his picturesque destination in Santa Barbara County, California, encompasses six communities clustered closely together like wine grapes. From the charming, tiny gem of rural Ballard, the bustling gateway city of Buellton,

the vintage western town of Los Alamos, the arts-influenced, wine-infused town of Los Olivos and the turn-of-the-20th-century township of Santa Ynez, to the northern European atmosphere of the city of Solvang founded by Danish-Americans in 1911, it’s relaxing and refreshing to meander and experience them all. Just two hours up the coast from Los Angeles, it feels like a world away with endless possibilities.

Savor warm hospitality from friendly folks, complemented by a breathtaking backdrop of sage-green and golden oak-studded hills. Tour and taste at some of the more than 100 acclaimed wineries and tasting rooms offering Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and other varietals; check out craft breweries, too—and pack a picnic with savories from a local farm stand. Shop at art galleries, clothing boutiques, specialty gift shops and antique stores. Or explore a lavender farm, ostrich farm, horse ranch or get a hawk’s-eye view soaring from a glider ride. Then hit the town for a scrumptious meal—choose from farm-to-table dining, elegant wine-country cuisine, Danish specialties as well as international and classic American favorites.

Still have energy? How about a concert, dancing or a experiencing a professional performance under summer stars by PCPA Theaterfest at Solvang Festival Theater? Or take in live entertainment and gaming at the Chumash Casino Resort. When it’s time to turn in for the night, choose from 35 comfortable inns, cozy bed & breakfasts, luxury resorts or full-service hotels—each offering rates, amenities, as well as seasonal or themed packages for every budget. At the end of your Solvang and Santa Ynez Valley getaway, the only thing you’ll be wishing for is a longer stay—so make plans to return soon.

Sideways at 10Filmed on-location throughout Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley,

the movie Sideways premiered in September 2004 and won

multiple awards including an Oscar, two Golden Globes, seven

Independent Spirit trophies and was named the American Film

Institute “2004 Film of the Year.” Directed by Alexander Payne

and co-written by Payne and Jim Taylor, the movie was adapted

from Rex Pickett’s novel of the same name. Sideways stars

Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen and

Sandra Oh in a comedy-drama of two middle-aged men and

the women they meet on a weeklong wine tasting adventure

in the Santa Ynez Valley. It continues to bring worldwide rec-

ognition to the area. Visitors can personally experience real-

life scenes in the movie with specialty maps and hotel tour

packages. Numerous events are planned to celebrate the 10th

anniversary of the film and to discover what’s changed (and

what’s not). For complete details visit www.Sideways10.com

Visiting the ValleyEncircled by the Santa Ynez and San Rafael mountain ranges, six distinctive communities all within 2-20 minutes of each other await your discovery in the Santa Ynez Valley: Solvang. Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Los Alamos, Buellton, and Ballard.

SolvangIn 1911, three Danish-American educators encountered a place in the Golden State where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper—and founded a community they named Solvang (sunny field in Danish). Only two hours up the coast from Los Angeles, and adjacent to the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés (now a National Historic Landmark District), Solvang thrived and settlers carried on Danish traditions of language, folk dancing, music and cuisine. As the 20th century pro-gressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect Danish farm-style architecture—the cross-beamed bindingsvaerk, timbers framing either brick or stucco and roofing of thatch made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Just as it does in Copenhagen, Denmark’s national symbol of the “Little Mermaid” bronze sculpture (in ½ size authorized replica) welcomes visitors at the intersection of Mission Drive and Alisal Road. Windmills of all sizes catch the first and last light throughout the village. Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck—that continues to smile on Solvang and all its visitors still.

After the conclusion of World War II, idyllic Solvang was “discovered” by the media and described in the Saturday Evening Post as a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose” and enticed travelers to experience it for themselves. In 2009, Solvang was honored with the prestigious “Preserve America Community” award by the national Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. In 2013, Solvang was named by Huffington Post as the #2 place to “Travel to Europe Without Leaving the USA.”

