1858 Jameson family create their own private 12 hole course
at northern end of Portmarnock peninsula.
History of Portmarnock Links
1893, Christmas EveW.C Pickeman and George Ross rowed over from Sutton to the peninsula of Portmarnock to explore the possibility of creating a Golf Links on the southern end.
1894 Prior to 1894 the land was used by a local farmer Ignatius Byrne to graze cattle.
1992 A consortium involving Mark McCormack (IMG) and Sir Tony O’Reilly began work on the course in 1992, Champion Golfer Bernhard Langer was the designer and it opened for play in 1995 with three of the original Jameson Holes incorporated in the design (8th, 9th and 15th).
1997 Host to many amateur and professional events including - Southern PGA Championship 1997, Governor Hugh L Carey Challenge Cup 1998 and 2009, Special Olympics World Games 2003, and the Ladies Irish Open 2008 and 2009.
1894The southern end was ideal golfing ground so when
approached, John Jameson readily agreed to lease the land for golfing purposes at moderate rent. In 1894
Portmarnock Golf Club and course was opened for play, John Jameson was made President and their private course
was no longer used for play.
1990 Gerry Buckley, a property developer from London brokered
a deal with Ignatius for the land and golf was once again destined to be played over the 160 acres.
Highly ranked, the course is seen as a welcome addition to the championship links land of North County Dublin, which
includes Portmarnock, The Island and The Royal Dublin Golf Clubs.
Portmarnock LINKS
Bernhard Langer is a German professional golfer, he is a two-time Masters Champion and was one of the world’s leading golfers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1986, he became the sport’s first official number one ranked player. After turning fifty, he established himself as one of the most successful players on PGA Tour Champions and has won ten Senior Major Championships. Alongside renowned American architect Stan Eby, Bernhard Langer has designed a course that has been described by Golf World Magazine as “everything a links course should be” with rolling fairway and unforgiving rough. Portmarnock Links is not only a stunning golf course but a piece of Irish history.
