Short row Shawl, crochet Materials size P crochet hook Note on Mystery version: Yarn is held double throughout, one strand of the neutral, one strand of the scrap yarn. You could change colors at the end of every section, then repeat the color later. Or just work with the scrap ball until it runs out, then join the new color. Either way, the neutral yarn is used throughout. The shawl is worked sideways in half double crochet, with short rows. Each wedge starts by crocheting just the first 5 stitches and turning, then working 5 more each subsequent row until the entire row is worked. This forms wedge-shaped sections, with a finished piece very wide at the lower edge, narrow at the top. The last 5 stitches form a collar. Chain 35 stitches (*see note below for a longer shawl) Work one row in half double crochet, chain one to turn Materials for Mystery version Mystery bag of scrap yarn 8-10 ounces (approximately 3 or 4 3-ounce skeins) worsted weight yarn in neutral color Suggestion for neutral color: black, white, gray, tan, blue. Sample uses sage green For Solid Version: 15-18 ounces worsted weight yarn, held double

Chain 35 stitches (*see note below for a longer shawl) Work one row in half double crochet, chain one to turn

Start wedge: Half double crochet 5 stitches, turn, half double 5 back to beginning (chain 1 to turn or just turn, whichever works best for you) *Half double crochet to end of short row.

At the “cliff” from first short row, rather than forming the half double as usual, instead of yarning over the hook, pick up a strand of the edge of the short row, then insert hook in the stitch after the short row, drawing yarn through all 3 loops on hook. This prevents a gap and smooths the transition and counts as the first of the next 5 stitches.Half double in those next 4 stitches, turn, work back to beginning. * Repeat from * to *, working 5 more stitches in each row (5 stitches past the end of the preceding short row) until the entire 35 stitches have been worked, to neck edge. Chain 1, turn, work back to wide hem edge. (change color here, if you are changing at the end of each section)

Repeat short row wedges until you have 8 wedges total. If you have extra scrap yarn, or want a larger size, crochet 1-2 more wedges.

Fasten off, work tails in.

*If you would like a longer shawl (sample is about elbow length) add stitches in increments of 5.
