the AGM are listed within, and I must tender my apology to David & Barbara Bowley for mistakenly allocating their award of the Cecil Harvey Shield for BEST HERD OF COWS in last year’s Herd Competition to another breeder. The meeting unanimously voted Roger Clemens to be the new Society President, and I wish Roger and Rose much enjoyment in travelling around the country to shows and events as the breed’s principal Ambassador during the next 12 months. Following the AGM was the very successful Auction of Promises. John Wakeham once again gave an excellent performance, enticing members with banter and ‘hard sell’ tactics to extract every last penny for this year’s project – the publication of a book of memorabilia compiled by Colin Pearse. The total raised was £5,200.25, seventy-five per cent of which will go towards the book’s publication. Thank you to all who generously gave gifts and promises, and to all who bid and bought. The transaction list is enclosed. Entries for the Midland Club Sale have now closed and the catalogue will be put together in the next few days. Entries for the National Show at Norfolk are about to close – the final deadline is 8th April! Sponsorship is being collected in Region 5, and all members in that region are encouraged by their Chairman, Mike Kettlewell, to do what they can to tap into any funds from their suppliers. Mike has very generously given a personal donation of £250. Thanks to Clive Salmon and Andrew Foulds for already raising £3,000 in sponsorship – no mean feat! The Poll Group – a loosely defined term for anyone interested in polling in the breed – are very kindly invited by Hadley Farms to see their Knightcote herd at Chesterton Fields Farm, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, on Tuesday 10th May. A reply slip is at the back of this newsletter if you would like to attend. Finally, my thanks to all who contributed to the success of last week’s breed events – too many to mention all of you – but especially Messrs Kivells, our Inspector, and our team of stewards. Significant progress has been made in terms of breed promotion! Caroline

SPRING SHOW & SALE

Exeter Livestock Centre 23rd March

Judge Hugh Lello MBE from Camborne in Cornwall was faced with seven strong bull classes, from which he selected his champion from the Mutterton herd near Cullompton, Devon, bred by A H & E M Bartley. X AI Mutterton Ashton Bitter is by polled bull Z Shorland Ashley and is out of a homebred cow by Northwick General 8. With a Beef Index in the top 5% and a Suckler Replacement Index in the top 1% of the breed, the bull also pleased the judge in the performance competition, winning the Thornton Cup. In the Sale Ring the judge’s decision was firmly vindicated with some red-hot bidding which took the sale to £11,025 and the hammer finally falling to A & C Farms from Langham in Rutland. Reserve male champion was Peter Rowe’s Trewint Magnetto 4, from Menheniot in Cornwall. By Trewint Magnetto and out of Trewint Suffragette 17, this well-fleshed strong bull was a clear winner in his class. He sold to Mrs A Daniels from Aveton Gifford, Kingsbridge, Devon for £7,875, with his two fellow consignees from the same herd achieving £10,080 between them. Second highest priced bull was a smart polled bull from Mr T H E Laity, Z Polkinghorne Genpro, with a pedigree going back to Z Cilgwrrwg Illya and AI Z Countisbury Cracker 2. He sold to R R B & S J Harvey from Ermington, Devon for £8,505. Mr Laity’s second bull, Z Polkinghorne Dazzler by the same sire sold for £6,300 to Mr T J Warhurst from Sutton-under-Brailes, Banbury, Oxfordshire.

Third highest bull was Mr W H D Scott’s scurred bull, X Grove Brutus 113 by AI Z Highgate Hanover 2 which sold to W J Perkins & Sons from Coryton in Devon for £8,400. In the female judging section, champion female was Mr W H D Scott’s AI Grove Erica 25, a 2 year old bulling heifer by Trevowah Joe Louis 11. Reserve champion was a polled bulling heifer by Stretchford Dynamic 4 from R J & C J Edwards - Z Colcharton Darling 225. The winning pair of females was from A L Pascoe’s herd from Hayle in Cornwall. Top priced female was Hawkley Dairymaid 34 from R J & S E Whitcombe, Liss, Hampshire, who sold to Church Farm Publow LLP, Pensford, Bristol for £1785. Averages: 38 bulls, average £4020. 5 halter broken bulling heifers, average £1617. 14 non halter broken heifers, average £986 THE SHOW BULLS Class 1a 1st W H D Scott X GROVE BRUTUS 113 2nd J G Williams & Son HOPTON MAXIMUS 2 3rd B G & J Z A Dart AI WOODHAYES ILLYA 15 Class 1b 1st M A & C Sandbach & Son PERLEES HANNIBAL 2nd R J & C J Edwards Z COLCHARTON MAJOR 1 3rd T H E Laity Z POLKINGHORNE DAZZLER Class 1c 1st A H & E M Bartley X AI MUTTERTON ASHTON BITTER 2nd T H E Laity Z POLKINGHORNE GENPRO 3rd J Shinner & Sons STRETCHFORD FALCON Class 1d 1st P S Rowe TREWINT MAGNETTO 4 2nd R R B & S J Harvey SEXTON POLL POLARIS 12 3rd R J & C J Edwards X COLCHARTON HALLMARK 11

News this morning that some cattle farmers in the South West and Midlands may have been illegally swapping cattle ear tags in order to retain cattle tested positive for TB in their herds is quite shocking. As a result of this emerging evidence of fraud, new measures are being introduced to require tagging of animals testing positive for TB from mid-April. At the same time a DNA sample will be retained by Animal Health which may be cross-checked as and when necessary.

