Marathon effort from brave James

this brave lucan lad is taking part in the dublin Marathon later this year.

James Casserly (10) will participate in the SSE Airtricity event for Barretstown, the charity for seriously ill children, on October 30.

James, who has cerebral palsy and juvenile arthritis, will be at the starting line up in an assisted chair as part of Team James.

Mark Lacey, James’s coach, will participate in the race alongside him. The pair have been training for months ahead of the October marathon and have raised much needed funds for Barretstown in the process.

Speaking about his participation and the reasons for choosing Barretstown as the benefitting charity, James said it was because it was such a special and magical place.

“I’m really excited to be taking on this challenge to give something back to the charity that helped me so much last year,” he said. “The training has been really enjoyable and Mark has been there with me the whole way. I can’t wait now to compete in October.”

James’s coach Mark added that training has been going really well and they were building up to the big day.

“We do rehab and strength training in Insanity Fitzone in Palmerston every week and we also train every Sunday in the Phoenix Park from 10am,” Mark said. “So if anyone would like to join us they are more than welcome. Dee Ahearn, the CEO of Barretstown, said they were thrilled to be chosen as James’s charity.

“James has spent time with us here at camp and has experienced the magic it brings to children who have lost some of their childhood due to serious illness,” Dee said. “The bravery and enthusiasm he has shown in talking on the marathon as a challenge is phenomenal and we wish him the very best of luck in his training over the coming months and for the big race itself in October.”

Council raises rainbow flag

The decision came on foot of a motion tabled by local coun-cillor Carrie Smyth (Lab).

Welcoming the news, Cllr Smyth said: “I really welcome the decision by the council’s of-ficials to have the rainbow flag flown on one of the flagpoles in front of County Hall. It is even more relevant after the trag-edy in Orlando and it being the first Pride Festival of the year.

“I think its significance is very important and the LGBT community will know they are very welcome and we are in-clusive in Dún Laoghaire Rath-down.”

In its report, the council said arrangements had been made to have the rainbow flag flown on one of the flagpoles on the footpath in front of County Hall to mark the Pride Festival,

WHY do today what you can put off till tomorrow… or next year, even.

Just weeks into the new minority Gov-ernment’s reign and we are starting to get a picture of what this so-called ‘new politics’ means. It seems to be a case that every single unpopular measure will be kicked down the road until such a time that we have a couple of budgets under our belts.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan al-luded to this last week when he admit-

ted he didn’t know how long the current minority arrangement would last. The plan, at least, is that Fianna Fáil will be on board for three budgets before the situation is reviewed. That is, of course, if banana skins can be avoided in the interim.

Early last week, it was looking like the Government had found its new Irish Water in the form of the pay-by-weight bin charges controversy. But Fine Gael, still smarting from the water charges debacle, were anxious to kick this one to touch. So they did exactly what they did with water bills – put the decision off for another time.

To be fair, Housing Minister Simon Coveney was caught between a rock and a hard place as this new bin pay-ment system had been coming down the tracks for some time. For most house-holders, it was simply a fear of the un-known. Would we be rewarded with reduced bills for managing our waste more sensibly? The truth is, none of us really know.

Now that we’ve been given a one-year stay of execution, the Government and waste management companies can properly engage with the public on what the changeover will mean for us. We can expect to be love bombed with glossy information packs and slick radio and TV advertising campaigns between now

and then.The Government will be hoping that

last week’s decision (if it can even be called that) will take the heat out of the situation. But if a week is a long time in politics, then a year is an eternity.

Instead of allaying concerns about bin

charges, Fine Gael may have unwittingly given its opponents time to mobilise. This could result in the political night-mare scenario of public protests and campaigns of civil disobedience.

And in the event of mass non-pay-ment, will this result in a public health

hazard with rubbish piling up on our streets and increased illegal dumping?

Rather than diffuse the controversy, I can’t escape the feeling that the Govern-ment has simply taken the pin out of the grenade.

Best destination award for LisbontOURISM chiefs in Lisbon are celebrating after the Portu-guese capital was selected as Best city or Short Break Des-tination in last month’s travel Media Awards that took place in Dublin at the end of May.

The award distinguishes Lis-bon as the best destination for short breaks in Europe, based on the quality and diversity of its hotels, museums, monuments, restaurants, as well as its many other tourist attractions.

Mayor addresses a sticky problem

“The Gum Litter Taskforce is a unique industry funded ini-tiative that runs in partnership with local and national gov-ernment and civic society to tackle a common goal through awareness and education. The campaign results to date have

demonstrated the success it has had in changing behaviour and attitudes to gum littering.”

