Arrive Auckland, transfer to Waiheke

Haere Mai & Welcome to New Zealand!

On arrival into Auckland’s International airport you’ll be met by a representative of Exclusively New Zealand for a VIP meet and greet service, escorting you through customs, immigration and bio-security and transferring you directly to the helipad.

Fly by helicopter from the airport direct to Delamore Lodge on Waiheke Island. (Luggage to follow by heli.)

You will be greeted at the lodge and can enjoy the afternoon admiring the views overlooking the stunning bays of the Island.

Waiheke Island Waiheke Island is a picturesque blend of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves. There is a great range of activities on Waiheke. Options include sightseeing, mountain biking, sea kayaking, a relaxed vineyard tour and much more. The delectable cuisine on offer is complemented by a range of award-winning wines produced at the island's many wineries. Significant industries on the island include wine-making, olive production, tourism and arts, crafts. Waiheke Island is in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand 17.7 km (about 35 minutes by ferry) from Auckland. Of the Hauraki Gulf islands, it is the second-largest (after Great Barrier Island), the most populated and the most accessible by regular ferry and air services. Waiheke is the third most populated island in New Zealand, after the North and South Islands.

Waiheke has an abundance of award-winning wineries and olive groves that have become an essential stop-over for visitors to the island. With hot, dry summers and stony soils, Waiheke is home to boutique wineries that produce unique, high quality wines based on cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and the recent move into chardonnay grape varieties.

Day 2 Waiheke Island

Today’s Outline

10am Meet you expert wine guide in the lobby of Delamore Lodge and depart to explore the island and experience some of the many vineyards.

Enjoy a 2 course lunch at either Mudbrick or Cable Bay Vineyard.

Return to the lodge this afternoon to refresh before dinner. A visit to the off-shore island of Waiheke The island is famous for its beaches, microclimate vineyards, artists and olive groves. In between there are stretches of glorious native bush with walking tracks and farmland. There is plenty to see and do including sightseeing, sun bathing, wine tasting, mountain biking, sea kayaking, olive oil tasting, checking out the island's artists in their galleries scattered around the island and enjoying the many and varied eateries on offer Olive groves are also quite mature on the island and the olive oil receives good reviews and has recently won some overseas awards. Oneroa is the main village on the island and is a moderate walk from the ferry (uphill) and an easier walk back again. It has the most restaurants and cafes on the island; unfortunately it also has the most real estate agents which almost crowd the main street. Artworks in Oneroa features a library, visitor information centre, art gallery, theatre, cinema, cafe, retail stores, music museum and a community radio station. Below Oneroa Village is Oneroa Beach, a long stretch of beach which is popular with boaties.

Waiheke Island Gourmet Food and Wine Tour Including a 2-course winery lunch and tastings. A natural complement to the fine wines you will taste on Waiheke is a range of hand-made specialty foods and locally-grown produce. A visit to a local olive oil mill is followed by two boutique vineyards, each offering a range of gourmet tastes to accompany their wines, such as succulent oysters straight from Te Matuku Bay, wild honey, the famous local green herb spread. On Saturdays, your tour may also include a visit to the Waiheke Market. The tour includes a two-hour lunch stop at a beachside café or, for a more memorable gourmet experience, lunch at one of our top vineyard restaurants.

Day 3 Waiheke to Rotorua

Today’s Outline

Transfer back to Auckland city via Helicopter to Mechanics Bay (12 minutes flying time), where you will be met by your luxury mini-coach and driver for the journey south to Rotorua (3 hours / 233 kms).

Enjoy highlight stops along the way for sightseeing and enjoy a typical “kiwi BBQ lunch” at a local residence in Te Puke, just south of the coastal city of Tauranga. Local farmers and horse fanatics will join you for lunch.

Continue onto your accommodation at Solitaire Lodge where you can unwind for the evening and enjoy dinner.

Rotorua With its unique volcanic landscape, living Maori culture, natural hot springs and plenty of options for adventure, Rotorua is one of New Zealand's most famous destinations.

When explaining the appeal of their region, the people of Rotorua like to talk of five spirits. You can feel the spirit of the earth, as it rumbles beneath your feet and escapes, hissing, through fumaroles and geysers. You can witness the spirit of Maori culture, with authentic village and performance experiences. With a soak in a natural hot spring or a relaxing massage, you can rejuvenate your spirit. Or free your spirit with outdoor adventures - trout fishing, kayaking, waterskiing, swimming, hiking and mountain-biking. And if it's excitement you crave, you can challenge your spirit with adrenalin-charged extreme activities such as sky-diving, jet boating and zorbing. Apart from its surprising crater, mountain and lake landscape, Rotorua is memorable for striking Tudor-style architecture and beautiful public parks. The farmland around city is some of the most fertile in New Zealand. Watching a sheep show or staying on a working farm is a great way to get a different view of the region.

