NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2012

CONTENTS: Linda’s Trophy 12 Spring Show & Sale Schedule 3 Wadebridge Calf Show results 9 DNA testing for myostatin 6 Error – Smithfield results 9 Compensation for TB 7 Diary 10 New Breedplan Sire Summary 8 Cattle for Sale 11 Dear Member, A very happy, peaceful, and healthy New Year to you all! This is rather an abbreviated newsletter, but there are still matters of interest inside, and the start of what will undoubtedly be another busy year for the breed. Beef prices are forecast to stay strong during 2012, and the pedigree sector – at the top of the beef production ‘pyramid’ – should reflect the higher prices. Commercial and retail interest in native breeds shows no sign of waning, although local factors and preferences bear an influence wherever you might be. I am sure you will wish to share our congratulations to Messrs Kivells, who have been a tremendous supporter of the breed for the last decade, in their new position as auctioneers at Exeter Livestock Centre. Their first sale, which will be mainly of store cattle, will take place in April, and no doubt South Devons will find a good trade with Kivells’ support. Liz is still off work, mending her broken ankle, and we hope to see her fully fit and back at her desk in a few weeks’ time. In the meantime, please bear with

us, particularly with registration work, but if you have an urgent need to register any animals please let us know and we will do what we can. Debbie is doing a great job manning the office in the absence of Liz and I, but we are all looking forward to a resumption of normality! I am also still mending, and awaiting more hospital appointments, and my laptop is my lifeline at home (as is my hot water bottle). If you need to contact me, the fastest way is via e-mail – [email protected]. During this time when we are short-staffed in the office, there will continue to be unavoidable periods of time when the office is manned by an answerphone only. If this is the case when you telephone, please leave a message and we will come back to you. My husband, Keith, is our temporary helper – stuffing envelopes, collating Breedplan reports, running up and down stairs, etc, and you might even find him soon on the end of the South Devon telephone, taking messages. If you have any further advertisements or other material for the Journal please would you let me have the information as soon as possible now, and this will be the final reminder. Inside is the Schedule for the Spring Show & Sale. The deadline for receipt of entries is Friday 10th February. Please note the new health requirements as detailed in recent newsletters. If you wish for further clarification please let me know. A new Breedplan group evaluation has been completed, and performance recorders will receive herd reports with this newsletter. There is also information inside relating to comparative growth over the last 20 years. You may also be interested to see the latest tally of DNA results for myostatin typing. With my best wishes Caroline

If you have any ideas for sponsorship please would you either let Caroline or Bob Bostelmann know. Other members of the Group who would be pleased to hear from you are Mark Rushbrooke, Richard Hartshorn, Sally Smallcombe, and Diane Sugden. * Bull; Heifer; Steer ** Figures taken from January Breedplan evaluation Looking at this brief analysis, it is interesting to note the increase in weight gain over the years, particularly for 200 and 400 day weights, whereas the birth weights have changed little. Data for the 600 day weights is more limited.

LINDA TURPIE ROUNSEVELL MEMORIAL AWARD You still have time to make a nomination for this year’s award of the Linda Turpie Rounsevell Memorial Trophy. The Trophy is a sketch of one of the Highgate herd dams with her calf, and was produced by renowned South-West artist, Xanthe Moseley. Roger Rundle is the current recipient of the award. You may nominate any member or non-member, and the nominations will be judged according to the greatest contribution to promotional work during 2011. The winner will retain the Trophy for one year and will receive a framed print to keep. Please would you complete the form enclosed with the December newsletter, and return it to the Society office by 27th January. The judges will be Ian Rounsevell, Caroline Poultney (Secretary) and Roger Clemens (President) and the winner will be announced at the AGM.

AND FINALLY …

Why is that whenever something is transported by car, it's called a “shipment”, but when something is transported by ship, it's called “cargo”? How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb? Two. One to change it, and another two change it right back again.
