Blessed are You, our God, who has created Us to reflect Your infinite splendor

For You have put eternity into our hearts,

The gift to see with the eye of memory,

And implanted within us a vision of life everlasting.

Life is precious. We should not defer to tomorrow, the love we

can give or receive today. Yom Kippur and this Memorial

booklet is a powerful reminder of the values and stories of our

loved ones. We are blessed to have had our loved ones in our

lives and to have been loved by them. All the love they shared

with us is ours to keep, to nurture and to share with others.

Our Memorial booklet is not just a listing of names, it is a

touchstone which enables us to remember the past and shape

our future. What did our loved ones share with us in life? What

do we remember of them? What values were important to

them and have become important to us? What kind of strength

and courage do we gain from the memories of our loved ones

which help us achieve our goals and dreams?

While their passing leaves us sad because they are no longer

here, their memories give us the strength to face the year to

come. May their memories be a blessing to us always.

Malachi 3:16–18 says, “Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one

another, and the LORD gave attention and heard it, and a book of

remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who

esteem His name.

Remembrance of Names

Because our beloved departed have enshrined themselves deeply in our

hearts—because their lives were a benediction to all of us—because

through the nobility of their living and the quality of their character, they

inspired us to live worthily and nobly—the dead, whose souls we

commemorate today shall not glide swiftly into the depths of oblivion. We

shall hold them long in

cherished and consecrated memory.

We inscribe their names in this, our Memorial Book, as a token of

our everlasting love and affection.

A Heritage of Memories

May the memories which we cherish

And lovingly now recall

Inspire us so to live

That we too may bequeath

A heritage of precious memories

To those whom we shall leave behind.

In tribute to our departed

May we enrich the lives we touch.

May we share and preserve the faith

Which our mourners will now affirm,

As they rise to sanctify God’s name

In the hallowed words of the Kaddish.

The Domain of Memory

Memory is a master artist,

painting indelible pictures

upon the mind’s canvas.

Time piffers our years,

our hopes, even our griefs.

But it cannot cross the threshold

which leads to the domain of memory.

Here we resuscitate the past.

Here we gather once more

water lilies that died,

but have come to life again

in the pool of remembrance.

defying explanation, then death ceases to be a

radical, absolute negation of what

life stands for.

For both life and death are aspects of a greater

mystery, the mystery of being, the mystery of

creation. Over and above the preciousness of

creation.

Death, then, is not simply man's coming to an

end. It is also entering a beginning.

Lord, what are we humans, that you have regard for us, Mere mortals, that

Though they are gone from us we are grateful for the blessings they

brought and were to us. Now, by giving to others the love which our

departed gave to us, we can partly repay the debt we owe them.

We are sustained and comforted by the thought that the goodness which

they brought into our lives remains an enduring blessing which we can

bequeath to our descendants.

We can still serve our departed by serving You. We can show our devotion

to them by our devotion to those ideals which they cherished.

O God of Love, make us worthy of the love we have received by teaching us

to love You with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our might,

and to spread the light of Your divine love on all whose lives touch ours.

Give us strength to live honorably and, when our time comes, to die

serenely, cheered by the confidence that You will not permit our lives to be

wasted, but will bring all our worthy strivings to fulfillment.
