Some people see Grammar Schools as stuffy and remote nothing could be further from the truth. At Skinners’ we are at the cutting edge of educational development and we are at the heart of our community. This is evident in our work with the Academy, our partnerships with local schools, our help given to schools looking for ways to improve what they do through the DCSF programme, our leadership in the Grammar School Heads Association and in a thousand other ways, some of which are reported in this newsletter. In so many different ways, we are reaching out to others to help them fulfil their potential. And in doing so, we fulfil our own. S J Everson Headmaster

CCF NEWSLog Run success at CCF Open Day

Thirty members of the contingent along with similar numbers from Judd and Sevenoaks joined cadets from Tonbridge School who hosted a CCF Open Day on Wednesday 10 March

The purpose of the day was to celebrate and publicise to parents and other interested parties the work of the CCF as part of Cadet 150 Year which marks the founding of the first Officer Training Corps in eight Public Schools including Tonbridge in 1860 Over time these increased and evolved to create the 261 contingents which currently exist - only 61 in Maintained Schools (Skinnersrsquo was founded in 1901)

A dry but bitterly cold afternoon began in spectacular fashion with a fly-past by an Apache helicopter to accompany the formal inspection by Major General Mike Tennant of an Honour Guard found by 30 members of Tonbridge School CCF The Guard then gave an impressive display of rifle and foot drill accompanied by the band of the Parachute Regiment With this complete cadets moved to various displays and demonstrations set up in and around the magnificent facilities of Tonbridge School Included in these were sub-aqua demonstrations fieldcraft (including a blank-firing exercise) campcraft miniature range signals (put on by Skinnersrsquo) a field gun display (put on by teams from Sevenoaks) together with a Javelin simulator a climbing wall and other static and hands-on displays provided by Regulars from all three Services a major attraction being the Apache helicopter Among the many visitors we were particularly pleased to welcome the Mayor of Royal Tunbridge Wells Cllr Leonard Price and the Mayoress who toured several of the stands during their stay

The eagerly awaited log run came towards the end of the afternoon with the four schools providing two teams of 5 to convey a 10ft spar round the perimeter of the cricket field Skinnersrsquo and Tonbridge were level pegging at the change-over followed by a shoulder to shoulder battle into the home straight The better teamwork and fitness of the Skinnersrsquo team prevailed to give CSM Will Dedman and his teams a hard-fought but well deserved victory

The final act of the afternoon was provided by the band of the Parachute Regiment who marched from Tonbridge Castle through the High Street finishing in the Quad at Tonbridge where they performed a traditional Beating Retreat featuring marching and counter-marching as well as individual solos

The day itself concluded with a first-class charity dinner at Tonbridge School where 185 diners were entertained by a brass quintet from the PWRR Kohima Band as well as by excellent speeches from Mike Tennant and Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup It was a fitting way to end a memorable day Our thanks for the tremendous feat of organisation are due principally to Cdr Ian Lucas (OC Tonbridge School CCF) along with Adjutant Captain Martin Brennan and the PMC Captain Andrew Penfold

Ready for the off

CSM Will Dedman gives his final instructions

On Saturday 13th February the customary Junior amp Middle School ski trip departed from Skinnersrsquo heading for Serre Chevalier France After a brief lap of Tunbridge Wells to retrieve Mr Hubbardrsquos passport from the kitchen table we caught our short flight to Grenoble and boarded the coach to our resort The journey was comfortable but an incident in the mountains meant that our arrival at the hotel was delayed by nearly 2 hours When we arrived the hotel staff went out of their way to make the group comfortable and after the boys were fitted with their skiing equipment everyone went for a well-earned sleep The hotel was basic but warm and comfortable It may have only been a 2 hotel but the staff did all they could to make it feel like a 4

As for the skiing the entire group were treated to a wide range of skiing opportunities - from nursery slopes to black mogul runs in bright sunshine and near-zero visibility snow-storms The boys were divided up in relation to their skiing ability for the daily lessons and even Mr Bullen popped into the beginnersrsquo classes to lsquosee how they were doingrsquo Later in the week following some heavy snow there were chances for even the lesser experienced skiers to try lsquooff-pistersquo skiing

The eveningsrsquo entertainment provided much hilarity for all with the year 1011rsquos dominating the bum-boarding the year 8rsquos the snow-sculpting and the staff decimating all on the karaoke Special mentions have to go to Blaise Fenn for his bone-shattering display on the ice-rink and to Josh King for his tear-inducing renditions on the karaoke machine

