RETAIL

Sime Darby Motors’ first assembly plant was the Associated Motors Industries (AMI) plant in Selangor, Malaysia in 1982, assembling BMW and Land Rover vehicles.

In 2004, Sime Darby Motors acquired the Inokom assembly plant in Kedah, Malaysia, assembling various Hyundai passenger and commercial vehicles. In 2008, assembly operations for BMW and Land Rover were relocated from AMI to Inokom plant. The MINI and Mazda brands were added in 2011.

Assembly materials are sourced from respective principals overseas as well as locally, catering for both the domestic and export markets. Inokom’s current capacity is between 30,000 - 40,000 units per annum. Utilising 51% of a 200-acre site, the plant has the potential to expand its production facility and is poised to meet increasing demand from the Asia Pacific region.

Sime Darby Motors serves as a bridge between its principals and customers through its extensive networks in the markets it operates in.

Its first distribution business began more than 30 years ago through the distribution of Ford vehicles. It now imports and distributes, among others, BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, Ford, Land Rover, Hyundai, Porsche, Suzuki and Mitsubishi passenger vehicles in the Asia Pacific region.

ASSEMBLY

Sime Darby Motors’ retail operations offer a wide range of vehicles from broad appeal market brands to luxury cars, as well as commercial vehicles. Some of the brands represented by Sime Darby Motors include BMW, MINI, Roll-Royce, Porsche, Hyundai, Ford and Land Rover.

Sime Darby Motors is focused on selling quality products supported by excellent after sales services.

Its retail operations feature some of the best and latest state of the art facilities in the region. Showrooms and service centres throughout the 10 countries are designed to offer customers comfort and experience second to none.

Sime Darby Motors’ foray into the Australasia market began in 1998 with the acquisition of Continental Car Services Ltd, a multi-franchise dealership based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Recent collaborations were formed with Porsche in Australia, Kia in Taiwan, BMW and MINI in Vietnam and Australia, Jaguar in Malaysia, Ferrari in Australia

In the commercial vehicle sector, Sime Darby Motors imports and distributes, the Hino, UD Nissan, Mitsubishi Fuso and Mack brands, among others.

In October 2006, Dato’ Lawrence Lee was appointed the Chief Operating Officer for Sime Darby Motor Division Sdn Bhd It was only a few months later that he was promoted to be the Divisional Director of Kumpulan Sime Darby Berhad’s Motors Division in March 2007. In January 2008, he assumed his present position as the Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors. Dato’ Lawrence leads and oversees Sime Darby Motors, a major player in the Asia Pacific automotive industry with presence in 10 countries.He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Simon Rock was the Managing Director of Performance Motors Ltd., in Singapore, the BMW distributor and dealer for eight years from August 2002 to March 2010, before he was promoted to Managing Director for Sime Darby Motors in Malaysia and Singapore. His role further expanded in February 2012 to include the Australian and New Zealand operations when he assumed his present position as Chief Operating Officer of Sime Darby Motors.

Dennis Ho was appointed the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd in June 2007, and was tasked to build the Hyundai brand. He was later appointed the Managing Director of the same company in December 2007. Dennis was later promoted to Managing Director for Sime Darby Motors’ Malaysian operations in February 2012, and was given the additional responsibility of introducing the Kia brand to the Taiwan market. He assumed his present position in November 2013 to oversee the Malaysian, Thailand and Taiwanese markets for Sime Darby Motors.

Gary Wong has been the Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors China, Hong Kong and Macau markets since July 2017. Gary started his career with Sime Darby China Limited, Hong Kong in June 2000, as an Operation Manager (Automotive Division) and was promoted as the Regional General Manager in 2001 for the group’s multi-franchise automobile retail business in southern China. Gary’s last position before he left the Sime Darby Group in 2005 was as the Director and General Manager of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Hong Kong & China. Prior to re-joining Sime Darby this year, Gary has worked with several leading automotive players in the region and served in various management and advisory roles.

Nik Hanafi was appointed the Head of Group Corporate Assurance for Sime Darby Berhad in November 2007, before assuming his present position in Sime Darby Motors in June 2010. His current responsibilities in Sime Darby Motors include financial management and controls, accounting, risk management, IT, procurement, strategy and business development.He is a certified public accountant.

Patrick McKenna joined the Sime Darby group in March 2006 as Managing Director for the New Zealand operations. In April 2013, Patrick was promoted as Managing Director for Sime Darby Motors' New Zealand and Australian operations. He is currently responsible for operations across both countries, which include commercial vehicle distribution, sales and service companies, multiple premium brand retail car dealerships and passenger vehicle importation and distribution.

Zahidah Akmal Ghazali was appointed the Head of Human Resources, Sime Darby Motors in October 2015. She has more than 20 years’ experience in the full spectrum of human resource and industrial relations in strategic and operational roles including 10 years of experience holding regional positions. She has implemented structural re-organisation and change manage-ment in multinational companies. She is currently responsible for developing and implementing human resource management strategies.

