All to often, only a few an-swer the call because few are equipped to lead without sup-

Part of the problem is individuals standing in the way of progress. They don’t like change and will stand in the way of it even when it is desperately needed. You know who they are and you may feel powerless to stop them.

You DO have the power with your vote to send a mes-sage. It’s time we stop holding on and start moving on. calendars. This year the Ceremonial will memorial-ize Past Potentate and Past Grand Master James O. Wood, who passed away earlier this year. All Nobles and Ladies of Nile are invited to attend the official initiation of our new Nobles and meet new members of the Nile family. This year we have planned our Ceremonial in conjunction with the annual Greeters Crab Feed. All our newly initiated candidates and their ladies will receive complementary tickets to the Crab Feed. This is an opportunity for all of us to meet and welcome the new Nobles and their ladies. Show your support of Nile by attending the Ceremonial and Greeters Crab Feed.

7. November 2nd is the annual Greeters Crab Feed, which offers all-you-can-eat fresh crab. Tickets often sell out, so get yours early.

8. November 15th – Open Stated Meeting and “Cash for Kids” Night, which is set for Friday, November 15th. This is also a change from your calendars. This year we will have at least 80 turkeys to raffle, so plan to come. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the door. 100% of the profits from this raffle go to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

I hope to see you and your family at as many of these Nile activities as possible. They are all very impor-tant to our Temple’s membership, philanthropy and financial wellbeing. Remember, we are all “United for a Noble Cause.” Advertising in SMILE with NILE

INTERESTED IN A MOTORCYCLE CLUB

AT NILE?We are still trying to form a regular motorcycle rid-ing club here at the Nile. A minimum of 10 Nobles are needed in order to form the club. If one was formed we would have monthly meetings, plan money makers, have monthly rides, organize social events with family members and ride in parades without special maneu-vers. Ladies would not be allowed to ride in the parades with us but could participate in all other activities. Any-one interested in starting this club, please contact Dave Brady at [email protected] or 425-481-0159.

In the near future we will plan to meet at the Nile for all who are interested in this club. We may even plan a ride on a Saturday starting with breakfast at the 19th Hole. One idea is to have our monthly Breakfast or Lunch meetings on Saturdays and after the meeting go on rides or activities. Keep checking the SWN for more information.

Dear Nobles:

In a continuing effort to raise funds for our Nile Shrine Center and at the suggestion of Illustrious Sir Richard Sardeson, your Divan is considering naming several of the Temple rooms for individuals who wish to contribute and become the room’s sponsor.

The rooms that would be named after a sponsor, or a person of his choosing, are: The Gold Room The Caravan Room The Main Ball Room The Red Room. The room would be thereafter known by this name and a plaque would be placed over the door.

The necessary donation amount has not yet been determined. A future communiqué will supply this information.

Sponsoring contributions would be placed in the Building and Grounds Fund.

- Gale Kenney, Oriental Guide

Calliope

by Bob T. Wilson, Captain.

Our next parade is October 5 at Granite Falls. The Calliope will play taped music during the Haunted House. More to follow at our unit meeting October 1. Check the Haunted House schedule on page 6 and please help one of those evenings.

Our Christmas dinner will be Sunday, December 8th, possibly in the Pote’s lounge. We’ll know more later.

Oriental Band

On September 20th, the Nile Oriental Band went on safari and traveled to Yakima to perform in the Yaki-ma Sunfair Parade with the Masada Shriners. It is not an easy trip as the route was difficult due to construc-tion but where can you go and not incur construction? The Potentate and the Assistant Rabban also attended the parade. The night before everyone enjoyed a great cocktail get together in a hospitality suite sponsored jointly by the Potentate and the OB. Afterwards all went to dinner and had a fine meal – just ask musette player Gaylord. The weather was great for the parade and the OB float provide for by Pasha II Gillespie, worked very well. Perhaps it will be used again? Past Sultan Martinez suffered a little because of the heat, his dark costume, the early morning trip and the inside-out cymbals he attempted to play. After the pa-rade several went to Masada Shriners, met old friends and had a nice piece of tender steak. It was truly a great trip. Might even do it again next year?

The OB plans on attending the Granite Falls Parade on October 5, and is considering returning to Nile’s 19th Hole for a late lunch afterwards. Give it some thought.

The Band fully intends to perform at the November 2, Ceremonial and will be in great shape to end the year at their Christmas Party on December 14.

Men’s Golf Club

by Arne Ringstad

This concludes the 2013 golf season for all fair weather players. The rain and snow (Jerry Biddle) players will still be out there on the course.

It was a great year at Nile and for the Golf Course. I have enjoyed being the Golf Club President for 2013 and would like to thank everyone who helped me.

