Cortina, Italy Trip Report - by Randy Ridgwayby Randy Ridgwayby Randy Ridgwayby Randy Ridgway Eighteen more adventurous Indianapolis Ski Club members joined 24 other OVSC members for the annual European Ski Trip to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy from March 6 to March 14. The trip had originally been planned to go to Brides-Les-Bains, France and Les 3 Vallees but was switched by the OVSC International Trips VP last summer to Cortina, where some of us had been in 2002. Cortina is one of Europe’s most beautiful ski destinations, as the town sits in a forested valley surrounded by the spectacular Dolomite Alps. We flew via New York JFK airport to Venice’s Marco Polo airport, where a new terminal had been built since our trip in 2002. Cortina is located north of Venice and is two hours away by bus. As before, we stayed at the Hotel Splendid Venezia. The hotel is centrally located, and Cortina is small enough that you can walk about anywhere, or you can ride the free skier shuttle around town. We arrived early Sunday afternoon and explored the town, rented skis and bought our ski passes before dinner. Our hotel package included breakfasts and dinners. Monday broke with clear blue skies and cold tempera-tures. We skied at Faloria and Cristallo our first day. It was surprising that so few skiers were out, especially considering the fantastic corduroy snow conditions. The cable car to Faloria starts near the bus station and is easy and quick to get to from our hotel. After spending most of the morning at Faloria, we skied down to the north base and crossed the road to the Cristallo ski area. We made a few more runs on Cristallo before lunch. Our OVSC hosts had planned a late afternoon welcome party for us at Col Druscie on Tofana mountain where we joined the G.A.S. ski club of California for the welcome party. They told us that G.A.S. stands for Grumpy Asian Skiers! But they certainly knew how to party! Tuesday we skied on Tofana where we had been the evening before. It was just frigid, windy, cloudy, and mis-erable except …. The snow was still GREAT! Tofana holds the annual Cortina women's’ World Cup downhill every January, where Lindsey Vonn had won just before Vancouver. Wednesday should have been an easy day. We took a day trip by bus to ski Kronplatz, near Brunico. We planned to ski a little, have a leisurely lunch, and ski a little more. Then John Oberlies exceeded Mach II on our second run and had a Prima Facie ( face first ) crash on boilerplate ice. It was very scary for Eileen Ridgway, Mike King, and our new German friend Stefan who arrived on the scene just as John slid to a stop. After finishing the run on the MASH sled, John got a trip to the hospital, accompanied by Eileen. John has fully recovered (although his helmet has a big crack) and enjoys sharing the story at Kron-splat. John’s friends still enjoyed a nice leisurely lunch, even in his absence. Great friends, eh?

Thursday was to be the day we skied the famous Sella Ronda, a ski route around the Sella Massif ( a huge complex of mountains ) via four intercon-nected mountain passes and four valleys. Turns out we completed only the Semi Ronda. We started in Arraba and finished in Corvarra - just one valley away from our starting point. Oh well, that gives us one more reason to go back. Throughout our week in Cortina, some of our group took advantage of the day tours to Vipiteno, Bolzano, Conegliano, and Venice. It’s a great way to take a day off from skiing and have a great time. Our group split up the last couple of ski days as everyone by now had their own favorite ski area. Some of us had a first-ever experience of being pulled by a horse sleigh! Near the town of Armentarola, there is a half mile stretch up a gradual incline where you pay 2 Euro and grab a rope trailing

behind a horse drawn sleigh. And yes, we sang Jingle Bells. Sunday we were to fly home, but our flight from Venice to New York was cancelled due to high winds in NYC. Thanks to Delta air-lines who provided hotel rooms and two meal vouchers, there was an extra day to spend in Venice. Like so many European ski trips, it helps to bring along equal amounts of flexibility and adventurism. When you have both, you can truly enjoy a different culture, language, and cuisine not found in the U.S. Join us next year in France, the adventure continues…..

Page 3: SOCIALLY SPEAKING - & other stuff you might be …one of Europe’s most beautiful ski destinations, as the town sits in a forested valley surrounded by the spectacular Dolomite Alps.

Twenty-four eager Indy skiers began the week by meeting at the airport but 29 arrived in Beaver Creek. How did this happen? Sim-ple . . . some drove and one flew from Atlanta. Jennifer Rhamy also joined us for a few days . . .good to see you! Since we had an afternoon flight, our arrival at Beaver Creek’s Ridgepoint Townhomes was late, around 9:00 PM, after our usual stop at Apple Jack’s and King Sooper.

