okInspired by the overlapping nature of the armadillo shell, I decided to explore the concept further by looking at the

different ways objects can overlap, while also grappling with different shapes used to overlap with.

I am also intrigued by the idea of designing my lantern to be situated on the body like 'armour', to shield the body, drawing from the purpose that animal shells have in the natural system.

Placement on body: neck/ collar, upper arm, shoulder

Design 1 is based around the idea of armour. It acts as three main layers, sitting on the shoulder blade. Its asymmetrical design helps promote a strong sense of interest and power.

Design 2 is inspired by the curved segments of the armadillo Following the theme of protective armour, the lantern is design to sit at the collar and over the shoulder blade. The concept of the design is to have the cylindrical shapes porous to let the LED light through.

Preliminary ideas and sketches

I was inspired by the segment feature of butterfly wings.

My designs are mainly based on grappling with the number of segments I should use and also how placing the lantern on different parts of the body would enhance different elements I want to highlight.

I found the placement on the head to be the boldest and most eye-catching design, much like the attention-grabbing butterfly wing itself.

Front Left

This design focuses on the segment feature of butterfly wings. Playing around with even or odd number of segments, I found an odd number would be more aesthetically appealing as it created an asymmetrical effect. The segments would further be separated into smaller sections with slits running through them. The LED would be concealed at the peak.

Precedence: United Arab Emirate's Pavilion- The Golden Sand Dunes

Many architects have drawn inspiration from the formation of sand dunes in their designs.

The UAE Pavilion was constructed for the Shanghai 2010 expo, flawlessly combining nature and art through its golden-sheen metal exterior which changes colours when light is reflected.

Consisting of panelling and open slits on the roof, it depicts the mounds and markings of sand dunes.

I chose to take a similar approach to my lantern design.

An image I found of the Sutherland Shire sand dunes imprinted with footprints along the surface inspired my design.

I tried to incorporate the peaks and markings into the sand dune as well as 'holes' which depict the footsteps.

The curve in my design reflects the wind path which forms the sand dune.

Placement on the body: upper arm, lower arm, across torso