With all of this there were even a few chances to get the rugby ball out with the Skinnersrsquo boys headed by Joel lsquoWellingtonrsquo Day emerging victors in Serre Chevaliers first Anglo-French lsquosnow-rugbyrsquo game

Every boy had a great time and both the reps and hotel staff commented on how well behaved and well mannered the boys were They were an asset to the school and each and every one of them should be congratulated for the way in which they conducted themselves There was even a rumour going around the reps from the other hotels that this group was the best they had ever had 29 excited boys and 3 staff departed on Saturday 13th February 29 tired but very happy boys and 3 very tired staff (one with his wrist in a plaster-cast) returned on Saturday 20th February

Skinnersrsquo under 14rsquos claim Kent Sevens title

The Under 14s Sevens team have added the Kent Sevens Title to their 15 a side title they won in November

In an extremely tough tournament the boysrsquo hard work determination and team spirit saw them overcome St Olaves in a highly tense final Having recorded two wins and a lose in the group stages they drew Dartford Grammar in the semi finals Dartford had won every group game with ease and looked favourites to progress to the final However a performance that will be remembered by all who watched saw Skinners reach the final A defensive sevens master class was given both in defence and attack The boys marched Dartford back from the halfway line to their own 5 metre line stole the ball and took the lead Another fine passage of attack saw us lead 14 - 0 at half time Dartford came back strongly scoring two quick tries to level the scores However our attack stood firm and with two waves of attack the match was finished 26-14

In the final we met St Olaves who had beaten us easily in the group stage A tightly contested final saw the side exchange tries throughout the match until St Olaves scored with 1 minute to go We were down 15 -

21 We took possession on the restart and a knock on by St Olaves gave us one final chance in the last play of the game A shaky scrum saw Westy wrapped up in a tackle but he somehow got a pass off to Edwards who found McCarthy Dan stepped outside his defender fended him off with a strong right hand and carried the ball the length of the pitch to score under the posts20 -21 with an Edwards conversion to come Will took a few seconds and calmly slotted the ball over the posts 22-21 to Skinners - a superb final from both sides

Outstanding performances by the whole squad superbly led by Man of the Tournament Dan McCarthy who continues to improve into a fine rugby player

SPORTS NEWS - Rugby

Skinnersrsquo in Rugby Sevens HeavenThe Skinnerslsquo School U13rsquos and U14rsquos Sevens squads can now boast the prestigious title of being both Kent and Sussex Sevens Champions On Tuesday 17th March the talented U14 squad lifted the Kent U14 Sevens trophy at Rochester Maths School This matched the efforts of the U13 squad the previous week who traveled to Christrsquos Hospital School in Horsham and won the Sussex Sevens This now leaves both sides with a wealth of titles under their belts The U14rsquos have won 5 of their last 6 tournaments to date and the 13rsquos comfortably won the Fitzwater Sevens at Skinnersrsquo on Monday The under 13rsquos travel with high hopes to Roehampton on Monday 22nd March to take part in the National Sevens

Head of Rugby Nick Oldham commented lsquoSkinnersrsquo have some outstanding Rugby players throughout the age groups but have a rich vein of talent lower down the school at both A B and C team levels These teams are the best I have seen to date and I expect great things from them in the years to comersquo

Headmaster Simon Everson said ldquoThis year we had a wonderful run in the U18 Daily Mail cup with the 1st XV ndash it is very pleasing to see yet more success in the sevens competitions Both the U13 team and the 1st team have a real chance at the Nationalsrdquo

Hockey

U15 Hockey v BethanyThe A team played a closely fought fixture against Bethany School on Tuesday 9th March In spite of conceding a goal in the first 15 minutes the team fought back to win the match 2-1 Goals from Jeremy Tudor-Pole and George Montgomery provided the final touch from hard work and effort most notably by Andrew Reynolds Phil Rees and Will Lay However all 16 members of the squad can be proud of their contribution

U15 Hockey

David Firminger TrophyThe prestigious all day tournament held in Canterbury saw our boys take on the finest sides that Kent has to offer Competition was tough Spirited defense against Norton Knatchbull St Edmunds Duke of Yorks and Langley Park was encouraging to see however the going proved tough The afternoon saw us play a competitive Chatham House side who had also faced a number of top level teams A 1-1 draw proved to be a fair result for both sides allowing Skinnersrsquo to leave the tournament with confidence Valdemar Mollerfinished off excellent approach play from KierenBest