The Danish Days annual festival emerged in 1936 and continues to commemorate Solvang’s heritage every September. Festivals and celebrations are traditional parts of Solvang’s charm—from the Taste of Solvang every March and Julefest (Yule-fest) during December. Solvang was named by Time Magazine as one of the “Most Christmas-y Towns in the USA.” Discover more at the not-to-be-missed Elverhoj Museum of History & Art and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum as well as the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum and find where art and nature meet at the Wildling Museum.

Be drawn into Scandinavian culture strolling Solvang’s flower-lined streets or stepping into five authentic bakeries and more than 30 restaurants and cafes—featuring not only Danish cuisine but also wine-country, international and traditional American favorites. Dozens of wine and beer tasting rooms, wine bars and gourmet food shops tempt palates with the bounty of nearby vineyards and farms. For the area’s freshest fruits, veggies, flowers and local items, check out the downtown Farmers’ Market every Wednesday afternoon year-round near Solvang Park. And don’t miss the chance to experience a professional performance under summer stars at PCPA Theaterfest—in Solvang’s lovely 700-seat outdoor Festival Theater.

Turn in any direction within Solvang’s pedestrian-friendly village and delight in an array of colorful items such as clogs, hand-made lace, clothing, porcelain, elegant collectibles, beautifully crafted imports, vibrant arts and crafts, vibrant furnishings and classic toys in more than 100 one-of-a-kind stores, art galleries and antique centers. The primary retail areas are along Mission Drive, Copenhagen Drive, Alisal Road and charming side streets beckon with wonderful clusters of shops in courtyards and squares. When it’s time to turn in for the night, choose from 16 comfortable inns, cozy bed & breakfasts, luxury resorts or full-service hotels—each o ering rates, amenities, as well as seasonal or themed packages for every budget. Now in its

second century, Solvang’s 5,245 residents of many cultures still continue to enjoy the same traditions as the founders envisioned—welcoming friends, family and visitors from around the world to share the joys of “California’s Little Denmark”.

BallardWith a population of 467, Ballard is the smallest of the region’s towns yet still holds some of the valley’s most treasured gems. A “Little Red Schoolhouse” has been educating young Ballard residents since 1883. Today it’s one of the top-performing schools in Santa Barbara County and the bell still rings to summon students. This community is home to The Ballard Inn & Restaurant—one of the most romantic B&Bs in the region where delectable wine-country fusion meals are savored. It’s well worth a brief visit to Ballard to see historic homes, churches, Seein’ Spots Miniature Donkey Farm as well as experience the serenity and charm of a well-preserved country burg.

Los OlivosCalifornia history melds with modern-day wine tasting rooms, art galleries and upscale shops in this picture-perfect country town in the northeast part of the valley (population 1,132). Centered by an iconic flagpole, Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround Los Olivos. This is a charming place to visit for a one-stop wine country experience. It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors; and most people wear jeans, cowboy boots and casual attire. The town dates back to the 1860s, when the stagecoach route began to pass through. County Historic Landmark Mattei’s Tavern was built to house and feed those passengers and now features a luxurious restaurant and bar. Many historic structures hold distinctly modern enterprises where you’ll discover retail treasures or can sip local vintages at a tasting room (choose among more than 30 within a 5-block area). The annual Jazz & Olive Festival every June attracts name performers and creative olive-centric cuisine from local chefs. Dine at a casual café or gourmet restaurant. Discover special annual events such as the Quick Draw Artists Festival (August), Day in the Country (October) and Olde Fashioned Christmas (December.)

Santa YnezIn the vintage township of Santa Ynez (population 4,418), it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s 2014 or 1884 with its period-style false-front building facades housing shops, saloons, feed stores and random horses hitched to posts. However, this rather sophisticated cowboy town also boasts plenty of conveniences for modern-day trail riders. A variety of restaurants serve up delicious options from casual burgers, pancakes and waffles (beloved by locals) to steaks, seafood, regional Italian fare, Latin fusion and locavore cuisine. Modern shops and galleries line streets with horse-shoe embedded crosswalks. Don’t miss the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House for a fascinating dose of Old West heritage and myriad events year-round such as the Vaquero Show & Sale in November. The Chumash Casino Resort is adjacent to the township with 24/7 gaming, live entertainment, dining and a luxurious hotel. Old Santa Ynez Day every June is just one fun time to visit, when the town celebrates with a street fair, parade and country-western entertainment. Cyclists gravitate to Santa Ynez as well for a world-class training center, tours or just the chance to ride a bike along serene country roads—there’s plenty to see and do in the town that gave the Valley its name.