Each of the local authorities will launch their own campaigns in the coming weeks. The 26 participating authorities include Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire Rath-down and South Dublin County Council.

THE Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Sarah Hol-land, has urged Southsiders to tackle the sticky issue of gum litter.

The mayor was speaking at the launch of the 2016 Gum Lit-ter Taskforce (GLT) gum litter education campaign in Tem-pleogue last week.

Since the campaign was first launched in 2007, the National Litter Pollution Monitoring Sys-tem results show an overall de-crease in people dropping gum from 26 to 11 per cent.

The results of the attitudinal research carried out by Millward Brown on behalf of the GLT dur-ing the 2015 campaign saw the highest numbers to date report-ing that they never drop gum.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor Holland said: “It is wonderful to see everyone in the community coming together to get behind this campaign, both here in South Dublin and in so many

towns around the country.“The GLT campaign brings to-

gether the community and local authorities with a common goal - to fight gum litter.”

Paul Kelly, chairman of the GLT, added: “The main goal of this campaign has always been to reduce the amount of gum lit-ter and change people’s behav-iour towards littering.

“The results of the National Litter Pollution Monitoring Sys-tem are demonstrable proof of the success of the campaign to date.

“We’re hoping to build on this success again this year and see even better results. The national launch today will set off an ex-tensive advertising campaign which is being rolled out nation-wide and includes the various strands of the campaign such as the hugely popular Bin It!”

LORRAINE Murphy is the moth-er of three children. Her young-est child, Anna (6), was born profoundly deaf but has made incredible progress since hav-ing two successful cochlear im-plants at Beaumont Hospital. Here, Lorraine lists 20 things that parents of a special needs child might relate to.

1. People say the funniest things – and not of the ‘ha ha’ variety. Sometimes you’ll have to bite your tongue because you will hear some gems. At first this will upset you but in time you learn to use it as a chance to educate.

2. You will become violently allergic to words like ‘retarded’, ‘handicapped’, ‘deaf and dumb’. Again, use this as a chance to ed-ucate – the first time. The second time, the gloves are off!

3. School reports take on a whole new meaning with full-on celebrations erupting when you see ‘managing comfortably’ scor-ings. Spoiler alert - you may take to hugging good teachers!

4. You are aware that your child may have been written off only a few decades ago – this both scares you and makes you feel grateful.

5. You would do anything to im-prove your child’s life but some-times are too tired to get out of bed. Really, if you are a parent of a child with special needs, you’ll get this. And it’s okay – it’s okay.

6. You become submissive to the point of embarrassment whenever in the company of a professional who can help your

child, even when they are churn-ing out advice you may not agree with.

7. You may act like a teen-ager on a rare night out – drink too much, dance too much and feel liberated. However, you will have to wake up and face your responsibilites the next morning and you will be in hell. So you’ll go ages without going out again.

8. You will cry a lot. Not only at bad news but at movies, the news, Aldi ads... it can literally happen anywhere.

9. You will seek out parents of children with the same disabil-ity as your child. Then when you meet up, you will be so happy to talk to someone who gets it.

10. You will die just a little bit every time you meet a friend who has a ‘normal’ child the same age. It’s not fair and you know it’s irrational but, man, does that s**t hurt.

11. You will have to fight for services that should be in place. This will take time from your child and it will zap all your en-

that you are super human, which brings me to the next point.

13. You will feel inadequate. You will wonder if your child would have had a better life if they’d been born to different parents. The answer is: YOU ARE ENOUGH! The love you have for this kid knows no end.

14. You may experience sleep problems – and by that I mean a 3am nightly spiral of self hatred where you take out everything you’ve done wrong and beat yourself black and blue with it. Yup, we get it, but it’s pointless and only makes you wrecked for the next day. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!

15. Checking out schools be-comes a mission on FBI levels. Getting the right school is right up there with breathing for us and a lot of work goes into finding the perfect one. When you find it, it basically means you have a part-ner to share the worry/ guilt and work for the next 6/8 years.

16. You will become a student of your child’s disability to a PHD level. Seriously, you could lecture

in this subject at third level, and, honestly, you would be a great addition.

17. You will bore the hell out of your ‘normal’ friends. They won’t get it and you know you probably wouldn’t either if it wasn’t hap-pening to you.

