November 2010 August 2014 Presidents Le er Hello to all my CIPA friends!

I know its clich to say the summer wentfast, but boy howdy, did it go fast. Mydaughter is star ng 3 rd grade on the 15 th .The 20 th Annual CIPA EVVY awards ban-quet is less than two weeks away.

    This year marks my 4th

year on the CIPAboard. Its been quite a journey, workingto help make CIPA the best publishinggroup in Colorado!

We changed things up a bit this yearweused to run the EVVYs from Octoberthrough March with the award banquetin May. We decided to see what wouldhappen if we ran the contest betweenMarch and May, with the banquet in Au-gust. All I can say is WOW! Our formerhighest ever category entries was 206

in 2006. This year we increased that by25%! We had 278 category entries! Thatmeans that the compe on has beens but all very, very good. The bookshave been excellent overall. Im especial-ly pleased to note that most of the bookshave publishing companies a ached tothem. This means that our indie authorsare ge ng smart! Instead of publishingunder their names, they create a publish-ing en ty and publish under that. It legi -mizes all the hard work that we all do asindie authors and publishers!

I encourage all the nalists to come tothe CIPA EVVY awards banquet this year.It promises to be a lot of funandtheres been a huge amount of diligentwork to make sure that contest has runsmoothly! Thats what publishing is real-ly all aboutdiligence! We need to makesure our books are the best possible andcan compete in the marketplace!

Charging Sales Tax for Your Book

Should you charge sales tax for your book?By Mary Walewski

My email always brings me ques ons that evolve into a re-search project and a blog post!

Do you know how to handle sales tax for when we sellbooks? Each community is di erent. Many require a business

license. Am I required to have a business license for each com-munity where I sell a book and pay them their tax, the statetheirs, etc.?

A google search of How much sales tax do I charge broughtup some great resources, the best being Etsys Everything YouNeed to Know About Sales Tax and The Simple But Sweet GuideTo Charging Sales Tax .

Not sure what your sales tax is in your town. Heres a handycalculator by zip code .

Bo om line: You need to know the sales tax regula ons in yourstate. I didnt know is not a valid excuse according to the taxcollectors. Some states just want you to charge sales tax forbooks sold to customers within your state. (This includes onlinesales.) Some states and ci es require a business license and/ora sales tax license. Most states allow you to collect sales tax atyour local rate, rather than your buyers local rate.

Once youve collected the sales tax, its your responsibility topay the tax. Naturally, each state does that in a di erent way, too. Check your states department of revenue website for themost up -to -date info.

For my friends here in Colorado, I googled How much sales taxdo I charge in Colorado and landed on the Dept of Revenuessales tax collec on page .