HEALTH ISSUES

With Johnes Disease being brought to the public attention (which you will know if you are an Archers fan), may I remind members that the Society’s financial incentive is still in place to encourage steps towards eradication of particular diseases through membership of a CHeCS licensed herd health scheme. If you are a newly joined member of a CHeCS scheme and would like to claim a £5 credit against pedigree registrations over a 2-year period please contact Debbie. You will need to show that you are screening for Johnes Disease in the first instance. Why Johnes? Johnes Disease causes adult cattle to waste and die. It is therefore an important cause of financial loss to beef as well as dairy farmers. Clinical signs of diarrhoea and weight loss usually occur in cattle over 2 years of age. In heavily infected herds this leads to a high rate of wastage in cattle at 3 to 5 years of age. The bacterium that causes Johnes has been linked to the human disease of the bowel, Crohn’s disease. Although no direct link between the two has yet been established some countries, such as the Netherlands, are looking closely at milk and milk products for Johnes as a possible danger to human health. How is Johnes transmitted? The infectious agent is shed in large numbers in faeces and can be found in colostrum and milk. Animals are infected by ingesting the agent, and calves

Page 20: South Devon Herdbook Society Newsletter April 2011

20

are particularly susceptible when suckling. Infection is usually introduced to a herd by purchasing infected stock including bulls. Semen may be infected in the later stages of the disease but this is a low risk for disease transmission. How is Johnes controlled through a CHeCS licensed scheme? Every herd will be different so it is important that you discuss a health plan with your vet, to include initial screening of all animals over 2 years old for signs of the disease. Any reactors and offspring of reactors should be removed from the herd. The herd should then be tested every year, removing reactors and their offspring, until a clear test is achieved, which is a first ‘qualifying’ test. If the following annual test is also clear then the herd is usually accredited as ‘Johnes Disease Monitored Free’. Biosecurity? Improved hygiene to reduce the amount of exposure of suckling calves to faeces is important as part of a whole herd approach to controlling the disease. Also, rabbits can be infected and the organism can survive in the environment for lengthy periods. Johnes is not an easy disease to detect in its early stages, and so an animal may test negative for several years before testing positive – which means that control and eradication in infected herds may take a long time. But with financial losses in infected herds coupled with potential links to a human disease it is in your interests to find out whether you have a problem! Your vet is your first port of call for further information.

JOURNAL 2011/2012 With just the final bits of proof-reading to be done, the Journal is nearing completion and will be published in time for the Council meeting on 19th April. The Journal will then be available for members to pick up – from the office if you are passing, from Sales, and Shows. For those not collected personally (and please help keep our costs down by doing so if you can), the Journals will be posted to members after the Royal Cornwall Show.

LADIES IN BEEF! Member Jilly Greed from Thorverton, near Exeter, has played a key role in the launch of a new promotional beef campaign. Ladies in Beef is a new organisation of female beef farmers who care passionately about British beef. The group was formed to help promote and drive awareness of the quality and versatility of British beef to consumers using a country-wide network of dynamic lady beef ‘champions’. The official launch was made on 14th March at Butchers Hall in London, with guest of honour Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, who joined co-founders Jilly Greed and Minette Batters. A number of multiple retailers have pledged their support for Ladies in Beef, and for Great British Beef Week which will be the main event to coincide with St Georges Day. Independent butchers throughout the country have also been sent a commemorative poster to help drive sales of beef during that week. To quote Jilly: “Great British Beef Week is a national celebration of our fantastic home produced beef – designed to tantalise the taste buds and put some sizzle in our succulent steaks, Sunday roasts, shepherd’s pies, and stir fries!”

CATTLE PASSPORT CHANGES The cattle passport is set to become a one-page document in the summer.

Page 22: South Devon Herdbook Society Newsletter April 2011

22

Eighty per cent of movements are now reported electronically, and a new one-page document will be a more environmentally-friendly and less expensive passport. The new-style passport will contain all the same information as the cheque book style passport and there are no changes to the rules. It will not contain pre-paid movement cards. Cattle keepers will still need to report all movements to BCMS with three days.

CATTLE CLIPPING INJURIES

Too many accidents occur on farm prior to sending animals to slaughter whilst clipping, and some other countries have already moved to post-slaughter clipping on the grounds of health and safety. Member Phil Marjason had a letter published in the Farmers Guardian recently to highlight the issue of injuries incurred by cattle owners; and the NFU are asking to be informed of accidents in respect of clipping cattle to build up a dossier which might then be taken by the Health and Safety Executive. If you can help with information please contact the NFU direct.

CATTLE FOR SALE LIST

The next Cattle for Sale List will be published in the newsletter following the Midland Club Sale. If you would like your animal/s to be included on the List please would you let Debbie know in the first week of May. If we do not hear from you we will assume that you no longer wish to advertise the animal/s for sale and they will not be included.

POLL GROUP OPEN DAY 12 noon, Tuesday 10th May

Chesterton Fields Farm, Fosse Way, Chesterton, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, CV33 9JY

by kind invitation of Hadley Farms Ltd The Hadleys have been quietly pursuing a programme of breeding polled South Devons for about 25 years, and welcome fellow South Devon breeders to view their polled Knightcote herd on 10th May. During the last year they have introduced new bloodlines into the herd by buying in heifers from several other South Devon breeders. The visit will begin at midday with an early lunch, followed by the farm walk before ending the afternoon with tea (including local Banbury buns!) Over tea, there will be an informal open discussion on polling issues, when breeders will be invited to contribute news on polling developments within their own herds. If you would like to attend please use the Reply Slip below, which should be returned to the SDHBS office by Friday 6th May. Directions: Chesterton Fields Farm is on the Fosse Way (the B4455), just north of where the road crosses the M40 and south of where it intersects with the A425. Look out for the windmill on the opposite side of the road.