18. You may mourn the future you anticipated for your child. That’s normal and it’s okay (just don’t turn on the Aldi ad). One day you will be ready to dream again.

19. Everyone will have an opin-ion and think their opinion is the only opinion. Think strangers rubbing your bump when you’re pregnant (eugh!). You are the only one who gets to say how your child is raised – to hell with everyone else!

20. Your life and that of your family’s will never be the same, often for the better. Special needs kids often bring patience, understanding, advocacy skills, happiness, mindfulness, humour, hard work, and tolerance to a family. Think differently-abled, not disabled.

Hospitals and professors are backing St James’s campus planPLANS to locate the new Na-tional Children’s Hospital on the Southside received a pow-erful endorsement last week, despite a campaign group call-ing for the project to be moved to Dublin 15.

A joint statement backing the choice of St James’s Hospital as the chosen site was issued by the Children’s Hospital Group, the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, Temple Street University Hospital, the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght, and St James’s Hospital.

“We are unequivocal in our certainty that the campus at St James’s Hospital is the right lo-cation for Ireland’s much needed and much wanted new children’s hospital,” the statement reads. “Sharing a campus with St James’s Hospital will deliver better clinical outcomes and improved survival rates for the sickest children and

young people. “Collectively, we are commit-

ted to delivering a state-of the art children’s hospital and to provid-ing the right care and services in the right location, by the right team, for local children and for Ireland’s most vulnerable chil-dren and young people. Much of the infrastructure of the three Dublin children’s hospitals does not allow us to provide the best possible care, as services are at three different locations in Dub-lin, and this is a source of great daily frustration for all the com-mitted staff working in paediatric services.”

The statement added that while there are many reasons why the campus shared with St James’s is the right location for the new chil-dren’s hospital, the primary one is that it has the greatest number of clinical specialties that will best support their teams in the deliv-ery of better services and clinical outcomes for the sickest children

and young people.It added that this “critical”

level of clinical support was not available at Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.

A joint statement from three Professors of Paediatrics – Owen Smith (UCD), Eleanor Molloy (TCD) and Alf Nicholson (RSCI) – also backed the St James’s cam-pus plan.

They stated: “We, the three Professors of Paediatrics in three of the Dublin universities, col-lectively endorse the campus at St James’s Hospital (SJH) as the right location for the new chil-dren’s hospital, which also accom-modates paediatric academic and research facilities. This campus is unparalleled in the academic op-portunity it presents, not just for paediatrics but the wider health system.

“The speciality of paediatrics already collaborate across the universities. The research com-munity in the existing three chil-

dren’s hospitals have already well recognised research capabilities and tri-locating these with SJH and the Coombe Women’s and Infants University Hospital, who

both have a strong record in healthcare research, will create a cadre of research capabilities that will offer the potential to make real changes, new treatments and

possible new cures to the most complex diseases experienced by our children, mothers and adults for future generations.”

Campaigners have been seek-ing a new children’s hospital for decades. Following a long and detailed planning process and a comprehensive oral hearing last December, An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for the development of the new children’s hospital on a campus shared with St James’s.

Construction work for the first phase of the project is scheduled to commence within a matter of weeks.

Last week, Connolly for Kids handed in a petition with 60,000 signatures to Government Build-ings, calling on the new hospital to be located beside the M50 in Dublin 15.

The campaign group is re-questing an urgent public hearing on the matter by the Oireachtas Committee on Health.

Taoiseach opens new €150 million Google Data CentreTHE Taoiseach Enda Kenny was on the Southside last week as he officially cut the ted tape on Google’s new €150 million data centre.

This is Google’s second major data centre investment in Ireland, and is the newest addition to their global fleet of energy-efficient cloud computing facilities.

Total employment in Google Ireland has now reached 6,000 people, a 20 per cent increase in the past 12 months

To date Google has invested over €750 million in capital assets in Ireland, a fact the company stated that demonstrates a deep

commitment to the country. The internet giant employs

3,000 people directly and about 3,000 people in contracted posi-tions.

The Taoiseach was joined by Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor to mark the occasion.

“The opening of this new €150 million data centre opens a new chapter in Google’s story in Ire-land,” the Taoiseach said. “With the number of people employed by Google now surpassing 6,000, the company is a fantastic leader within Ireland’s digital communi-ty. The Government’s priority is to make Ireland a more competitive

location for new investment and job creation, and the ongoing de-velopment of Ireland’s digital in-dustry is a key part of that plan.”

Minister for Jobs Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’ Connor, added: “I am delighted to be present at Google’s latest in-vestment project in Ireland.