We all have plans for making our little tree house a bit better. Please let someone know if you have some ideas for improvement of the Men’s Golf Club.

I hope to see all of you next year and hope the weather will be as good as 2013. Thanks again for your support.

Ladies’ Golf Club

by Sheri Baker

It is hard to believe our season is almost over but what a fabulous one we’ve had.

The matches were completed for the Club Champion-ship and a big congratulations to Ladies Division 2013 Club Champion Suzanne Young. Sheri Baker was 1st flight runner up. The 2nd flight winner was Elaine Cohn who fought a great battle with runner up Linda Shaw. It was fun to play the “match play” format. Not only did tournaments co-chair Char Summers organize the series of matches over a month long period but then put on an amazing celebration after play. It was great to see so many turn out including our social members. We enjoyed food, cake and champagne in our toast to the new Champion.

Char Summers, Linda Shaw, Sheri Baker and our Pro Joe Korn participated in a Pro-Am at Cedarcrest. It was part of a Western Washington PGA series. The weather was crazy but we had a blast. Joe did quite well and shot a 1 under par 69. Oh, to have his shots!

The slate for the 2014 officers was presented at the September meeting. They are as follows: Captain---Mary Jo Toivola Assistant Captain---Karin Ingleright Secretary---Nan Isakson Treasurer---Suzanne Young. Voting will take place at the October 1st meeting.

Later this month are the Monthly Medal Tournament, the Consolation Tournament and the Cross Country Play, which will be a 9:30 shotgun, followed by the Halloween party. Get your clubs ready.

One more important date: December 3rd is the end of the season Trophy Luncheon. Hope to see you there.!

Virgil let us know that Sylvia is living in an adult fam-ily home in Newcastle and is very happy and comfort-able there. Her general health is good but the dementia is affecting her memory. He visits her daily.

Gale Kenney presented Virgil Mudd and Marv Jackson with 100 Million Dollar club certificates with silver chains and thanked them for their years of service to our club. He also brought greetings from the Potentate and said to check Smile with Nile for the pa-rade schedule and other functions at the Shrine Center and at other Shrine clubs and units.

PUBLICWELCOME

A MESSAGE FROM THE IMPERIAL POTENTATEDear Fellow Nobles,

On behalf of all the nobles of Murat Shriners, I want to tell you what a tremendous pleasure and honor it was to welcome so many nobles, ladies and friends to the 2013 Imperial Session of Shriners International. We hope you enjoyed your time in Indianapolis, and left with many special memories.

Thank you again for the honor, privilege and opportu-nity to serve as your Imperial Potentate. The position comes with tremendous responsibility; however, work-ing together, we will accomplish great things.

As we are all aware, the strength of both our fraternity and our beloved philanthropy is directly related to membership. This Imperial year, our efforts will focus on increasing membership numbers, and increasing awareness of the Shriners fraternity, and its members, especially at the local level. We hope that our fellow Shriners will notice a new energy and commitment to membership, and to the fraternity as a whole, and will become active participants in our endeavors.

Your Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees will be putting a strong emphasis on growing and stabilizing our fraternity. We are pleased to announce a new membership development program: The Pace Program: Setting the Pace for a Strong Future. Over the course of two years, this pilot program will focus on providing customized temple membership strategies for specific groups within the temple.

This program will begin with an Imperial Officer and a representative from the Imperial Membership Com-mittee conducting an extensive meeting/brainstorm-ing session at the temple. The visiting team, together with the temple leadership, will develop membership strategies using the input from the temple Divan, Past Potentates, membership/public relations teams, unit/club officers, new members and ladies.

During the meeting, information on some of the best practices being used successfully at temples that have had continuous success will be shared and discussed.

This program is available to any temple whose leader-ship has a real and strong commitment, desire and willingness to secure the future of their temple. For the program to be successful, all the participants at the both the temple and national levels need to be commit-ted to working together – and working hard – through-out the course of the program.

Don’t miss this tremendous opportunity to strengthen and improve membership at your temple. All temples are invited to contact the office of membership devel-opment at [email protected] or 813-281-8101 to learn more and to discuss participating in The Pace Program.

We are also pleased to announce the creation of the Red Skelton Shriners Community Awareness Award, which will recognize and honor those temples that demonstrate a strong, successful commitment to raising local awareness of the fraternity and to community involvement. Inspired by the Masonic Service As-sociation of North America’s (MSANA) Mark Twain Award, the Red Skelton Community Awareness Award will promote effective communication among temples, Shrine clubs and members as well as positive and creative community awareness initiatives and activities. Special thanks to Jim McCormick of Hadi Shriners for assisting in obtaining approval for the use of Red Skel-ton’s name from Mrs. Skelton, who was very gracious.

