3sorrento village life summer 2012-2013

It’s time to refresh, renew, revive and re-visit Sorrento. Spring and summer is when Sorrento comes alive, with a multitude of sporting events, a fantastic selection of seaside activities to get involved in, and of course fabulous shopping in the village. Coming up over the summer months are the Portsea Polo in Point Nepean National Park, the twilight run and the Portsea Classic and Sorrento Bay Swims. Of course, you can also go it alone by doing one of the many walks around Sorrento and its national parks, or along the Sorrento Portsea Artists Trail taking in cliff top mansions and breathtaking bay views. In Sorrento, you can always discover something new. Whether it be a bit of history about one of the many heritage limestone buildings, a dolphin, seal or even occasionally a whale spotted in the bay, or a unique piece of artwork or sculpture for your home, it’s impossible not to make a new discovery. If you haven’t visited the village in a while, you’ll be blown away with the amazing selection of retail stores now available. Sorrento has over 30 fashion boutiques, many unique to the village or the Peninsula, bespoke traders who can custom make jewellery or clothing to suit your needs, a range of galleries and homewards stores and of course some of the best restaurants and cafes going around. With the advent of on-line shopping it’s sometimes nice to get back to a place where customer service is like it used to be, where retailers can customise selections for you and treat you like a person and not just a sale.Of course if retail therapy is not your thing, you can always take a little relaxation therapy at one of the day spas or just relax either by the bay or by the Ocean.Live the Life Sorrento style and enjoy Sorrento Village.Natalie Garner, Business Development ManagerSorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce

That’s a phrase you hear a lot of when entering Australia’s biggest puppet store right in the heart of Sorrento Village. Witches, clowns, fairies and ghouls hang from the ceiling while gorgeous hand-made teddies snuggle beneath. Marionettes and puppets from Prague, Indonesia, Germany and the USA play along-side traditional wooden toys and puzzles. Tin cars park next to dress ups, dolls, books and umbrellas. Geppetto’s Workshop is a treasure trove of all things past, present and future and caters to all generations. Grandparents exclaim, ‘I had one of those when I was little’, while small folk love saying hi to giant wooden soldiers and the five foot Pinocchio puppet hanging near the front door.Owner Noel White has been in the toy industry for around eleven years but never tires of seeing his customer’s smiles because, “toys bring people together”. With a great selection of unique keepsakes such as Babushka (Russian authentic) dolls, scratch and smell stickers, spinning tops, train whistles and whirly gigs, Geppetto’s Workshop is a toy store that takes you back to your childhood and keeps you in it, happily. *Christmas gift packs available, just ask in store.

MAGICAL MILLER ON OCEAN by Liz Rogers

Walking into Marlene Miller Antiques is like jumping inside a story book where you become the main character. You are transported to a time of afternoon teas in rose adorned cups, striking it rich in the gold fields of the 1800’s or promenading the town in the latest mink stole mid 1940’s. The store reads like who’s who from the seventeenth century onwards. One hundred year old chests support sharpened Italian tools from the 1850’s. Victorian Cedar bookcases lay in wait for poetry and fiction from as early as the 1680’s to tell their tales. Antiques have the wonderful power to divulge our past so we can look towards the future. Marlene has been part of the antique world for over twenty-eight years. Her keen eye is personified in her eclectic range of fine jewellery. Viewing the magnificent range of Gold Rush brooches, necklaces and rings is a must. The gold in these early pieces is fluid, almost seeming to spring back into shape when touched. ‘Baby’ Georgian money brooches with pearls symbolising tears framing locks of hair intrigue, while contemporary pieces made by Melbourne’s top jewellers will impress - this is the perfect place to find that engagement or wedding ring you’ve been searching for.Step back into a world where craftsmanship is honoured and age is a thing of beauty at Marlene Miller Antiques, where magic really does happen and time stands still.Marlene Miller Antiques - open seven days a week 10.00 (ish) am till 5.00pm (closed Christmas and Good Friday)128 Ocean Beach Road, SorrentoPh: 03 5984 1762 M: 0438 537 757

