It wasn’t the easiest of journeys.  The roadfrom Nazareth to Bethlehem was a trek.Mountainous terrain was par for the course.Monstrous boulders towered in the distance,aloof, yet majestic in their sweep and breath,accompanying the traveler all the way fromGalilee to Judea.  Mt. Tabor, Gilboa andGerizim, were mountain ranges that the earthhad once coughed up by the will of One whospoke, and the void had obeyed. Dotting the horizon, however, a tired groupcomprising man, woman and beast made theirway anonymously into the hustle and bustleof census–time Bethlehem.  Weary beastcarried a tired woman; tired woman carriedan almost ready-to-be-born Babe and anxiousman, looked with darting eyes for “neon” signsthat would inform him of vacant rooms—butto no avail. Finally, they dismounted in front of thisroadside inn, whose only available place was astable.  Tiredly, Mary must have lookedaround at four-legged mid-wives who knewnothing of helping a two-legged creature wrapup a gestation period.  And into that obscure,cattle shed God birthed His plan of Salvation,placing His greatest gift to humanity in thecare of simple, ordinary, your every-day-next-door-neighbour-type, Joseph and Mary. Wow!  What a risk! That’s a God-kinda risk,isn’t it?  And He’s been doing that o’er thecenturies.  Pulling out men and women forspecific tasks; placing the responsibility of Hismessage of Salvation upon their shouldersand believing that they will do the job.  Andsome have failed, and some have succeeded.Some have made failure a steppingstone to

success, while still others have given up,falsely thinking that the task was too heavy toaccomplish.  Yet He persists.  Willing Hispeople on to share the importance andsignificance of a Baby born to be King. This Advent season, He continues to look forMessengers.  Gabriel did his job.  Mary andJoseph did theirs.  The Apostles, the EarlyChurch Fathers, the Martyrs of Christendomhave all done theirs.  And today He looks atHis church.  At us, wondering if we will pick upthe unfinished task of letting people knowthat the search for Him is over, that HE hasfound us.   That’s our challenge this season.  Amidstfrenetic Christmas activity; in the midst oftree decorations; in the busyness of choirpractices and drama rehearsals, will we findtime to introduce our friends to the Onewhose birthday we are celebrating? The ball is in our court, Beloved!-Pastor
