In last month’s newsletter I omitted Nantwich from the list of Shows – apologies. For those who wish to exhibit or visit, the show will be held on 25 th July. Details of the National Show are inside, including competitions. 97 stalls plus 7 calf stalls have been booked, and animal details are now being finalised. It should be another great display of South Devon cattle, and a great opportunity for publicity.

If you have not already read about it in the press, showing will become a bit more complicated after 1st July as a result of tightening TB controls in England, specifically with the requirement to pre-movement test animals that stay overnight at shows. A pity that more measures to prevent the spread of the disease are not also being implemented, as the disease continues to advance north and eastwards. The recent Midland Club Sale at Stratford was very encouraging, with a good line-up of bulls all of which sold, and a strong trade in heifers. Another six new members are joining on the back of the Sale. Wherever you sell breeding cattle, it is most important to offer quality – anything else is a poor reflection of what the breed can do. A new Society Sale venue will be tried in November at Skipton, to provide an opportunity for members in the northern region to bring cattle to, and buy from, a fully inspected Sale, and with the same health requirements as other Society Sales. It will be held as part of a multi-breed sale with the Beef Shorthorns, who will have the support of Morrisons Supermarkets. Of course the South Devon is a breed eligible for the same beef scheme, which is most helpful! If you have not ‘logged on’ recently, have a look at the Society’s revamped website. There is still some work to be done with some of the finer detail, but it does give a fresh lively impression. Thanks to our designer, Alan Peedle. Thank you to those who have replied to update their membership details. We are still willing to hear from you if you would prefer NOT to receive newsletters and catalogues by post – our database is being amended. We look forward to seeing you at forthcoming shows and events – please come and see us, and collect your copy of the new Journal. With my best wishes Caroline

DAVID PHILLIPS MEMORIAL COMPETITION

With the Show season about to start, this year’s David Phillips Memorial Competition is launched to encourage youngsters into the show-ring.

Summer agricultural shows with individual South Devon classes will qualify for the Competition. A minimum of two shows must be entered by each entrant.

Page 8: South Devons Newsletter May 2012

8

There will be no maximum to the number of shows entered, and the two highest-scoring shows will count towards final points.

Members, and relatives or employees of members, aged between 16 and 25 on the dates of their first and last shows, will be eligible to enter the Competition. Cattle shown need not be the property of the Exhibitor, but must be prepared for the Show by the Exhibitor.

Entrants and exhibitors are invited to apply for Young Exhibitor cards from the SDHBS office in good time before shows are held, which must be handed to the South Devon judge of the classes before judging begins. The entrant should identify in which class he/she should be judged.

The judge will mark the Exhibitor with points out of 10, in each of three sections: Exhibitor’s personal presentation; presentation of animal; competence in handling of animal. The judge will be encouraged to ask pertinent questions of the entrants.

The judge will be responsible for returning the completed cards to the SDHBS office as soon as possible after the show, and in any case by 31st December.

The Young Exhibitor’s two highest-scoring shows will count towards the winning prize of £200, to be presented at the AGM following the year in which the cattle were shown, together with a Trophy. In the event of a tie, the prize money will be divided equally between the winners.

The Competition may be held for as many years as the David Phillips Memorial Fund allows. It may not be won by any one individual more than once.

RACE FOR LIFE!

Thank you to those who have so far sponsored Liz and her daughter Katie to for the Race for Life on Sunday 22nd July at Westpoint. They are taking part to represent Society members and to raise lots of money for Cancer Research UK. If you would like to sponsor them please send your cheque payable to SDHBS, noting that it is for the Race for Life, to the SDHBS office. Thank you!

per person. Bookings are being taken by Liz and Debbie. Awards will be made after the Supper. Show tickets The Three Counties Show is very kindly offering South Devon Society members ‘2 for 1’ tickets to the Show, if purchased prior to the Show, which is a considerable saving and might entice you to join us at the Society Supper as well as for the judging. To book your tickets please contact the Show on 01684 584924. Young Handler Competitions As well as the Society’s Young Handler Competition, sponsored by Towergate Farm Insurance, the Three Counties hold a number of competitions on Saturday and Sunday, for different ages and with different judges. With such a strong presence of South Devons it would be good experience and good publicity to encourage entrants to these as well. Entries are now invited for the Towergate competition – please use the form at the back of this newsletter. Photographic Competition If you have a photograph featuring at least one South Devon, you might like to enter it in the Competition being run in the Society marquee at the Show, which is kindly being judged by our Sale Photographer, Mr Eric Beard. The classes are: 1 Best South Devon photo taken at a Show; colour or

restricted to South Devon members, with a maximum of two per entrant per class. Judging will take place on Friday 15th June, and prizes awarded at the Society Supper that evening. Please don’t forget to notify which class you are entering! The winning photograph from each class category will be published in the next Society calendar, and the overall winner will receive a voucher for a photo-book. Cake Competition If you are better at baking than you are at taking a photograph then the Best Cake Competition might be for you. There will be two classes – Best Sponge, and Best Fruit Cake. Judging will take place on Friday morning, 15th June, and the winner of each class will receive his/her prize at the Society Supper on Friday evening. Cakes entered in the competition will be served with tea/coffee in the marquee during the Show. Please mark entries and tins carefully with your name and the class you are entering. If you would like to bring a cake but not enter the competition we would happily make it available to hungry visitors to the marquee! What’s On Information Before the Show a pamphlet will be produced in the office and made available to members and visitors detailing the events during the Show, naming the exhibitors, and advertising our Sponsors.

