  • H L Browns new watch workshop is the perfectplace to keep your timepiece in top condition.

    Words: Fiona Barber

    SS Jewellery

Whether its a family heirloom,a gift for a special birthdayor something you boughtwith your first wage, awatch is often a personsmost prized possession. When something sotreasured no longer ticks along as it once did, taking it to be repaired or serviced can benerve-wracking, but at H L Brown in BarkersPool, you can be assured your watch willreceive only the highest standard of care.

The Sheffield family jewellers, establishedin 1861, has built a brand-new watchworkshop designed by Rolex Geneva. Itoffers the perfect environment for H LBrowns Rolex accredited watchmaker LukeIreland to service and refurbish the worldsmost highly-engineered timepieces.

Luke has worked for H L Brown for over19 years and is delighted with the newworkshop. We have excellent equipment andthe space has changed from a traditionalworkshop to more of a clinical setting, hesays.

The workshop features two benches, one for case work and another watchmakingbench, where Luke expertly dismantles andreassembles pieces. There is a state-of-the-art ultrasonic cleaning tank and a rigoroustesting process for water resistancy, including vacuum, pressure andcondensation tests, ensuring your watch is

    perfectly sealed against theelements.

A fine eye for detail and amethodical approach isessential for this line of workand, with almost two decadesin the industry, Luke hascertainly perfected his craft. You need a lot of patience, but I like to really get into thezone, he says. Once I havecompletely disassembled apiece I examine eachindividual part with a really

strong eye glass to ascertain what work isrequired.

I enjoy working on any good-qualitywatches, it doesnt have to be amazinglyexpensive to be well engineered. It can still beinteresting because, even though they are alldoing the same job, they are all built slightlydifferently. Luke adds: My favourite isprobably Rolex because I work on them somuch, I understand the brand and as its sowell made, it goes together and comes aparteasily; it effortlessly falls into place.

Watchmaking is a highly skilled professionand requires a phenomenal level of dexterityand concentration, says James Frampton, H LBrown managing director. The increasedpopularity of mechanical wrist watches hasseen an increase in the demand for trainedwatchmakers and we are extremely fortunateto employ one of the very best. Lukesexperience and skills, along with the newRolex-accredited workshop means we canoffer our customers the very best service.

  • Step backin timeFiona Barber finds that this vintagetearoom is a little slice of heaven.

    Words: Fiona Barber

    SS Eating Out

Its so easy to getcaught up in thehustle and bustleof everyday life, but every now andthen, its important tostep off the hamsterwheel and enjoy a littlerelaxation. If only wecould go back in time toan era when things weresimpler ahh if only.

At H & F Vintage Tearooms inChesterfield, customers can do exactly that.Step through the doors of this quirky cafand you will be welcomed into an emporiumof all-things vintage. Tasselled lamps, old-school radios and nostalgic songs fromyesteryear crooning in the background arejust a few elements that set this venue apartas no average tearoom. Even the staff are in

character, with ladies dressed in beautifulflowery red tea dresses.

Owner Louise Peel opened the vintagefurniture store seven years ago and says: Alot of people travel a long distance to comehere and we felt like we were sending themaway to make decisions on furniture. Werealised it would be ideal to have a coffeeshop onsite instead.

The caf opened two years ago andrecently expanded to include an outdoorarea, ideal for enjoying a glass of fizz or twoin the sunshine with afternoon tea.

On our visit one Thursday afternoon, aspread of proudly displayed homemade cakesindicated we were in for a real treat from theoff. As well as the many sweet indulgences, the caf also offers up plenty of savouryoptions too, including dishes such as crushedavocado with cherry tomatoes and a poachedegg on toast, and goats cheese andcaramelised onion tart.

Tempted by so many possibilities, theafternoon tea was the ideal choice andallowed us a taster of sandwiches, scones andcakes. We stepped up to the counter asgleeful as children in a candy shop to perusethe homemade desserts. Our new mojitocake has proved especially popular, ownerLouise Peel said as I oohed at the colourfulgreen sponge. But anything involvingGuinness and chocolate wins my vote everytime my decision was an easy one. My

companion chose the alluring apple andrhubarb cake along with a fruit scone tomatch.

My loose leaf redbush tea arrived in realstyle, accompanied by three mini sand timersto determine the perfect tea strength. Ourafternoon tea closely followed and wasbeautifully presented over three tiers.