Solitaire Lodge is a paradise of tranquillity and relaxation amidst a wonderland of bush and lakes. It has been described as “the most beautiful lakeside position anywhere in the world”. Perched in solitary splendour on the tip of a bush-clad peninsular overlooking magnificent Lake Tarawera, Solitaire is the perfect place to base yourself for trout fishing, or to relax and do absolutely nothing.

Day 4 White Island

Today’s Outline

After breakfast, meet the waiting helicopters for your flight-seeing tour to White Island – enjoy stunning “out of this world” landscapes!

A picnic lunch has been prepared for you to take on the flight.

After visiting the island the helis will detour to Rotorua city, where a local driver/guide will be waiting for those who wish to explore a little of Rotorua city. See some of the natural geothermal attractions. Guests on this trip will return to the lodge by road in the late afternoon.

Those who return to the lodge by heli have the afternoon free to either enjoy relaxing at the lodge or perhaps take some heli-fishing (at an additional personal cost).

Dinner at Solitaire Lodge. Heli-scenic experience to White Island (optional – extra costs apply) Fly to Whakaari (White Island) and land for a guided walk around this volcanically active island, once home to factory workers who mined for Sulphur. Ruined remains of this hard life still exist today. One of the most fascinating and accessible volcanoes on earth, White Island carries with it an A grade level of scientific importance and as New Zealand’s only live marine volcano, scientists and volcanologists worldwide are attracted to its unique features. The volcano is estimated to be between 100,000 and 200,000 years old. However, the small portion of the island that is visible above sea level has been in its present form for an estimated 16,000 years - evidence of a continually changing landscape. Walking on White Island is like walking on the moon. Virtually no vegetation survives the harsh acidic environment inside the crater walls. Instead, lush beds of yellow and white sulphur crystals grow amongst hissing, steaming, bubbling fumaroles.

Day 5 Leisure day at Solitaire Lodge

Today’s Outline

Today is a leisure day, John Hamill – local fishing guide – will be available to take clients fishing, or you can fish off the lodge’s jetty, take bush walk

Fly fishing and/or heli-fishing can be arranged for today at an extra cost.

Dinner at Solitaire Lodge. Fishing with John Hamil – on the boat ‘Elusive’ John Hamil (local fishing guide), to be at Solitaire Lodge for those who would like to go out on the lake. Includes 3 hours guided fishing and light refreshments. **important note – this boat takes up to six passengers only** If the whole group would like to go fishing we can arrange for a larger boat to be available at an extra cost. But the other half of the group may like to heli-fish on this day – at an extra cost per individual. Lake Tarawera Experience the beauty of this most magnificent of lakes. The majestic backdrop of the dormant Tarawera volcano, naturally heated thermal waters and unspoiled flora and fauna provide a beautiful playground to experience a delightful cruise on this beautiful lake. As well as simply relaxing and enjoying the serenity of this natural playground, you may wish to engage in the following activities:

Te Rata Bay Join your hosts and depart Hot water Beach (Te Rata Bay) is located in a secluded bay and only accessible by boat. Thermal springs gently rise through the lake bed, warming the water and creating a mystical steam around the cliffs. Here you can enjoy a relaxing swim or a lovely intimate soak in a natural thermal rock pool. Tarawera Falls The spectacular Tarawera Falls — where water surges out of fissures in a large rock cliff-face surrounded by native bush – is located on the south eastern side of Tarawera. The cliff is the end of an ancient rhyolitic lava flow that is believed to have poured from an erupting Mt Tarawera about 11,000 years ago. An abrupt stop to the flow produced these high cliffs. The quickest access to the Falls is by boat across the lake, and your hosts can provide return transfers for this experience. Be sure to take a picnic, your bathing suit and a towel as there are secluded pools along the track that are just perfect for a dip after a hike on a hot day! Fishing Lake Tarawera is renowned for its trophy sized Rainbow Trout of up to 7 kg. You will love the excitement of catching these huge fish yourself and with local fishing guru John Hamill you can enjoy it in the best possible way. Catch & Cook Once landed, your own trout can be enjoyed Sashimi style (similar to Sushi) accompanied by Wasabi and soy sauce, or barbequed with Clearwater’s delicious but secret recipe. For special occasions, your very own fish can be baked in the thermal sands at Hot Water Beach while you soak in the natural hot pool. But of course, your fish doesn’t have to be eaten. If it makes you feel better, you can release your trout back into the wild after taking a photo as proof of your expertise.

Kayaking Follow the path from the lodge to the boat house and lake edge, where you’ll find kayaks available for guest use. Paddle in the lagoon and explore the shoreline and sheltered bays. Fishing from Solitaire Guests can wander down to the lake front from Solitaire Lodge and throw a line in before supper. And if they have a little more time, they could take out one of the Lodge’s self drive dinghies which would get them a little further into the lake... more luck with the fishing!

Hawke's Bay Hawke's Bay Wine Country is a holiday destination where the sun seems to forever shine. Famed for being one of the three major winemaking regions in New Zealand, Hawke's Bay is home to internationally acclaimed wines and is the premier New Zealand destination for food, wine and lifestyle. Supported by a Mediterranean climate and a varied landscape from dramatic sea cliffs, to fertile plains and crystal clear rivers that meander down to the Pacific Ocean, the region has a diverse range of things to see and do and hosts a number of icon events throughout the year For families enjoying the sun, there are golden sand beaches, water theme parks, public swimming pools and crystal clear rivers. Swim with dolphins, visit the National Aquarium of New Zealand or see the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. For the thrill seeker there's plenty to fuel your adrenaline from jet-boating, hot air ballooning, surfing, caving and paragliding to sailing and windsurfing. Day walks, hunting or fishing and golf are popular past times too. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, located on the North Island in Hawke’s Bay - one of New Zealand’s most significant wine districts, opened in November 2007 and is living up to all expectations in delivering a true five star experience. The Cape Kidnappers estate is set on a 5,000-acre sheep and cattle farm which rolls along cliffs that plunge dramatically to the sea and includes the internationally acclaimed and challenging par-72 golf course. On the exterior, the lodge resembles a cluster of farm buildings, designed to blend with the rustic feel of the area. Spacious cottages, each with a breathtaking view, high ceilings, fireplaces and large luxury bathrooms, will fan out from the main building. Graceful French doors lead to large outdoor porches looking out at a stunning 180 degree Pacific panorama.

Day 7 The Hawkes Bay and The Farm at Cape Kidnappers

Today’s Outline

This morning you will be meet at the lodge by a local expert guide who will show you the hidden gems of the Hawkes Bay.

First stop will be stunning Te Mata Peak – take in the views of the region – breathtaking!

Then to a special part of the deserted coastline where you can experience a traditional Maori welcome. A picnic lunch follows – a chance for the group to enjoy the scenery and to spend time chatting with the local maori. Gain an insight into the history and stories.

After lunch it’s time for some wine tasting at some of the well renowned local vineyards before returning to the lodge mid-afternoon.

If there is time this afternoon here are some recommended activities to do at The Farm (extra costs apply to some): Hiking trails Available straight from the lodge – just ask the friendly staff to point you in the right direction. Golf Enjoy this stunning setting while playing our golf course designed by the legendary golf architect Tom Doak, the par 71 golf course measures 7,119 yards (6,510 meters) and will challenge golfers of all skill levels. Completed in 2004, Cape Kidnappers has been hailed as one of the great modern marvels in golf and is currently ranked the 41st best golf course in the world by Golf Magazine. 4WD Tours Our local farmer and a 4-wheel-drive specialist can guide guests on adventure tours and provide individual 4-wheel-drive instruction. Our specialists can accompany guests to unique locations, ranging from private beaches to the top of the 3rd Hill - a spectacular place to see the sunrise. Gannet Colony Cape Kidnappers is the home of the largest, most accessible mainland colony of gannets in the world. The 20,000 gannets at the Cape are members of the Booby family, with distinctive black eye markings and a pale gold crown. Gannets are sized midway between a sea gull and an albatross. Visitors to the colony will see adults and young nesting in rows carrying out their daily routine. The birds can be seen from September until early May when they leave New Zealand for Australia. In September they return and build their nests to ready for the hatching of chicks during December and January. Kiwi Discovery Walk – bookings essential As a guest of The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, we are delighted to offer an exclusive experience to view our treasured native bird – the kiwi. Because the kiwi is a semi-nocturnal secretive bird, few New Zealanders have seen their national bird in the wild. The kiwi is the sole survivor of an ancient order of birds including the now extinct Moa. There are five recognised species - all of which are endangered. It is a flightless bird, about the size of a domestic fowl and has coarse, bristly, hair-like feathers. Tours are arranged with experienced guides from Environmental Services who carry out essential monitoring of the kiwi. Guests are transferred from the lodge and taken to a particular site. They then walk for up to 30 minutes to locate the kiwi habitat. Guests can observe the guide checking the kiwi transmitters and watch them being weighed and measured. Photographs are permitted. Kiwi do not like to be disturbed excessively and therefore we can only offer the Kiwi Discovery Walk on certain days.

Day 8 Napier to Abel Tasman Track - Day One

The most noticeable features of this park are the golden sandy beaches, the fascinating rocky outcrops (mainly granite but with a scattering of limestone and marble) and the rich, unmodified estuaries. The landscape has been modified, perhaps more than in our other national parks. The vegetation cover varies and reflects a history of fires and land clearance, but the forests are regenerating well especially in damp gullies where a rich variety of plants can be found. Black beech dominates the drier ridges. The more common forest birds, like fantails, tui and bellbirds, can be seen along with pukeko around the estuaries and wetlands. The park's boundary excludes the estuaries and seabed but in 1993 the Tonga Island Marine Reserve was created along one part of the Abel Tasman coast. Like a national park, all life in the reserve is protected. (Night One) Meadowbank Homestead was originally built in the 19th century. It was the envy of the European settlers, built on the "finest site in Awaroa Bay" to capture the stunning panoramic views and all-year-round sun on the edge of the inlet. The Wilson family brought to life a remarkable family heritage when they rebuilt Meadowbank Homestead as a lodge. After a day on the trail or on the beach, come home to a traditional Kiwi welcome of pre-dinner drinks and snacks while your hosts prepare dinner. Share a fascinating living history as the triumphs and tragedies of the original European settlement of the region unfolds through the personal stories of the Wilson family's ancestors. After a hot shower in your ensuite room, be lulled to sleep by the tides and then awake to birdsong and breakfast overlooking the gardens by the sea.

If conditions allow, visit the seal colony at Tonga Island. Watch out for new-born pups in December and January.

Cruising past Tonga Quarry and the Tonga Arches, your guide will explain the history of this granite area, pointing out some of the features and quarry relics.

Leave kayaks at Onetahuti and walk over Tonga Saddle to Awaroa.

You are welcomed at Meadowbank Homestead – Awaroa, a faithful re-creation of the Wilson family’s original home on the finest site in the bay.

(Night Two) Sitting just above the tide line on the edge of a golden beach, Torrent Bay Lodge has been the Wilson family holiday home for over 30 years. Their home has been continually extended and remodelled to be shared exclusively with visitors who stay with the Wilsons on one of their overnight trips into Abel Tasman National Park. Far away from the hustle and bustle of town, nestled in one of the Abel Tasman’s most famous bays, Torrent Bay Lodge retains all the charm of the Wilson family's relaxing holiday home. The lodge is renowned for its hospitality and is a place you can choose to be as active or relaxed as you wish. After your day exploring the park, whether by kayak or by foot, our warm welcome includes hot and cold drinks with delicious snacks – a reward for your efforts! Then why not laze on the sun deck or feel the sand between your toes on the beach in front of the lodge, or in winter cosy up by our open fire. Whatever you choose, you’ll return to your home-away-from-home to savour a freshly prepared meal, local wine or beer and good company. After dinner, stay up late gazing at the stars from the deck or retire to your comfortable bed and let the waves soothe you to sleep at the end of a wonderful day. Sleep in or watch the sun rise as you soak up the beauty and tranquillity of the park to yourself, long before the day visitors arrive, before tucking into a home-cooked kiwi breakfast with delicious selection of wholesome cereal, toast and freshly brewed coffee.

Walk through the northern forests of the park with magnificent specimens of Nikau Palm and Rata.

At Totaranui, join our fast, safe, comfortable Vista Cruise to see a different view of the coastline you have just explored by kayaking and walking. Hot drinks, open or enclosed viewing decks and bathroom facilities are available on board.

Enjoy a beach stop at the golden expanse of Anchorage Beach. Relax on the beach or walk the spectacular Pitt Head Loop, and then rejoin the Cruise to Kaiteriteri.

The final boat ride ends at Motueka where your helicopter transport will be waiting.

Transfer by helicopter to Grasmere Lodge, where you will have 3 delicious nights to wind-down (or keep pace!) and where your main luggage will be waiting.

Grasmere Lodge — High Country Retreat — where luxury and natural splendour come together in the heart of the Southern Alps, to form what one international guest described as “a whole other world of peacefulness & serenity.” Built in 1858, the original limestone homestead, now the core of the lodge, introduces you to the style of personal pampering that earned the Harper’s Hideaway Report Grand Award in 1998. At the same time this traditional New Zealand high country station (ranch), set amid towering 7000 ft peaks, provides a wide range of outdoor activities for those seeking a more adventurous interlude. Grasmere Lodge also offers a richness of traditional New Zealand hospitality. Owner, Tom Butler, and his staff epitomise New Zealand friendliness and generosity of spirit. Together they take great delight in sharing the magic of Grasmere with their guests.

