Message from the East I hope that you all had a wonderful summer break, during our dark month of August and that you are fully renewed

and ready to take care of business in our lodge and in our fraternity in general. Here are just some of the highlights before we went dark:

913 Dist. Family Picnic Aug. Luau Meeting Covina Conferral Golf Fundraising

Please join us on Our Sept. 2, 2016 Stated Meeting at 6 pm, as we Dedicate our newly refurbished conference room to our Late Worthy Brother Worshipful Lester M. Davis. On Sept. 17, 2016, 6 p.m. (See Jr. Wardens Invitation Flayer) we will be having our 16th Lodge Anniversary Luau Dinner; Our Theme for the Evening: “Old Traditions, New Challenges” and you are all cordially invited. During this time, we will present a check to Jefferson Elementary School in support of their, “Raising a Reader”, program. Together with the Deputy Grand Master please join us for this special event at our lodge.

Our 2016 Masonic Hall Association (MHA) has published its, Short, Intermediate and Long Term Project Plans covering up to Year 2020. Among the targeted Short Term Improvement Plans are: refurbishing of conference room and 3rd floor Lounge (completed), acquisition of chair rack and organizing the dining hall chair storage (completed), installation of solar power generator on the roof top (on going), restoration and refurbishing of the library (on going). The Intermediate plans are: digitizing our archives from (1898 to 2000), refurbishing of Past Master portrait (1898 to present), re-carpeting of Lodge room Altar with black and white checkerboard and painting of the interior wall on both 2nd floor and 3rd floor. Also installation of air-conditioning system for the hall. The Long term Project Goals are: re-carpeting of the entire 3rd floor and 2nd floor. Refurbishing the Lodge seats, acquisitions of new dining hall chairs and refurbishing of storage area under the stage in the dining hall. Our MHA is also working closely with our tenant and with our Local North Park Community to minimize the noise that we generate as there was a complaint filed against us by a neighbor. A brotherly reminder to all that we should keep our noise to an acceptable level, especially when we are at the outside of the east and north side of the building.

During our August Stated Meeting, I informed you of a very worthy endeavor and the associated need as to why I recommend that we increase our dues $17.00/yr. ($1.40/month) more. I hope that by reiterating these following reasons: “ That your additional contribution of $1.40 per month will go a long way in ensuring the continuance of our Community and Fraternal Projects, such as Raising a Reader, Masons for Mitts, Public School Support and Aiding our distressed brothers through our Masonic Outreach Program. Keeping in mind since our last dues increase, four years ago, the cost of living has increase 4.6% steadily and inflation of the dollar is 2.33%. That the value or cost of membership in California Free Masonry in 1906 compared to the present is much lesser. That in some other Masonic Jurisdictions their Annual Membership Dues is over $1,000.00”; my hope is that you will consider voting YES on this planned motion during our Sept. 2nd, Stated Meeting. Finally I wish to leave you with this Quote from our Brother, Albert Pike “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” Fraternally yours, Bro. Mark Gene D.C. 2016 Worshipful Master

From the West: How good and how pleasant it is, my brothers to think that after a short break during the month of August, we are back again laboring as we welcome the month of September where we celebrate Labor Day. I am sure you are fully aware that during September is when California Masonic Lodges center their efforts in recognizing outstanding Mason of the Year (MOY) brothers. Our lodge is so blessed to be surrounded by so many dedicated brothers who year after year unselfishly give everything they have for the betterment of our lodge. Whether it’s running the kitchen or spearheading our lodge fund raising efforts in order to support our lodge’s objectives. Unfortunately we can only recognize one brother per year. Our Congratulations goes to our Senior Steward, Bro Alex Espiritu who garnered the honors of being the MOY for this year. In the coming days, we will be selecting a brother to bear the honor of HIRAM Awardee. If you have not submitted your nominee for the HIRAM award, please submit them to our Worshipful Master. The deadline is 2 Sep 2016. Finally, in case you have not noticed the Football Season is here once again as we welcome the San Diego CHARGERS 2016 campaign for the elusive Super Bowl run. But let’s not forget, the PADRES are still playing and we will have another chance to watch them as they closeout the 2016 season. Masons Night @ Petco Park will be held on the 22nd of September and will highlight the annual, “Masons for Mitts”, and program of the Grand Lodge in the San Diego area where the PADRES will host their arch rival SF Giants.

