Purdue University Student Chapter Association for Women in Communications February 2011 Dear AWC members, It’s been a pleasure getting to know each of you through meetings, events and one-on-one meetings. I’m happy we have a great group of enthusiastic girls! There is one specific thing I’ve picked up on though since we first began the school year in August. AWC is dedicated to professional development, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends! It’s awesome to see that our members are connecting inside and outside of meetings/events. It’s important to remember though, when we invite communications professionals to our meetings, or when we’re invited to their offices and events, we must realize the difference between AWC friendships and professional relationships. In today’s competitive market one of the best ways to get an interview is with an inside connection, which is one of the main reasons the AWC Exec Board gives you access to professionals. Treating them with respect and courtesy is key. Dear AWC members,

It’s been a pleasure getting to know each of you through meetings, events and one-on-one meetings.

Many of our speakers have to travel long distances after our meetings, so it’s important to keep questions after 7:30 p.m. to a minimum

AWC Members’ Spotlight

• Kara Cook will be competing at the NCAA qualifying meet this weekend for diving. She has had an amazing season so far. At the Big Ten Championships she placed second on the ten-meter platform, barely missing first by 1.7 points. She also broke a 6-year-old school record with 348 points. If she places in the top 3 at the qualifying meet Kara will be headed to the NCAA Championships in Austin, TX over spring break.

• Hilary Blyly is freshman and currently an undecided major, but a wonderful addition to AWC this semester. Her intrsests include spending time with family, volunteering, sports and movies. One day she wants to be able to help people and make an impact on their lives.

Recap of Burson-Marsteller and WLS Radio Station Company Valerie Petrey

AWC President 15 AWC members attended our annual company visit this past February. AWC started the day at Burson-Marsteller, a worldwide public relations agency, in Chicago. While there, members got tips on how to successfully complete their highly competitive summer internship application. AWC also was given an exclusive tour of the creative and trendy office with three other colleges from the Midwest. Furthermore, professionals from digital communications, media relations and creative departments spoke to all attendees about essential skills needed to succeed in this business. The top thing said was adaptability. PR is fast paced and ever-changing, so it’s essential to stay on top of industry trends.

After enjoying a tasty lunch at the original Potbelly’s in downtown Chicago, AWC went to visit WLS Radio Station, which is housed in the #1 rated ABC T.V. studios. WLS has both AM and FM departments, with the FM focusing on oldies and rock music, and the AM, strictly news, and local and national politics. WLS has regular celebrities and political figures visiting their office every day! We received full-length tour and met with on-air talent, while learning more about their different summer internships, including design, promotions, programming, community relations and more!

Race for the Cure

This year, the AWC exec board has decided to participate in a philanthropic event outside of Purdue. We will be walking in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Indianapolis. The race is taking place the morning of Saturday April 16. The Race features a 5k run/walk in downtown Indianapolis. The money raised from this event goes to fund breast cancer research and treatment in Central Indiana. As an executive board, we feel that this is an awesome event for women’s empowerment As an all women’s club, this is something that we strive for. The registration deadline is April 7th at noon. You can register for our team by going to komenindy.org and clicking join a team. We have formed a team called “Purdue AWC” and are inviting any AWC members, alumni, or women who want to support this cause to join our team. Keep in mind this date is the same as Purdue’s Grand Prix. If you have any questions you may contact our team captain and executive board member Julie Smith at [email protected].

Letter from the President continued…

I suggest sending a brief email thanking them for coming, and asking if they have a minute to answer any additional questions via email. You could also add them on LinkedIn and follow them on Twitter to keep building the relationship. Another key networking rule is to research people and the company beforehand, if you know you’ll be meeting them. Five minutes of research about a speaker or a company we’re going to visit, will allow you the chance to think of questions beforehand, and also not be taken off guard when you start learning more about the company.

And finally, when we attend fun events, philanthropies or company visits, remember we’re not only representing ourselves, but AWC and Purdue. First impressions are crucial to individual and AWC success. It’s important to remain professional and adaptable when we travel off of Purdue’s campus!

4 Steps for Succeeding in Marketing your Cause Katelyn Wargel AWC Member On February 15th, Jenny Anchondo, morning anchor for Fox-59 News in Indianapolis, shared her journey as a news anchor as well as valuable information on how to be a professional advocate. Jenny has gained communication expertise while participating in internships and working for three news stations. In addition to news anchoring, Jenny uses her newsroom resources, as well as Facebook and Twitter for small freelance advocating. For anyone searching for strong promotional skills, Jenny provided the following advice to successfully market your cause. 1. Use technology. Jenny emphasized the benefits provided by Facebook and Twitter. They allow users to reach a wide audience in very little time. 2. Look to role models. Jenny suggested following well-known Public Relations or advertising feeds on Facebook and Twitter to observe beneficial strategies. Two of her favorite sites are Scotty’s Brew House’s Facebook and ChefCindi on Twitter. 3. Keep it brief. A little information will go a long way. Instead of overloading your readers, make a short and precise announcement. Include a link or refer readers to a place where they can retrieve more information. 4. Show your personality. Although promotion messages need to be professional, Jenny advises adding small amounts of personal information. A brief statement that adds personal experiences or beliefs will attract a wider audience. However, remember not to appear biased or put too much “fluff” in your announcement. Overall, Jenny said to grab the reader’s attention fast, entertain them, and offer them resources for more information.