The selection of sandwiches were bothtasty and varied, with a range of fillingsincluding ham, egg mayonnaise and smokedsalmon and cheese. We devoured these andmoved swiftly on to course two: a fruit scone served with delicate pots of jam andclotted cream and a classic cheese sconeaccompanied by a generous layer of luxuriousbutter. Dessert undoubtedly stole the showand the Guinness and chocolate cake wasdeliciously moist, while my partners featureda wonderful sharpness.

With plates cleared and after browsingthe vintage furniture and furnishings it wastime to step out of H & F Tearooms and backinto the real world, already planning when wewould return to our new place of solace.

Flashbulbs popped, wine flowed, andexcitement reached fever pitch as guest hostHoward Middleton who flew the flagproudly for Sheffield in the 2013 Great BritishBake-Off marshalled proceedings, andannounced a grand total of 16 award winners.

It was a fantastic party with a wide rangeof prize-winners, and the biggest smiles on thenight belonged to Charlie Curran and theteam at Peppercorn, as the popular AbbeydaleRoad South diner scooped a dazzling doublefirst Best Contemporary and the highly-coveted Restaurant of the Year.

Other highlights of the evening includedDarren Utley winning Best Young Chef. Thistalented whippersnapper has been cooking upa culinary storm at the Cross Scythes in Totleyfor the last three years and is already makinghis mark with his creative flair and passing onhis knowledge to other trainee chefs.

This year, the Best Indian Restaurantcategory was so hot our judges could notslide a poppadum (as Howard so eloquentlyput it) between the top two. So, in anunprecedented move, both Ashoka andButlers Balti House were named as jointwinners.

Elsewhere, the nominations list saw well-established eateries like Nonnas andNapoleons sitting alongside newcomers, suchas pizza-haven Proove in Broomhill, that havemade an immediate impact proving thecitys restaurant scene is as thriving as ever.

The evening kicked off with a warmwelcome from RMC Medias managing editorChris Wilson and Howard kept the crowdentertained throughout the evening with

witty one-liners, while Westsides publishingmanager Samantha Warsop was on hand topresent the awards.

The awards were held at Sheffieldspremier banqueting venue, Baldwins Omega, and over 200 guests enjoyed a sumptuousfive-course meal provided by host DavidBaldwin and his team, with a level of qualitythat aptly reflected the evenings gifted guests.

Our special thanks go to Fran ONeill ofThe Austins Group, sponsors of the awards, who ensured attendees were in a sparklingmood from the off with a refreshing glass offizz. Fran also specially selected one whitewine, Las Condes Chardonnay from Chile, and one red, Pure Sangiovese from Italy tomatch the menu. These excellent choices anddelicious food from the ever-consistentBaldwins, provided the perfect combination.

Though every nominated restaurant waspraised for its incredibly high standards, theycouldnt all be winners. Read on to find outwho picked up the regions most covetedawards.

From the very beginning local restaurantsplayed a key part and in the first issue MarvinClose served up a selection of his favourite triedand tested restaurants Deakins and San Remoin Sheffield, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn andthe George Restaurant and Hotel in Derbyshireall came up trumps. We have continued tosupport local restaurants over the years and now,the annual Westside Restaurant Awards, whichcelebrates the regions finest, is one of the hottestevents on the Sheffield social calendar.

Our gossip column Gnome appeared veryearly on. This anonymous spy infiltrated the livesand parties of Westside people and gave readers abanquet of salacious gossip to feast upon. Whois the Gnome? became the question oneverybodys lips. Of course, we never told.

In May 1989 Westside went on the hunt forthe regions most beautiful people. Women in thefashion business nominated from the ranks ofmen and Barnsley hairdresser Simon Nichollswas chosen for his effortless style. Managingdirector Tony Morgan was nominated bybeautician Lynda Price who said: Hes not atowering six footer but hes got everything elseand he looks good whatever he wears.

The first Westside June Guide was produced in1991 to celebrate the World Student Gamescoming to Sheffield. This magazine is now anannual listings guide including restaurants, shops, and things to see and do in the region.

Looking forward to the Millennium, in 1999Westside got all geared up with its guide to thebest Champagne. We gathered a panel ofrestaurateurs at Fischers Baslow Hall for atasting. They tried 13 different bottles at varyingprices and the winner was a budget bubbly,Tescos Champagne Brut.

Westside has always tried to take a light-heartedapproach wherever possible and in 2011 wecocked a snook at the recession with a typicalquirky look at the various ways at which youcould squander a lot of money very quickly. Frombuying a sports car with plummeting value tohaving your locks trimmed at a high-end salon, wediscovered theres plenty ways to splash the cash.

