Podoconiosis• Countries in Africa, Central America, and Asia. • Countries both have volcanic pasts and are in Rural

locations, devoted to farming. • Over four million are effected worldwide (many

working as barefoot farmers in the irritant mineral red clay)

• When farmers repetitively work on the soil every day with no protection, inflammation begins within the lymph system in the leg. Then, foot swelling follows and eventually, elephantitis.

• Hookworm is a parasite, meaning it lives off other living things.

• Infects 1 in 4 people in the world.• Developing nations in the tropics and subtropics as a result

of faulty sanitation.• abdominal pain, cramps, fever, nausea, appetite loss and

itchy rashes.• Hookworm causes intrauterine growth restriction,

prematurity, and low birth weight in newborns. • Slow growth and mental development from losing a lot of

iron and protein.

Schistosomiasis

• Affects 200 million people worldwide and its highest prevalence is in school-aged children. Infection occurs when skin comes in contact with contaminated water, allowing the worms to enter the skin.

• Infection can cause anemia, malnutrition, and learning difficulties.

It’s simple! Giving one single person a pair of shoes and proper sanitation will change their life forever.