“Google’s continued invest-ment in Ireland is very welcome and this new data centre further enhances Google’s presence in Ireland. It is a vindication of the competitive advantage we can of-fer high technology companies.”

Ronan Harris, VP and Head of Google in Ireland, said the com-pany had continually invested

in Ireland since first arriving in 2003.

“Today’s announcement is part of Google’s plan to build the world’s most energy efficient computing network and the work of our engineering team in Dub-lin is central to this success,” he said.

“We now employ 6,000 people here in Ireland, both direct and contracted employees, and we’re continually hiring, with over 250 open positions currently available at our EMEA headquarters.”

Construction of the data centre took just over one year to com-plete and 400 jobs were created during construction.

Teen friends are cool kid winners

TWO 14-year-old friends, Carl Kanini and Leo Burke from Dalkey, took a winner’s prize at the CoderDojo Coolest Projects Awards at the RDS

recently.

Over 800 young innovators took part in the awards which attracted 10,000 people to what was the largest technology event held in the country this year.

Carl and Leo took top prize in the hardware category for their invention Punch, a braille printer that stamps aluminium labels that can be stuck on things like medicine bottles and detergents.

Other projects that wowed the judges on the day included a mobile flood warning system,

a robotic dog feeding app and a mobile phone for developing countries that doesn’t require a network.

“It was fantastic to see 100 entries from outside Ireland at Coolest Projects,” said co-founder Noel King.

“We now have 1,020 dojos in 63 countries and reach 35,000 children a week.

“Coolest Projects provides the bridge from learning coding skills at local CoderDojos to innovating and creating future employment. We are the piece in the middle which makes the connection.”

This year also saw the introduction of Launch’d – an event over four stages featuring 50 top international speakers as well as 100 of Ireland’s top tech start-up companies.

New airport bus route takes offDUBLIN Bus has launched a new Airlink route to connect the Southside with Dublin Airport.

The new 757 will be the most direct route to the airport as it goes via the Port Tunnel and will serve busy tourist, business and residential areas including St Ste-phens Green, Merrion Square, the Docklands and the IFSC.

It is expected the route will carry 400,000 customer journeys each year as it will cater for 35 ad-ditional hotels and guest houses in Dublin city, equating to over 7,000 beds.

Combined with the Northside Airlink route, both routes will now serve up to 90 hotels and guest-houses with over 18,000 bed.

Another 40 jobs have been cre-ated with the introduction of the

new 757 route and an extension to services on the original 747 route in February.

To celebrate the launch of the new route Dublin Bus conducted a survey to find out a little more about their customers’ holiday ex-perience and preparation.

The survey found that 20 per cent of Dubliners always write a list of what’s going into their suit-case before they start packing.

A majority (71) begin their holiday shopping (clothes, sun glasses, suncreams, beach towels) an impressive three weeks before going on holidays abroad.

Surprisingly though, when it comes to actually getting every-thing into the case most only start this the day before going away (53 per cent), while 41 per cent do it a week before heading off.

chatterboxes – 72 per cent don’t like speaking to strangers sitting beside them on a flight.

Most are very organised, with 97 per cent having never forgot-ten their passport. However, 13 per cent have missed a flight while four per cent have arrived for their flight on the wrong day.

Most of the time Dubliners like to get to the airport two hours be-fore their flight (59 per cent) but the survey did find a few eager beavers, with five per cent saying they like to arrive four hours or more before flying.

The stress can get to some too, with 25 per cent admitting to hav-ing fought with their holiday com-panion before even getting to the

Jellyfish scare over

JUST when you thought it was safe to get back into the water… well, it is now.

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County County Council had erected warning signs at Sandycove after jellyfish were

spotted in the area by nervous bathers.

Thankfully, however, the scare was short lived. The signs were taken down by the council as there have been no further reports or sightings of jellyfish on the affected beaches.

Judge commends ‘brave’ gardaíConor Gallagher

A JUDGE has commended the “extremely brave and impressive” efforts of gardaí to catch a robber who swung a meat cleaver at them.

Gardaí Cathal McGeoghan and David Currivan were manning a checkpoint in Crumlin when they were told that two armed men had just entered a nearby shop.

The gardaí chased the men in their car and then on foot and used their pepper spray on several occasions when it appeared they were going to be attacked. One man was arrested by Garda McGeoghan while another was spotted by the Garda helicopter hiding in a back garden.