Of course, none of Westsides longevity wouldhave been possible without the backing of ouradvertisers and some including the likes ofBlundells and PA Jewellery, who advertised inthe very first issue have been with us from thestart.

June 1989 EastsideIn the first issue of the quality magazine forDoncaster, Rotherham and North Notts weinvestigated the ins and outs of owning aracehorse, meeting a syndicate based in thePilgrim Father pub in Scrooby, who paid 450each for a part-share in a nag that might oneday lead them to the winners enclosure. Withour official partnership status with DoncasterRacecourse and the St Leger Festival, Eastsidehas retained a strong equine focus and themagazine regularly features upcoming racedays and photos from the many events.

Weve always enjoyed a good gossip hereat Eastside, and our resident party animalToad has been at the heart of the socialscene for a long time, making its debut in the spring of 97. Rather like Doctor Who,this is a beast that changes form every few years, but our appetite for party picturesand local lifestyle news never fades.

The new millennium saw Eastside enjoying an exclusive face-to-face withDoncasters own Jeremy Clarkson. He was quick to deny national newspaper reportsthat he had been rude about his home town but, in the same breath, could not resist

having a dig at Rotherham and Mexborough. Eastside has always kept a very close eye on the local

dining scene and three years ago we stepped up our supportfor the regions fabulous restaurants with our first EastsideRestaurant Awards, which has enjoyed great success eachyear at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry.

With its many boutiques, restaurants and thrivingcommunity spirit, the market town of Bawtry lies at the heartof Eastside Magazine. In celebration of this, Eastside featuresVisit Bawtry a section devoted to celebrating all-thingsBawtry four times a year. >

From fun, local features, and interviews withthe likes of Sheffield Wednesday womensteam captain Steph Spence in 1999, to moreserious topics, like how local businessesbounced back after the flood of 25 June 2007,Sixer has been at the heart of North Sheffield.

In March 2004 we selflessly went in searchof Hillsboroughs tastiest pork sandwiches.Four sandwich shops were put to the test.Baps from the Hungry Wolf, Bres PorkShop, Biltons and Lilys were all judged onquality of meat, bread, stuffing and sauce.Bres (which has been around since 1961)was declared the winner, with Lilys insecond place, and Biltons and Hungry Wolf in joint third.

Always keen to keep in touch with local celebs, in January 2008 we caught up withChapeltown lad Steve Peat. He grew up riding in Wharncliffe Woods and trained as anapprentice plumber, and it was his boss who introduced him to his first race. By 2008 hewas twice World Champion, seven times British Champion and twice European Champion.

In October 2011 we featured amateur dramatic society, the Stannington Players, whowere celebrating 60 years of entertaining locals with qualitytheatre. The group has a rich history that dates back to justafter the war; they actually began as a play-reading society inpeoples houses. There were many name changes over the yearsbut the group formally formed as the Stannington Players in1951.

In 2014 the Tour De France was one of if not the biggestevents to ever grace the rolling hills of North Sheffield. Thisall-cycling issue featured a Tour De France guide, anexplanation of the jerseys, an interview with Team Skys BenSwift, cycling fashion and a feature on the Bradfield Hill Climb.

First For Business (FFB) delivers the latestbusiness news and views from the SheffieldCity Region to the desks of business leaders inSouth Yorkshire and the North Midlands. Itoffers a strong, independent voice which hasgiven it a standing within the local businesscommunity since it launched over 25 yearsago.

While plenty has changed over the last 26years, much of what matters to the businesscommunity remains the same. As far back as1990 hot topics included transport, manufacturing and city centre regeneration.Sound familiar?

Of course, these are the issues that matterwhen you are trying to make your city orregion as economically successful as possibleand no doubt in years to come well still bediscussing them. And were sure youll bereading all about them in FFB! Here are somehighlights from the last 26 years.

In March 1995 we ran a feature about theway new trademark laws (introduced in the1994 Trade Marks Act) were making thingseasier for companies. The same issue includeda feature on the latest phase of the VictoriaQuays project including news that NabarroNathanson would occupy newly-built offices onthe site.

The following year we asked: shouldbusinesses be on the internet? There followeda detailed explanation of the various uses ofthe internet, including a relatively unknownform of communication: the email. Would itever catch on? We thought it had a chance.

