Why are Christians asked to evangelize?
Before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He instructed His
disciples, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the
gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
The Gospel, or “good news,” to which Jesus referred is
His Resurrection and victory over death. God became
man and died for our sins, then rose from the dead.
Thanks to Jesus, we have hope for a new life on earth
and eternal life in Heaven if we follow Him. “There is
no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any oth-
er name under heaven given to the human race by
which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Think of it another way: If you discovered a way to
eliminate hunger in the world or found a medicine to
cure all diseases, you would want to share what you
know with everyone who will listen. Jesus’ death and
Resurrection offers something more amazing: eternal
life. Once we have heard and believe the Good News,
we can’t keep it to ourselves. We must tell everyone
about it.

Letter from Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pope Francis once remarked that the Church is “a mother who has at heart the good of her children.” This motherly love of the Church takes
many forms, but it shines forth in a special way through the works of mercy which are the hallmark of Catholic Charities.
Next weekend, May 12 & 13, we will have an opportunity to share in the motherly love of the Church by supporting the traditional Mothers’
Day collection for Catholic Charities. The money received in this collection will be used to help those who are in need right here in our own
diocese. Through our food pantry, job training and housing assistance for refugees, mentoring programs for at-risk teens, mental health
counseling, support for those experiencing an unexpected pregnancy, assistance for those who wish to build their family through adoption,
and help for older men and women in finding enriching volunteer work or employment, Catholic Charities strives to serve the well-being of
our brothers and sisters in need. In honor of Mary, Mother of the Church, who always has at heart the good of her children, I ask you to be as
generous as you can with this collection.
Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Keven C.. Rhoades—Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend
