at a recent briefing event for TDs and Senators.

The INTO’s ‘Stand up for Primary Education’ campaign sets out a vision for primary education in Ireland with key areas of focus being smaller class sizes, increased funding and greater support for school leaders.

Speaking at the briefing event, Sheila Nunan, General Secre-tary of the INTO, said: “Ireland is in a new phase of growth and now is the time to be investing in primary education.

“Not everyone will complete secondary education or go to university, but almost every child in Ireland will attend primary education, and every child should be given the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential.

“This means smaller classes, which will allow teachers to support each child individually, and well-funded schools with professional, dedicated teachers who are led and supported by excellent school leaders.

“Early investment will reap real rewards for society and for the economy.”

Classes in Irish primary schools are among the most over-crowded in the EU, with an average of 25 pupils per class com-pared to an EU average of 21.

More than 100,000 pupils in Ireland are in classes of 30 or more.

I was getting admiring glances in the Jaguar XE

for the X-Type and XF. We don’t get many British-built

cars in Ireland nowadays,+ apart from Nissans which are assem-bled in Sunderland. Jaguar and Land Rover, who are now both owned by Indian company Tata, are built near Birmingham.

When you sit in the steering wheel drops down when you press the start button. I drove an automatic version which was naturally a joy to travel in. And fuel consumption was excellent, considering that I did a lot of driving during the early morn-ing and evening rush hours on

the clogged up streets along the Grand Canal.

The reversing camera was ex-cellent and there is also a button to turn on the camera while you are driving. I suppose it’s always nice to see who is in your slip stream.

The version I drove had revers-ing sensors and the side mirrors moved up and down when revers-ing to give greater visibility.

On the road this is a very com-fortable motor to travel in, but like the Mercedes Shooting Brake the previous week, my front seat passengers thought the roofl ine was a bit low.

Jaguar has high hopes for this new rear-wheel saloon as they compete with great rivals Mer-cedes, BMW and Audi.

During the week I had the XE I spent a night at the luxurious Kelly’s Hotel in Rosslare where the Jaguar certainly didn’t look out of place in a car park full of Mercs, Volvos and Beemers.

Prices start at €38,995, while the 2.0 automatic R Sport ver-sion I drove will cost you €47,310. Road tax starts at €180 for the entry level version and rises to €200 for the model I drove. The version I drove had a lot of extras including a blind spot indicator on both wing mirrors to warn the driver of cars overtaking on the outside or inside.

And the good news is that there is a ‘mini’ spare wheel. While the front is really attractive it’s reassuring to know you have something to rely on in the back if you get a puncture.

I mentioned earlier that many male businessmen on the streets of Dublin turned their heads when they saw the XE. A few weeks back I read about two fi ve-year-old Russian boys who used their spades to dig their way out of their kindergarten and set o on a mission to buy a Jaguar sports car. Some young people have great taste!

Seán Creedon

LAST week I had the new Jag-uar XE on test and I can hon-estly say that I have never had so many curious glances from men in suits. The front of the car, with its distinctive grille, massive bonnet and Jaguar logo, certainly attracted the attention of the corporate sec-tor in Dublin 4.

I was surprised how many men stopped to admire the Jaguar and for many of the business types this was obviously their fi rst view of the XE in Ireland.

The XE is the fi rst compact ex-ecutive car Jaguar has produced since the 2009 model X-Type and it’s the fi rst of several Jaguar models to be built using Jaguar’s new modular aluminium archi-tecture, moving the company away from the Ford derived plat-forms that were used in the past

Clearing out the clutter

Our inner hoarder takes us over when we decide to get rid of the clutter so logic goes out the window, and most of the junk stays put. But approaching the job with a healthy attitude can help disarm your clutter-hoard-ing alter-ego. Declutter Thera-pist, Breda Stack, boasts a holis-tic background in interior design and architecture and she’s come up with five common decluttering mistakes to avoid when you em-bark on a clear-out.

1. Don’t confuse decluttering with organising. They’re two very different skills, and I know many brilliant organisers who have found it difficult to declutter.

Where organisation is about

putting systems in place, I would define decluttering as the ability to ‘let go’ of unwanted items.

2. Don’t go for perfection. Very high standards often hin-der or sabotage our decluttering efforts as we find it hard to imagine things being ‘exactly’ right, espe-cially if we’ve a lot to get through.

P e r f e c t i o n i s m tends to result in procrastination and overwhelm, and this stuck state can

MANY of us avoid decluttering because we’re afraid that one day we’re going to need that old, broken up camp bed or find a place for that ugly, lime green lamp-shade.

result in us feeling further guilt and hopelessness.

3. Don’t worry about what oth-ers think. Sometimes family and friends may not be on board with our plans to declutter, and this lack of support can take many forms.

While I never recommend de-cluttering someone’s possessions behind their back, it’s important that we don’t wait for anyone else’s permission to clear out our own personal items.

4. Not having a plan. Clutter builds over time so it can take time to conquer. I’ve seen how rushing into the process with-out a strategy or set of realistic, well-defined steps can cause us to waste time and energy and quickly lose interest.

