“Blessed are…”

What a week and a half this has been! What began as only a dusting of snow and cold temperatures, suddenly turned into a major snow storm. Last Saturday afternoon as we drove over to the Westside Chapel, I was in awe at the beauty that surrounded us. I was also grateful for four-wheel-drive. As we walked around making sure that the buildings were okay, I couldn’t help but wonder at God’s creation. It is Monday morning, February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. The school is closed as well as the office. There are only a few cars on Plum Street. The snow is falling so hard that I can only see a few blocks. As I sit and wonder at the beauty of the falling snow, which we don’t see very often, I marvel at the fact that each snowflake is different from the other. How does God do that? The deeper reflection for me, though, is that each of those snowflakes represent a blessing. How would you name those blessings? Being able to see. Being able to feel a snowflake land on your tongue. To have shelter. To have clean water. To have warm water. To have electricity when some are still without power. To have enough clothes to keep warm. To have family. To have friends. To have an education. To have a job. To have a com-munity of faith. To have a place to pray 24/7. To have food to eat. To be able to hear. To taste, to name only a few.

I invite you to take some time this Sunday with family, with friends, with your small group or in the quiet of simple prayer or adoration before the Blessed Sacrament to name, reflect upon blessings in your life and then give thanks. Offer to God your gratitude and praise. Allow your heart and soul, your voice and your very being to be grati-tude itself.

“Be my protector, O God, a mighty stronghold to save me. For you are my rock, my stronghold! Leave me, guide me, for the sake of your name.” (Psalm 31:3 – 4)Please know how deeply grateful I am for each and every one of you. It is such an honor and a grace to be your pastor. As I mentioned last week, I am truly overwhelmed by God’s goodness. May we as a parish community be ever mind-ful of God’s goodness to us and then share that good news with others, to be missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. In Christ Jesus, through the intercession of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, I love you.

PRAYING IN PIERCE COUNTY JAILOur friends who do Detention Ministry at the prison would be surprised how different our work in the jail is. I carry in a bag with scripture resources, pencils and paper, handouts (without staples), a wooden recorder, and a box of tissues. The first thing I do when our group gathers in the TV room is invite the women to write a prayer, if they wish, on paper I’ve brought. Most of them will do this. Mostly their prayers are for their children, and their families, partners, friends. They ask for prayer for their health and recovery from drugs and alcohol. We read the Sunday scripture readings together, from battered bibles with a wide range of translations. Often the children’s bibles are quite good and easy to understand. We talk about the readings, and their lives. Sometimes they talk a lot. Other times I compare my job to a disk jockey’s—I have to fill a lot of air time! In an hour we’re done and we pray together. I might finish with Amazing Grace on the recorder because they have no music in their jail life and it’s one of three things I can play in front of others. While the Bible can be a common language that (usually) brings us together, emphasizing God’s love and forgiveness, the verse that most consistently moves the women in my group is probably something from a 12-step tradition. The language is dated, but for many it explains their time locked up as a gift from a loving Creator. Often they read it out loud in the group and weep.

– Lee Miller

God’s HotelI checked you in again last night, my child Cuz it hurt me so bad to see you out there running wild. All tired and “sucked up” you appeared to me, But put a mirror in front of you, and you can’t even see. That you number among the walking dead, Sores all over your body, confusion in your head.Jail is not the place you want to be, But it’s my “Hotel” where I can work on thee. You see, you weren’t just arrested, you were rescued from yourself I had to bring you back here, and put your drug use on the shelf.Give you some rest, some food, and some talk, Encourage you and love you, before I let you walk.Don’t be like a mule that’s led around by the bit, just listen to my warnings, and I can help you quit. This could be the last time you have to come to this place Just listen to me, the Creator of all, with tears upon my face!!(Author unknown)

Its teachings speak loudly to those who feel torn between the competing demands of this world and their faith. This study offers “pearls for wise living” by applying the wisdom of James to our current day. For anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian life, James offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances. Join us for the study of the Book of James beginning Tuesday, February 19 at 9:30am. This study is 10 sessions and meets each Tuesday morning. For more information or to register, call Ann Ashe at (360)292-7112 or [email protected]

PRAY FOR THE ELECTThroughout the whole year we accompany men and women who are preparing to become Catholic. Catechumens are preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion while others, already baptized in other Christian communities, are preparing to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Please pray for these men and women that the Holy Spirit will strengthen them and bring to perfection the good work the Lord has begun in them. This week let us pray together, "Lord, guide our cate-chumens and all those preparing for the Sacraments of Christian initiation into the fullness of truth and keep them safe from error, doubt, and unbelief (RCIA 168)."

“Meeting with and forming relationships with those in the small group encourages me to dig deep into scripture and live in a manner that demonstrates this deeper knowledge. The members of my group are really my faith family!”

“I can’t emphasize enough how directly and lovingly everyone in my group cares and prays for me and each member of our group.”

THE 7 GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the LordThese gifts are poured into the Christian soul at Baptism and increased and restored throughout life by the reception of the holy Sacraments and growth in the life of grace.FEAR of GOD: what is it?The "fear of the Lord," as it is usually used in Catholic language, is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which come from St Jerome's Latin version of the Book of Isaiah. In Isaiah 11, the principle spiritual gifts of the coming Messiah are prophesied. The gift of the fear of the Lord perfects our hope of remaining in God's grace and someday being with him in the happiness of heaven. This means that this fear is a fear caused by love. We fear to lose God by sin, since we love him, and we have a reverent fear and awe of him because he is so beautiful and great and powerful. This fear is called "filial" fear, because it like the fear of a child who is afraid to hurt the feelings of his father because of their mutual love. It is different from what is called "servile" fear, which is based on punishment, like the fear of a slave for his master. The fear of the Lord is source of great peace and happiness; it is thus very different from worldly fears of suffering or punishment and rather it helps us endure pain because of our love for the Savior.

“…With My mercy, I pursue sinners along all their paths, and My Heart rejoices when they return to Me. I forget the bitterness with which they fed My Heart and rejoice at their return. Tell sinners that no one shall escape My Hand; if they run away from My Merciful Heart, they will fall into My Just Hands. Tell sinners that I am always waiting for them, that I listen intently to the beating of their heart . . . when will it beat for Me?" – St. Maria Faustina