Last week, Judge Elma Sheehan remanded one of the robbers, Ciaran Kenny (20), in

custody until October when she will finalise sentence. Kenny’s co-accused is being dealt with separately.

Kenny, of Lourdes Road, Maryland, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbery and production of a meat cleaver in Crumlin on November 30, 2015.

Garda McGeoghan told

prosecuting counsel, Eilis Brennan BL, that Kenny and his accomplice entered a Spar shop with their faces covered. Kenny had a meat cleaver while the other man had a metal bar.

They threatened the cashiers before escaping with nearly €400. The two gardaí arrived in a patrol car as the men left the shop. Garda McGeoghan pepper

sprayed the men while sitting in the car as he was in fear of his safety.

The robbers fled and Garda McGeoghan chased them on foot while Garda Currivan tried to cut them off in the patrol car. Kenny and the other man were seen throwing away coins and their face masks as they ran.

nearby and the men turned and raised their weapons. Garda McGeoghan pepper sprayed the man with the iron bar who he believed to be the bigger threat. This man was arrested while Garda Currivan chased Kenny over a wall.

The Garda lost sight of him but the Garda helicopter was overhead and spotted Kenny

hiding in a garden. He was arrested shortly afterwards and the meat cleaver was found nearby

Defence counsel Jonathan Moore BL said his client had pleaded guilty at an early stage. He said that despite his 20 previous convictions, Kenny still had the capacity to reform himself.

Cycle - you must wait until your aquarium has cycled before adding �sh. The term cycling is applied to the process which takes place as a new aquarium matures. This refers to the build up of good bacteria, which breaks down waste.

Adding Fish - start your aquarium by adding some hardy �sh like zebra danios or cherry barbs. Leave these �sh for a week before adding slowly to your collection as this gives the �ltration system the time needed to take on the increased biologi-cal load.

Pulse check campaign launched

Cardiologist at the Mater Private, said the research shows that people are unsure how to check their pulse.

“It is very straight forward,” he said. “First, face the palm of either hand upwards. Second, place the index and middle fin-ger of your other hand on the wrist; third, count the number of

beats for 30 seconds and double it. This is your pulse rate.”

Anne Doyle, campaign ambas-sador, said: “Routine has always been part of my life going back to my days as a national broad-caster.

“Now checking my pulse is part of my daily routine. It only takes 30 seconds each morning and it leaves me feeling reassured for the rest of the day.“

The Mater Private National Ar-rhythmia Service commissioned the research, which was carried out by Empathy Research among 1,003 Irish adults, aged over 18, during November 2015.

The research is part of Pulse Check, a campaign that was of-ficially launched by former RTÉ newsreader Anne Doyle. It aims to encourage those aged 60 and over to incorporate a simple pulse check into their morning

Former Taoiseach commemorated on the SouthsideA LARGE crowd braved the rain to attend the first annual com-memoration of former Taoise-ach John A Costello in Deans-grange Cemetery, Blackrock, on Sunday, June 19.

The assembled included mem-bers of the Costello and Cosgrave families, past and present mem-bers of the judiciary, the Bar of Ireland, the Oireachtas and the four Dublin local authorities.

They gathered to hear an ad-dress by Dr David McCullagh, RTÉ journalist and author of ‘The Re-luctant Taoiseach: A Biography of John A Costello’.

Organiser Cllr Barry Ward welcomed people to the event by commenting on how John A Costello is not as well remem-bered as he should be, despite his significant achievements and

contributions to political and le-gal life.

Mr McCullagh was then in-

troduced by Cllr Cormac Devlin, cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, which

sponsored the event along with the Bar Council of Ireland.

Mr McCullagh gave an en-tertaining and informative talk in which he referred to John A Costello’s varied interests, in-cluding politics, the law, golf and his family.

He described the former Tao-iseach and Attorney General as an unassuming, modest, extraor-dinarily kind — even to his oppo-nents — and generous man.

He noted that on Costello’s election as Taoiseach that he “re-ally, genuinely didn’t want the job”.

Although financial reasons are often mentioned, the truth — as Costello revealed in a letter to his son, Declan — was based on his fear that he would be a flop and would discredit the new govern-ment.

In concluding, Mr McCullagh drew parallels between the inter-party government and the pres-ent administration.

He noted that Costello’s great-est contribution was, perhaps, the skill with which he kept his two coalitions together.

John A Costello, a successful barrister and one of the first le-gal advisors to the newly formed Irish Free State, served as Attor-ney General to W T Cosgrave from 1926 to 1932.

