Welcome to the first edition of the Business Talk for 2014. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with friends and family.

There has never been a more critical time for the City to remain committed to ensuring the needs and aspirations of our business community are well met.

As you are aware, it has been proposed that the City of Belmont and the Shire of Kalamunda amalgamate. This proposal is not a final decision. The next vital stage in this process is an inquiry by the Local Government Advisory Board into all the proposals that have been put to it, which has now started.

Since the start of the discussion over Local Government Reform, our Council has made it clear that it does not support the amalgamation of the City of Belmont with any other local authority. In particular, there are key features which we believe make amalgamation with Kalamunda inappropriate.

It is vital that the community’s voice, as well as Council, is heard on this important matter. The time for everyone to have a say in this process to ensure that the ultimate outcome is right for the Belmont community is upon us. Get involved and join the conversation on Facebook at Back Belmont and, Twitter via

#BackBelmont and complete the survey form available at www.belmont.wa.gov.au If we all speak loudly enough, we can influence this process.

We look forward to providing you with information to support your voice being heard by the Local Government Advisory Board and the Minister for Local Government.

LODGE A SUBMISSION AND DEMAND A POLL!

Complete the Submission Form saying you oppose amalgamation. Make it clear that you want to see an official poll for Belmont by asking for a Poll on the Submission Form. Submissions close 4pm on Thursday, 13 March 2014. Proposal numbers are 8, 15 and 5/2013.

The Rotary Club of Ascot is seeking nominations for the inaugural ‘Rotary Pride of Workmanship Awards’ from employers in the wider Belmont business district. Employers are asked to nominate an employee who they believe has made an outstanding contribution to the success of their workplace.

President Julia Temby explains that the theme of the awards is ‘Building a Better Australia – Do it once Do it well.

“They are designed to cover all ages and levels of responsibility within the workplace and are intended to embrace all aspects of workplace responsibility such as ethics, safety, leadership, initiative and commitment to quality, to name a few.”

The awards ceremony will be held at a special function at Ascot Quays on Wednesday, 9 April 2014.

BELMONT DEMOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC STATISTICS

How many people live in Belmont? What is the City’s GDP?

The City’s online community and economic statistics are provided by programs Profile, Atlas and Economy and are based on Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 Census data and information from the National Economic Indicators (NIEIR).

A simple click on the Community Profile link allows you to navigate between the three tabs Profileid/Atlasid/Economyid to get the information you want.

Atlas represents the same information in map version.

Economy has the business related information such as GDP, how many full time jobs there are, main industries and where workers live both inside and outside of Belmont.

A nifty report tool allows you to generate your own report in pdf format and have it emailed to your business. You can also export maps, tables and graphs that can be inserted into reports and plans.