Wendy Grace has painted a series of works dealing with perceptual issues surrounding colour, chance and spontaneity. While alluding to the landscape, the works remain within the realm of abstraction. Wendy is a bayside artist who works between the aqueous spaces

of the coastal fringe and the hinterland environment. Her organic, abstract works recall the familiar, the natural and ephemeral patterns and colours found in nature. Yet with compositions of transparent paint that run, pool and bloom merging into mysterious biomorphic forms, Wendy’s paintings suggest an otherness. Evocative shapes question what we see and what we think we see, vacillating between the invisible and the visible, the familiar and the unknown.Wendy graduated from RMIT University with a Diploma of Visual Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) and Honours, in painting in 2007. She has held several solo exhibitions and is a finalist in the Redland Art Awards and St Georges Art Awards for 2012. Wendy has exhibited in numerous group

exhibitions and is represented in a number of private collections. Other featured artists at Manyung Gallery include Bruce Earles, Craig Penny, Jo-ann Hunt, Katherine Alexander, Barbara Tyson, Darren Doye, Conchita Carambano, Ross Willsmore, Miertje Skidmore and many more. We’d love to see you at our galleries located in Sorrento, Mt Eliza and Malvern. 9787 2953www.manyunggallery.com.auArtwork: Antipodes by Wendy Grace (right) and Pineapple Smoke by Bruce Earles (above)

A properly planned and constructed garden can add tens of thousands of dollars in value to your home.

Selecting a landscape gardener who can bring your garden dreams to fruition is an important part of the process.

Marcus McCausland has years of experience in the industry and his business – Element Garden Construction – is a multifaceted company with design, construction and maintenance all taken into account when planning your garden.

Mt Eliza born and bred, Marcus did his apprenticeship in horticulture at what was formerly Linton’s Garden & Home (now Eden Garden Centre).

After becoming fully qualified, Marcus

then decided to work in Europe for a couple of years to gain an appreciation of garden design on a grand scale.

He also spent some time in South Africa and continues to travel the globe to update his knowledge and refresh his ideas on sophisticated garden construction.

Marcus says “Designing and installing gardens is an enjoyable process and we thrive on being part of each stage and ensuring a seamless service.”

“Our designs are simple and timeless and often incorporate local recycled timbers, steelwork and natural stone reflecting the essence of the Mornington Peninsula.”

A minimalist approach and lessening the impact on the environment is

what Element Garden Construction is all about.

Element offers more than just design and constructing gardens.

Qualified horticulturalists will write a personalised maintenance schedule of your garden and follow through with regular visits across all seasons. Feeding, clipping and mulching are all part of maintaining your garden’s longevity and making sure it’s in top condition throughout the year.

Element Garden Construction also have a full range of excavation equipment on hand, including 1.5 tonne and 3 tonne excavators, a kanga mini loader, a large bobcat, a tip truck as well as a full range of augers for boring holes.

During October, the Sorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce arranged an independent and highly qualified image and style consultant, Julie Hyne, to run style workshops and personal shopping tours in Sorrento. Julie spent time explaining about different body shapes, and how colour, patterns, textures, lengths, and the general style of clothing you wear affects your overall image. Hair colour and style can also greatly impact how young you look, as can the heal or shape of your shoes and your make up. These are all things that we think we know about ourselves, but as our

lifestyle and life stages change, so does our body shape, skin and hair colour, and therefore often the clothes you wear also need to change. In Sorrento there is over 30 fashion stores, where you can find something unique and fabulous, local & overseas brands that you can’t get elsewhere. Most Sorrento fashion stores have qualified staff, trained to help you put items together to get a style of outfit that best suits you and your body.GIRLS WEEKENDS AWAY – BOOK YOUR VERY OWN STYLISTSorrento has so much to offer for

