How is the software market changing?

What Organizations want: •  Align revenue and expenses •  Purchase according to consumption needs •  Informed deployment decisions:

•  Agility to adapt to dynamic market •  Simple to implement, reduced time to value •  Scale up or down with ease

What Organizations have: •  Hardware focus – expensive one time purchase

locked to the device •  Customer bears the financial risk •  IT driven •  Infrastructure that is slow to change

•  Licenses that have pre-requisites on other licenses are explicitly not allowed

•  Cisco, by principle, does not shut down a customer's network or software for licensing violations

•  No Artificial Currencies

•  Enforcement and Sales Models must match

•  The total number of licenses, per product, that a customer can choose from must be less than 10

•  All products that are released after November 2014 should go out with only Smart Licensing

Licensing Standards Included as part of Cisco Development Best Practices

In Conjunction with Smart Licensing, a simplification exercise is underway across Cisco Product Teams to create ‘easier to understand’ l icense bundling models.

Options Visual

1

Direct Cloud Access Cisco Product sends usage information directly over the internet. No additional Components needed

2 Direct Cloud Access through an Off the Shelf HTTPs Proxy Cisco Products send usage information over the internet via a Proxy Server. Any off-the-shelf Proxy will work.

3 Mediated Access through a Smart Call Home Transport Gateway Cisco Products send usage information to a local Mediator such as the Smart Call Home Transport Gateway (Free VM Download), which automatically completes the transaction with the backend.

4 Mediated Access through a On-Prem Collector – Disconnected Cisco Products send usage information to a local disconnected collector, which acts as a local license authority. Once a month, an exchange of human readable information will be performed to keep the databases in sync.

Smart Software Licensing Transformation Smart Software Licensing is not just a new licensing tool. It transforms how you think about license management.

Automatic

Add users and licenses As needed. Billed accordingly.

Licenses self-register. Device is ready to use.

Manually register each device. Unlock with license key.

Licenses specific to one device. Non-transferrable between devices.

Licenses moved between devices and users as needed.

You cannot use more than you paid for initially.

Only one business model. Flexible business models that translate to consumption needs.

And Now for Your Questions….

Cisco will provide reporting capabilities for these products but no licensing enforcement is expected.

How does the current licensing approach work with new products when they are enabled with the new licensing model?

When will we see improvements in the licensing experience? Will there be an impact to pricing?

The new model is an customer option. If you choose not to use it then current licensing will continue to work the same way it does today.

Some of our software isn’t licensed. In the future will Cisco add licenses to those products?

Customers should begin to see major improvements by the end of 2014. Pricing is not expected to change due to licensing changes.

Do I have to buy the new product to obtain licensing relief or is there a migration plan?

A migration plan is being developed for products with a long life. Products nearing end of life (2-3 years) will not be part of the migration plan.