The club has stayed at Ridgepoint before, and all agree that it’s still one of the nicest condos we’ve ever stayed at. They are spa-cious, with an additional loft bedroom for the snorers. And even though we had to catch a bus to the slopes each day, it picked us up close to the chairlifts and dropped us off in front of our condo. Doesn’t get any better than that! Also, with dial-a-ride service in the evenings, it was very easy to get places for dinner. There was a nice outdoor hot tub, and robes were provided to wear to the hot tub. It’s a good look. Right, Dr John and Mel?

Our first ski day greeted us with loads of sunshine. Après ski was the welcoming wine & cheese party. Afterwards, we tried to get into the Dusty Boot Saloon for dinner, but because of the Easter crowds, we ate at the Blue Moose instead.

The next 3 days were warm and sunny - typical spring ski con-ditions. Our pizza party was Tuesday at the Highlands Lodge. Thanks to Mel for driving to Avon to pick up the pizzas. And thanks to my condo mates Penny S., Ann D., Martin D., Mike W. and Dick D. who brought the drinks and paper supplies. I

couldn’t have done it without you!

Wednesday was Vail day, and a few of us welcomed Lindsey Vonn home. Since Vail Resorts stopped their bus service from Beaver to Vail, there was a service called “Turtle Bus Bar” providing transporta-tion to/from Vail. Ask John O. about tequila shots served on the bus ride home! The “Bar” part was real!

It snowed all day Thursday, making for a foggy ski day. But Friday was a powder day with 8” of fresh snow! Hallelujah! (But it snowed 4 feet after we left!)

Our bus ride back to the airport was interesting. First, everyone was on the bus and ready to go early! Wow! The highway wasn’t too snowy so we made good time. So we were treated to a stop at REI by our bus driver (who was our same bus driver on the Beaver Creek trip 2 years ago and is from Indiana). And United Airlines was on time for the return flight (worth mentioning). During the flight, the pilot frequently announced the score of the Butler game.

And when it was announced that Butler won, everyone on the plane erupted with cheers. What a great flight back to Indy!

Some memorable highlights of this trip :

· John O’s helmet held together with duct tape (a fall in Italy weeks before)

· Many tried Big Rock Park in Vail’s Blue Sky Basin for the first time.

· Après ski at McCoy’s in Beaver Creek and the Red Lion in Vail.

· On-slope cookies at 3:00 PM and champagne at 3:15.

· For those in the Village on Thursday evening, it was a challenge getting back to the condos - several wrecks closed the icy road .

· Romain D. and Jackson P. ran the NASTAR course for the first time and scored personal bests on their 2nd run. Thus Romain became known as “Rocket Man” .

· Sarah P. ran the NASTAR course for the first time ever and scored platinum for both runs! That’s fast!

· Eric D. found new green ski pants that fit his tall legs . . . something about becoming the Jolly Green Giant!

· Besides being in ski school most of the week, Lou D. and Zoe D. were taught to knit by none other than Priscilla.

· I heard that everyone in Condo 141 (all 11 of them) loved Tom J’s home cooking - complete with wine to match that meatloaf!

· Dinner at Splendido at the Chateau was beyond 5 star - best dinner anywhere!

· Chelsea P. did a great job in ski school and led her parents, brother & grandparents on her “big people mountain”, including in-structions for use of the gondola and coming through the “secret path”.

· The old blue van that Loren R. & Dave A. drove out looked as if it couldn’t have made it . . . but it did. (I heard that it also made it home via Atlanta.)

· There’s some rumor about Howard C’s new white ski poles and that he might be interested in a pink jumpsuit. What’s that all about? Does Joni know?

· The Last Run Party included 2 Summit County members (Joe & Marsha). It was sunny and the ski patrol had to run the cele-brants off the mountain again this year. (They DID clean up after themselves)

Thanks to everyone for being such a great group!

Indianapolis Ski Club Wins Indiana Ski Council Race Weekend! Our Indy Ski Club won the annual Indiana Ski Council Race Weekend competition at Schuss Mountain, Michigan February 20. Under clear blue skies and temperatures in the low thirties the Indy Ski Club had fourteen racers that dominated the day’s competition. The racing competition was held on the Good Knight NASTAR race hill and featured two NASTAR GS courses. Each racer completed two runs on both courses, with the racer’s best time from each course combined to determine rankings. Indianapolis accumulated the most team points to win the Robert Burns Memorial Classic award. Indianapolis also won the Burns Award in 1994 and 2000. ISC club rep Randy Ridgway commented that “we’ve never been able repeat in consecutive years before like the other clubs have, so our goal now is to win again in 2011.” INDY RACERS & AWARDS: Jacob Ault – Junior Male 1st Logan Angelopulos – Junior Male 2nd Macy Gluys – Junior Female 2nd Brianha Angelopulos – Junior Female 3rd Paul Wood – Men’s Legend D Class 1st James Ault – Men’s D Class 1st Beverly Sievers – Women’s Legend D Class 1st Toni Price – Women’s Legend D Class 2nd Wendi Ault – Women’s D Class 1st Toby Angelopulos – Women’s D Class 2nd Melissa Smith – Women’s C Class 1st Merryn Gluys – Women’s Veteran C Class 1st Eileen Ridgway – Women’s Super Veteran C Class 1st Randy Ridgway – Men’s Super Veteran A Class 2nd