He was Taoiseach from 1948 to 1951 and 1954 to 1957 as the leader of Ireland’s first inter-par-

ty government.Significantly, he was respon-

sible for declaring Ireland a Re-public in 1948.

He is buried with his wife and son in Deansgrange Cemetery in Blackrock.

The event ws also attended by local Fine Gael TD, Josepha Madi-gan, and Cllr Barry Ward.

The Costello Commemoration is a free, non-political event. Plans are already being hatched for next year’s event to be held in June.

Double milestone for Dublin AirportDUBLIN Airport’s support and involvement with local schools achieved a notable double milestone recently with two significant celebrations.

The airport marked 20 years of participation in the Junior Achievement programme while also marking 10 years of partner-ship with St Finian’s Community College as part of the Business in the Community Initiative.

Over the past school year, vol-unteers from the airport have once again been working with students in primary and second-ary schools across the north Dub-lin area.

The aim of the two volunteer programmes is to bridge the gap between school life and the work-ing world while offering students the chance to learn about differ-ent industries and careers.

Both programmes emphasise interview techniques and CV writ-ing skills for older students while younger classes participate in fun and engaging lessons that stress the value of gaining an education and staying in school.

Speaking about the relation-ship between Dublin Airport and St Finian’s, Aisling Fleming of Business in the Community

said the partnership is one of he organisation’s strongest with students consistently show-ing a high level of engagement thanks primarily to the friendly and accommodating staff at the airport.

Damien Henehan, of Ju-nior Achievement Ireland, also praised the airport volunteers who have made a real and lasting difference to countless students in in local communities over the last two decades.

EDUCATionTeachers lift the lid on those end-of-term giftsSOAP sets, dead plants, a light up fairy statue and a turkey baster! These are just some of the answers given by teachers in Ireland when asked what gifts that they’d been given by parents at the end of the school year.

The answers appeared in two surveys carried out by Aldi to mark the launch of the German retailer’s ‘Thank You Teacher’ flowers, which went on sale last Thursday (June 23).

The surveys - one for parents and one for teachers – were cre-ated to find out what gifts teach-ers give and receive at the end of the school year, and there’s some hilarious results!

While some teachers exercised caution and said that “there is no such thing as a bad gift” many de-cided to let loose with a list of odd presents they’ve received from parents in the past.

These include a school bus or-

nament, an egg cup, plastic flow-ers, fridge magnets, deodorant, half-used toiletries, out of date sweets, a resealed tin of biscuits, and a previously worn gold sequin boob tube top.

A total of 65 per cent of teach-ers then admitted to re-gifting the presents from parents and giving them to someone else.

Over 90 per cent of parents said they always give their child’s teacher a gift at the end of the school year, but only 24 per cent of teachers surveyed said they ex-pect gifts on the last day.

Most parents admitted not wanting to break the bank when purchasing a gift, with 87 per cent saying they would not spend more than €20 on a gift if they were to buy one, and 32 per cent say they have previously given their child’s teacher something that they al-ready had lying around the house that they didn’t want anymore.

of the school year would be, the majority of teachers surveyed said that it is always helpful when the parents in the class club together and purchase a gift voucher for them.

However, only 39 per cent of parents said that they had previ-ously given their child’s teacher money or a gift card.

The surveys were carried out across 1,000 parents and teach-ers working in Ireland via a Sur-veyMonkey survey commissioned by Aldi and communicated on Aldi Ireland’s Facebook and Twitter ac-counts.

FORD has introduced a new word to the motoring vocabu-lary, Vignale.

Italian Afredo Vignale estab-lished a coach building company in Turin in 1948 and that com-pany was eventually sold to Ford in 1973, but they didn’t use the name until now.

Ford are using Vignale to describe premium versions of their cars. Last week I drove the Mondeo Vignale and in the com-ing years we will see Vignale ver-sions of the S-Max and Kuga and maybe a few more models from Ford.

It has been suggested that Ford want to grab a piece of the ‘pre-mium pie’ from the likes of Audi,

BMW and Mercedes. But all that luxury comes at a hefty price, with prices starting at €43,900. With a few extras thrown in, the price of my automatic 2.0 litre diesel test model climbed to 50k.

