Smart Energy City A GreenTech Business Network Event

Western Power Distribution

•7.7 Million customers over a 55,500 sq kms service area

•Our network consists of 221,000 kms of overhead lines and

underground cables, and 185,000 substations

•LV to 132kV Network ownership

Network challenges presented by transition to a

low carbon future

• WPD will need to be able to accommodate

significant volumes of:

– Local generation (e.g. solar PV, wind, CHP

& EfW)

– Low carbon demand (e.g. Electric Vehicles

(EVs) & heat pumps)

• Networks are not currently designed to

accommodated these loads on high

volumes/clusters

• Considerable uncertainty about uptake –

volume, location & network impact

Funding allocated between all DNOs Smaller projects Minimal review by Ofgem; self audited by DNOs against detailed guidance – reviewed for duplication

Tier 1

DNOs compete for funding Small number of “flag ship” projects Significant Ofgem oversight Bids subjected to scrutiny by Ofgem and external parties Regular implementation reviews
