The Shuaibah Expansion Project Company (SEPCO) was built as an extension to the Shuaibah IWPP project due to high water demand in the Makkah Mukarramah region. Saudi Arabian and Malaysian corporate investors, and quasi-government entities from Malaysia and Saudi Arabia sponsor the Project, including the Public Investment Fund (PFI).
SEPCO was established in 2007 to develop a reverse osmosis plant on a build, own, operate basis. The expansion has a capacity of 150,000m3/day of desalinated water, bringing the total capacity of the Shuaibah IWPP to 1,030,000 m3/day, the equivalent of more than 400 Olympic sized swimming pools per day.