Vignale is to Ford’s premium offering what RS is to its per-formance cars. I drove a brown coloured version which attracted compliments from almost all of the people I spoke to. It’s impos-sible to please everybody, but nearly all thought that the brown looked the part. The official col-our was Vignale Nocciola and it got some envious glances, not from boy racers this time, but from mature adults.

and a switch to Spain meant we had to wait over a year for the new car. It was worth the wait, but some people felt that the new VW Passat, which arrived around the same time, was even

more stylish. However, the ar-rival of the Vignale version of the Mondeo has definitely put Ford ahead again.

Externally the main change from the regular Mondeo is the

honeycomb grille that will be part of the Vignale signature. There is also a lot more chrome around the fog lights and at the back.

Inside there is a lot of leather on the seats and dash area. Back seat travellers can leave down an arm-rest with cup holders. My back passengers told me that it was a very relaxing car to travel in. Maybe it had something to do with the inflatable seat belts, which cost an extra €200. On the road the Vignale is just a lit-tle smoother than the regular Mondeo. I suppose the fact that it was automatic added to the luxurious feel.

I always feel very comfort-able in a Ford, no matter which car it is. The dials on the dash are user friendly and so easy to

operate. However, I wasn’t mad about the electronic handbrake, which didn’t release automati-cally when I attempted to drive off. And yes, I did have the seat belt fastened!

It’s luxurious, but you pay a lot of money for that extra comfort with prices starting at almost €44,000. You could buy two of Ford’s popular Focus cars for that money. Still it’s classy to look at and to travel in. I had lots of extras like cruise control and plenty of parking sensors.

I got a puncture and the spare looked like a full-size, but when I went to get it repaired the helpful young man in Thorntons in Blue-bell he said that it was a 15-inch spare not a full-size 18-inch. Still, an almost full-size spare wheel for only €35 is good value.

The ‘Liquid Flow’ design theme of Baleno evokes an energetic mass of liquid in motion, using curving lines, expressive sur-faces and a low and wide silhou-ette helps underline a strong and compelling look.

Seen from the front the body opens outward from the cabin. From the side, character lines create flowing highlights and the forward sloping rear hatch sug-gests the moving forward of dy-namic energy. This sophisticated design helps create the impres-sion of power and elegance.

The instrument panel is also characterised by the ‘Liquid Flow’ theme with its curving lines and silver accents together with reddish-amber illuminations that underline the cabin’s sense of style.

This new platform targets the reduction of weight as well as further increased rigidity. For the new Baleno, body rigidity has been enhanced by approximately 10 per cent and with the use of a new smoother shaped structure the total vehicle weight has been reduced by around 15 per cent.

The body embodies Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technol-ogy (TECT) concept for occupant protecting impact absorption and low weight. Extensive use of ultra high tensile steel helps to make

the new Baleno outstandingly crashworthy and fuel efficient.

The lightweight highly rigid body structure has been achieved by extensive use of 980MPa and 780MPa grade steel sheeting. The result of this is a ‘Body In White’ basic shell structure weight of 196kg which is the lightest in the ‘B’ segment Hatchback class. Su-zuki has thus beaten the 200kg mark which was long seen in the industry as impossible to attain.

The body frame has smooth

curving lines with fewer joints that enable reductions in re-quired reinforcements. This structure is not only lighter but disperses collision force energy more efficiently and improves overall crash safety. This high level of weight reduction has only been made possible by analysing the car as a whole, not by simply analysing individual parts. Tech-nologies to reduce weight have been applied to the vehicle body as well as mechanical parts in-

cluding the doors, seats, interior parts, suspension, engine and brakes.

Depending on variant and transmission, kerb weight ranges from 935kg to 980kg making it the lightest ‘B’ segment hatch-back amongst its competitors – in one case by more than 200kg.

Thanks to this new platform strategy and development of the body shape, the Baleno is also the most aerodynamic car that Suzuki has ever produced with a drag coefficient of just 0.299.

Standard equipment for all Baleno models in the range is comprehensive and the SZ-T model (available with 1.0-litre Boosterjet) includes six airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, HID head-lights, air conditioning, satellite navigation, DAB Radio with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, rear privacy glass and front electric windows.

SZ5 (Boosterjet and SHVS model) adds automatic climate control, rear electric windows, 4.2 inch central colour trip dis-play, and LED rear lights.

Grip Control, patented by the PSA Group and now standard on the new 2008 GT Line, broadens the scope of the 2008 thanks to an adapted traction system in low grip conditions. Grip Control optimises traction according to the terrain by acting on the front wheels. The system works hand-in-hand with a generous 16cm ground clearance and combined with All-Season

Goodyear Vector tyres, it has genu-ine versatility in all weather condi-tions and in snow, mud or sand.