5. Focusing on the process in-stead of the outcome. It can be difficult to motivate ourselves to declutter if we can’t picture the end result.

We also likely won’t feel spurred on if we’re dwelling on the minor details.

essential tips for approaching that vital interview

Cormac Spencer

As a recruiter, I find that candi-dates often identify interviews as the most daunting part of their job search.

They can be nerve wracking, but if the process means the differ-ence between landing your dream job and treading water, then it is important that everything possi-ble is done to hone interview skills for success.

With the right strategy the pro-cess is not as difficult as it seems, and while every interview and ev-ery interviewer will differ in style,

the advice outlined below can be employed uniformly to help en-sure you put yourself in pole posi-tion for a job offer.

Do your Homework – Don’t go into an interview without research-ing the company and the people interviewing you. By preparing properly, you remove uncertainty and you allow yourself to engineer answers in a way that portrays you not just as a good candidate, but as the right candidate for the or-ganization in question.

Study the companies’ website, read about them in the news, and look up your interviewers’ Linke-

dIn profiles. A LinkedIn profile firstly provides a photograph of your interviewer (if they trip over you in the lobby you can avoid the mistake of cursing their existence) and also provides biographical info on their employment history, edu-cation and interests all of which can be used to your advantage when approaching an interview.

If your employer went to the same school, or likes Morris danc-ing too, it may be a conversation piece to break the ice and lead to a more relaxed atmosphere. Infor-mation is power.

Work Smarter – Knowing your

It is important that everything possible is done to hone interview skills for success. PIC POSED

AS my articles have pointed out in the past, a strong CV is a crucial step in securing a new job. How-ever, it is only the first step in the selection process. If a CV makes the grade, then applicants can expect anything from a single meeting to several rounds of interviews before an offer is tabled and while a good CV opens doors, interviews are about proving you have what it takes to be invited in out of the cold.

CV and being able to recount your work history in a coherent way is a must, but too often people focus their energy on their work expe-rience in its totality rather than focusing on the areas that are rel-evant specifically to the job they are interviewing for.

Read the job spec carefully and consider the business model of the company. What they do? Who are their clients?

By knowing exactly what your interviewer wants you can cus-tomise your answers and show that you are clued in to the needs of the business.

BE INtEREStEDThe feedback I often receive

from employers is that candidates come across as disinterested or blasé in interview.

Why go to the trouble of re-searching the company, learning off your CV and getting your suit dry cleaned only to attend inter-view and waste the time by not outlining why you, above all oth-ers, are the person for the job?

Nobody should be on bended knee to an employer – they need good candidates just as much as candidates want good jobs – but what is clear is that employers

look for motivation as well as ex-perience when making a decision.

When choosing between two people with similar backgrounds, they will plump for the one they feel actually wants to do well in the role and who gives the im-pression that this isn’t simply a stop-gap until they find some-thing better.

Don’t be afraid to tell an em-ployer outright: “I want this job”.

Consumers taking longer term view of their finances

deciding factor when choosing a mortgage. Getting to know your local mortgage advisor, whether as a first-time buyer or seasoned home owner, can bring peace of mind and a personal touch to the process, helping support the move to a new home every step of the way.

At KBC Dundrum, the team of mortgage specialists led by Zoe Bourne is always on hand to lis-ten and advise in their dedicated hub at Unit G14, Dundrum Village Shopping Centre, Dublin 16.

Whether it’s for an initial chat, specific enquiry or new mortgage application, there is always time to meet the team at KBC Dun-drum. Drop in to the hub or call ahead on 01-5131060 to make an appointment.

When it comes to choosing a mortgage, the research revealed that achieving better value (sav-ings) over the life of the mort-gage is the most important con-sideration for the vast majority of consumers (75 per cent) and that this is an especially important consideration for female home owners (81 per cent) looking to move.

The average budget that re-spondents have to spend nation-ally on a new home comes in at just under €210,000 (€209,300). Six in 10 (57 per cent) plan to spend less than €200k on a house, with one in four (24 per cent) forecasting between €200k-€300k, and a further 14 per cent budgeting for €300k-€400k.

Half of respondents (50 per cent) cited the need for more space or to accommodate a grow-ing family as the primary reason for moving, particularly female respondents (83 per cent), while the desire to live in a better loca-

tion was a priority for one in four (25 per cent).

One in 10 said that they wanted to invest in a higher value prop-erty for the future, and a small proportion (2 per cent) of home owners said that noisy or annoy-ing neighbours are the reason for the move. An additional 3 per cent of female respondents want to live closer to family.

Whatever the motivation for moving, KBC’s research shows that consumers are taking a long-term view of their finances with lifetime savings now a major

RESEARCH commissioned by KBC Bank shows that a significant proportion of Ireland’s 25 to 40-year-old homeowners are on the move, with one in four (23per cent) saying they plan to move property in the next year and a further 7 per cent having recently traded up to a larger home.

KBC has found that people are taking a more long-term view of their finances when it comes to mortgages. PHOTO: BIGSTOCK▪
