PREFACE OF COMMENDATION

I would like to commend this book of Psalms that Patricia Smith has been inspired to compose. As an Australian composer and of the Diocese of Broken Bay I am happy to support her in the promotion of this music.

The Psalms of the Old Testament draw us closer to our Living God. Singing raises our minds and hearts to the heavenly realm. With our feet planted firmly on earth our spirits take us to the heavenward. The various types of palms: praise, lament and thanksgiving, to name some, enable us to meditate deeper on God’s word.

May the musical settings composed by Patricia aid us in singing the praises of God!

Foreword

Singing the Psalms

The responsorial psalm follows the first reading in a Eucharistic celebration. It reflects on some aspect of the reading and usually draws a connection between the first reading and the Gospel. It should be sung wherever possible, for a number of reasons.

The psalms are the songs of the people of God. They were written as songs, sung and chanted poetry. Music adds a dimension of beauty and expressiveness to the poetry of the psalms. To sing is to pray with body, mind and heart. When the assembly sings the responsorial psalm, they are unified in their praise and their response to the Word of God in the first reading. Singing the psalms connects us to generations of worshippers over hundreds and thousands of years who have sung the same words of praise and lament in times of joy and despair and thanksgiving. When we pray the psalms, we voice the prayer of the whole people of God in all times and in all places.

Simple Psalms

These psalm settings were written in answer to the pressing need for liturgical music for children and young people which is powerful, accessible, and simple without being trivial.1

By reason of their baptism, children and young people have the right and duty to participate in the liturgy to the full extent of their capacity.2 For young people in a broader parish or school context, music and texts which place the depth and beauty of the psalms and the role of the psalmist within their reach make a gradual introduction to singing the responsorial psalm possible even for young children.

Introducing children to singing the psalms and teaching them to carry out the role of psalmist as an active ministry needs to be done with careful consideration for the age and abilities of the children.3 Music which is simple and attractive, set within a suitable range, and expressive of the intent of the text, enables children to sing well and with enjoyment, so that they come to understand the importance of singing the responsorial psalm to open the Word and to be better able to fully express the beauty and meaning of the psalm itself in music.4

In Masses and celebrations where most of the participants are children, such as school Masses and liturgies, psalm settings should be chosen that can be sung by children in a way that reflects the dignity of the psalm and that makes the content of the psalm accessible to children's understanding, so that it can more fully perform its liturgical role.5 For those

1 'The principles of active and conscious participation are in a sense even more significant for Masses celebrated with children. Every effort should therefore be made to increase this participation and make it more intense.' Directory for Masses with Children 22

2 Musicam Sacram 15 Their 'active participation, which is shown in singing, is to be carefully promoted... through suitable instruction and practices...' so that they and the whole assembly '...should be gradually led to a fuller—indeed, to a complete—participation in those parts of the singing which pertain to them.' MS 16

3 'The formation of the whole people in singing, should be seriously and patiently undertaken together with liturgical instruction, according to the age, status and way of life of the faithful and the degree of their religious culture; this should be done even from the first years of education in elementary schools.' MS 18

4 'Verses of psalms, carefully selected in accord with the understanding of children, or a song in the form of psalmody or the Alleluia with a simple verse should be sung between the readings. The children should always have a part in this singing...' MS 46

5 'The song after the lessons, be it in the form of gradual or responsorial psalm, has a special importance among the songs of the Proper. By its very nature, it forms part of the Liturgy of the Word. It should be

children who have the privilege of ministering as psalmists, it is vitally important that they have a real understanding of the words they are proclaiming. Providing carefully and sensitively adapted settings helps make not only the text but the function and the form of the responsorial psalm more transparent and easier for children to understand. When young psalmists sing, they are present as leaders for their peers and for younger children who listen attentively and associate themselves more closely with the words of the psalm.

The role of music in encouraging authentic participation is not limited to uniting hearts and minds in hymns and responses. Well-written music also has the power to speak the underlying mood of the psalms, and to make the message of the text clearer.6 Adapting psalm texts for children's understanding can allow the responsorial psalm to function more effectively to help explain the readings and bring them closer to children's hearts.

Singing the Responsorial Psalm

Usually the responsorial psalm is sung by a cantor or psalmist who sings the verses while the congregation responds by singing the response between each verse. It may also be sung in its entirety by the whole assembly, with the response sung at the beginning and the end or between the verses. Alternatively, a small group or choir may sing the verses and lead the congregation in singing the response. With children, each verse may be assigned to a different child, or to two children singing together.

The responsorial psalm should be sung from the ambo, or from another suitable place such as the music area in a church, especially if the verses are being sung by a choir. It should be sung at a speed which enables the cantor to communicate the words clearly and unhurriedly, with due regard for the character of the psalm. The books containing the psalms should be treated with the same respect and care as the Lectionary and the Book of Gospels.

Singing the psalms need not be restricted to the responsorial psalm after the first reading. Historically, psalms have been used as liturgical songs to accompany processions, to pronounce blessings, to express an individual's prayer of grief and pleading, to unite a community in thanksgiving.

This Book

This collection brings together settings for all the responsorial psalms in the three-year liturgical cycle. It includes feasts and solemnities such as All Saints, the feast of the Assumption, and the feast of St Mary of the Cross. It also includes responsorial psalms for special feasts and liturgies such as Confirmation and 1st Eucharist. A topical index is provided for celebrations such as Opening School Masses, Mother's Day and Father's Day liturgies, Graduations, and Commissionings.

The calendar of the liturgical year at the front of the book shows which psalm should be used for each Sunday or celebration, and which refrain and verses should be sung. For celebrations when no psalm is specified, such as graduations, commissioning new buildings and so on, a Topical/ Ritual index is provided at the back of the book. This index also covers celebrations

performed with all seated and listening to it—and, what is more, participating in it as far as possible.' MS 33

6 'All the elements that will help explain the readings should be given great consideration so that the children may make the biblical readings their own and may come more and more to appreciate better the value of God's word.' MS 47

Page 7: Simple Psalms Year A ADAPTED keyboard book foreword etc Psalms Sample/Simple Psalms Year A Adapted...Historically, psalms have been used as liturgical songs to accompany processions,

of sacraments such as Confirmation and Reconciliation, and gives suggestions for liturgies with a topical focus such as the environment or vocations.

The Church provides a small number of Seasonal Psalms for each of the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter, and for Ordinary Time. These seasonal psalms may be sung at any liturgy throughout the season, including Sunday Masses, replacing the psalm set down for the day. Seasonal psalms are listed here in the calendar at the beginning of each season.

“Is it not worth while making a vigorous effort to-day for the sake of establishing a good tradition? Especially should this be the case with children's hymns ...Incalculable good or harm may be done by the music which they sing in their most impressionable years.” 7