New colour options include Ul-timate Red, first seen on the new Peugeot 308 GTi and Emerald Crystal. Active City Brake and Park Assist are also now available as op-tions. Dealers focus on shifting used cars

and set the industry on course for the best registration numbers in over seven years.

“While many manufacturers have started their 162 campaign offer-ings early, the industry is still open for business on new as well as used cars in the remaining weeks of the 161 period so consumers can take advantage of June deals.”

SIMI director general Alan Nolan was speaking after official statistics released by the society recently show that new car registrations for the month of May were down six per cent (6,532) compared to May 2015 (6,919), while total new car sales are up 23 per cent (99,740) on the same period last year (80,889).

Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) are currently up eight per cent (1,839) on May 2015 (1,705) and year to date are up 27 per cent (17,561) overall. Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations are also up 38 per cent for the month of May 2016 (307) compared to the same month last year (222), and are up 53 per cent year to date.

Mr Nolan said: “After three years of sustained growth year on year,

the industry took a pause for breath in May this year.

“The new shape of seasonality in the industry is settling in with the sector now beginning to turn its focus on the 162 period for new car sales.

“Since the introduction of the dual registration plate system, the percentage of new car registrations occurring in the second half of the year has been increasing year on year from 14 per cent in 2011 to 34 per cent last year.

“This new shape to the year does give dealers a better opportunity to focus on used car sales at this stage in the year to help clear the decks in anticipation of the next key sales period for new cars. The overall reg-istration numbers are very strong

THE problem with first impres-sions, they say, is that you only get to make one. Most people know this of course, which is why it never fails to surprise me that day after day I get CVs into my inbox that have not been given the due care required to make a positive im-pact and successfully navigate this important first hurdle in a job application.

There are a growing number of work opportunities available to peo-ple across the county and country. However, people must be prepared in order to maximise their chances of realising those opportunities. Having a well put together, coherent and persuasive CV is an essential part of that preparation.

US studies have shown that re-cruiters spend on average six sec-onds on a CV before they decide whether to keep reading or not.

I can’t say I discard someone that quickly, but any employer will wonder why they should spend their time on someone who can’t be both-ered spending an hour or so putting together a decent CV.

A CV, like a good handshake, can say a lot about a person. If a candi-date isn’t taking the time to create a carefully thought out CV, then they are doing themselves a disservice and running the risk they will end up in the trash folder.

Below I outline three steps im-portant to a good CV. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but can be considered ‘CV 101’. These steps will allow you to get past the employer’s first glance and put you in serious contention for the job you are ap-plying for.

NO SPELLING MISTAKES: All pro-grammes have a spell check option. It is not an option to fail to make use of it. Some recruiters and employers will refuse to respond to CVs with spelling mistakes as it shows a com-plete lack of attention on the part of the applicant. Don’t be discounted by failing to click a button.

BE RELEVANT: Your CV should be concise and should clearly em-phasise the experience that makes you suitable for the particular job you are applying for. Don’t just write down everything you have done, but succinctly lay out the areas of experience that are a match for each job.

STAND OUT: Don’t just list the du-ties you performed in previous em-ployments - outline your achieve-ments. Your CV should portray a

candidate who sought and gained experience and who made a serious contribution. Years of service is not enough to convince employers of your suitability. Many people, who have been working for decades, simply turn up and switch off, hid-ing in the long grass and never

doing more than is required (and sometimes less!).

Use your CV to outline projects taken on, sales targets exceeded or filing systems modernised. No one will thank you for being mod-est and employers will appreciate a candidate who can take on new challenges and succeed.

There is no excuse for not having a good CV. There are ample online resources available to assist and most recruiters will work with you to ensure your CV is up to scratch.

An employer’s time is limited, so make sure your CV gives them food for thought and not cause for con-cern. Don’t waste your opportunity to make a good first impression.

free films at ifitHis saturday, July 2, the irish film institute(ifi) will throw open its doors in temple Bar for a day of free films, including exclusive previews, old favourites, cult classics and archive films.they will also be offering ifi membershipdiscounts, competitions and a chance to glimpse behind the scenes at the ifi with projection booth tours and talks from the ifiirish film archive staff.

Main Street, Rathfarnham, c. 1910. The enterprising salesman advertises his services on the back of his van. The village at the ‘Gateway to the Dublin Mountains’ was well known for its educational establishments including the Jesuit house of studies at Rathfarnham Castle, St Columba’s College and the Loreto Abbey.