Keystone Trip - February 28-March 6 This was the trip that almost wasn’t. The trip was in danger of being canceled right up to the final payment date, and in fact was saved from being a financial loss for the club after the final payment date. The people who came through to save the trip came from unexpected places (not the usual suspects). We were happy to welcome Mike and Beth Miller back to the club after not skiing for 15 years. Their friend, Cheryl Sinkovic, joined the club so she could room with the Millers. Cheryl invited her cousin, Bill Bizjack, from Atlanta GA, and her long time neighbor, Rick White, who now lives in Cleveland, Ohio, to join her on the trip. Who would have imagined that this Rick White, who now works in the steel industry, would be the same Rick White that I worked with in the paper industry over 25 years ago? We had fun reliving old times. Beverly Sievers, her husband, David Harrison, and their friend Toni Price also joined the trip. These three had gone on an Indiana Ski Council trip to Michigan last year and de-cided it was time to try their skiing skills in Colorado. And finally, Peter Lomas from Mooresville, North Carolina joined his brother, Dr. John, on the trip. We hope to we’ll see all nine of these folks back on an Indy Ski Club trip next year. The fact that ski lessons were included on this trip helped 6 of these 9 people make their decisions to go. Joe Summers and Mel Crichton offered a large number of help ranging from a refresher lesson for those who hadn’t skied for a while or were going to be on the new shaped skis for the first time, to bump and powder lessons for the more advanced. A total of 14 different people (out of 20) took advantage of their offer; in fact Susan Neves took several of the lessons. She never passes up a chance to take a lesson and it shows. She is one of the most improved skiers in our club over the last few years. Cheryl Sinkovic and David Harrison are both pretty new skiers and both made great improvement. These ses-sions added a great deal to the fun and the satisfaction of this trip. Thanks Joe and Mel. This trip started with quite a start!! Most of us flew Southwest, but Richard and Marilyn Rader flew United and should have arrived in Denver 1 hour before us. I became concerned when they couldn’t be found at the Denver airport. The phone soon rang, and Marilyn reported that their flight returned to Indianapolis 15 minutes after taking off due to a medi-cal emergency: Richard went to the hospital and thankfully tests found no issues. They caught up with the trip only a day late. (who was the “elderly gentleman” the paramedics were talking about?)

Patrick Swickheimer was our youngest participant. We kidded Patrick about being our “token boarder”. The real question though is how can we, as a club, attract more boarders? If you have ideas let me know. I have noticed that ski resorts often host some kind of medical seminar. I’ve thought, “oh yeah, they sign up and don’t go to the meetings”. I’m just jealous that there were no paper industry seminars at ski resorts. I am happy to say that one of our club, Dr. Bruce Davison, took advan-tage of a medical seminar. (by the way, I watched him closely, and Bruce really did go to the meetings). This was a great trip in many ways: First, we discovered the secret to making Keystone a great ski destination. Stay at River Run Village condos.

Why? It’s convenient! It is an easy walk to the Keystone gondola, and a 3 minute walk to the Summit Stage bus stop. The Summit Stage gets you to A Basin in 12 minutes and to the Breckenridge gondola in 27 minutes. Keystone lift tick-ets are good at all 3 places. A lot of us took advantage of all 3 resorts. Four lines of the local Keystone bus system all stop at River Run. You can get to any restaurant or shop in the Keystone complex in a matter of minutes. We also had great group dynamics on this trip. Lots of us met for lunch at designated places. In several conversations some of us enjoyed hearing Heiko Kaiser and Elvi Mitchell talk about their times growing up in Germany during and after the war. The U.S./Canada hockey game on TV was a big attraction, at least for the guys. We had group dinners in restaurants on the first, fourth and seventh nights. The last dinner was in the Snake River Saloon, in business for 55 years. Our pizza party was the second night at the Lodge at Keystone overlooking the skating rink. Lois Surber cooked up some sloppy joes on the fifth night ,and later everybody pitched in food and drink for a party at the Rader’s, who had the largest and most glamorous condo. All of these gatherings were great fun, with lots of laughter. On their trip evaluation forms, 17 people said they would recom-mend the trip to a friend which, in my book, means they had a good time. Two people didn’t say, so maybe they weren’t sure if they had a good time. One guy did not think there was enough snow for tree skiing. Anyway, I give my thanks to all who went. You were a fun group to be with. I hope to see you all on Indy Ski Club trips

next year. They are going to be really good. - Dick Surber

Whitefish, Montana - March 2010 What a wonderful week of blue sky and sunshine we had in Whitefish for the Club trip!