BuelltonFounded by rancher R.T. Buell in 1875 and incorporated as a city in 1992 (current population 4,828), Buellton serves as an important gateway to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Rita Hills wine country. This bustling town encompasses both sides of US Highway 101 (north-south) at the junction of State Route 246 (east-west), and from this thriving hub, you have easy access to all regional destinations. Buellton provides essential travel/ visitor needs—a wide variety of lodging, shops, service stations, grocery stores—plus lots of extras, including a range of restau-rants, serving everything from sushi and western-style grilled steaks to tacos and pancakes; boasts a state-of-the-art wine making facility that also serves as a restaurant and tasting room as well as two regional craft breweries and Santa Barbara County’s first distillery since prohibition. Buellton Brewfest on the first Saturday of May celebrates suds at River View Park. Before US Highway 101 was built, the Pacific Coast Highway (now Avenue of Flags) traversed the town. Starting in 1924, Buellton’s Pea Soup Andersen’s Restaurant lured travelers off the highway with tasty split pea soup. If you dine there, climb upstairs to view vintage photos in the Buellton Historical Society’s free History Room on the second floor. The Oscar-winning 2004 wine-themed road-trip movie Sideways was filmed in various locations around the Santa Ynez Valley and featured some iconic venues—a waitress in a restaurant and fabulous pinot noirs? Check out Hitching Post II. The motel with the windmill? Days Inn. Ostriches? They’re all in Buellton. Stay and play soon!

Los AlamosSurrounded by ranches, farms and vineyards at the northern “entry” to the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos (population 1,890) is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135 (the main thoroughfare known as Bell Street.) It’s only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876, two ranchers each donated part of their land to create the town site. Named Los Alamos (Spanish for “the cottonwoods) that still grace the area, it looks and feels vintage yet with a burgeoning food, wine, art & antiques scene. One-of-a-kind lodging includes the historic 1880 Union Hotel, a Victorian-style bed & breakfast with six incredible theme suites, an inn with a view and a classic motor court. Buildings old and new house art galleries, antique shops, food and wine tasting rooms and a surprising variety of restaurants for every type of diner from locavore to carnivore. The Los Alamos Third Saturday Stroll every month offers themed special events. During the last weekend of September, Los Alamos Old Days honors the town’s western heritage with a celebration including arts & crafts fair, BBQ, car show, dance and parade—an excellent time to wrangle a visit with free fun for the whole family.

ast and present go hand in hand throughout the Santa Ynez Valley . . . and they get along very nicely! Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish-Americans with a vision of a place to honor their Scandinavian traditions. The towns of Ballard, Buellton, Los Alamos, Los

Olivos and Santa Ynez each have their own personalities and colorful histories of ranching and agriculture as well as Native American, Spanish and Mexican influences. This rich heritage is celebrated every day in vibrant museums, shops and galleries . . . so get ready to explore!

The Elverhøj Museum of History & Art celebrates Solvang’s Danish heritage through rooms bursting with historic photos, artifacts, arts, crafts and period pieces. History comes to life as docents periodically dress in authentic Danish costumes; the ever-changing exhibits and special events make each visit a new experience. Discover The Wildling Museum in its new home in the heart of Solvang—it’s “where art and nature meet” and inspire visitors to value and conserve wildlife and natural areas through a program of enticing exhibits, events, and classes.