Datuk Aishah Shaikh Ahmad is the Head of Corporate Affairs for Sime Darby Motors and Chief Executive Officer of Sime Darby Auto Imports Sdn Bhd. She joined Sime Darby in 1981 as a Fleet Sales Manager with Ford Malaysia Sdn Bhd. In January 2002, Datuk Aishah was promoted as Head of Corporate Affairs, for the Sime Darby Motors Group in Tractors Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and continued with her portfolio when Sime Darby Motors was restructured as a core division of the Sime Darby Auto Imports Sdn Bhd in January 2006. With more than 30 years of experience in the automotive industry, Datuk Aishah has served as the Chairman of the Automo-tive Federation Malaysia (AFM) since September 1998, and as the President of the Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) since January 2000.

1972 Sime Darby Motors acquired BMW Concessionaires (HK) Ltd, the sole importer and distributor of BMW cars and motorcycles in Hong Kong and Macau.

1979 Performance Motors Ltd (PML) gained dealership rights of BMW cars and motorcycles in Singapore.

1981Tractors Singapore Ltd was appointed sole distributor of Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles and parts in Singapore. It also became the franchise holder for Ford passenger cars and commercial vehicles in Singapore. Land Rover Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the sole franchise holder in Malaysia and Brunei was set up by Pernas Sime Darby Holdings and Land Rover Ltd of the UK.

1982Sime Darby Motors entered the hire and drive business through the setting up of Hertz franchise for Malaysia and Brunei.

1986Sime Darby Hong Kong Ltd acquired sole distributorship rights for the Suzuki motor vehicle franchise in Hong Kong and Macau.

1987Sime Darby Hong Kong Ltd acquired sole distributorship rights for the BMW motor vehicle franchise in Hong Kong and Macau.Auto Bavaria Sdn Bhd, a member of the Pernas Sime Darby Group was appointed authorised sole importer and distributor of BMW products in Malaysia.

1991The first Malaysian assembled BMW 730iL rolled out of the AMI assembly plant, making Auto Bavaria the first BMW importer to assemble the vehicle outside German.

1994Sime Darby Motors entered China with the acquisition of distribution rights for the BMW motor vehicle franchise in the Guangdong and Hainan provinces.

1997Regent Motors Ltd, distributor of Ford and Land Rover vehicles in Singapore, attained ISO 9002 certification.Universal Cars Ltd in Hong Kong was awarded ‘The Best Performance Distributor’ by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation for excellent sales of the Mitsubishi Galant.Performance Motors Ltd in Singapore won the BMW AG award for achieving the highest sales for BMW worldwide.

2016A new Porsche Parramatta Centre in Sydney, Australiawas officially launched in December.

2017Sime Darby Motors added the Fiat and Alfa Romeomarques with the acquisition of a dealership in Brisbane,Australia.

2014Sime Darby Motors acquired Brisbane BMW Groupin Australia.Sime Darby Motors entered into a JV with Sisma Auto SdnBhd and obtained sole distributorship and dealership ofJaguar and Land Rover vehicles in Malaysia.

2013Inokom commenced assembly of Mazda vehicles for export to Thailand.McLaren began operations in Shanghai and Malaysia.Sime Darby Motors was appointed as sole distributorand dealer of McLaren vehicles in Malaysia.

1998The after sales parts and service centres for Mitsubishi, Ford, Suzuki and Alfa Romeo were consolidated under a new company, Sime Darby Motor Services Ltd, to improve customer service.

The Auto Bavaria division of Tractors Malaysia moved into its new premises – a 12-vehicle display showroom with a 52-bay service and repair centre designed by BMW in Selangor, Malaysia.Sime Darby’s foray into the New Zealand automotive marketbegan with an 80% acquisition of Continental Car Services Ltd, a multi-franchise dealership based in Auckland.

1999The New Discovery was officially rolled out of the Selangor, Malaysia assembly plant, making it the first Land Rover vehicle ever to be assembled outside its home base in the UK.

2002Sime Darby Australia Ltd acquired the Corefleet business.

2003The Sime Darby Group officially announced the establishment

Sime Darby Hong Kong Ltd was renamed Sime Darby China Ltd and its regional headquarters relocated from Hong Kong to Beijing, China.

2004Sime Darby Motors foray into New Zealand began with an investment in the truck business, involving the distribution of Mack, Renault and Hino brands. The investment also added new brands to the group’s retail business including Nissan, Mitsubishi, Kia and Suzuki.

2005Sime Darby Auto Italia Sdn Bhd was awarded the exclusivefranchise rights of the Alfa Romeo marque in Malaysia by FIAT Auto SPA.Sime Darby Motors finalised the acquisition of Hyundai businesses in Malaysia from Berjaya Group, adding the Hyundai brand to its marques.

2006Shanghai Sime Darby Motor Commerce Company Ltd was incorporated in China as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sime Darby Motor Group (HK) Ltd. The company is primarily involved in the retail of automobiles by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd.

2009Sime Darby Hyundai Sdn Bhd acquired the remaining 60% equity interest in Oriental-Hyundai Sdn Bhd, making it a subsidiary Sime Darby Berhad.

2010Sime Darby Motors became the retailer of Lamborghini vehicles in China.Sime Darby Auto Performance Sdn Bhd commenced operations as the distributor and retailer of Porsche-branded motor vehicles,spare parts, and accessories including provision of related services in Malaysia. Sime Darby Motors added the Jaguar and Land Rover marques to its retail business in China.

2012Rolls-Royce’s Macau dealership commenced operationsSime Darby Motors Thailand expanded its retail operation for Ford.

2011The McLaren brand joined the list of luxury marques under Sime Darby Motors business in Hong Kong.
