Comedys easy to know when youve got it right because the audience laughs, says a reflective Shaun Micallef of his bread and butter.

Its honestly the easiest thing to be proved or disproved. Dramas a bit vaguer. Drama you

can get away with less or more because it can be grey. But if comedys not funny its dead, its nothing.

On a Wednesday morning at ABCs writing hub in leafy Elsternwick the veteran comedian is sitting in an ordinary office. At first its hard to separate Micallef from the swag of erratic and oddball characters that became his trademark.

Unmasked, Micallef is sincere, articulate, and self-deprecating.

Hes casually dressed and sporting a bushy beard set to be shed before he steps behind the news chair for the third series of his satirical news and current affairs program, Mad As Hell.

Micallef confesses he didnt bother following news for much of last year and only came up to speed over the past few months.

Theres a new government in. I dont know if you knew that, he quips.

The nature of the show means that it needs to be topical and as up-to-date as can be. Its recorded Tuesday night and goes to air Wednesday night. In the space of a day, hopefully nothing major happens.

Mind you were not a real news service so it doesnt really matter, he laughs.

Asked to describe the series, Micallef says its a squint and youll think its a news program sort of show, declaring almost apologetically that he reckons it actually looks better than a lot of real news programs.

He suggests theres no line he wont cross for a laugh but concedes some topics covered in the second series made him cringe.

There were certain harder jokes about the world which seemed mean-spirited when you put them in front of a live audience.

The shift in thinking is one of the major reasons politics has become the shows pet topic. Which, lets face it, never really deals with anything majorly important, he says.

Micallef believes people like Tony Abbott and Bill Shorten are fair game.

[But] if youre gonna make a joke I think it should be about what theyve done rather than who they are or appearances or anything. That is by and large how we approach things. Im not sure we take cheap shots at people. Hopefully we dont.

Mind you, on a slow news day, why not, he says with a chuckle.

The 51-year-old was born in Adelaide to an Irish mother and a Maltese father and was drawn to comedy.

I was a kid who was attracted to comedy. I liked watching Jerry Lewis, for example.

Id then go and amuse my friends or my family by doing an impression of him or something that was like it. So I absorbed a lot of that.

Its hard to tease out any cultural contributions to it, he says of his family life.

Laughter was pretty highly valued. I had a funny uncle and a funny grandfather. Oddly enough, I got most of my approach from my father who was very straight.

Micallef performed throughout his teenage years and at university but went on to become an insurance lawyer.

I never really considered it [comedy] was a sensible career or even job. I certainly didnt think I could sustain myself and an eventual family from it. Also, I dont like actors. I dont like the idea of being an actor.

In hindsight, his late start would prove a blessing in disguise.

I made all the mistakes I could have made and embarrassed myself by and large in my 20s away from the television camera. Then when I was about 31 thats when

I turned up on TV.Micallef ventured to Melbourne in the early 90s when he first gained recognition as a cast

member on cult sketch comedy show Full Frontal, his most famous character the punch-drunk boxer Milo Kerrigan, still fondly remembered today.

A string of credits over the next two decades has included his beloved show

The Micallef Program, a stint on Sea Change as Warwick Munro, and hosting game show Talkin Bout Your Generation and The Logies. Hes also written two books, and even played horse trainer Lee Freedman in the movie The Cup.

I wouldnt like to have never had a crack at it, Micallef says. Im glad I did it. Id hate to think that Id be sitting there bitterly watching

television thinking I could do better than that.The father of three admits he couldnt

have foreshadowed the heights his career would reach.

That Im a person on camera is a bit of a surprise and unusual. Im not entirely sure that I would lead with that. On my tax returns I write occupation writer. Thats what I am. Im a writer-performer. Im not a performer- writer. Im not an actor.

Micallef argues hes not a workaholic but acknowledge finding it difficult to take a breather. Theres no legitimate hobbies to speak of, other than an appreciation of

film, and spending time with family, which usually consists of hopping in the car with his boys

and heading down to a comic book store in Coburg on weekends.

My kids make me laugh. I tend to laugh at stuff thats got nothing to do with comedy. Comedy is the re-creation of those moments that I have in real life.

From the outside looking in you get the impression Micallef is happy with his lot in life.

I know enough about the business that at some point you approach the end of what is your shelf life and you go do something else. When Im no longer telegenic enough therell be a stage where it will be better for me to move behind the camera and produce and direct and write; which I do.

That day seems a while off for now with the third instalment of Mad As Hell chugging along and a

fourth planned. Im always surprised when something lasts more than one episode, Micallef jokes. You go to a third series and thats gravy. \

Insurance company research shows that 60 per cent of burglars gain access to a property either through

a house or garage door. So securing the doors is a good place to start.

The reason doors are so popular is that windows are noisier and going through the roof is riskier. The

first requirement is to have a solid-core security door that is professionally installed.

Meanwhile, screen doors are particularly vulnerable. Make sure your door is more than just a modified fly

screen that can be easily manipulated with a screwdriver. To make a fly screen secure, you need marine-

grade stainless steel mesh, because its harder to penetrate. And in the case of doors, they should

Statistics show that 10 per cent of all homes are without deadlocks. Deadlocks are important because

they serve a dual function. First, they make it harder to enter a property. But, secondly, and just as

About once a year I get a hankering for the great outback vastness, and theres no better way to satisfy it than to drive

to Perth. What other national highway gives you 2350 kilometres between traffic lights? And 147 kilometres without a bend? And doubles as a runway here and there?

Theres a world-famous bird observatory out here, Skylab crashed here, old telegraph stations have been engulfed by sand. There are dingoes, brumbies, emus, wedge-tailed eagles and kangaroos. You can see whales from jagged coastal cliffs, go for days without mobile coverage, meet fruit-fly inspectors and pay more than two bucks for a litre of fuel. The Hume Freeway this aint.

So when Mazda unveiled its new 3, I asked if I could drive one to Perth. It didnt miss a beat, but taut suspension meant it did miss a kangaroo.

This is a nice thing. It handles surprisingly well, rides easily and remains comfortable even after eight to 10 hours. It also gets terrific economy out in the bush. The only thing that worries me is the price. It starts at $23,792, not bad value given the equipment, but its a lot more than the $19,990 (negotiable) for run-out models, and the $21,000-odd the old model usually started at.

However Mazda thinks its sharp enough to make this the best-selling car in the country, which it was in 2011 and 2012,

coming in a close second last year. You have the choice of two beautifully

flexible petrol motors, this one and a 138-kilowatt 2.5-litre, and all models are available with six-speed manual or six-speed auto, the auto adding around $2000. Go for the top model with auto and youll finish north of $40k.

But the entry-level Neo will constitute the great bulk of sales and its a good car for the money; certainly the best-looking one in its class, especially in sedan rather

than hatch. And its nicely equipped with cruise, Bluetooth, USB and tricky fuel-saving technology.

However, you only get a space-saver spare (you fret about such things when the nearest guy who plugs tyres is 600 kilometres distant) and the high window line makes the rear seat a bit claustrophobic, especially for kids. Rear visibility isnt great. But if it were just you and me tootling around the city Id have one of these in a flash. \