the perfect girls weekend away. An idyllic seaside location with bay and ocean beaches, activities such as dolphin swims, surfing and stand up Paddle Board, national parks within easy walking distance, and beautiful heritage buildings. Sorrento also boasts great eateries, day spas and of course fabulous shopping for yourself, your home and kids. You can book Julie for your next girls weekend away and learn about the best styles for you and your friends before hitting the shops. Julie is available for either a personal shopping tour or a styling session. Call 0433 114 841 or email [email protected] . It’s a real treat to combine a shopping trip with relaxation, to be able to enjoy the fresh air, wander at leisure and leave the “parking rage” at the big shopping complexes. ENJOY A FIRE SAFE SUMMERIn the summer months there’s no better place to be than down the coast or in some of our stunning bush or grassland areas. Wind down and enjoy a fun and relaxing summer break knowing you’ve taken a few simple steps to stay fire safe. Away from Home ChecklistFive things to do every time you’re out and about.Save the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (1800 240 667) into your mobileKnow the most up-to-date Fire Danger Rating for the area you are travelling toFind out if a Total Fire Ban has been declaredListen to ABC local radio (or other emergency broadcaster) Be prepared to change your plans on hot, dry, windy daysFire Ready App Get the latest fire information and warnings direct to your smartphone or iPad. Set the app to notify you when an incident occurs in a chosen area and use it to stay up-to-date with local Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans. Download the app free from cfa.vic.gov.au. Monitor Fire Danger Ratings to stay safe On days where the Fire Danger Ratings is Severe, Extreme or Code Red, it’s better to visit or stay in town centres and avoid being in dry grass or scrub areas, or in the bush. Visitors to parks and forests should expect them to be closed on Code Red days.Did you know?Code Red days are rare - when forecast they are extremely serious. Bans and Ratings – what’s the difference? Total Fire Bans are legal restrictions on open fires, equipment and BBQs that prevent fires from starting. Fire Danger Ratings help you to know when the local conditions are dangerous enough to enact your bushfire plan. That might mean leaving the area early, well before there are any signs of fire – once a fire has started the chances are it will be too late to leave. To find out more, visit cfa.vic.gov.au or call 1800 240 667.

Discover Point NepeanWith its spectacular natural and built landscapes, Point Nepean National Park is a place that leaves an immediate impression on anyone who visits. It is truly one of Victoria’s beautiful natural landscapes. The park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay.The entrance to Port Phillip Bay was the most heavily forted port of the British Empire and was known as the ‘Gibraltar of the South’. Visitors can see an example of this at the very point of the park where Fort Nepean is located. It is where an extensive network of forts, gun emplacements and tunnels are located. Also at the park is the Quarantine Station, established in 1852, it offers a unique opportunity to see an infectious disease processing facility still in place. Here visitors will find many historic buildings used

in quarantine which include hospitals, a disinfecting complex, a morgue, cemetery and much more to explore.Point Nepean has an extensive network of tracks to cycle or walk. One recently opened is the Range Area Walk, it takes visitors through an area of the park where the Officer Cadets, who occupied the site for three decades, trained. Features on this walk include a 400m firing range and Monash Break and Light with sweeping views of the park and Melbourne City.Visitors can also relax and enjoy a picnic at Point Nepean with the shade of a Moonah tree. They are part of a coastal habitat complete with wildlife including echidnas, bandicoots, wallabies, reptiles. In the surrounding waters visitors might also spot bottlenose Dolphins or Australian Fur Seals. Point Nepean National Park is located at the end of Point Nepean Road, Portsea. Park entry is freeFor more information visit www.parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963

Taking a walk anywhere on the Mornington Peninsula is a joyous experience, but the Millionaire’s Walk along the clifftops from Sorrento to Portsea is simply thrilling.Besides being gobsmacked by the awesome views across Port Philip Bay and beyond, one gets to step into the backyards of the Peninsula’s rich and famous. As well as marvelling at their beautifully landscaped gardens, you’ll get an insight into how Melbourne’s elite spend time at their summer mansions with their private jetties. The two kilometre walk is relatively easy and usually takes about two hours.Start your walk at the Sorrento Beach rotunda and stroll along the Esplanade towards Portsea. You’ll pass the historical stream train terminals before mounting the clifftop and ambling through the Millionaires gardens. On a clear day you can see Queenscliff on the other side of

the bay and you’ll also observe the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry coming and going. You’ll even spot the Millionaires out in their leisure craft.Sorrento was the location of the first white settlement in Victoria.Just before you finish the walk in Portsea, you will come across a white trig station and a stone monument. This is the place where on the 9th of March 1802, Acting Lieutenant John Murray, commander of ‘HMS Lady Nelson’ took possession of Port King, which was later renamed Port Philip Bay, for the British Crown..He marked the spot by hoisting the Union Jack – the first time the flag was hoisted in Australia. If you’re thirsty after the walk, you can always drop into the Portsea Hotel for a refreshment or two!Millionaire’s Walk isn’t the only great walk in the Sorrento area, there are plenty of others. For more information contact the Beachside Visitor Information Centre on 5984 1478.
