Imagine.New worlds, new life forms, new technology. Things that we yet do not have, but crave. Our imagination is the open space where possibilities wander. Visual effects, concept art, production design. They are all a part of modern film industry. The entertainment cannot go about without them these days. And the better they are made, the less noticable they are to the audience. That is why so very few are aware of the enormous amount of people behind TV shows, blockbusters and documentaries. In this issue, selected British concept artists, designers and VFX companies are shown through their fantastic art and design. The skill of creation comes alive in their imagery.

Feast your eyes.

As a teacher I remember being very deliberate about promoting ‘visual literacy’ to the students. The understanding that we live in a visually orientated world and that all visual media, whether that’s magazines, advertising, architecture, product design, fashion, gaming, cinema, graphics belong to a visual language and that we should have an awareness, a visual literacy, of how that language can be used to inform, express, influence, inspire, confront etc, essentially communicate to us.

Art is about you and what you think. It requires personal reflection. It’s about being a producer and not just a consumer. It’s about being visually literate, about creativity.

Art has a special place in education. We have a curriculum which is mostly geared towards standardized approaches, even standardized thinking. The government is usually very patronising and calls art a ‘soft’ subject. To be an artist takes study, dedication, knowledge, experience, skill, expertise, fierce perseverance, reflection, critical thinking, visual literacy and an understanding that success and learning comes through failing too…none of which you can be born with I might add. The study of art in school isn’t a career path to becoming an artist, it’s about developing a whole person, a producer, not just a consumer.

Good Day to Die HardSkyfall

Chris’s most recent projects include Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows”, the award-winning James Bond film “Skyfall”, and the Bruce Willis action epic “A Good Day To Die Hard” where he worked very closely with director John Moore developing the detailed production illustrations used to guide the shoot.

In 2012, Chris received an Emmy nomination for his work with Jellyfish Pictures for “Outstanding Special Visual Effects” on the series “Inside The Human Body”.

Chris Rosewarne’s concept art for Skyfall

Chris Rosewarne, is a British concept artist and illustrator working in the film and television industry. His fast cinematic renderings and industrial prop designs have brought him to projects internationally from L.A. to London and many studios across Europe.

Born in 1978 to artist parents, Chris grew up in London and studied art at St. Martins College before graduating with a B.A Hons in Modelmaking for design and media in Bournemouth.

In 2003 he was employed by Artem Visual Effects as a freelance modelmaker where he worked on the films “Reign Of Fire” and Terry Gilliam’s “The Brothers Grimm”. After four years as an industry prop-maker, Chris turned his attention to the art department and began work on the sci-fi cult game adaptation “Doom” where he applied his hands-on knowledge of machining, materials and workshop processes to the design of props and set dressing.

He has since worked on a wide range of productions, from making high-tech designs and atmospheric key-frames for George Lucas’s “Star Wars” TV series, to intricately detailed matte paintings for the BBC’s documentary series “Planet Dinosaur”.

The varied, complex and technical skill required are evident from builds such as mega death ray dishes inside a lake for James Bond’s “Goldeneye,” haunted submarines in “Below” to the dynamic sets and stages for sinking ships in “Titanic” making his love of this realm undeniable.

Mr. Lee resides in Los Angles, California.

Dyas earned a Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London and holds a BA from the Chelsea School of Art and Design. He began his career in Tokyo working as an industrial designer for Sony under the supervision of the company’s legendary founder, Akio Morita. During that time, an exhibition of Dyas’ personal works led to an invitation from Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) to join their team in California where he began his film career as the visual

effects Art Director on Twister. From there, Dyas developed his skills as a concept artist on a number of films, including Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, the Wachowski brothers’ The Matrix Reloaded, and Guillermo Del Toro’s Mimic. His first production design assignment was X2: X-Men United for Bryan Singer, followed closely by Terry Gilliam’s whimsical fantasy The Brothers Grimm.

Most recently, Dyas collaborated with Christopher Nolan on his ambitious sci-fi thriller Inception which earned him an Academy Award®™ nomination as well as a BAFTA Award for best Production Design. In 2010 Dyas became the first British designer to win a Goya Award for Best Production Design for his work on Alejandro Amenábar’s historical epic Agora which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival as a part of their official selection.

I am a concept designer and 3D modeller living in London, England. I focus primarily on 2D & 3D industrial designs for the entertainment and automotive industries, but additionally work on GUI (Graphical User Interface) design projects. I always endeavour to inject my work with a fresh creative edge, and pride myself on being able to deliver a full conceptual package - from initial 2D proposals through to final highly detailed, photo realistic 3D

visuals. As well as free-hand sketching, the software packages I primarily work with are Maxon Cinema 4D for 3D work and Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash for 2D and graphics.

As well as having articles written about my work, I now also write tutorials for magazines such as ‘3D Artist’, focussing on the design process and methods with which my work was created.D