There were reports of dense fog and sketchy conditions from one of the three past trips, and some of us went west

with fear and trepidation as to what we would experience. It couldn’t have been better - we could have had a little

more snow in the trees and a little less slush at the end of the day. But it was spring time! And the views of Glacier

National Park are to die for.

Thirty-five skiers experienced the Whitefish Lodge at the Lake as new accommodations for the club. The condos

were lovely, the lakeside view was spectacular, the outdoor hot tub was warm, friendly, large, and utilized by all, the

staff were friendly and provided service with a smile. The Lady of the Mountain van and drivers Charlie and Dave

provided transportation to the slopes and into town for dinners, strolling, and shopping. The people of Whitefish

were extremely friendly and pleasant. There was even a “Welcome Indianapolis Ski Club” sign in one store.

There was ample opportunity to “add vertical” as there were virtually no waits for lifts. Because of conditions on the

south face, many skied the less sunny “back side” where we ran across many others on the trip. We even saw Mel and

Cathy whiz by several times !!

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on the slopes while Frank

gave a “rail lesson” and then at our pizza party in the lodge.

Former Club President (now Montana resident) Rick Ward and

wife Laura stopped by to say hello and joined us to ski.

Kay Anderson, our dancing diva, got groups of people together

for dancing at the Blue Moon, where all had a great time! Rudy

Osenbaugh, Steve Hoover, Neil Behrle, Sue Johnson, Alison

Miller, Loren Rasmussen, Steve Airo and Kim Scheid learned

some new salsa steps.

Lunch was officially scheduled at the Summit House; however most of the gang found their way down Toni Matt to

enjoy the atmosphere and gourmet tastes at the Hell Roaring Saloon. The portions were huge and the flavors won-

derful. The Mediterranean Seafood Stew was the best Tom Johnson ever had.

Our friend Steve Airo turned 82 on Friday, March 19. ( EIGHTY-TWO!! And still on the

slopes) Steve has a great smile and is such fun to be around, and he’s a definite role model

for all of us. As if we needed a reason to party on our last night there, we had a pitch of

leftover snacks and a birthday cake to celebrate. Connie and John Miner and Ray Battey

helped host the party. Joe Hankins, Dick Lyle, Don Birt, Dick Verhlulst, Frank Wilder,

Richard Rader, and Jim Guerrettaz joined the rest of the gang for the festivities after a

fantastic week of skiing.

Ardent Butler University basketball fans Marilyn Rader, Randy Lamb, Jim and Vicki Robinson, and Tom and Priscilla

Johnson had “front row” seats in the Lodge Bar to watch Butler beat UTEP. We appreciated the great service and

the great win! Our Purdue professors Sydney Zentall and Bill Shafer were pleased that Purdue was successful on the

court while they mastered the slopes of Whitefish. Bill found ski school to be most helpful.

Loren Rasmussen and Dave Adair drove the blue van all the way to Whitefish to participate in this trip and then me-

andered out west the next week to eventually meet the club in Beaver Creek for the last trip of the year. We were

also joined by Tom Miller’s daughter Alison, who made it from California after some airline difficulties. We were de-

lighted to meet her and hope she will continue to join us on future trips.

Jerry Sanford fell on the third run of the first day and hurt his back. Fortunately, a friend lives nearby and Jerry

spent a couple of days at his home and touring the area. Our two non-skiers Lois Surber and Maetta Craig enjoyed

the shops in town, the scenery, and relaxed in the

Lodge while their husbands Dick and John played in

the snow.

It was a wonderful western week in the snow and

will be remembered as a GREAT TRIP!! by all who

were fortunate to be with the Indianapolis Ski Club

at Whitefish, Montana in March 2010..

Outgoing Presidents Report As I step down from serving as your President this past year, I’d like for you to know that I’ve very much enjoyed serving along with a fantastic group of officers and trip leaders who made it a very suc-cessful year for the club and who deserve your gratitude for serving unselfishly. Over the past months we’ve had a long list of fantastic events and lots of wonderful ski trips to exciting destinations. Our dues remain low, our membership is stable, our trip participation is way up, the club has operated this past year at slightly above break-even, and our overall financial condition remains strong. Lots of folks deserve the credit for these accomplishments and we can all take pride in the fact that we have one of the best ski clubs around! My heartfelt ‘thanks’ goes out to everyone who contributed time and effort to keep things running smoothly this past year. Joan Naffziger, the club’s new President, and some new officers will be taking the reins beginning in early May, and I know that the club remains in good hands.

Look forward to seeing everyone at some upcoming club events – have a great summer!! Jim Robinson