NBA BEEF EXPO Three Counties Showground

24th May 2012 This year’s Beef Expo is being held at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, with the main event on Thursday 24th May. The previous afternoon there will be various ‘warm-up’ events,

Page 12: South Devons Newsletter May 2012

12

including farm visits and the opportunity to see demonstration cattle from 4.30 pm. The Society’s stand, with five pens of both pedigree and commercial cattle, will be set up on Wednesday afternoon. Thank you to all those who are helping, and please come and support what promises to be a very informative Expo. It is always an excellent opportunity for breed promotion.

ENHANCEMENT OF SOCIETY’S PERFORMANCE

RECORDING INCENTIVE

When you read this, installation of the new Breedplan software in the office will be underway and hopefully there will be no more than a minimum disruption to services during this time! This is an update of almost our entire administrative process, from registrations and notifications, to DNA recording, member services, invoicing, and performance recording. Initial analysis of recent Society Sales shows that there is generally a significant premium payable for bulls that are performance recorded – over £500 per bull at most Sales. Obviously there will be exceptions to the rule, but figures are an important part of a buyer’s bull selection criteria. Further details of the analysis will be given in a following newsletter. The Breed Improvement Committee have recently met, and have discussed further ways in which to enhance both the efficiency and take-up of performance recording. If you wish to know more at any time about Breedplan recording, whether you are already recording or would be interested in starting, your first point of call is the SDHBS office.

Page 13: South Devons Newsletter May 2012

13

One recent measure taken by Council to increase the level of Breedplan performance recording is to give a two year period of free weight recording for new members who record at least birth weight and 200 day weight. Existing members who wish to start recording are entitled to a year’s benefits without the herd charge of £120 being levied; and there is an additional financial incentive to scan for muscle area and fat depth. For more information please refer to Caroline. Once the new software is fully operational there will be more news about how members will benefit from its new efficiencies!

CARCASE DATA You can help to increase our bank of technical data, and thus provide valuable statistical information to promote the breed to the commercial producer by giving us feedback about animals sent to slaughter. This can simply be a copy of the kill-sheet giving details of weights and grades. Of course, if the animals were registered by you as pedigree, and are under 30 months of age at slaughter, you may claim back a credit of the registration fee when you send proof of slaughter. As a further incentive, we shall be running a monthly draw of those who participate in sending us kill-sheet data, with a prize each month.

CHANGES TO TB RULES IN ENGLAND AS OF 1ST JULY 2012

The following information has been produced by the NBA following DEFRA’s announcements to rule changes as of 1st July – please take careful note: 1 Reduction in compensation for OVERDUE tests

• Compensation cuts will be made on a sliding scale, starting when tests are more than 60 days overdue: 61-90 days overdue, 25% reduction in compensation; 91-180 days overdue, 50% reduction in compensation; over 180 days, 95% reduction in compensation

• Allowances will be made for ‘exceptional cases’ where a delay is ‘justifiable or unavoidable’

• There will be 21 days to appeal a decision to a cut in compensation

• Tests that were more than 60 days overdue on 1st July will NOT be affected, and the penalties start 60 days after that date

• This should not affect ‘intelligent testing’, and you can continue to discuss rearranging routine test dates with your local Animal Health office who can take into account particular circumstances

2 New compensation categories for young pedigree beef animals

• There will be a new compensation category for pedigree beef animals aged under six months

3 No pedigree compensation for non-pedigree cattle

• Pedigree compensation will not be paid unless the owner of the animal has a full pedigree certificate for that animal

• There will be no pedigree payment for steers; pedigree animals must have ‘breeding potential’. (This has been the practice in any case within the Society as we cannot register pedigree male calves that have been castrated)

4 Collection of sales data for calculation of average values

• This is confirmed as: from the 21st of one month to the 20th of the next for non-pedigree; and six months for pedigree (although it remains unclear as to the particular sources of this data)

5 Cattle passports

• Passports must be presented before the reactor goes for slaughter unless ‘outside the farmer’s control’

6 Removal of 30-day residency exemption for Pre Movement Testing (PMT)

• PMT remains valid for 60 days, with cattle being moved multiple times during that period

• However, removal of the 30-day residency exemption for cattle who were not resident on a holding for more than 30 days means cattle can no longer move after 60 days without being retested

7 PMT required for ‘high risk’ herds housing cattle at agricultural shows

• ‘High risk’ is defined as herds in one or two year testing areas; ‘low risk’ as herds in four year testing areas

• Cattle that are resident at shows for more than 24 hours and/or are kept inside at the showground must be Pre Movement Tested if from one or two year testing areas

8 PMT required for cattle moving from a Sole Occupancy Authority (SOA) in a ‘high risk’ area to a ‘low risk’ area

• Movements from ‘high’ to ‘low’ risk will need to be Pre Movement Tested.

• Movements within same risk areas will not be affected

9 Removal of Cattle Tracing System (CTS) links between holdings in ‘high’ and ‘low’ risk areas

• No new CTS links will be issued and no such existing links will be renewed between holdings in ‘high’ and ‘low’ risk areas

• Existing CTS links in ‘high’ and ‘low’ risk areas that currently do not have an expiry date will be phased out

10 Removal of SOAs

• No new SOAs will be approved, irrespective of testing area

• No new premises will be approved for existing SOAs

• Existing SOAs will continue subject to (8) above

AND FINALLY …

A waiter brought a customer the lobster which he had ordered. But it only had one claw. The customer noticed this and asked where the other claw was. The waiter had to think quickly. ‘When they arrived this morning they were still alive, and two of them started fighting, and this one lost a claw in the fight.” “Okay,” said the customer. “Then bring me the winner.”
