Why choose this course?In the 2012 National Student Survey, 90%of our students were satisfied with howenthusiastic our teaching was. You couldgo on an Erasmus exchange to CharlesUniversity in Prague, to look atsociological issues from an internationalperspective. You’ll also develop a range oflife skills to enhance your CV, to stand outin the job market.

About the courseEverybody has ideas about society –poverty is due to individuals’ laziness;

What you’ll coverracist attitudes are disappearing; womenhave the same opportunities as men;religion is a good thing (or a source ofviolence). The difficulty is, how can weknow for sure? This course will transformyour understanding of the social worldand give you the confidence, knowledgeand skills to gain an accurateunderstanding of what is really happeningin our society and why.

How you’ll learnYou’ll be taught through lectures,seminars and film and video. You’ll alsogain skills in interviewing people andanalysing facts and figures, which areboth highly valued by employers. You’llgain research skills enabling you toconduct interviews, surveys and analyseand interpret visual imagery. You’ll usethese in your own research projects whenyou look into the real world of society andexplore an area of your interest. You’ll alsohave the opportunity to complete a workplacement. You’ll be assessed in differentways to give you the chance to show yourindividual strengths and abilities.

Your careerYou could work in social services,education, criminal justice, welfareservices, national and local government,counselling, charities and the voluntarysector. You may want to become acommunity development worker, equalityand diversity officer, lecturer, teacher,police officer, probation officer, policyadvisor or researcher. You could work in ahands on research or policy capacity withyoung people, families, victims of abuse,faith groups, refugees or adults withlearning disabilities for example. Thepeople skills which you’ll gain mean acareer in management would be suited toyou too.