In Solvang, Rasmussen’s is one-stop shopping for all things Scandinavian from Royal Copenhagen porcelain to a wide va-riety of kitchen items and decorations. A wide range of art is on display at inviting galleries, all within steps from each other. Visit Pavlov Art Gallery for a refreshing and contemporary per-spective by owner Chris Pavlov. At the impressive Z Folio Gallery, be dazzled with Czech art glass, handmade designer jewelry, innovative decor and gi-clée nature photography along with designer trunk shows and exhibitions. A readers’ favorite for over forty years, The Book Loft specializes in Scandinavian, antiquarian and children’s books, as well as local interests and California history; and upstairs is the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, celebrating the multi-talented Danish father of the modern fairy tale.

PCPA Theaterfest, the only resident professional theatre company on California’s Central Coast, celebrates its 50th anniversary season in 2014. From June through September, sit under the stars in the 700-seat open-air Solvang Festival Theater and enjoy world-class productions of Forever Plaid, Noises Off, Oklahoma! and The San Patricios.

In downtown Santa Ynez, the Valley’s vibrant multi-cultural heritage is the focus at the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum & Parks-Janeway Carriage House. Eight rooms of fascinating memorabilia, artifacts, documents and photos chronicle area history from the Chumash Indians through 20th-century days. Don’t miss the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles west of the Mississippi.

In Los Olivos, St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church serves as a community hub for more than 60 area groups and offers a range of spiritual, musical and artistic programs along with a labyrinth on its beautifully landscaped grounds. Fresh FareWith strong agricultural roots, abundant sunshine and a crop-friendly climate with a year-round growing season, the farm-to-table way of eating has long been a way of life in the Santa Ynez Valley.

hat’s on the menu? Everything from down-home American to authentic Danish and smorgasbord to sushi. There’s something

delicious here to please any palate and pocket- book. You’ll find restaurants spot-lighting

local ingredients, romantic hideaways, family-friendly pancake houses, brew pubs, oodles of al fresco dining options, wine from the valley’s award-winning vineyards and even locally-brewed beers. (For complete details, dig into the Dining Guide on pages 45-46.)

Local chefs scour the Solvang Village Farmers Market for just-picked produce every Wednesday afternoon year-round in downtown Solvang (on First St. between Mission Dr. and Copenhagen Dr.). Seasonal farm stands burst with fresh fruits and veggies, lavender, olive oils and more, adding to the strong rural flavor of the area. (See the list on page 10).

In Solvang, sample traditional Danish and American specialties at long-time local favorites such as the Greenhouse Café-A Nordic Bistro (delicious smørrebrød/open face sandwiches) and the Red Viking Restaurant (bountiful smorgaasbord) and The Solvang Restaurant (which was featured in the movie Sideways breakfast scene.) CHOMP-Burgers, Fries & Shakes will satisfy your desire for classic American favorites in fun, family friendly atmosphere for lunch and dinner daily. The stylish Root 246 adjacent to Hotel Corque features farm-to-fork cuisine, an extensive selection of top-notch local wines and signature cocktails. Rustic Italian fare is the focus at Cecco Ristorante where Chef David Cecchini turns out Neapolitan-

W

inspired pizzas from his wood-burning oven, handmade pastas, salumi, salads, grilled meats and seafood. Stop by Fresco Valley Café and dig into hearty wraps, delicious soups, super fresh salads and more indoors or on the spacious patio. The Alisal River Terrace serves up savory California classics with a Central Coast flair accompanied by a panoramic golf course view and is also available for private parties.

Casually elegant, the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café serves fresh, California-Mediterranean wine-friendly cuisine for lunch and dinner daily (and also had several star turns in the movie Sideways—where you can still enjoy a prix fixe menu featuring what the characters enjoyed at their dinner).

Vintner Michael Larner, son Steven, wife Christina and their newborn Sienna enjoy a precious moment in their vineyard in Ballard Canyon. Founded in 1999, the ranch is planted with 34 acres of Rhône varieties including Syrah and Grenache with wines avail-able for tasting at the family’s Los Olivos General Store.