Throughout the day it was clear to see that all 16 boys had improved jelling together on a number of occasions playing good hockey and supporting each other well With hard work and commitment 1st XI hockey is not out of the question for a number of these boys

Player of the tournament was Andrew Boughton -consistent hardworking and strong distribution from the left back position

ENERGY

ISSUES

High Weald lsquoBig Energy Dayrsquo

Organised by the Kent High Weald project and funded by TWBC this is the second year that this major project has run

It sets out to educate local primary school pupils about how energy has been used in the Weald of Kent from the time when Man first arrived here right up to the latest projects to install wind turbines or solar panels Our STEM boys were joined this year by girls from Weald of Kent Grammar and together the team taught literally hundreds of pupils over the day about the sustainable delights of pedal-power solar water heaters and model solar cars

The weather could have been warmer and sunnier but despite this great fun was had by all and more importantly local pupils were made more aware of sustainable technology

Many thanks to all the Skinnersrsquo boys and Weald Of Kent girls who volunteered to help out and a particularly big thank you to Mr Mead who ran the pedal generator show and Jerome our new physics technician who looked after the solar-thermal-panel demonstrations Well done guys

What is Sustainability

Sustainability is just one word and yet there exists over 300 definitions

The best-known definition of sustainability or sustainable development is the definition by the World Commission on Environment and Development who suggest that sustainability is defined as lsquoforms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needsrsquo

Having proudly been elected to join the staff governing body for Skinnersrsquo I have been asked to contribute to the issue of ldquosustainabilityrdquo and am very happy to do so I would like to take this opportunity to ask if any of the boys have any ideas or thoughts about how we as a school can undertake further initiatives and make further savings in the area of sustainability It doesnrsquot matter if

you arenrsquot a member of the sustainability group that meets weekly and every two months at different schools because everybody can get on board and contribute by making suggestions and registering their ideas to improve our sustainability

We all need to be making more conscious decisions however small to collectively make a big difference to the environment I believe that paper is something we all take for granted if you think what a precious commodity it is we should be using it as sparingly as possible Itrsquos simple lsquoSave paper save treesrsquo save money There are of course many other ways of making a difference both at school and at home for example re-using carrier bags turning the lightsTVcomputers off when not in use recycling (everything that can possibly be recycled) insulation saving water etchellip you may think that making such small changes do not make a difference but donrsquot forget that the more people that make small changes adds up and the overall change will be monumental not to mention the savings on utility bills

I wonder how much energy was saved worldwide during lsquoEarth Hourrsquo 27th March 2010 Please let me know if you can calculate it Just a rough estimate will doSee lsquoEarth Hourrsquo for pictures and information on the web

I know Mark Moody and the boys have been working very hard and have already made considerable progress in this area I am relatively new to this so I am expecting a steep learning curve but am excited to be involved and will do everything to help support and promote this worthwhile cause

I look forward to hearing from you - there will be an lsquoEco Suggestions boxrsquo on my desk Let me know if you would like to become more involved

The pond is nearly complete thanks to a recent work day involving 35 pupils from Oakley Judd TGS and ourselves Ian Johnson from the Kent High Weald Partnership provided all the tools and expert direction and much was accomplished during the day

One team constructed dipping platforms ( a kit made from recycled plastic) another made benches and tables whilst others monitored the water quality and checked for signs of life (One of the features of this pond is that we will not be stocking it with anything in advance ndash we just want to watch how natural lsquosuccessionrsquo takes place over the next few years)

There is one more work day to come on Wednesday 28th April when we are making benches and putting the finishing touches to the dipping platforms so if any boy (or parent) is free then and would like to help out please see Mr Moody in the Science Office

A date for your diary There will be a lsquoGrand Openingrsquo at Oakley School on Friday 16th July celebrating learning outside the classroom There will displays BBQ music and access to all the projects we have been working on at Oakley over the past 5 years such as the Sensory Garden the Wildlife Trail the Organic Garden and of course the pond itself The next Newsletter will have more details

ENERGY

ENERGY

Page 5: Skinners March newsletter 2010

Tom James

Special thanks to Mr Hubbard for organising the trip and Mr James and Mr Bullen It was a resounding success

ENERGY

One final thought When you throw something away where is away Where does it actually go Think about ithelliphellip
