Sony Corporation - Abinash

1
The Story of Sony Corporation The theme “You are hired! Coolie” deals with debate of ownership of intellectual property rights that have been developed by the employee at the employer’s organization. The story of Sony Corporation under this theme describes the way Sony Corporation deals with the intellectual properties and ideas of its employees. At Sony, there are various groups that work on creating new inventions and innovations. The employee responsible for the idea is given complete autonomy for presenting the idea to the top management and on approval the employee has to sell the idea to technical, design, marketing and other concerned staff. If the idea gets rejected but the employee still wants to pursue it independently, then Sony even goes to the extent of providing the employees with seed capital to start their ventures. The story was narrated along with the story of “Prout vs. British Gas” where an employee successfully sues the organization for patent infringement on an idea that he suggested to British Gas in good faith. The two stories highlight two diametrically opposite practices where one organization endorses the employee’s idea, while the other goes for its unauthorized use. The major learning from both the stories is that an employer cannot exploit the ideas presented by the employees in good faith. Many companies have schemes for employees to send their suggestions and ideas in good faith that they will be recognized for the idea. But using the ideas without giving due consideration and recognition to the employees is the exploitation of the idea in an unauthorized manner. Instead companies should provide due consideration to the employees before using their ideas with their consent.
