You will be asked to create an online ID which is

a public nickname visible to all SEN users; and

supply a short “About Me” statement, avatar, and

choose your country and language (SEN, 2012a).

This information may be published on any of

SEN’s websites at any time – so be careful with

master account that is allowed to create sub-

accounts for users under the age of 18. These sub-

The Great Data Breach of 2011

If you are signing up to an SEN account you may

want to read up about its previous iteration – the

PlayStation Network (PSN) (Emerson, 2012).

PSN had a few security problems in 2011

(Baker & Finkle, 2011).

(PSN, 2012)

Page 11: Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) Online Policy Primer Presentation

PSN Breach(es) in a Nutshell

In 2011 the private information of 77 million PSN users was exposed by Hackers including

names, addresses and credit cards.

Sony took a week to notify PSN users of the

breach. (Baker & Finkle, 2011).

Later in 2011 the private information of another

93,000 users was again exposed (Naraine, 2011).

Page 12: Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) Online Policy Primer Presentation

What laws protect you and

your data?

As the data on SEN may be held in any number of

countries data protection law enforcement becomes

complicated (SNE, 2012a).

Across the globe laws differ greatly.

In Australia there are currently no mandatory data

breach laws protecting internet users (Lawrence, 2012).

Page 13: Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) Online Policy Primer Presentation

SEN insures against liability

In the aftermath of these breaches Sony was sued

via a class action by PSN users. In reaction Sony

altered their “Terms of Service” so that gamers

waived their rights to launch such class actions (BBC News, 2011).

If users did not agree to these new terms their

accounts were terminated (BBC News, 2011).

Page 14: Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) Online Policy Primer Presentation

SEN insures against liability

You need to check your protections against data

breaches within the “Terms of Service” agreement

that applies to your geographic area. By doing so

you will be able to make an informed decision

before signing up to the SEN service.

Read Section 17 if you are in the United States or

Canada (SEN, 2012c).

There is no such section for Australian SEN users.