Back in June 2008 the cover of now-monthlyFFB featured none other than Sheffield goldengirl Jessica Ennis-Hill. Andy Waple wrote:Jessica Ennis, one of Britains top athletescruelly robbed of an Olympic challenge inBeijing, is a perfect example of the new kind ofexport that is helping to reinforce the messagethat Made in Sheffield is still an internationalmark of quality.

As well as a keen focus on business news,FFB has interviewed some influential businesspeople, including former director-general of theBBC, chairman of the Football Association andSheffield hotelier Greg Dyke and TV DragonJames Caan, who was FFBs cover star in 2010.He shared his views on business in anaccompanying interview.

In September 2014, FFB became an officialmedia partner for MADE: The EntrepreneurFestival. This issue featured speaker MichelleMone on the cover and included interviews

  • 30 HAPPY RETURNS

    11

ere at RMC Media wevealways tried to do our bitto make the world a

better place, raising money fornational and local good causesthrough cake sales, quizzes andcharity days... and we will alwayscontinue to do so.

But to celebrate our 30th year inbusiness, we are also looking to dosomething a little different. Thistime, rather than shaking thecharity tin and asking others tocontribute, well be getting stuck inand making our own practicalcontribution to the many goodlocal causes that are close to ourhearts.

30 Happy Returns is RMCMedias modest way of puttingsomething back into ourcommunity. As individuals andcollectively, we will be going outand about over the next year, doing anything from litter pickingto volunteering in animal shelters.

Well return to this storyregularly over the coming monthsand you can see how we get on,both in the magazines and on ourwebsite. You may spot us out andabout in the community well bewearing the rather snazzy t-shirtsworn by managing editor ChrisWilson (see above).

Meanwhile, to get the ballrolling, Chris spent some timevolunteering at a new cafe thattakes a unique approach tosourcing ingredients.

So how do I find myself wiping down tables andchopping vegetables in a caf where people areinvited to pay what they feel for their meal?

It starts with the fact that 15 million tonnes offood is ditched in the UK every year. Thats threewheelie bins of food per person, making us themost wasteful nation in the EU. Food for thought especially when, like me, you are fortunateenough to have a job that involves quite a lot ofeating out in rather nice restaurants acrossYorkshire and North Derbyshire.

I first became aware of The Real Junk FoodProject, Sheffield last summer when a friend toldme she had spent the day after Tramlines, aweekend music festival in Sheffield, helping outin a pop-up restaurant where the mainingredients consisted of food left over after thebands moved on and the fans went home.

The food was not past its sell-by date orcontaminated in any way, but after events likethis, the simplest thing for the vendors wassimply to dump it and move on to the nextevent. Most of it was destined to end up in alandfill site.

A small band of volunteer chefs, kitchen hands, pot washers and general helpers was trying to dosomething about this. Diners could pay what theycould afford, or what they thought the meal wasworth. Those who believed in the cause andcould afford it might decide to pay more; thosewith empty pockets could volunteer, washingdishes in return for food.

It turned out this pop-up restaurant was farfrom a one-off but part of a movement thatbegan when Leeds-born chef Adam Smith foundhimself working on a farm in Australia where hewitnessed the vast scale of food waste, in

agriculture and the catering industry. He came home and set up a caf in Armley,

Leeds, in 2013. There are now 95 across thecountry, staffed by volunteers cooking food thatwould otherwise go to waste, donated by localbusinesses, supermarkets, catering events, localhouseholds, food banks, farms and wholesalers.

The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield is now ayear old and has grown from pop-up events tohaving its own caf, at Regather Works on ClubGarden Road, very close to London Roadsbustling array of restaurants, pubs and shops.Project director Jo Hercberg spent a decade inthe online travel industry before deciding to leavethe corporate world and do something she reallybelieved in.

The caf is staffed by volunteers whilst foodcomes from local businesses, supermarkets, catering events, local households, food banks, farms and wholesalers.

Hopefully there will be pay-as-you-feel cafsall over the country soon, says Jo. But if themessage spreads, and people start to think and actmore about food waste, there will come a timewhen they close down because they wont beneeded.

As for my own small contribution, a morningspent wiping down and setting tables, putting thechalk boards outside and making a salad to gowith the lunchtime quiches that Jo had cookedthe previous day, was rewarding, and fun too.

The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffields caf isat Regather Works (57-59 Club Garden Road,Sheffield, S11 8BU). Open Thursday and Friday,11am-8pm and Sunday 11am-3pm.realjunkfoodsheffield.com
