Here’s to a much better year ahead. We are working hard, and now even extra hard, to keep our students and staff healthy and safe. Thank you so much for supporting these safety protocols as well. We all have a part to play to keep this pandemic away. Wishing you and yours a great year ahead. Let’s do this! Ms. J. Garries Sorrento’s Pandemic Protocols As mentioned above, we are being extra vigilant to ensure we are doing all we can to keep our school community safe in regards to Covid-19. We are really limiting access to our building as much as possible, to just people who work here, and parents when necessary, by appointment. We are keeping our students on site as well, and not scheduling field trips at this time. We appreciate your help with keeping your children home when they display signs of illness (the checklist is below), and thank you for doing such a great job of that, thus far. We know Valentines’ Day is coming soon, and teachers will do a good job of recognizing this often fun time, in spite of the pandemic. We cannot accept treats or snacks for class parties once again, and ask that if you choose to do Valentine’s Day cards with your child for their classmates, to please just do the “paper kind” that do not have treats attached. Thank you. Finally, once again, we ask that if you are picking up or dropping off your child at school, that you maintain your distance by staying at the perimeter of the school grounds. We also ask that you wear a mask, as we have seen some parents engage with staff or other children without masks. We thank you for doing this simple, selfless act. We love our community! Dear Parents,

Happy 2021! We have

been at school for just

about 3 weeks, and it’s

such a strange January!

The weather is not

snowy and cold and

typical for sure. Here’s to a much better year ahead. We are

working hard, and now even extra hard, to keep our students

and staff healthy and safe. Thank you so much for

supporting these safety protocols as well. We all have a part

to play to keep this pandemic away. Wishing you and yours a

great year ahead. Let’s do this! Ms. J. Garries

Sorrento’s Pandemic Protocols

As mentioned above, we are being extra vigilant to ensure we are doing all we

can to keep our school community safe in regards to Covid-19. We are really

limiting access to our building as much as possible, to just people who work here,

and parents when necessary, by appointment. We are keeping our students on

site as well, and not scheduling field trips at this time. We appreciate your help

with keeping your children home when they display signs of illness (the checklist

is below), and thank you for doing such a great job of that, thus far.

We know Valentines’ Day is coming soon, and teachers will do a good job of

recognizing this often fun time, in spite of the pandemic. We cannot accept treats

or snacks for class parties once again, and ask that if you choose to do

Valentine’s Day cards with your child for their classmates, to please just do the

“paper kind” that do not have treats attached. Thank you.

Finally, once again, we ask that if you are picking up or dropping off your child

at school, that you maintain your distance by staying at the perimeter of the

school grounds. We also ask that you wear a mask, as we have seen some parents

engage with staff or other children without masks. We thank you for doing this

simple, selfless act. We love our community!

Canadian Tire Money Fundraiser

This fundraising initiative is ongoing! We simply invite our families and

staff to donate their Canadian Tire money to our school. Sorrento

uses this money to buy a variety of things that will benefit the school. If you

have Canadian Tire money you wish to donate, we are happy to accept it. You can

also give Canadian Tire our school phone number (250-675-2311) and it gets

deposited directly to our Canadian Tire money card. Thanks!

Head Lice

It’s that time of year when these inconvenient pests really thrive. If or when a child gets lice, we ask that parents give their child treatment, and do a thorough cleaning of all soft surfaces and laundry at home. It is a good practice to do a head check of all the people in your family at least every week. We fully recognize what a nuisance head lice is, and we thank you for spending the time it takes to prevent it from spreading.

Numeracy is Our Goal! Sorrento’s school

improvement plan is

about improving our

students’ numeracy

skills.

This is a photo of

students in grade 4

and 5 doing financial

literacy, and

balancing their

“cheque books”!

Students are doing a

wide variety of tasks and assignments to help strengthen their skills

in class. How can you help? Ask your child’s teacher about what

specific things your child is studying, and speak positively about

math in front of your child. Telling them you didn’t like math, or that

you weren’t good in math, builds a negative experience for your

child too. Parents are an important part of the learning journey for

their children!

Pro-D Day in February

This coming month, we have a Pro-D day on Friday Feb 12. Our staff is doing

some learning about managing the effects of grief, loss and trauma on learners,

and overall mental health strategies.

School Fees Our school fees pay for student supplies and the agenda

book which we provide to every student every year. We

order and pay for these items and then collect the fees after. School fees are:

$35 for kindergarten

$45 for grades 1 – 5

If you suspect you have not paid your fees, we welcome these anytime. We even

take payment plans ($5/month for example, if that helps). We encourage payment

by e-tranfers to our school email address ([email protected]). Thanks for your

support.

Family Day! A reminder that there is no school on Monday

Feb 15 in recognition of Family Day! We hope you can enjoy this time together

Report Cards Will Be Out Soon! Our school will be sending out report cards on Wed. Mar. 3. As always, parents are encouraged to reach out to classroom teachers if they have any questions or concerns at any time. Thank you for staying so involved with your child’s progress – parents are a critical part of the learning process
