• Why build Simula?– Norway build a new
airport and hope to re-use the old airport in Fornebu
– Various proposals to usethe airport
• Build High-Tech Park withNational Funded ResearchLaboratory
• Research Council (2000)– Selection of activities
• Certain expectations– High quality research– Education (PhD)– Industrial relations

• Resilient Network (RN) Project
14
Resilient Networks 2006-2010• Five year funding from the Ministry of Transport and Communication,
Norway.
• Total funding of 27 MNOK
• WP1 ”IP-routing”– Fast reroute mechanisms– Post-Failure Traffic Load Balancing– Ad Hoc Network Resilience– Two INFOCOM papers (INFOCOM2006, INFOCOM2007)
• WP2 “Wireless IP-networks”– This activity started in August 2006 (lead by Dr. Yan Zhang (Josh) )
15
Resilient Wireless Network
• The purpose is to design architecture, protocols and algorithms to provide resilient services continuously and effectively for wireless networks. We are expecting to incorporate resilience as an inherent characteristic in wireless networks.
16
Understanding “Resilience” (I)
• Post-failure stage– Handle the emergence situation
– Spectrum handoff with primary system appearance
– If Node 3 is failed, Node 1 is isolated. Mechanism to make Node 1 communicate with other nodes.
Node 1Node 2
Node 3
Node 4
Network
17
Understanding “Resilience” (II)
• Before-failure: avoiding failure enhances the resilience – Energy management
– Mobility management
– Resource management
– Security management
– Spectrum management
– QoS
18
Wireless Systems/Networks
– Resilient Cognitive Mesh Networks• Resilient wireless mesh networks (WMN)• Resilient WiMAX Mesh Networks
– Resilient wireless sensor networks (WSN)
– And more (depending on manpower availability and progress)
19