U.S. Constitution Observant Month

Masonic education for the month: The American people have been blessed with a Bill of Rights at least since 1791, when the ratification of the first ten Amendments to the Constitution was completed. There is reason to say "at least" since then, for when a great outcry went up that the Constitution framed in 1787 contained no Bill of Rights, the reply was made that the entire document was a charter of Rights and liberties. Both in the character of the original Constitution and in its specific details, that was true to a much greater extent than alarmed citizens realized. Yet as a charter of Freedom, it was woefully deficient. By oversight and underestimate, great gaps were left in the protective armor against governmental oppression and the tyranny of popular majorities. Responding to a nationwide demand, the First Congress of the United States undertook to supply what was missing. It seemed to have done so with the submission to the States, in 1789, of twelve Amendments, all of which were promptly ratified except two of trivial importance relating to the composition and pay of Congress. On the Level, Bro Lito Oxina Senior Warden 2016

From the South:

Our dark month is over and I hope that everyone enjoyed their Summer Vacation. The 913th district 2nd degree conferral in West Covina last July 30th is once again a success due to a good practice, preparation and the excellent performance of our brethren who labored that day. I want to express my sincere thanks to our Brothers: Worshipful Brother Mario Rante, Brother Alex Espiritu, Brother Charlie Ballestamon, Worshipful Brother Arnel Zapata and all our Sisters and Brothers who helped out in the Kitchen during our Covina conferral. Likewise, I also want extend my special thanks to Brothers: Vic De Guzman, Jun Asperas, Brother Rey Cruz, Brother Edwin Ebreo, Brother Hermie Zuniga, Worshipful Brother Celso Maranon, and all other Brothers and Sisters who assisted during our August Stated Meeting Dinner. My heartfelt gratitude to all. As we celebrate Labor Day, let us also not forget to give thanks and prays for the safety of our Men and Women in the military who are away from home protecting our freedom and democracy. By ending this message, let me just quote a phrase in saying that……“ Time, Patience and perseverance will accomplished all things.” By the Plumb Bro Art Coloma Junior Warden 2016

Beat the Heat Here are some signs of heat stroke: • Throbbing headache • Dizziness & light-headedness • Lack of sweating de-spite the heat • Red, hot, and dry skin • Muscle weakness or cramps • Nausea and vomiting • Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak • Rapid, shallow breathing • Behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation, or staggering • Seizures • Unconsciousness Summertime is still here! We’ve already experienced several heatwaves in California for this year and there may be more to come through this Fall. For your health and the health of your loved ones, it is essential to stay cool in the heat. Follow these tips to protect you and your loved ones from heat-related illness: Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages throughout the day. Water is great! Rest. Do not overexert. Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath. Seek an air-conditioned environment; if your home is not air conditioned, visit an air conditioned shopping mall, movie theater or public library to cool off. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing; if outdoors, wear a hat. Plan outdoor activities in early morning when it is cooler. On hotter days, visit or call our more vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbors at least twice a day, watching them for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Heat stroke is when the core temperature is 105 degrees or above. If you observe a person who may be suffering from heat stroke, instruct someone to call 911. While help is being contacted, initiate any of the following cooling strategies: Fan air over the body wetting the skin with a hose or sponge. Apply ice to the armpits, groin, neck and back. Immerse the person in a cool shower or tub or an ice bath. Brothers, if you would like to receive the Trestleboard Electronically and opt out of the paper version to help us save mailing costs, email Asst. Sec. at [email protected]. You will be put in a mail group to receive it earlier via e-mail. Join us on Facebook at the group Silver Gate Three Stars #296, Free and Accepted Masons!!!
