It is customary to hear the five stories at the end of the Satyanarayana Vratham. They teach us how Lord Satyanarayana is indeed very merciful by showing the value of sticking to the Truth. The five stories illustrate the value of five principles to be followed in life to be successful. They are like the panch sheel. For easy remembrance we can compare them to the five fingers of the hand. The length of the stories resembles the length of five fingers and the palm represents the Brahman or Eternal Truth. The first story is short like the thumb. The second story is longer like the index finger. The third and fourth stories are even longer like the middle and ring fingers and the fifth story is short like the little finger. The first story illustrates the value of devotion to Truth, called Sadbhakt i. Lord Satyanarayana is the lord of Truth. Brahman is Eternal Truth. The second story illustrates the value of good company, called Satsang . The woodcutter saw the Brahmin do the pooja and followed his advice. He became successful. The third story illustrates the result of not keeping one’s promise. This is satya graha or holding on to the truth. The fourth story illustrates the value of true austerity or Satya tapas . The fifth story illustrates Satya atma , that the atma is same in all beings and every one is equal in God’s eyes. Here are the stories.:
