    AbstrAct

    The frst decade o the new millennium saw renewed interest in popular

    culture eaturing zombies. This essay shows that a comparative analysis

    o nightmares can be a productive method or analyzing salient themes

    in the imaginative products and practices o cultures in close contact. It

    is argued that zombies, as the frst modern monster, are embedded in a

    set o deeply symbolic structures that are a matter o religious thought.

    The author draws rom her ethnographic work in Haiti to argue that the

    zonbi is at once part o the mystical arts that developed there since the

    colonial period, and comprises a orm o mythmaking that represents, re-

    sponds to, and mystifes the ear o slavery, collusion with it, and rebellionagainst it. In turn, some elements o the Haitian zonbi fgure can be ound

    in patterns that haunt recent American zombie flms. Zombies in these

    flms are read as fgures in a parable about whiteness and death-dealing

    consumption. This essay suggests that the messianic mood surrounding

    the presidential candidacy o Barack Obama was consistent with a pat-

    tern in zombie flms since the 1960s where many zombie-killing heroes

    are fgured as black American males. Zombies are used in both ethno-

    graphic and flm contexts to think through the conditions o embodiment,the boundaries between lie and death, repression and reedom, and the