Cheers!Wine tasting and touring in Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley is a don’t-miss experience and a feast for the senses. Meander over sage-scented rural roads with a stunning backdrop of oak-studded golden hills. Stroll through vibrant vineyards and sip, swirl and savor the flavors.

anta Ynez Valley is one of five distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVA)—also known as wine appellations—in Santa Barbara County’s vast wine country. The other four AVAs are Santa Maria Valley, Sta. (Santa) Rita Hills, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara (tucked in the east end of Santa

Ynez Valley) and the new Ballard Canyon. Together, these five growing regions comprise 23,000+ acres of grape vineyards that annually produce more than a million cases of wine—including popular Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, but also top-notch Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier.

More than 50 varietals thrive in the area’s diverse micro-climates. The unusual east-west orientation of the coastal mountains creates transverse valleys that funnel cool Pacific Ocean air and fog inland during the late afternoon and evening. The resulting hot sunny days and cool nights are a winning combination for both wine grapes and wine tasters. The Oscar-winning 2004 movie Sideways shot on location throughout the area helped to plant the Santa Ynez Valley firmly on the international wine map.

Wine tasting events abound during the year—note the Taste of Solvang (March); Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Festival (April); St. Mark’s Cellar Classic Auction of Rare & Fine Wine (June); Santa Ynez Valley Wine Collectors Month (September); Celebration of Harvest (October); and Solvang Wine Walk (December).

Touring Wine CountryMost of the 120+ wineries located here are small boutique operations and many are family-owned and -operated. Visitors enjoy the area’s strong rural flavor and tasting world-class wines in an unpretentious, friendly atmosphere where it’s not unusual to end up chatting with the winemaker or owner —either at the winery or in-town tasting rooms. And it’s all within a 2- to 20-minute walk or drive, with many lodging options close by. You can design your own itinerary, or sign up with a local tour company for a professionally guided tour in a limo, jeep, van, private sedan or even a bike. The Grapeline Wine Tours offers daily hosted tours aboard deluxe coaches. Or take a spin out of Santa Ynez with Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours on a two-wheeled guided adventure. (See listings on page 54.)

On-site vineyard tasting rooms range from rustic converted barns to elegant Mediterranean-style villas. Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard just outside of Solvang, has a 39-acre sustainably managed vineyard,

Sworking farm and a bustling tasting room. Bridlewood Estate Winery combines graceful Spanish-style architecture with a modern, artisan winery in a former Arabian horse ranch. Kalyra Winery has a varied portfolio of reds, whites, roses and dessert wines—their laid-back tasting room was seen in the movie Sideways. Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery in the cool-climate Sta. Rita Hills appellation is home to a 3,500-square-foot tasting room and event center; sister facilities Firestone Vineyard and Lincourt Vineyards offer tastings of hand-crafted premier vintages. Tasting In TownIn Solvang, tasting rooms are just steps apart, making for convenient palate pleasing options. At Lucas & Lewellen, you might find owners Royce Lewellen and Louis Lucas pour-ing their vintages. Quaff fine wines and craft suds at The Good Life Craft Beer & Wine Cellar. At the Wandering Dog Wine Bar, you can leave your leash behind as you imbibe flights of boutique wines, brews and plenty of seasonal tastings. Vin Hus is the go-to spot for cheeses, wines and Danish specialty foods perfect for your picnic basket.

In Los Olivos, Coquelicot tasting room offers their limited production wines plus lively bocce games The Los Olivos Tasting Room & Wine Shop pours fine hand- crafted wines by small producers specializing in Santa Barbara and Central Coast Pinot Noirs. Los Olivos Wine Merchant is a treasure trove of premium wines focusing on Central Coast appellations as well as select wineries from around the world. In Buellton, sip award-winning beers at Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company or soak up sweeping views and premium wines at Lafond Winery & Vineyards. Carr Vineyards & Winery in Santa Ynez specializes in limited production wines from grapes sourced mainly from vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley. Get Outside! The great outdoors lives up to its name in the Santa Ynez Valley. An abundance of sun-drenched days and mild temps year round make it a breeze to get outside and have fun. Enjoy everything from boating and golfing to hiking and cycling, all within the stunning backdrop of sage-green and golden oak-studded foothills of the Santa Ynez and San Rafael mountain ranges. There’s something here for all ages and interests—the possibilities are as endless as the clear blue valley sky.

