It all began with our founder, Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, who boldly professed: “Forward, always forward, everywhere forward.” As we embark on the next 150 years of Saint John’s history, this continues to be our mantra: to strive ever forward. . . grounded in Benedictine values. . . for the sake of the common good.

At Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary, we believe the future holds great promise. Our vision for Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary is captured well by the words of Monsignor Jerome Boxleitner: we aspire to be an oasis for spiritual life, for learning, for culture, for ecumenism, and for hospitality. • 1920’s • 1958 • 1959 • 1960’s • 1970 The School of Theology·Seminary became one of only four schools in the

nation to have a program to educate permanent deacons for service in the Church.

Fr. Virgil Michel, OSB, led the liturgical reform movement, pointing to an essential connection between liturgy and social justice in the life of the Christian.

Saint John’s became the first Roman Catholic seminary to offer graduate degrees to women.

Talks began with faculty at Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, MN, making us one of the first places to engage in ecumenical dialogues.

Fr. Godfrey Diekmann, OSB, and Fr. Kilian McDonnell, OSB, served as official periti (theological advisors) at the Second Vatican Council, advancing liturgical reform and ecumenism.

• NOWSaint John’s School of Theology·Seminary, in cooperation with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, hosted the 2007 and 2011 Symposiums expanding study and dialogue of critical issues facing lay ecclesial ministry today. We are now in discussion for the next Symposium.


• 2000 The School of Theology·Seminary created the Youth and Theology in Ministry (YTM) and the National Catholic Youth Choir (NCYC) programs to engage high school students in the church.


S e r v i c e t o t h e C h u r c hIt is clearer now than it has ever been that the Church needs competent, theologically grounded lay ministers to serve alongside ordained priests and deacons building Christian community together. Developing this ministry of all the baptized and training those called to it is arguably one of the biggest challenges facing the Church in America. In a unique way, Saint John’s has been accomplishing this collaborative service—ordained and lay—for decades.

For decades before and since Vatican II, Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary has been a center of liturgical renewal in North America. We were pioneers in ecumenism as well as in granting theological degrees to women. After Vatican II, Saint John’s school of Theology·Seminary was selected as one of the first four schools in the country to create a program to educate Permanent Deacons for service in the Church.

Today, more than three quarters of Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary students are lay men and women preparing to serve as professional ministers. Seminarians from religious communities seeking to be ordained as priests, deaconate candidates and lay students study together to contribute to the life of our communities as chaplains, teachers, liturgy directors, missionaries, music directors and lay ecclesial ministers. Thankfully, our graduates are answering the call to do the ministry of the church, work that ordained priests no longer do alone. Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary has been a pioneer in developing this form of professional lay ministry for the church.

One of the greatest challenges facing our Church is the declining number of vocations to ordained leadership. We, however, recognize a great opportunity. In forming lay and ordained ministers through a thorough program of theological studies, Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary can meet the need for pastoral ministry and leadership in our Church. Our unique position in the world, where monasticism and contemporary issues can meet in meaningful dialogue, allows future leaders to gain the insights needed to nourish and build up our Christian community.

ENDOWED CHAIRS AND PROFESSORSHIPS, and the donors who create them, are essential to achieving our vision of educational excellence. Chairs or professorships are the highest honor colleges and universities can bestow to recruit and retain key faculty, to provide release time to undertake research and improve teaching, and to raise the stature and visibility of the institution in the academic marketplace. They also say something about the vision, intellect, importance or achievement of the individuals whose names honor the professor or chair holders. Income from these endowments supports professor’s salaries and related departmental programs and activities, such as research opportunities, book acquisitions, visiting speakers and Theology Day lecture series.

Sponsor an Endowed Professorship by making a donation of $1,000,000. This will strengthen and preserve our core programming. Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary provides vital instruction and experience to members of the Church.

Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary has a single endowed faculty chair: the Virgil Michel Ecumenical Chair in Rural Social Ministries. Conversatio programing focuses attention and energy on maintaining the high caliber of many of the country’s pastoral leaders. The program creates opportunities for ministerial renewal through prayer and study for pastoral ministers, both lay and ordained as well as provide further training. Endowing this program begins at $125,000.

•$5,000-$500,000theology day

Theology Day expresses our commitment to a life-long pursuit of wisdom. Sponsoring our growing Theology Day program brings the expertise of our faculty to people in our communities to deepen their understanding of faith and its place in their everyday lives. This program is available to the public at no charge and is requested nationally. $5,000 sponsors one series of presentations; $500,000 would endow the program as a whole and allow us to reach the greater u.S.

Seeing The Word is a program of guided reflection that takes people more deeply into scripture through prayer and reflection using images from The Saint John’s Bible – the first handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey in more than 500 years. Endowing this program requires $250,000.

Statistics and experience indicate that many young adults have a different way of being religious. You may see this in your own children or grandchildren. Many are less connected to the institutional church yet have an inspiring commitment to service and spiritual practice.

The School of Theology·Seminary is committed to engaging this generation and the new world they open up for the church. Your support helps us develop programs and scholarships that will attract young men and women to the study of theology, help them discern their vocation in church and society, and prepare them to meet the spiritual needs of their generation (“praytell” blog, Connect: Young Adults). Endowing these programs requires $250,000.

The Youth in Theology and Ministry (YTM) program invites Catholic high school students from all over the country to gather for two weeks of intensive spiritual growth at Saint John’s. It seeks to cultivate practices of theological reflection, service, and prayer, while encouraging a new generation of young Christians to discover their faith in Jesus Christ.

It is a three-pronged program serving high school youth; students from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s university who serve as counselors; and adult mentors who earn a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary. Endowing this program requires $375,000.

liturgy shapes the life, teaching and scholarship of Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary. It has been one of our historic contributions to the Church. We are proud of the fact that we prepare students for doctoral work in liturgical studies and that our graduates go on to enrich the liturgical experiences of Catholic and Inter-faith communities worldwide as priests, liturgy directors, liturgical musicians and scholars. In fact, firmly rooted in a living monastic community, we believe that community, liturgy, and study are central to our life at the School of Theology; this is one of many things that sets us apart from other schools.

We invite you to step into our chapel and see where much of our School’s experience of liturgy happens. As you may know, when Emmaus Hall was constructed in the early 1950's, it was intended to function as a seminary for candidates to the priesthood. The Chapel reflects the School’s character at that time.

Certainly the Chapel has been used for over 60 years, serving the School as a place of communal gathering and worship. That is a very good thing and its very wear testifies to the many people who have sanctified this space with their innumerable

prayers, songs, proclamations of the Word, and celebration of the Eucharist. This has uplifted the spirits of students, faculty, and guests who have joined weekly to worship in this space. However, its wear also testifies to our present need for some repair.

As an academic community relying on the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, we root ourselves in the Christian tradition, and interpret that legacy in light of the Roman Catholic and Benedictine heritage passed on to us by Saint John’s Abbey with its rich theological, liturgical and ecumenical history. With the 50th Anniversary of Vatican II, faculty, guests, staff, and students wish to celebrate our history and our future in a renovated chapel that brings all of this together in one place, a place of worship.