The first awards will be presented at the upcoming 2014 Imperial Session in Minneapolis. Information and details regarding criteria, submissions, deadlines and registration will be available on Shriners Vil-lage beginning Sept. 1. For more information, please contact the public relations department at [email protected].

We ask that each of you re-commit yourselves to actively working to increase membership, and to ensur-ing that this great fraternity continues its long history of fun, fellowship and service to others.

Lady Margaret and I thank you again for the oppor-tunity to lead and serve you this Imperial Year, and we look forward to meeting and working with you. As we travel we will meet many of you for the first time – we look forward to those opportunities to make new friends and hear new ideas.

Yours in the faith, John A. Cinotto, Imperial Potentate

MASONIC OUTREACH SERVICESby Mary Craves-Hollands, Director

I was getting ready to submit my article to the various publications throughout the state when something stopped me from transmitting that article. After the events of the last few days, I have decided to re-write my article in an effort to explain to all reading what it is Masonic Outreach Services does for the aging members of the Fraternity.

In the past few weeks, I have worked with two Broth-ers who were not aware of the services we provide and were struggling, with great frustration, to handle some very emotional and complicated situations on their own. Both of these Brothers were assisting another Brother who is/was dying from cancer. Neither knew about the services Medicare and the state of Washing-ton could offer the ailing Brother nor what Masonic Outreach Services could do to help.

I am going to use these situations as examples of what Masonic Outreach Services (MOS) can provide. Let’s take the case of the first Brother. He was trying very hard to meet the wishes of the dying Brother which were to attend one more Lodge meeting and to pass away at home. Well, the Lodge meeting was taken care of seamlessly. The other request was trying to be met just by Brothers in the Lodge who might have a little time to be with the dying Brother at home. Hospice was called in but they are only with a dying person for a few hours a week. However, they want someone to be with the person on Hospice 24/7, so a valiant attempt was made to schedule members of this Brother’s lodge to be with the dying Brother.

Had I known about this situation a little sooner, we would have explored the Medicaid/COPES program to see if he might have qualified for a program I have written about before called COPES. The COPES program will pay for someone to come into a person’s home to provide care for several hours a day. The program can even reimburse a caregiver who has to be there 24/7. It is not a lot of money, but it would have reimbursed someone to be there more than the Lodge brothers were able to be there. Then the Lodge Broth-ers and Outreach Services could pick up the extra uncovered hours. Of course this would mean dealing with the state, but we here at Masonic Outreach Ser-vices are experts at doing just that.

The second Brother was trying to carry the burden of his dying friend and Brother all by himself. He was very angry and frustrated because there was no one to help coordinate services. His dying Brother is in a facility that he is not happy with, so he feels he needs to be with this Brother all of the time. In this situa-tion, we would explore the dying Brother’s income and assets to see if he would be eligible for Medicaid/COPES/VA. The next step would be to try to find a facility that was better equipped to give this dying Brother the care he deserves. Perhaps an Adult Family Home where there are no more than six residents. He certainly would get more attention and would have his needs met more quickly. We have lists of Adult Family Homes (Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Homes as well) and will even go out and make a visit to inves-tigate whether the home is suitable or not.

Probably the most important service we provide is creating a plan then assisting in executing and keeping that plan in place. We know how to navigate the “sys-tem” and get things accomplished. When one person with knowledge and connections heads up a group of folks trying to do the right thing, miracles can hap-pen. We see them happen all of the time.

I hope telling you about these Brothers has helped you to understand better what we do. For more informa-tion or to refer someone for our services, please call Mary Craves-Hollands at 206-878-8434/1-800-4630 Ext.101 or [email protected]. We are here for all aging members of the Fraternity, their wives and widows. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hospital Pilots Google Glass Sonia Bouchard, Director of Clinical Support Servic-es, reported that the hospital’s Rehabilitation depart-ment is excited to be a part of cutting edge technology when it was accepted as one of the first 8,000 “testers” for the pilot phase version of Google Glass. Although not available to the public yet, Google Glass is a sim-ple, wearable device that allows the user to access their smart phone, email, GPS, internet, take pictures or video and other features yet to be designed. The mem-bers of the department’s assistive technology team are in communication with developers to create software applications specifically for children and teens with special needs, similar to those patients treated at the hospital. The hospital received one pair of the glasses, along with a very comprehensive training program for 2 staff members on this device. As part of the piloting of this new technology, the hospital is now positioned to have a very unique opportunity to give input and shape how Google Glass will be used for the patients we treat.