On WaterExplore Cachuma Lake Recreation Area for boating, including kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Guided nature cruises are offered year round aboard a 30-passenger pontoon boat; and visit the Neal Taylor Nature Center for hands-on discovery of the natural environment, ecosystems and cultural heritage of Cachuma Lake, upper Santa Ynez River and San Rafael Mountain watershed. For sea breezes, salt water and surf, head to Gaviota State Beach Park, just 11 miles south of Buellton off US Highway 101. The oceanfront park is a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, hiking, camping, surf fishing and scuba diving.

On LandLace up your boots and hit the trail—whether you choose easy, moderate or challenging hikes, you’ll be rewarded with postcard-perfect scenery. The Los Padres National Forest has hundreds of miles of trails that meander through mountains, rivers and streams and includes the federally designated Dick Smith Wilderness and the San Rafael Wilderness. Spring wildflowers provide vibrant splashes of color and photo ops galore throughout the valley, especially off Figueroa Mountain Road. Sedgwick Reserve is a 5,896-acre historic ranch that offers a range of seasonal guided hikes and programs as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. Cachuma Lake Recreation Area has easy to moderate trails and Saturday docent-led nature hikes. Reserve ahead and stay overnight in campgrounds, yurts and cabins. Feeling energetic? Climb four miles to Gaviota Peak for an awe-in-spiring view of the Pacific coastline. Or look for a seasonal waterfall that caps off an easy 15-minute hike at Nojoqui Falls County Park.

On HorsebackThe Santa Ynez Valley is known in the equestrian world for its horse ranches, with a focus on quarter horses, thoroughbred and Arabian breeds, as well as respected training, breeding and veterinary facilities. Saddle up at Rancho Oso Resort, bordered by the Los Padres National Forest and the Santa Ynez River, for year-round horseback riding on a variety of trails, with or without an overnight stay. Experienced wranglers make rides special for beginners and seasoned riders alike. Vino Vaqueros combines horseback riding through pastoral vineyards and wine tasting for a one-of-a-kind experience. Also nearby is Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch, where you can see 34-inch horses prance around the grassy meadows of the 20-acre high-tech training area.

On WheelsThe Santa Ynez Valley is known for its world-class bicycling (road and mountain), and it’s easy to see why—year-round blue skies, warm sun, quiet country roads, spectacular scenery and challenging climbs. Several 25/50/100-mile amateur cycling rides are held throughout the year and the area proudly hosted the Individual Time Trial stage of the professional cyclists’ Amgen Tour of California in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. Many pro bicycling teams train on valley roads and mountain passes; amateur training camps are held here as well. Take a spin around the bicycle-friendly village of Solvang in a four-wheeled surrey cycle (and maybe stop for a well-earned picnic) or explore even farther on a bicycle from Solvang’s Wheel Fun Rentals. Rent a bike for every-one in the family at Dr. J’s Bicycle Shop in Solvang—choose from specialized road, mountain and hybrid bikes galore. O

Stars After DarkStars are not only in the clear night sky around the area but also can be found in one-of-a-kind venues that brighten eve-nings with top-notch dining, dancing and live entertainment.

In Santa Ynez, the Chumash Casino Resort features 24/7 gaming action including poker, blackjack and slots plus the Samala Showroom (1,300 seats for unobstructed views) playing host to top headline entertainers such as Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Boz Scaggs, LL Cool J to the Moscow Ballet, world championship boxing contests, exciting monthly bingo events, dances and more. Also in Santa Ynez, the Maverick Saloon & Dance Hall has live country-western and rock music, dancing, lessons, free concerts on the deck year-round; Ranch & Reata Roadhouse features popular country-western bands accompanied by signature cocktails, local wines, beers and “contemporary cowboy cuisine.” Tales from the Tavern is a seasonal, mid-week concert series featuring singers & songwriters (traditionally at the Maverick Saloon); Vineyard House Restaurant features jazz on the outdoor deck in the summer.

