What I love about southland Boys’ high school is that as a whanau we work things through together and help each other out. There is a sense of belonging and an aspect of brotherhood that is special to our school. By ourselves we can’t do much, but together we can move forward and really see great things happen in this school. I feel really lucky to have been a part of southland Boys’ high school and the tradition it holds.

Southland Boys’ high School is a school that has been acknowledged nationally for its successes in

I believe that the academic, sporting and cultural opportunities I’ve had at Southland Boys’ are unsurpassed by any other school in New Zealand. During my time at Southland Boys’, I truly believe that I have been learning not for school, but for life, as I have been encouraged and helped by passionate teachers to succeed in my academic, sporting and cultural pursuits. I believe that the lessons that I have learnt at this school have a deeper meaning than just about knowledge. Every pupil is learning the key life lessons and skills to be a better man later in life, so we can take on the world.

There is an image in the public that in all boys’ schools there are lots of fights and bullying, but I quickly learned that at Southland Boys’ this is not the case, as there is a positive environment and culture where “older looks after younger”.

I am halfway through my schooling at Southland Boys’ High School. Having come from a small country school, the transition has been an easy and enjoyable experience. I have been presented with many opportunities such as debating, rugby, student council, courses in art, and my favourite, music.

I play the sax and guitar and have recently joined the ukulele group. We also entered our taiko drum team into the Chamber of Music competition and were awarded a trophy for our original composition.

Music has enriched my life and given me a wide and challenging interest. Science has also hugely influenced my life here and I am at present working on an idea for the science fair with the support of my Science teacher, who has inspired me to consider taking science further as a career.

When I first started at Boys’ High I was nervous until I was introduced to my teacher. Our teachers help us to set goals and work towards achieving them. In all of our classes, we have specific teaching for literacy to help us learn better in all our subjects. I enjoy all the sports available at SBHS and I am proud to be part of the Pasifika and Kapa Haka groups.

Southland Boys’ High School has given me so many opportunities from sporting skills to academic skills. When I came to SBHS in 2010, I only cared about sport and how long it was till lunchtime, but now, I pay a lot of attention to schoolwork and academic achievement.

I play rugby and hockey. In July, we are facing Balmacewan in an interschool, which consists of rugby, soccer, basketball and hockey. That is giving about 50 people sporting opportunities. At SBHS, there are also many leadership opportunities from leading your class to leading the school.

At SBHS we are encouraged to live by our school values. They are compassion, respect, responsibility, service, honesty and perseverance. I think these are a good way to help us be good men later on in life.

Southland Boys’ High School is a great school. The teachers are nice and the subjects and activities are fantastic!

When I first came to Southland Boys’ I was really nervous, but the teachers and friends I made helped me to settle in. Once you’re settled in there’s plenty to do. I really enjoy my subjects, especially Literacy – which is a part of every subject and science which we do in the lab, like real scientists!

I am involved in the Pasifika group. We learn haka and dances to perform. At the moment we’re practising for the Pasifika Festival. I’m also looking forward to getting my entry into the Science Fair.

It’s just the best place to be!

Southland Boys’ High School supports a wide range of career paths and prepares students for life after they leave school. The staff is focused on turning boys into men and promoting individuality, not producing “clones”.

The school recognizes all forms of achievement. It is not just about getting good grades or winning rugby games, it is about being yourself and being the best that you can be. The school regularly holds assemblies to congratulate students on their achievements and give them a chance to showcase their talents.

The school’s senior management team understands how boys work and implements strategies to nurture potential, deal with important issues and create a safe environment for everyone.

I am a very busy person and being a student at Boys’ High has taught me how to manage my time and make good choices. I play water polo and basketball, have a part time job, and am learning how to fly at Southern Wings Aviation College. I hope to become an airline pilot and Southland Boys’ is paving the way for my success by extending me academically.

When looking for a high school, there was only one choice for my parents and me – Southland Boys’ High School. Having a proud family heritage of family members attending SBHS, it seemed like the best choice. Having been here for four years, I can see why my parents chose it. Whether it’s in the classroom or on the sports field, SBHS is the school of choice for high achievers. It’s where you get the best out of yourself. SBHS has given me a wide range of opportunities with my cycling, while still supporting me to maintain my academic agenda.

Boys’ High has amazing staff who are all working to get the best out of you in all areas. As long as you are willing to try, Southland Boys’ is willing to give.

Southland Boys’ High School is a wonderful place. There are so many opportunities. At SBHS we have a long history of cultural and sporting achievements and high achievers. Just some of the opportunities I’ve had are: Milo Cricket Team, SBHS Football, Year 7 Speech Competitions, SouthSpell, Year 7 Cross Country, Southland Athletics, Year 7 & 8 Class Representative, a Leadership Course in Dunedin and being an SBHS Ambassador.

Last year at Prize-giving, I was lucky enough to win the Alex Derbie Speech Cup and the Best All Round Sports’ Cup. I was awarded my Colours for leadership and sports.

Boys’ High is an all-round great place to be and is full of opportunities.

I believe that in every sense southland Boys’ high school is turning boys to men.

I have had great academic opportunities during my time at SBHS as our teachers teach to boys’ needs and strive to push every kid to achieve their own excellence. There is a real sense that the teachers will give anything for you to succeed academically. Furthermore, I have had great opportunities in the arts through Shakespeare competitions, productions and Japanese speech competitions. One of the main reasons why I initially wanted to go to this school as a youngster was because of the sporting opportunities. I have not been disappointed, as I have had a high quality of coaching and I have been on many tournaments and experienced the proud, positive and traditional Southland Boys’ High School sporting culture. The leadership and mentoring roles through all the year levels at Southland Boys’ High School have also taught me a wide range of life lessons and skills. These opportunities include: Y7 and 8 Class Reps, Peer Mentoring, Peer Support, the Student Council, House Captains and Prefects. At Southland Boys’ every student is taught to strive for success and success is regularly acknowledged, rewarded and celebrated.

Southland Boys’ High School is a great school to go to because the teachers are friendly and approachable. Fellow students are easy to get along with and will be friends for life.

When I first came to SBHS, I thought everything would be about sports. Even though I love sports, it turned out SBHS is very academic as well, and as our motto goes - Not for school but for life we are learning.

Another great thing about SBHS is getting to try all subjects in year 7&8 before you choose in Year 9. Some of the great events I have been on are camping at Omaui and Deep Cove and snowboarding at Coronet Peak.

I really think you should consider coming to Southland Boys’ High School, as I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
