.בעבור שבלי נדר אתן צדקה בעדם כר זה תהיינה נפשותיהם צרורות בצרור החיים בש

I shall give to charity on their behalf. As reward for this, may their souls

be bound in the Bond of Life The earliest source for Yizkor is in the Midrash Tanchuma, which

cites the custom of remembering the departed and pledging charity

on their behalf on Yom Kippur.

He Shall Remember. This is the meaning of the word “Yizkor.” In

this prayer, we implore G-d to remember the souls of our relatives

and friends that have passed on.

When we recite Yizkor, we renew and strengthen the connection

between us and our loved one, bringing merit to the departed souls,

elevating them in their eternal home.

The main component of Yizkor is our private pledge to give charity

following the holiday in honor of the deceased. By giving charity, we

are performing a positive physical deed in this world, something that

the departed can no longer do.

The greatest gift we can give to a our dearly departed is doing our

utmost to perpetuate Judaism. It has been shown through study

after study that the most effective way to insure Jewish continuity is

a Jewish education. Please take the opportunity this year to

commit your pledge to our synagogue, our day school, or another

local Jewish institution that promotes the study of Torah, the

lifeblood of the Jewish people.

Rabbi’s Thoughts Rabbi Ephraim Epstein

Yizkor

A holiday is a time for celebration. A celebration is incomplete without understanding its origins. Every family has its own unique origins as well as collective origins shared with the rest of the Jewish people. As we remember and enjoy the Biblical miracles and commandments that shape the holiday(s), we pause for a few moments to acknowledge and focus on the living memory of our beloved ones. We look forward to the ultimate redemption-may it come soon when we will be reunited with our loved ones. As the words of the prophet state: “May Death be erased, and may G-d wipe away all tears from our faces”.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yizkor – literally translated as May He/G-d remember……….. Although G-d never forgets, we beseech Him to listen to our remembrance of those that have left this world and to grant them peace and merit because of our efforts. Yizkor- I remember the love that they showered upon us. Yizkor- I remember the look on his face. Yizkor- I can’t believe it’s been so long. Yizkor- I can still see her sitting there at her place.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A letter I would write if I could:

My dear _______, Yom Tov is not the same without you! We are enjoying all of the family recipes and singing all of the family niggunim-tunes. I am sure that you are getting true nachas-

from seeing the children as they participate with such delight. Thank you for all that you have done for us. We are who we are because of you. Please continue to be a Maylitz Yosher on our behalf. Good Yom Tov- ____________

A Psalm of David. Hashem is my shepherd, I shall not lack. In lush meadows He lays me down, beside tranquil waters He leads me. he restores my soul. He leads me on paths of justice for His Name’s sake. Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in view of my tormentors. You anointed my head with oil, my cups overflows. May only goodness and kindness pursue me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the House of Hashem for long days.

Hashem, what is man that You recognize him? The son of a frail human that You reckon with him?

Man is like a breath, his days are like a passing shadow.

(Psalm 144:3-4)

Psalm 91

Whoever sits in the refuge of the Most High, he shall dwell in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Hashem, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, I will trust in Him.’ That He will deliver you from the ensnaring trap and from devastating pestilence. With His pinion He will cover you, and beneath His wings you will be protected; shield and armor is His truth. You shall not be afraid of the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day; nor the pestilence that walks in gloom, nor the destroyer who lays waste at noon. Let a thousand encamp at your side and a myriad at your right hand, but to you they shall not approach. You will merely peer with your eyes and you will see the retribution of the wicked. Because [you said] ‘You, Hashem, are my refuge’; you have made the Most High your dwelling place. No evil will befall you, nor will any plague come near your tent. He will charge His angels for you, to protect you in all your ways. On your palms they will carry you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. Upon the lion and the viper you will tread; you will trample the young lion and the serpent. For he has yearned for Me and I will deliver him, I am with him in distress. I will release him and I will honor him. I will satisfy him with long life and show him My salvation. I will satisfy him with long life and show him My salvation.

After reciting Yizkor, it is customary to recite the following prayer(s).

For a Man

God, full of mercy, Who dwells on high, grant proper rest on the wings of the Divine Presence in the lofty levels of the holy and the pure ones, who shine like the glow of the firmament, for the soul of (name of the deceased), who went on to his world, because, without making a vow, I will contribute to tzedaka in remembrance of his soul. May his resting place be in the Garden of Eden - therefore may the Master of mercy shelter him in the shelter of His wings for eternity; and may He bind his soul in the Bond of Life. Hashem is his heritage, and may he repose in peace on his resting place. Now let us say: Amen.

For a Woman

God, full of mercy, Who dwells on high, grant proper rest on the wings of the Divine Presence in the lofty levels of the holy and the pure ones, who shine like the glow of the firmament, for the soul of (name of the deceased), who went on to her world, because, without making a vow, I will contribute to tzedaka in remembrance of her soul. Hashem is her heritage, and may she repose in peace on her resting place. Now let us say: Amen.

For More than One Person

God, full of mercy, Who dwells on high, grant eternal rest on the wings of the Divine Presence, in the levels of the Holy and pure ones who shine like the radiance of the heavens, to the souls of (names of

the deceased) who have gone on to their world, because I have pledged to tzedaka for the remembrance of their souls. May their rest be in paradise. May the Master of compassion therefore protect them forever in the shelter of His wing, and bind their souls in the Bond of Eternal Life. God is their inheritance, and may they rest in peace in their places; and let us say: Amen.

נשמות זכרתה סדר

For Members of the Israeli Defense Force:

May God remember the souls of the soldiers of the Israeli Defense Force, who gave their lives for the sanctification of the Name, and for the conquest of the Land; who died a heroic death in the War of Independence and the battlefields of Sinai, in missions of defense and safety. They were quicker than eagles and stronger than lions, as they volunteered to help the people, and with their pure blood, soaked the clods of our holy earth and the deserts of Sinai. The memory of their self-sacrifice and heroic deeds will never perish from us. May their souls be bound in the Bond of Life with the souls of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and with the souls of other Jewish heroes and martyrs who are in the Garden of Eden. And let us say: Amen.

For Martyrs of the Holocaust

God, full of compassion, Who dwells on high, Defender of widows and Father of orphans, grant proper rest on the wings of the Divine Presence, in the lofty levels of the holy and pure ones, who shine like the radiance of the heavens, to the souls of the Holy Martyrs, who were killed, and who were burned, and who were strangled, and who were buried alive at the hands of the Nazis and their helpers. Holy and pure were they all, among them scholars and saints as majestic in Torah as the cedars of Lebanon. May their rest be in the Garden of Eden. Therefore, Master of Mercy, may their souls be bound in the Bond of Life. Hashem is their heritage. May He remember their martyrdom for us, and may their merit stand for us and for all Israel. Earth, do not cover their blood! Do not silence their cries! In their merit, may the scattered ones of Israel be gathered to their possession. May the martyrs’ righteousness forever be before Hashem. May they repose in their resting places and let us say: Amen.

As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as We

remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength; We remember them.

When we are lost and sick at heart; We remember them.

When we have decisions that are difficult to make; We remember them.

When we have joy we crave to share; We remember them.

When we have achievements that are based on theirs; We remember them.

For as long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as,

We remember them.
