CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish June 2, 2013 Solemnity of the Most Holy BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, It is interesting that something so fundamental and basic to survival as food, is also something that is essential to marking special moments and celebrations in our lives. St. Pius X Parish is no stranger to this phenomenon. It seems that there is no shortage of both celebrations and food here, even if we have scaled back some. It is appropriate, though, to link the two because there is sacredness to this link. That is why our Lord established the Eucharist as a source of our salvation. One-and-a-half weeks ago, I joined our parish’s Women of Faith study group on a pilgrimage to the San Antonio missions as a part of the observances of the Year of Faith. The objective of the trip was to visit the mission churches that were so instrumental in establishing the foundation of faith in South Texas during a time when there was still no inkling of a union called The United States. We toured four missions and offered specific prayers at each. At the largest, Mission San José, we celebrated the Eucharist where generations of faithful have done so for almost 300 years. Following the Mass, the entire group of 14 gathered for a meal at a local eating establishment. We opted for Mexican food. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting down with these faith-filled women and was glad to get to know them better. I chose to eat the chicken mole. It was rather savory, with just the right amount of spiciness. Even though it was quite delicious, it couldn’t compare to the very first mole I ever had. I was still a seminarian at the time. I was spending a month in Cuernavaca, Mexico studying Spanish with other seminarians during the summer. We each stayed in the homes of local families for immersion in the language. One day, the mother of my host family decided to take me to an acquaintance’s house for lunch. The house actually turned out to be a corrugated metal shack with a dirt floor on the outskirts of town. The woman of the house graciously invited me in and asked if I wanted to try chicken mole. Mole is a thick, rich, chocolate- tinged sauce that is poured over the chicken. Being adventuresome, I said, “Sure!” I sat and waited at the simple table and took in the sight around me through the open doorway outside. After some time, the woman came back and served me a plate of the most fabulous home-cooked chicken mole you could ever imagine. I often wondered if she

Dear Friends,

It is interesting that something so fundamental and basic to survival as food, is also something that is essential to marking special moments and celebrations in our lives. St. Pius X Parish is no stranger to this phenomenon. It seems that there is no shortage of both celebrations and food here, even if we have scaled back some. It is appropriate, though, to link the two because there is sacredness to this link. That is why our Lord established the Eucharist as a source of our salvation.

hadn’t gone out behind the shed and slaughtered the family chicken just for me! In any event, the meal impressed a lasting memory upon my mind.

I was struck by the magnanimous gesture of generosity on her part. The woman was obviously quite poor, as evidenced by the squalid living conditions. Nevertheless, she opened her heart to me as her guest, and I experienced the blessing of her love through the meal that she prepared. I likewise experienced a deepening bond with the group that I shared a meal with during the mission trip a little over a week ago.

Perhaps that is part of the reason that food and meals are so much a part of special celebrations. there is a kind of bonding in a shared meal. There is a personal investment, a kind of love, if you will, that is poured into the preparation. There is also a unity that is experienced as we share in this action of being nourished. It seems to me that there is nothing arbitrary about Jesus instituting the Eucharist as the source of grace for our journey toward the Eternal Banquet. In the sharing of this meal, we become sharers in the mystery of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. Therefore, we participate in the gift of Christ’s redemption. In the sharing of this heavenly food, we are bound together in love and we become one body in Christ. If anything, let us

be more conscious of the gift that the Eucharist is as we celebrate today’s feast of Corpus Christi - the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

More details will come soon.

School NewsBy Principal Kathy Clark

The last week of school was short and bittersweet. We came back from a 3-day weekend for two days of school. Those two days were filled with award ceremonies, graduations and end-of-school parties. For the retiring principal, there were many “finals.”

On Tuesday, our 6th graders and K-5 students graduated, and the K-3 and K-4 classes had their awards ceremonies following the 8:15 a.m. Mass. For the 6th graders, it was their final day of their elementary school. More than half of them have attended St. Pius since kindergarten or earlier. Four of them, Kayla Abbott, Toby Johnson, Jacob Lugo and Mathew Lutz, started here when they were 3 years old! They all received a plaque that read, “Once a Blue Jay always a Blue Jay.” After the awards ceremony, the students attended a reception in the Youth Center where they enjoyed refreshments and watched a video about their days at St. Pius X. Afterwards, they were whisked off in a limousine to their end-of-school party. It was a fun day for them. We will miss these students next year as they enter into a new phase of their lives, middle school.

The K-5 students had their graduation ceremony with the K-3 and K-4 classes after the 6th grade graduation. Watching 25 little children in graduation gowns and hats stroll down the aisle was a sight to see! Their well-rehearsed practice using eye contact, a firm handshake with the correct hand, and saying “thank-you” paid off as they received their awards in front of their parents at church. In twelve short years these same students will go through the same motions again as high school graduates.

On Wednesday, our 1st through 5th grade students attended their Mass and awards ceremonies. At the end of the ceremony, the top student from each class was presented with the Principal’s Award for having the highest overall average for the year. Congratulations go to Caitlin Tatsch (1st grade), Elizabeth Arnolds (2nd grade), Kyler Ross (3rd grade), Mary Arnolds (4th grade), Sarah Grace O’Donnell (5th grade), and Taylor Skrobarczyk (6th grade). There were many students who were awarded A Honor Roll and A/B Honor Roll for the year, and 14 students who had Perfect Attendance for the year. One 6th grader, Matthew Lutz, received an award for Perfect Attendance since K-4! That means he did not miss a day of school for the past 8 years! That’s quite an accomplishment!

There have been many “finals” lately for this retiring principal of St. Pius X Catholic School: the final “Monday Note,” the final Morning Prayer with the staff, the final weekly Mass with the children, and now, the final church bulletin news. I have to say that I’ve had a great 10 years here. The reality of actually leaving began to set in during the past two weeks as I said to myself with each passing event, “That’s the last time I will do this or do that!” We have a wonderful school here in our parish and I will miss it dearly. It is truly a Blue Ribbon School in every way, not only because of

its strong academics, but also because of its bright students, fabulous teachers and supportive and involved parents. I plan to stay as involved in the school and parish as I can, and will help out wherever I’m needed, so I am not saying “good-bye.”

I thank Msgr. Shirley who hired me 10 years ago, for believing in me and trusting me to run this school. It has been a pleasure to work with him and also with Fr. Paul. I also thank our parishioners who have been so supportive of the school all these years. The support of the pastor and the parishioners is vital to any Catholic school’s success. May God continue to bless you each and every day!