2014 marks the 50th season of the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (PCPA) Theaterfest in Solvang— the only professional resident theater company on the Central California coast. From June-September, nights alight with world-class theatrical productions (including Noises Off,

Forever Plaid and Oklahoma!) in the 700-seat open-air Solvang Festival Theater (which hosts many other concerts and events year-round such as the Nativity Pageant, Halloween Haunted House and Nashville Nights.)

Dozens more after dark options await throughout the area. In Buellton, Avant Tapas & Wine, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. and Standing Sun Winery offer a variety of live music and entertainment on weekends; Winner’s Circle Lounge at Santa Ynez Valley Marriott highlights big screen sports and happy hours and Parks Plaza Theatre screens first-run flicks daily.

In Los Olivos, Firestone Vineyards hosts free outdoor concerts on Friday evenings in the summer. Free Outdoor Movies are Friday nights from June-September in Solvang Park & Buellton’s River View Park.

In Solvang, Music on the Green at New Frontiers offers free summertime Thursday afternoon concerts and free Third Wednesday organizers offer entertainment in Solvang Park. Raising Glasses . . . of Beer, Wine & SpiritsThe saying that “it takes a lot of beer to make great wine” is true around these parts. Three major players in California craft beer make their brews in the heart of Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. In Buellton, since 1996, Firestone Walker Brewing Company and Barrelworks offers the Taproom showcasing their gold medal-winning beers plus gourmet American cuisine. Also in Buellton, since 2010, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company in a renovated warehouse has a popular onsite tasting room emphasizing local ingredients as well as offering tasty bites & live music. Solvang Brewing Company is located in a completely restored windmill, has tastings in view of the barrels, a bar/restaurant and entertainment. Valley Brewers in Solvang supports burgeoning home brewers with supplies and classes.

In conjunction with National Craft Beer Week, the third annual Buellton Brewfest is set for May 3, 2014 at River View Park. The first legal distillery to open in Santa Barbara County since prohibition emerged in 2013 in Buellton. Ascendant Spirits is hand-crafting small batches of whis-key, vodka and other spirits using the best American grains and fresh, local organic produce. Ascendant Spirits is located adjacent to Figueroa Mountain Brewery on one side and Terravant Wine Company on the other, creating an ideal scenario for tasting some premium adult beverages. A free local “Craft Beer Trail Map” including additional beer tast-ing spots is available at www.VisitTheSantaYnezValley.com and copies can be obtained at the Solvang Visitors Center (1639 Copenhagen Drive).

Family Play TimeThere’s plenty of room to run, jump, play and experience family fun all around the area. Pedal powered action is a top pick: cruise around by cycles available for rental daily at Wheel Fun Rentals or from Dr. J’s Bicycle Shop in Solvang or Santa Barbara Wine Country Tours in Santa Ynez. For a two-horse powered tour, hop aboard the Solvang Trolley (also known as the Honen)—a historic wooden streetcar pulled by a pair of impressive draft horses. If you’re feeling really adventurous, how about two-wheeled adventure aboard a Segway of Solvang tour? To visit some fascinating fauna such as ostriches, emus, alpacas and miniature horses, check out the insider info on page 32. Local museums frequently offer programs for kids, be sure to ask. Take an easy, family-friendly 15-minute hike to a waterfall at Nojoqui Falls County Park. All public parks around the area have free admission and are open daily sunrise to sunset. Solvang’s Hans Christian Andersen Park is a woodsy green space with picnic areas, tennis courts, a playground and free Skate Park for boarders; and the whimsical playground and ball field at Sunny Fields Park is a family favorite.(See listings on page 10).

In a surreal corner of California’s coast, romance runs deeply as if penned by Old World authors of fairytale and adventure.Farm-to-table, grape-to-glass valleys thrive mere minutes from kitchens along State Street. Dreams fi nd foundation in a cityfashioned of stucco and red tile. By name, it’s known as Santa Barbara.