Today’s Outline

Meet your specialist horse riding guide this morning for a trek around the station.

A picnic lunch is included today

Return to the lodge mid-afternoon

Dinner will be served at Grasmere.

“Riding at Grasmere Lodge is a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and quietness of the high country, following in the hoofprints of the shepherds who have preceded us”.

Grasmere Station is home to some of the very best horse trekking in the country. Heather, your guide follows the Pat Parelli method of Natural Horsemanship, aiming to encourage the horse to obey because it wants to, not through fear or pain. She’s fascinating to talk to about the philosophies behind her horse-handling. The horses are steady without being broken-down dude ranch nags, and they are very much individual personalities. You'll be introduced to your horse by name and told its habits and characteristics. They are known in New Zealand as farm hacks -- specially bred for surefootedness and endurance. These are the type of horses used by high country shepherds for mustering in sheep from steep mountainsides and wide open tussocklands. Likewise, the saddles are a cross between English and Western, developed with a small pommel, knee-holds and a deep seat, to keep the rider comfortably in the saddle going up and down hills or river banks

Day 13 Grasmere Lodge to Queenstown

Today’s Outline

This morning transfer by private vehicle to Christchurch airport (1 hour / 45 minutes, 137 kms) for your flight to Queenstown.

On arrival in Queenstown meet your awaiting Harley Davidson Motorcycles!! You have the choice to be driven (double behind the driver or to self drive your Harley to Blanket Bay Lodge

Your luggage will be transferred by road.

Relax and the lodge this evening. Queenstown, as well as the gateway to the Fiordland National Park, is a sophisticated resort town, nestled in picture postcard fashion on the shores of the expansive snow-fed, glacial Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains. Queenstown is surrounded by national parks, glaciers, fiords, backcountry fly fishing rivers, Lord of the Rings film scenes, deserted gold mining settlements and a host of exciting tour options. You can take a scenic helicopter ride, go white water rafting or jet boating, test your skills at one of the region’s World Class golf courses or pamper yourself in one of the town’s many health spas, you can hunt, fish, mountain-bike, paraglide and in the winter months ski, snowboard or heli-ski. The Remarkables soar above you in the crisp air, their snowclad peaks, rosy in the dawn, beckon you upwards, tempting you to explore the majestic mountain tops. For something a little more relaxing perhaps a languid wander around town and relaxing in the warmth of a fine restaurant. Luxury lodges and five star resorts head a vast range of accommodation options for international visitors. Many popular tramps begin at Glenorchy, at the head of the Lake Wakatipu, a 44km drive through breathtaking scenery. The Rees-Dart, Greenstone and Caples valleys, with their dramatic mountain backdrops, take several days to explore, and the Routeburn track is so famous that visitors walking it now have to book well in advance.

. . History The first humans to see the waters of Lake Wakatipu didn't have it quite as easy as we do today. The early Maori struggled through the tangle of thorned matagouri and needle-sharp speargrass which guarded the approach to the lake, in search of food, flax and especially greenstone. The coldness of winter so far south prevented them from setting up permanent settlements. It wasn't until the end of the 1850's that Europeans lived in the area. The first settlers, William Rees and Paul Tunzelmann von Alderflug, divided the lake between them and settled in for a peaceful life of farming; but not for long. Their idyll was shattered -- by gold. Thousands scrambled to New Zealand's richest gold rush. The remains of that heady time can still be marveled at in Arrowtown, near Queenstown, where the primitive conditions of a mining shantytown have been preserved. Queenstown itself, so named because it was "fit for a Queen", is nestled into the edge of Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand's third largest lake. The lake's steep slopes are dark with native forest, and the snowy tops of the Remarkables reflect in its tranquil surface.

Picture yourself in a sheltered glacial valley at an elevation of 3000ft, located above the shores of Lake Wanaka on one of New Zealand’s iconic high country stations. The Estuary Burn valley, classic Lord of the Rings territory, is surrounded by stunning mountain peaks, tussock grass, and hillsides covered in native bush where wild Deer and Chamois clambering on the slopes. Every now and then a cheeky Kea bird appears from nowhere to say ‘hello’; the only other sound is the water in a nearby stream making its way downhill to the lake below. On-site facilities include the Mountain Kitchen where guests gather by open fires for meals. With its well stocked library, dining room, study area and open kitchen, this is the perfect location to relax at the end the day, tell stories, listen to your guides reminiscing of life in the high country and of course enjoy the sumptuous meals prepared by the camp chef.
